View Full Version : GPS Software Included?

Hi folks:

There is no information on software included on the HTC Touch Pro. I assume that GPS software (and maps) is probably not included, but am wondering if the GPS can be used with google maps (as is done in the iPhone 3G).

Any info on this will be greatly appreciated. I am on the fence between the iPhone and Raphael...

Thanks.

You can use every navigation software like Google Maps, Navigon, TomTom etc. with the integrated GPS.

Thank you, although that makes the choice so much harder :-)

Google Maps is delivered as part of the base ROM, same as for iPhone.

But of course for a Windows Mobile device you have more choices with several 3rd party GPS software packages (both free ones and chargeable ones).

Handtec (http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/1352/htc-touch-pro-premium) sell a version shipped with Tom Tom Navigator 6. As you can see from the link it's a bit pricey! The thing is, about a month ago the "Premium" version - as they call it - was actually cheaper than the standard one , that was when I placed my pre-order for a "premium" one :D they will have to honour it now!

I'm hoping that since they are shipping it with the Tom Tom software, there will also be some sort of cradle in the box to mount it to the windscreen or dashboard. Anyone know if this is true or am I hoping for too much?

I doubt they will ship a cradle, they only come with the tomtom software and not the maps, you have to purchase the maps to work with it.
Its the same deal as with the diamond, so its unlikely you will get a cradle in the box.

No, they definitely come with maps on that site. If you click on my link you'll notice a drop-down menu under the picture where you can choose to have UK/Ireland maps or the full Western European maps for an extra £19.99.

I chose the Western Europe one, £20 didn't seem like much to pay to me. I don't know what tomtom's map prices are like, but at the moment I'm using a Navman sat-nav system in my car and I've never upgraded the maps for that because their prices are horrendous! Having said that, I've never actually done any sat-nav assisted driving outside the UK so I don't know if I'll ever take advantage of the extra maps - I have used my Navman on holiday in Majorca to help me find a McDonalds on foot though lol so I expect I will use them at some point even if I'm not driving at the time!

I thought the diamond came with TT7 application to which you had to buy maps. As TT6 is an old version and the maps are out of date, i would suggest we wait to find out if HTC are shipping the TT7 application on the software disk. There has been a lot of discussion on the Kaiser forum regarding TT7 from the Diamond.

I have used both TT6 and TT7 on my Kaiser. The latest TT6 maps are version 675, whereas TT7 can use the same maps as the Go910 - with map versions in the 700's. These are much more upto date and support the map share feature.

To be honest I don't really mind if the maps are out of date, I'm not going to be using it as a sat-nav much anyway - once or twice a month if that!

I'll be sure to post back in this thread though and let you know what version of maps I get and whether I get my beloved cradle or not ;)

I just noticed that Handtec also sell the tomtom software on its own. It says on the info page that the maps included are version 6.75, so I'm pretty sure that that is what I'm going to get.

On the plus side, when I deduct the price they're asking for the European map version of Navigator 6 from the price I paid for my Touch Pro premium pre-order, it works out that I'm only paying £460 for the hardware! I'm pretty happy with that, considering the cheapest price I can find for a Touch Pro on it's own is currently £499.95. As I said earlier though, when I placed my order the premium version was cheaper than the standard one - I'm sure they've made a mistake there but I ain't complaining! ;)

I also just looked on Kelkoo, Froogle, and uk.shopping.com and I couldn't find a single website selling version 7 of the tomtom software, so I don't think that it's actually been released as separate software yet - maybe it just comes with certain devices at the moment :(

As promised, I'm just posting to update everyone. I didn't get a cradle, just got the standard Touch Pro kit that everyone else got.

The software was in a separate anti-static (metallic) bag pre-loaded onto a Kingston 2GB micro SD card (would only be a 1GB card if you only buy UK maps), which comes with adaptors for mini and full size SD and there was also an A4 sheet of paper containing my TomTom product code and installation instructions.

I don't actually know what version my maps are... it doesn't say anywhere on the A4 sheet and I can't find any way of getting the software to tell me. Anyone know how I can find out? (not that I'm really bothered by it as I said before, but someone might want to know! lol)

I already have an in-car charger from my Vario II days, so all I need now is the cradle. Best deal on that I could find was a universal one from mobilefun (http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/12635.htm) which looks like it will do the job. It was only £7.45 including shipping. I've ordered it and got an e-mail within the hour saying it has been shipped.

The touch pro does not comes with TOMTOM, and the TT6 that came with the TYTN II will not install on the T-PRO does not like the rom.

Take a look at this thread here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401691). I installed the VGA version on my Raphael and it's working fine :)

Offcourse, it excludes the maps, you'll have to get those yourself.

I got my cradle in the post this morning (VERY fast service from mobilefun - 16 hours from order to delivery!).

Just tried it out and it fits the touch pro perfectly - doesn't cover the volume buttons, microphone or speaker. The mounting arm is flexible yet firm, so it's not likely to suddenly bend itself out of position when you go over a bump. Seems to be ideal for the job, there's even a photo frame built into it so you can put your favourite photo behind your device (a bit pointless I know, but still...)
