Help me build an Idiots Guide to a ROM update?

I've just purchased a Diamond and its great, but before I start to install things on it I want to upgrade it to a newer ROM as I read its better and makes it run faster.

I've been doing lots of reading about installing ROM's and about this Hard-SPL thingo, and I'm a bit confused. Is there an idiots guide to a ROM update? I can't find one, so I figure that this thread can be the start of it.
Here is my first attempt, so please correct me where I am wrong:

IDIOTS GUIDE TO A DIAMOND ROM UPDATE
1) Backup existing ROM (how is this done?)
2) Install Hard-SPL? (which version, & How? The thread on this is very long)
3) Install new 1.93WWE ROM
4) Enjoy new ROM
