Here is a report on some "quality time" with the Touch Pro on Cnet Asia (http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001708,43545247p,00.htm)... sounds promissing :D - and honestly: I like Touchflo with the upcoming TouchXperience (http://www.touchxperience.com/) a lot more than the Xperia Interface...

08/12/08: Check out new pics on engadget - HTC Touch Pro hands on (http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/11/htc-touch-pro-hands-on/) - best image quality I have seen so far :D

At least in the software video it appears to be the case. The TouchFlo 3D interface is very smooth and responsive.

I hope they are going to tweak TouchFlo in landscape mode a bit more to make it more "shiny". But honestly using the keyboard this is more than sufficient. What do you want with the weather panel while using the keyboard? Being able to access all the typing applications quickly with the keyboard out makes most sense to me.
And I guess that using the home button while being in any other application while sliding out the keyboard will bring you back to the landscape touch flo interface (3D it is not... :()

I agree 100%. This alone might make be enough to make me jump ship (and the driver debacle, that too). The jog wheel means that much to me.

its a TOUCH category , so it should have less HW keys

I dont want to seem funny or anything, but in what little I can find out about this phone, I have deduced that it is everything the touch diamond is... except for it has a keyboard... and that the landscape "touchflo 3d" is pretty much 8 icons...

please, someone tell me im wrong and that ive missed something here...

Touch Pro has:

More RAM (288MB)
LED light for camera
Hardware keyboard
Higher battery capacity
TV out
microSDHC slot (instead of built-in 4GB in Diamond)

it's possible that I forgot something...:)

billgatessucks

more RAM ay... i guess it depends on whether it really will speed up things, or whether itll go back to the usual problem of the graphics drivers being non-exsistant.

Personally, and im probably on my own here, it just seems that the pro will be £100+ more because it has a keyboard and a few more little things... dont get me wrong, i got my kaiser because i love having a real qwerty etc, i just wish that it had a bit more "oomph" behind it than the diamond... and some graphic drivers ;)

Nah, doesn't excite me either!:p

Anyhoo, you end up with around 200MB Program memory and 320MB Storage Memory just after a hard reset. That's more than on my advantage!!

Hi,

I wonder what is the efficiency about the flash led.

Will be the same than i have on my dear old Qteck 9100 or will it be more usefull like an numeric photo device ?

May be some videos could reply to my wonders...?

I don't like how they did away with all the hardware buttons. That's going to be a pain-in-the-rear.

Fully agreed. Compared to the TyTN II (which it supposedly replaces) it misses:

(1) tilting of screen - coupled with the edgy back cover this means the device will not be usable while sitting on a desk, you have to hold it in your hands to type
(2) jog wheel - why not add one on the right hand of the device where it has plenty of space?
(3) OK key on the keyboard
(4) Microsoft Start menu key on the keyboard

The last two can be worked around by touching on the screen to open the start menu, or pressing the Return / OK button next to the Dpad. This is (a) a bit cumbersome because you juggle between typing on the keyboard and moving your fingers then to the upper part of the device, and (b) it likely makes your screen more greasy.

On the other hand I find the dedicated MMS / SMS button unnecessary, it would have been better to place the key for (4) above here to open the Start menu.

Having said this, after getting used to it, it is workable and the keyboard itself is quite nice. I was initially worried that the addition of a 5th row will make the keys too small but this is not the case. They are a little smaller but well layed out and separated from one another. The additional row for numbers makes text entry more effective.

Good point (am not using camera often).

The standard Button assignment tool only covers the call key, you would need a 3rd party app to map the volume keys (haven't tried).

Also note that once you slide out the keyboard the volume keys become almost inaccessible as they sit just above your 2 - 4 number keys on the keyboard. But when not using the keyboard it would be useful.

fireblade63
4th August 2008, 01:25 AM
Actually, the volume buttons will reside on the lower side of the keyboard in landscape mode (opposite TyTN II).
For mapping, if I remember the s/w name correctly was Aebutton plus or something like that which did the deed.
Also ran in a program from Vito for button mapping, can't remember which was better though.
I just need to assign the camera, a task manager (quick menu) and resco file explorer as double or triple presses etc...
That's the problem with the "Touch" series.
I would always prefer more h/w buttons.

But the VGA screen, the accelerometer, the processor speed, the RAM & ROM size, the neat look which is not as any PPC at last etc... is making me want it.
But CONS really are:
1) no tilting mechanism which is the worst of all for me
2) no 3.5mm jack
3) alot of h/w buttons missing (Camera, voice dialing/recording, side jogger..)
4) QWERTY missing Ok and Start buttons (again remapping for example symbols button)
5) TV-out cable not included (who knows when it will show)

Other than that, it will be great...in time with cooked ROMs:D

There are some new images of the Touch Pro which can be found here (http://www.ppc-welt.info/community/showpost.php?p=1110934&postcount=180).
Seems like they have changed the backcover a little bit. The backside has no longer a Diamond shape and isn't glossy at all.
(Coming from a TyTN it finally looks familiar to me again - I like those HTC bricks) :)

I don't like design of the back cover of the O2 one compared to the HTC one - it looks too boring and loses all of the quirkiness. Having said that, It does look flatter, which might make it more practical I suppose

By the way, what's that Sony Ericsson phone in the bottom picture? I had a Sony Ericsson phone (a T610) a few years back and it was the most reliable phone I ever had - I didn't know they made phones with slide-out qwerty keyboards though! Still it's too late now for me to change my mind I was just curious!

It's an Xperia X1. This phone has been one of the biggest announcements of the year, but so far I haven't seen anything really concrete about it.

jwhitham posted in another thread on this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2458365#post2458365) that the Raphael's 640x480 screen is actually better than the Xperia's 800x480 screen because there are lots of apps that won't work at 800x480. If this is the case I'd be inclined to agree.

IMO however, the only thing the Xperia has over the Touch Pro is being physically smaller and therefore more portable, as evidenced by the picture that I first spotted it in :D Mind you I just took another look and it doesn't look a fantastic amount smaller, only slightly. I can't be bothered to look up the exact dimensions because I'm not really interested in it ;) All I know is the Touch Pro, although still "big" for a phone, is quite a bit smaller than my Vario II brick, and that's good enough for me :)

Nope... The Touch Pro is smaller LxW, and just 1.05mm thicker.

Touch Pro: 102 mm (L) X 51 mm (W) X 18.05 mm (T) Volume = 93,896.1 mm^3
Xperia X1: 110 mm (L) X 53 mm (W) X 17.00 mm (T) Volume = 99,110.0 mm^3

So the Touch Pro is about the same size as my O2 Zinc, though thinner. thats good, as the touch pro is what I am looking at to replace the "old dear".

Like the volume calc, nice addition!

Well I figured, a lot of times the thickness can be irrelevant in a pocket if it's smaller overall... Example, my Duo felt much better than an iPhone in my pocket even though the iPhone is much thinner.

Anyone noticed the cool new weather animations? I LOVE the rain landing on the screen and then the windscreen wiper suddenly appearing from the top to wipe it off!!! That is SO COOL :D

Not seen it yet? Best place to go is the official HTC site but I can't link directly there cos it's flash based! What you have to do is go to http://www.htc.com/uk/product.aspx?id=55322 then wait for the thin grey progress bar under the icons to get all the way across. Once that's done, click on the weather icon and watch in amazement :)

I am really concerned with Camera quality and performance.
I hope we can shoot decent videos and shots with this device.
At least be able to zoom in and out while video capturing (N/A in Kaiser)
Also, how well is the flash or the LED on the back is very important.
Reviews of software and hardware are great but I would really love it if we can get some feedback from any concept device holder (if any are around)..

I'm a noob to WM, comming from Symbian UIQ and I've preordered a Touch Pro and I got a Q about TouchXperience, I mean WOW, what a software!!

But I don't understand, when reading the homepage: http://www.touchxperience.com/

At the bottom there's a Donate - Paypal link, does that mean that this soft will be a freeware or what?!?

Because if so, I'd be MORE than willing to donate, but I've hard time believing that such an advanced soft will be free.

So please, enlighten me!

And also, anyone got a clue on when it will be ready for the market?

This unboxing video is great for another reason for those of us across the pond in the US. Look at the video at about 6:57 or so and you will see an FCC Logo under where the battery is housed. While I could be wrong, this, some way suggests to me that the hardware between the US and EURO GSM Touch Pro's are the same and the radio rom is what is locking down the bands. The other answer could be is that they decided to cert the phone as is(w/o hardware for US 3G) but that would seem to be a waste of their time.

Those of you that have this phone over in Europe/UK what is the Model ID and FCC ID of this device?

I cant remember the reference (maybe burried somewhere in this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=416343) thread) but I believe this may well be the case - ie. HTC put all hardware versions through the FCC, including ones never destined for the US.

Hi guys and girls!

I've been waiting on that for a bit now, hope it comes soon. Can't wait to be able to flick my wrist and navigate touchflo 3D :)

Ya I hear there's a G sensor on the rapheal but no ones got a review out with it or any use for it... There is definetly a G-sensor isn't there?

It's a private project, yet not released. I am sure the developer keeps track of people who donated... I would not be afraid. And if it is worth paying for the better it is :D

Yep, that's Schaps' latest project, isn't it? One of the most respected members around here...

There definitely is a G-Sensor (or Accelerometer). Usage was mentioned in quite a lot of detail during the coolsmartphone 7-day video review of the Diamond, and it's identical in the Raphael.

Currently it's basically used to rotate the screen when in Opera or Photo Album, and it's used in the "Teeter" game - where you roll a ball around a maze by tipping your phone, and have to avoid holes all over the place.

Apart from that, if the phone rings while it's face up on a table, you can turn it face down to mute the ringer. Beyond that, I can't think of much else at the moment.

Given a bit more time, you'll be able to do all sorts with the G-Sensor. Just have a look at Schaps' upcoming TouchXperience, mentioned a few posts higher up...

I'm a little disappointed that no one has tried any benchmarks in Coreplayer or D3D benchmark apps or games. Considering all the talk with the TYTN II video issues and what not you think some of the sites would put those concerns to rest by now...

The review on mobility today is nice (see first post) ... although it does not focus much on the keyboard. The reviewer is praising the device. You might think a bit too much. However, read their HTC Touch Diamond review and you will know that they actually have a differential opinion...
