View Full Version : [APP][UPDATED 2009/01/20] New G-Sensor/Accelerometer Game: CAVER

ageye
21st July 2008, 08:28 PM
Hi,

I'm proud to announce a new game especially made for the Diamond...

Caver is based on a black&white game I played years ago on a Palm...
The difference: my game uses the g-sensor to navigate your ball through the cave...

101987 101988

Features:
- Online Highscore list!
- Different difficulty levels
- Build your own levels simply by creating png files! (a howto will follow - but I think it's pretty self-explanatory... just look in the gfx/Level 1 folder and build your own levels according to my example level... and don't forget: POST THEM HERE!! The levels don't have to be black and white... everything that's white is a valid zone for the ball)
- Highscore list
- Calibration of g-sensor

Todo list:
- Special zones where you get more points
- Obstacles you have to fire in order to pass
- Adding options to adjust the tilt sensor sensitivity for non-online highscore mode

Changelog:
http://www.ageye.de/index.php?s=caver/changelog

Donations so far:
http://www.ageye.de/index.php?s=donations
Thanks to all who have donated

If you like the game, support it by submitting bugs (just pm me/post them here), by building levels (post them here), by suggesting features or by donating (https//www.ageye.de/index.php?s=donations)... THANKS

I hope you like it!

It's nice, but..after game over I every time have to restart the game since it simply just won't go back to the splash screen?

OW ow I can see the well designed pieces of art coming when making levels as PNG is possible.

But as you are developing, you say the ball goes on the white. Its a pity for levelmakers to NEED white, it doesn't look good. Making a road for instance you want textures in your png.,

So:

Can't you make, in future, usage of a black and white layer? Or white and other colors (speed down, speed up :p)

Nice idea! Only kinda small levels when i look at the png files. (not installed the game tho) can you make it so we can make wider levels so the game scrols?

I can't steer the ball, keeps going in 1 direction ...

do you have isntructions? :)

It's nice, but..after game over I every time have to restart the game since it simply just won't go back to the splash screen?

this is a know limitation right now. I just wanted you to present the first version as soon as possible and then spend time in making it better and adjust it to your needs... Next version can restart/change levels without exiting the whole game...

Yeah, this thought already came to me, too... I will try to change the "valid" color to magenta (for example) and make all parts of the image, that are magenta, transparent so the levelmakers can make custom backgrounds and are not bound to the white one...
The speed down, speed up feature sound's good... so I need at least 3 valid colors (normal speed, speed up, speed down...) I will try and let you know...

Nice idea! Only kinda small levels when i look at the png files. (not installed the game tho) can you make it so we can make wider levels so the game scrols?

you can design the level as large as you want them to be...

I can't steer the ball, keeps going in 1 direction ...

do you have isntructions? :)

mmh, strange... but did you try to steer the ball with the g-sensor? it should work like the Teeter game...

Agree with akido, when "game over" it doesn't return to the menu, so you'll have to restart the game.

I'm also having problems controlling the ball. It moves, but not very well. Sometimes it seems to move in the correct direction, but it just keeps accelerating until it hits a wall.
I have tried to change the settings of sensitivity, velocity and radius, but no luck...

Mr.Eliot

It's really unresponsive on the steering input by tilting, even set on easy.
And it doesn't remeber the chosen settings.

Neat idea, keep on!! :)

Agree with all the comments. It's a really nice idea, and I love the concept!

I'd like to see more responsiveness on the controls, and it might make it nicer if you were in control of a helicopter or some other "flying machine" rather than a ball... ;)

Same here, it doesn't really repsonse very well even after I have changed it to easy, it's not like the Tweeter game.

v0.2 released!! for details/download look at the first page

1. now you can restart the game
2. the controll of the ball should now be better... Please try it... My intention is not to make it "like Teeter" because Caver is a different game, but I agree that the ball should react smoothly and in a correct way...

But as you are developing, you say the ball goes on the white. Its a pity for levelmakers to NEED white, it doesn't look good. Making a road for instance you want textures in your png.,

3. I tried to make a color transparent and set a background image... well, but that doesn't work very well (it lags pretty much now), so I have to find another solution

4. Any other features are coming soon - had a long day...

Hope you like it!

hi..

v0.2 is not working for me om NL1.37 ROM. Didn't had the chance to try v0.1.
But after installing and clicking the icon everything is fine, but when hitting the start button game won't start.. error!

A soft reset didn't solved the problem..

Any idea ageye what could be the problem?

found a way to be independent of white background color... also (at least I think) I found a way to make areas in which the ball accelerates or slows down like in the higher levels in the Teeter game.

So big changes which are planned for the next version:
- cool textured levels (I still need YOU to design new levels ;-))
- Highscore (maybe even with online highscore list)

Unfortunately I have to work a lot now so it will take a little bit longer than usual, but as soon a new feature will be finished, I'll tell you here...

New version online!

Some things I'd like to say about it:

1. I improved the control of the ball and I'm pretty happy with it (I think it's nearly perfect)
Please report how you like it with the default settings
If you find better settings, please attach your settings.xml file - Thanks!

2. The levels can now be textured... the 2 built-in levels look ugly - Please help me to make better textures or design new ones...

3. There are now areas, where the ball accelerates or slows down. Please report if the acceleration is good enough...

4. Calibration of the G-sensor: you can now calibrate the G-sensor (Start screen -> Menu -> Calibrate)... It might still happen that the ball doesn't stand perfectly still, if it's calibrated because there are always small differences even if you the phone is on a flat surface...

5. Screenshots: I'll update the screenshots soon

6. Build your own levels: I will add a small Howto soon so it is easier for you to build your own levels...

7. My Todo list is pretty empty, so if you have any ideas, please write them down!

Thanks for playing and supporting Caver ;-)

I'd like to announce a new version. I think I can release it today if everything works well...
New features:
- Skinnable balls
- Options simplified to "Easy", "Medium", "Hard", "Expert"
- Therefore new highscore managment (all your current highscore lists will be invalid - sorry)
- And best of all: Online highscore lists!!!

please add tilt sensor sensitivity dialog - such thing is in iPhone games - because now for me your game is not playable because it is too sensitive.

In other words: big movements of phone should be small movements of ball - configurable.

go to the options on the start screen and please post here your settings.xml (stored in the folder where you installed caver) so I can see what are the best values...

When I'm done with the new version there will be no customizeable tilt sensor sensitivity because of the online highscore functionality... so I have to find the best setting for it...

New version online!

You can see the changelog on the first page...

I just want to say something about the highscore list:

Although the highscore page (http://caver.ageye.de) lacks still in functionality, all your score you submit to the online highscore list will be saved!

That means: Although the current list isn't available yet to view, your score is saved and you will be able to see the list in a few days...

When you're in the game, your current rank will be displayed after upload of your score...

How can you submit your score?

Simply register for free at http://caver.ageye.de and type your account data in when you're asked ingame...
Caver will then send some bytes (propably < 2kb) to the server and submits your score...

Please report me if it works or not! You help me very very very much!

ageye

Your suggestions and ideas for the next version(s):

one idea:
what about adding some "obstacles" that you can / "have to" fire in order to pass, etc etc....... :):p

Great idea, I'm going to implement it...

please add tilt sensor sensitivity dialog - such thing is in iPhone games - because now for me your game is not playable because it is too sensitive.

As you can see in the latest version (0.4) there is no more sensitivity option due to the online highscore list (I just wanted to make it difficult to cheat)
I thought about your suggestion and had the idea, that you can adjust the sensitivity to your needs but without being able to play for the online list.
If you want to play for it, you can simply restore the settings to the internet settings... I think this would be the best compromise...

Announcement of the next version:
I finally made it to reduce the lags ingame due to loading the level graphics every 480 pixels... This is a big improvement and so I think I will release the next version today or tomorrow without big new features...

Why not now? Because there are 2 small things I'd like to change, then I'll release it...

After this next release, I'll be working first on the homepage of Caver, so that you can see the highscore list and more information and afterwards I'll implement your suggestions...

Thanks for playing Caver

I just uploaded v0.5. I hope you like it. The biggest change is the preloading of the level. Therefore it doesn't lag anymore.

Therefore I could implement the support at least for Samsung Omnia (probably also other devices)

Are you going to change the GUI on your game? i made some mockups... maybe have the user flip through the level using the touch feature of the diamond?

wow, thanks for the nice level and screenshots. Actually I somehow stopped the development of Caver because noone supported its development neither by donating nor by building levels.
You're the 2nd one who made a new level. I will think over it. If you want to you can send me your graphics so I can update it as soon as I got time...

Hi guys, I've noticed that caver is really similar to helicopter/iCopter, but lacks the possibility to control it by touching the screen like the iCopter game.
I think it's pretty easy to modify this game to have touch controls, but I don't have any experience creating games at all. I've made a thread about this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441500 and I've made the helicopter icon too. There's also some more information about what iCopter is in that thread too. Anyway, please check that thread out if you know something about making games. Thanks

The same for me, movement is choppy. I'm not saying it's not playable, but it's annoying. Maybe WVGA fix could help, have to try it. Space invaders working no prob. by the way on HD.

EDIT:
Ok, with WVGAFIX3 480x640 works just fine, smooth movement (well there is a little freeze from time to time, but nothing big).

Dear users,
we made a fantastically way which started here. In the great community of xda-developers.com
I love this forum and its user but unfortunately after over 3000 posts about my software (yeah!!) it has become soooo hard to reply to all of your questions / ideas / bug reports because one topic per tool is just confusing...

That's why I uploaded my own forum to my server and I recommend you to post your problems / ideas there. There is more space for it and I'll be there more often!

Thank you for everything! I hope you understand this decision and I'll see you over there!

Some of you know me and my tools since the beginning and support my way through all ups and downs. I need some moderators over there who keep the forum clean and move the posts to the right locations. If you're interested, just register and pm me.

If I ever release a new tool, this community will be the first to know ;)
