Hi
I've just got a HTC diamond and i absolutley love it!

I have one question though and thats reguarding 3g signal strength. The town where I work has three 3g masts surrounding it and yet the most i ever seem to get is 2 bars when im outside, a lot of the time it hovers around 1/2 - the most i think i've seen if 3 very briefly. At one point I was less than a mile and had clear line of sight to the mast and only had 2 bars.

Is this normal? Am I expecting too much?

My radio version is .03 as shipped with the phone. I shall try upgrading to one of the newer ones but will it really make that much of a difference?

Thanks :)

Huw

Hey!

I also noticed this and I have been trying to read up on how to switch to 05 radio. I have some questions about that.

1. Do I have to re flash the whole ROM in order to do that?
2. If not, can I only re flash the radio part?
3. What will I loose in the phone, I guess programs and settings - but what about files on the internal memory?

I have ROM version 1.37.413.3 SVE (Swedish)
Radio 1.00.25.03

I guess I am mostly concerned that I will have to settle on a english ROM and loose things like swedish T9 and such ...

Hi,

1. No, the radio has nothing to do with a full rom update. It only updates the radio unit of your phone.
2. Yes, you can.
3. You will loose nothing instead of your old radio rom ;-)

AFAIK the radio rom is always an international version...

I have ... Radio 1.00.25.03

I found the reception on the 03 Radio was absolutely terrible. The 05 Radio makes a huge difference.

Cheers ! Thats what i wanted to hear. Incidently does this apply to 3g coverage? Where i am now has 2 3g masts about 1000 yards in each opposite direction. Outdoor signal 2 bars! Only time I get full signal is almost stood right next to the mast and maybe up to about 500-700 yards line of sight.

I hope I'm not going to disappoint you, but I don't notice any difference between the 03 radio and the 05. I've tried cause I was having a weaker reception on my Diamond in comparison to my Tytn. I don't notice any difference when it comes to 3G. The save power part I don't know yet, since I'm just using 05 for a day now :)

Odd. I have had better reception under 05 - I keep a close eye on it because I live in a porr reception area. I have recently gone through an Athena and a 9502. The Diamond reception on 03 was shocking. On 05 it is better than either the Athena or the 9502.

Do I really need to use HardSPL in order to flash a new Radio? I haven't seen my current stock SPL version around - and I guess I'll need that in case of warranty?

Maybe someone who knows what he's talking about should really update the Wiki - not only with the "dos" but also with the "whys" and most importantly some "how-to-undos" :-)

Cheers,
Alex

Yes you will need a HardSPL as there is no other way to flash your ROM. I also moved from the 03 radio to 05 radio. And noticed no significant change on HSDPA (3.5G), it helped 3G slightly and helped GSM (2G) as well.
I can’t comment on battery life because its crap either way. Its honestly the worst phone I have ever owned without a shadow of doubt in terms of battery life! But then I look at the phone and all is forgiven :)

Oh well, I look forward to the replacement next year, here’s hoping it has everything the diamond has, plus, bigger battery, expandable memory and WM7, oh and much faster out of the box.

Final comment, I will never be able to go back to a QVGA screen again!

I dont see any advantages using a .05 or .06 radio rom. Exactly the same reception as the original. Only thing i see with the new radio roms is people having trouble with the GPS.

Seems i'm not the only one to have this problem, have a look here:

The pic of it next to a nokia is interesting!
