View Full Version : 1800mah Clove battery - first impressions

im in hong kong soon so ill get a bigger and beter one then :)
Why do you have to wait for Hong Kong?
Got my 1800mah battery through from Clove today and charged it up all last night.
First impressions:
The back is exactly the same design (including wobbly back) as the original just the sides are about twice the size i.e. "tall". If you look at the USB port on the back, the phone is now about this much again deep so, not that bad. I know feck all about battery technology but it does appear to me that there is a lot of wasted space now under the case.
The case itself also has an extended "peep hole" for the the camera to look out of. Initialy when you look at it, it doesn't seem wide enough for the camera but after testing I can only conclude it is as it does not affect camera operation.
The battery is a small chunky affair thats exactly the same shape as the original with about twice the depth. After a full charge last night, Batti 2.0 seems to tell me its only got around 95% charge. This could be for two reasons I guess? Batti is not designed to cope with 1800mah batteries and/or the battery will require further charges to come to max power. It of course adds a little weight but, at the moment i've not really noticed it.
All in all, so far, it seems a good purchase. Will let you know how performance is over today and tomorrow (btw, im a heavy user with push mail etc and also work in an office which has feck all signal - i.e. radio on full xmit all day).

Do you use any cases? If so, how does it fit there? Is it to big or so?
Monty Burns
24th July 2008, 09:30 AM
No I don't. The phone, even with this battery is still small enough to fit in most of my jeans pockets.
"Are you pleased to see me or is that phone in your pocket?"

I bought it direct from Clove on the link above. I ordered as a pre-order so it actually took around 10 days or so. I believe they have them in stock now so you should be looking at around 2 or 3 days I guess?

Got my 1800mah battery through from Clove today and charged it up all last night. I got it also from Clove. Have you tested GPS yet? My Diamond can't find any satellites with 1800mAh battery! Yesterday GPS worked fine with original battery! I can't test original battery now because I'm at work... I will test again original if I find way to my home!

Ouchies! That would be really bad if its the battery.
Sadly, I fecked around with my GPS settings and I can't find them on here anywhere to correct them so none of my GPS apps work. If someone could tell me which ports/baud rate etc I can try my GPS out here at work.

Some Q's:
- How long does the full battery last? For example with GPS + screen on (with the 900 it will only last about 1.5h).
- Can someone measure how much thicker the device is with the new cover (original is almost 12mm and I really hope it does not add 6mm)?
- Do photos look better/worse with the new cover?
Thanks!

Looks like I have a far worse issue!
I try to use the GPS and it won't lock anything, google maps shows 0 satelites. I looked at Windows->Settings->GPS and it shows a Hardware port of "none" no matter how many times I change and OK it.
Any ideas?

You don't have to change External GPS setting from Systems -> Setup. Only if you use External (Bluetooth) GPS! If you use internal Diamond GPS leave them default. In Google Maps tell it to use "set by Windows."
You can setup some (like Run.GPS Trainer UV) -programs manually if "set by Windows" don't work, these programs have own COM and baudrate setup to internal GPS.

well thats truley f*&king sh*^. I have to chose now, every day I go out, Push email OR gps as you can't have both!
I tried a few 3rd party apps and all gave me good feedback about finding the modem etc but unable to lock. Nice one HTC. Lets
Some genious at HTC decided to put the GPS aerial right where extended batteries would block it. How dare we try and use ALL the features on our phones ... at the SAME time!
In case you hadn't guessed, yes your right Spaca, I cannot lock on to a GPS signal. Guess I won't be throwing away my external GPS sitting at home.
Will try the original battery when I get home and post my findings here.

Strange. Perhaps the cover is made out of something metallic so the receiver doesn't get any signal? That would be plain stupid though... Or the battery itself covers the receiver area. Does the bigger battery also have a bigger footprint or is it only thicker?
Monty Burns
24th July 2008, 02:56 PM
the one i have is a very thin plastic, no metal anywhere....
I just think the GPS is designed to work through some material and that limit has been reached with the new battery.

I have purchased one of these batteries. I also purchased a Alu leather case from Clove at the same time. The case is very nice with a sheet of flight grade aluminium to protect the screen.
The problem with the new battery is that it it is double the thickness of the original and the case is also double the width meaning it won't fit in the new case. :S
When out and about I am using the original battery (in the case) but if I know I am going to need the extra juice or if I am watching a film or browsing the net in the back garden I can switch to the thicker battery.
I am struggling to get the GPS to work even with the original battery (though haven't really tried proper outside) let alone with the thicker one but it's strange how some plastic can stop it working?

no point.
a; whats the point in not having the back on? the battery will fall out!
b; the back plastic is a very thin bit of plastic and nothing more. Its FAR more likely that its because we are dealing with a double width battery.
What you have to ask yourself is, why did the idiots put the GPS receiver behind the battery compartment!!!!!! AT least, thats the way it looks at the moment ...

Does the inside of the Diamond's battery compartment have 2 metal tab contacts that mesh the metal plate on the original battery? I can't see how a battery would degrade the GPS signal to the point that it's not seeing any satellites.

I use GPS with iGO8 every day - for fun, but browsing on net is a necessity 4 me and i don't wanna lose thoose function :(( Any luck? Maybe it was just a first impresion?

According to the Diamond service manual the GPS coaxial cable runs from top to bottom just next to the battery. I'm not sure where the antenna actually is located at but it seems its on the upmost part of the case and said cable is connecting the circuit in the bottom with the antenna in the top part.

Could you please measure the exact thickness with new cover? Is it 17mm?
And has battery life really doubled (you could do a quick-test with GPS + screen on, which was about 1.5h with the 900MAh battery)?
Has photo quality improved with the new cover?
Thanks!

Be patient. Seidio will have their OEM sized extended battery out shortly. End of July they said. It should be around the 1100maH mark but same size as original. They have done this before for other phones. I'm at least hanging back til I hear something about that.

took the battery off charge this morning at 11am I've had my data connection on and DSDPA as well as push email. Been on the net for about an hour used RSShub. Google maps with GPS on now the time is 11:45 pm, battery is @60% charge.
Does the cover look thick Yes
Does it feel Thick No
why not: because of the beveled edges
Does the cover fit as good as the original No
Has the phone reset when using this battery YES
Does the phone feel as hot: well not as much as before
I have the ebay on order
Will i but the official extended battery: depends on battery life with all functions set to on as above.

With the extended battery, GPS does not work for me either.
Also, I don't understand why the back cover is so thick? The battery itself is double the thickness of the original one. This means to fit the battery all that is needed is a slight, possibly stylisch, bump in the back cover.
Why do they waste so much space by making the whole back cover come out that much? I hope there's other replacement covers coming out. I would also like to replace that glossy back surface with something rubberized, easyer to hold and would look more 'bussines' then 'play' in a stylish way.
The battery itself i'm very happy with. I can't say exact figures but it was like 40% charged when it arrived, I started using it immidiately and after 2 days it's still like 35% or something. I'm not a heavy user it's like 15mins calls, 10 texts, 30min surfing, 30min bluetooth and in total maybe 1h of other stuff (checking time, reading messages, agenda etc...) each day. No regular GPS use. So I'm very happy with the caapcity of the batter but the back cover SUCKS.

could you clarify what you meant by "not enough power to use GPS"? I didnt quite understand that sentence lol. how can it have not enough power, when it has, erm, double capacity? What if i connect it to a car charger?
upon returning the battery do they give you your money back? i asked my sis to buy one for me from UK before seeing this thread, and she'll be back in Malaysia soon. its bloody expensive for me T.T and its kinda pointless if cannot use GPS.

I actually don't mind the look of it even with the extra thickness... I mean I have purchased my TD after owning a Sony K750i for two years so the extra heft isn't a problem, and I think it looks much better than the extended batteries on ebay that are slim except for a pronounced hump where the battery is...

You guys
it's crazy but the problem for the gps is the back cover
i tried with my original battery to take off the back cover and it lost the gps signal
So even with the original battery without the back cover you have no signal at all try it :).
then i put the cover near my phone and the signal returns even without closing the cover correctly just keeping it attached to my phone so it just acts as an antenna can you people who have the 1800 mah battery try to take off the fat back cover and keep the original back cover attached and confirm if there is gps signal?

intrestly that 1800 battery has been pulled from the site that one of the frst posters mentioned, ive asked for details.
Its possible that an increase in battery size could make a EM barrier but that wouldnt really explain things since thephone "should" work the other way up, unless it has some major radiation leakage or something, but if the original case has some form of metal to it, the phone might use that as a antena, simple thing to check would be
firstly
original battery and back
then extended battery and extended back
then try original battery and extended back
then try both batteries and both backs
if someone could to that it would clear up any confusion about whats going on

ROM SwiftBL Diamond v5.0; Radio 1.00.25.07
Static position, cold fix, under clear sky, under car screen; Location - Lahore, Pakistan
Phone and GPRS on; Reset [battery removal] between each step
GPS software = Garmin XT
Extended battery, with its own cover = no satellites or 3d fix in 5 minutes
Extended battery, without any cover = no satellites or 3d fix in 5 minutes
Standard battery, without any cover = no satellites or 3d fix in 5 minutes
Standard battery, with its own cover = 2 satellites within 20 seconds, 3d fix in 4 min 50 sec
I did NOT try extended battery + placement of the standard cover nearby [as suggested by someone here on this forum] but it seems that the placement of the standard back cover has something to do with improving the GPS signal
Perhaps someone can repeat this to confirm...
Edit:
Some further testing
Extended battery, without any cover = no satellites or 3d fix in 5 minutes
Without disconnecting, placed original supplied cover at the back, nothing for another 5 minutes
Standard battery, without any cover = no satellites or 3d fix in 5 minutes
Without disconnecting, placed original cover in place, nothing for another 5 minutes
Remove and reinsert standard battery, with standard cover in place, restart Garmin XT, fix within 2 minutes
Remove and reinsert standard battery, without cover, no fix or satellites for 10 minutes
Remove and reinsert standard battery, with standard cover, again, fix within a minute
All a bit confusing but it seems that the only setting i get a fix is with the original battery+original cover in place.
I guess if someone else could replicate these findings, we may be nearer an answer

thats really odd, i wonder if the battery cover pushes some contacts or bridges a connection to make the GPS work or perhaps improve reception
