for instant messaging: Everyone has their favorite client; mine is Beejive's JiveTalk for Windows Mobile, currently in beta. Sure, other clients let you chat away on AIM/iChat, MSN, Google Talk, and the like; so why do I prefer Jivetalk? 1. It's highly configurable. 2. It shows your contact's avatar (at least, in Google talk and maybe AIM); its interface is atractive and simple and makes good use of real estate.

Unlike the Blackberry version, the Windows Mobile JiveTalk doesn't let you tell it to alert you when a favorite friend comes online. But I'll bet that feature is coming.

About the only protocol it can't do is Skype.

I've sold my soul to Google, so when I bought my XV6800, the first app I wanted on it was gmail...native gmail so I can have access to my entire email history. To get it to work on a 6800, you must first install Java. I must have spent 10 hours researching and trying various Java clients before discovering the winner: GC Java Pack with gmail (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402980).

total commander is nice too. it replaces the file explorer and adds regedit and manages FTP's when downloading large objects I always get my phone hickuping on me when I try to use PIE. for me the other must haves are googlemaps, slide to unlock, TCPMP (the free version similar to core player) and the HTC home screen (love the bigger clock and the simple on screen access to programs weather and contacts)
