View Full Version : [APP]Beer Program for Diamond (G-Sensor)

I've seen the program beer on the internet for the iphone. its a app that simulate a full beer glass (see video link),
there is also another program for the nokia n95 called pypiwo that's simulating a beer to and many other drinks.
I thinks it's a very nice idea for a new app for the diamond .
it's not a very difficult concept, the only hard part is the graphical stuff(i think don't have much experience on making programs and graphical stuff ).
i'd love to make this app by my self but i don't have the knowledge for it  (any tips/lecture for learning how to make this apps for the diamond is always welcome: D)
but to the point:p this thread is for your thoughts about this and to find someone to make this

You guys complain about a beer app being useless, but what use is something as a Lightsaber app? Though that gets praised sky high! I think it's a funny idea, shows off the accelerometer of te Diamond which is bloody accurate and perfect for this stuff. Would love to make an app like that, if only I had ANY knowledge of programming :P

This >does< exist on the N95 and unlike the iPhone, works with the acc. meter.
I had it myself before trading it for the Diamond and had that software installed on the phone.
It was pretty accurate in the way I lifted it, the beer would move.
While it is a "waste" - I think it's a nice gimmick to have on the phone, whether its to show off or just some entertainment - like any other game that would be on it

Is this what you had in mind for the beer ? :)
A first rough application that simulates drinking. Again not yet as complete as I wanted it to be.
Usage:
Start the program and keep close to your mouth, you don't want to spill the beer ! Next "drink" from your PDA.
Menu -> New Drink refills your glass/PDA.
Any feedback about problems is appreciated !
BTW: usefulness: keeps stress levels down. (Studies show that even the anticipation of a joke can reduce your stress-level by 70 % !)
New version:
DiamondBeer2, which is developed with C++ and does not rely on the .NET CF framework.
Enhancements:
- Beer "label" on your glass.
- multiple types of drinks: "Duvel" is the default, and a root beer (non-alcoholic) for kids :p (shows how "skins" would work).
- Bubbles in the glass ( go always up)
- If you tilt your "glass" to far, the beer empties immediately. (careful, you might get wet)
- Icon in "programs" group is again not visible now
Done:
- added "foam" (not for all drinks). I could use some artistic help here, because I need a texture which allows me to draw foam without "lines" in it. This is the first rough graphic, I am working on improving the algorithm.
- added "glass" again. Still not optimal, maybe better when I convert the application to OpenGL ES
- uses full-screen mode. Tap on the screen to get the menu back
- better algorithms for flow of beer and foam. I got the rough ideas now, just need to work them out. I think I have a better version already, but I am still not satisfied.
- Foam gets smaller the longer the beer is standing still
<b>Still todo:</b>
- Use a better particle engine for the bubbles.
- Get better colors, especially the B-C does look terrible. (checkout what B-C stands for)
- Add sound (any pointers to examples are appreciated).
- better artistic images.
- User managed drinks.
- Implement "shaking" so foam gets increased.
- Save settings
- User setting for "drink-rate" (saved for next start)
Help needed:
- Pointer to "blending" code examples for drawing the glass
- Texture for foam and/or beer (maybe even brown or red ales ?)
- Other help needed: how can I detect that the PDA is shaken ?
Future enhancements I am thinking about:
- Adding ice-cubes for some drinks (and no ... never for beer :D)
Important:
If you like my applications, consider a donation to Koushik (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=koushik_dutta%40yahoo%2ecom&item_name=Support%20Development%20Projects&no_shipping=0&no_note=1&tax=0¤cy_code=USD&lc=US&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF&charset=UTF%2d8).
After all it is thanks to his (and the many other developers) work and readiness to share it that I can write these programs. I (currently) still get enough satisfaction in writing these programs.

Hey not bad man good work, just need to get the graphics up to the standard of the ibeer app now - also i noticed that when the phone is tilted too much (like upside down) the beer goes back to thinking is flat on a table lol, it should just flow out faster tho.

Hi! Nice but a bit slow. Beer is a bit more liquid. If you like (I'm good in graphic stuff) I can create some images for the beer. What filetype do you need? I think .png for the foam and ma ybe an animated .gif for the beer itself with bubbles raising? What also would be nice if you shake the phone the foam could grow, possible?

Is there a way to make the beer program actually pour real beer out of the light sensor or the front camera so we can have a more lifelike experience and actually get a drink at the same time? bad joke :D
There seems to be good progress happening here- I think all it needs is for a clever graphic designer to join in and give it some lifelike beerness and we'll be there!

Hi there!
I think my post was gettin lost ;-) I'm good in graphic stuff and like to create the needed graphics for the Beer-App. What informations I need is what kind of mimetypes do we need? jpg, png, gif? I think png would be the best for transparency so maybe the thing with the back-camera could work. Also for the foam. How can we support bubbles raising inside the beer? animated gif? or just one transparent bubble image wich is used some kind of particles so they can raise always up using the sensor?

Hi,
Here are the sources for the Diamond Beer application. I would appreciate it if any changes in the sources are reported back, so that I can learn also a bit more.
My background is more Java and (mainframe) servers, so C# and WM is a bit new. The algorithm I use to calculate everything might also not be optimal. I use not a lot of trigonometry but rather simple area calculations.
As some have noticed, I need to put a fix in it when the tilting angle is too high. The "tan()" becomes too big.
Things I currently am looking at (and maybe some of you can help here):
- Use OpenNet.GDIplusCK so I can use the "...Blt" functions and transparency to superimpose the glass on it. I only discovered this recently, but I have used these functions in my "SensorMaze" game (see other post), which is written with C++.
- I have included some artwork for different beers. Even the root beer variant :)
- I am working on a "BubbleEngine", which would take care of adding the bubbles and guide them according to the tilting angle and would react to "shaking" the glass by adding more bubbles. Again, I will need some TransparentBlt here to draw the bubbles.
- I was thinking of adding selectable skins, so that you can make your choice out of the bar. This would people allow to add their own artwork and labels on the glasses.
- I have a rough idea about the foam, but requires some extra thinking. A "FoamEngine" would also need to react to the number of bubbles and increase the foam as soon as the majority of the bubbles reaches the surface. But for now I will probably just add a little wait time after the shaking.
- "drinking" rate should be angle-sensitive. The more the difference between the angle measured, the faster the beer should flow. Again, probably something simple like a factor * cos(x), so that it would vary depending on the angle.
I am open to other suggestions, I guess we can make a good application when different people are combining work.
I also would like to keep this a free, open source application, not sure yet which license to use, but something like the FSF license would apply I guess.
Anyway have fun in developing this.
My idea for the icon is attached in the png file.

Well, that is not the problem. I have created an icon (not in the sources), and set it as default for my form, but the Programs group, just shows an empty default icon as you will notice when you install it.

Awesome job, but it would be nicer if the user could choose between more brands of beer, like HEINEKEN and CORONA!!! also i miss the empty glass picture from your first edition, and when the phone tilts to much that your glass is completly empty but when you tilt it keep a bit its at the level just before it went totally empty. But youre getting there m8!! keep up the good works and i might donate you a real beer:D
P.S. could you make a BACARDI COLA?? instead (or also!) of the rootbeer?! it almost looks the same, with bacardi logo on the glass would be great!!

I think someone posted this earlier, but there definitely is an accelerometer-based beer iphone app. My friend had one today by..carlsberg? You have to play a silly game where you move a pint across a bar, then you get to have the beer. It works very well. The main thing is that the beer flows very quickly, much like a real drink.
We have to, have to put those Iphone mainstream fanboys in their place. I'm so glad you're making a version of this app, and it's coming along really well. If we can just get the beer flowing nicely, any secondary additions like transparency w/ camera or different drinks would just be brilliant insult to injury :D.
Thanks so much!

Hi,
I created a new version (see my original post for the new version) that needs NO .NET CFG at all. Copy the .cab file to your PDA and "double click" on it to install the program. After this you see an entry called "Diamond Beer" in your programs group.

Question, is the only enhancement that the NO .NET CFG is not needed ?
the previous version was also called 'DiamondBeer2Installer.CAB"
Maybe its better to rename the new version or add the date, so then we now that we have the right version, just a thought doh...

Hi,
Here are the sources for the Diamond Beer application.
My idea for the icon is attached in the png file.
hihi... I have installed the Programme in my DIamond, run smoothly... but... how do I use the Extra Resources mentioned above??

Greetings, Lordcoffee
Sorry for the late reply, I am working on several programs at the time. I use png files for the moment, so that would work fine. I don't think however that the Blt functions do support the Alpha channel correctly.
I had the best results by replacing "transparent" parts with the black color and/or grey levels. So fully black is totally transparent, grey would be semi-transparent.
I am also looking into OpenGL, but I must admit I have a steep learning curve there, but I am getting closer.

svenss there is no ibeer app for the iphone, its just a lame trick, its just a pre-recorded video of bear, and what you do is sync the video on your iphone through itunes and then its all about timing, you just have to remember when the bear poures out, you run the video using the iphone and tilt it just at the right time, it does not make use of the g-sensor/accelerometer at all, its just a simple stupid video.
But im sure an app can be developed that can trully utilise the g-sensor but that would be a waste of time for developers as it would only be amusing for a day or two, your better of just downloading the video, convert it to something windows mobile can play.
what a loser.
of course it fricking exists.

Alot of people seemingly forgot that this phone has a multitouch pad vertically under the display. If theres a way to tap it for user apps, it should be simple to have it be the pluck for the strings.
If not for that, why not set it to enter. You use one finger to hold down the proper (excuse my terminology, im no guitar buff) pitch for the string you choose and the enter button plucks only for the one you hold down.

It is not too complicated:
download the .cab file, but DONT extract it. Then, copy it to a convenient location on your PDA.
On your PDA, start File Explorer and navigate to the copied .cab file and double tick it. Thr installation will begin, just follow the instructions onscreen.
If you want to remove it again, go to settings>system>remove programs.
As I said, not too difficult, just remember NOT to extract the cab file!

!!! Update for the binary in a later post !!!
I know it has been a long time since the first version, but I managed to write a new version, which uses OpenGLES and also the new Sensor SDK, so in theory it should work on the Omnia too.
It is a complete rewrite from the previous version, using a faster algorithm and better graphics engine.
It contains only 3 different types of drinks (but that is still 2 more then the iPhone or iPod Touch have :p) and it is completely free.
Some specials:
- Bubbles always go up
- Ice for your GinTonic
- Settings (beer/drink choice) are saved and reused next time
Usage:
- Click on the star in the right bottom corner to exit
- Click on the "keg" in the left bottom corner to change settings (limited)
- Click anywhere on the screen to refill, but ... only after you have finished your drink, don't want to cause unnecessary beer spilling :D
Extra
Sources are available in the .zip file. Not very well documented and it assumes that you have a basic knowledge of OpenGLES.
IMPORTANT: Needs .NET CF 3.5 (or later) !!!!
Have fun.
PS: If there are Omnia users, I am interested in your feedback

First it states that the libgles_cm.dll is missing. I copied the dll to the windows folder. After that I'm able to start the program but I can only see the top bar and nothing else. Soft keys respond actually right, the beer menu opens, even though I can't see the soft keys. I still see my actual background menu. Might be a problem of the OpenGL drawing!?

Maybe it's been mentioned before but maybe u can make a Diamond Smoker app that simulates smoking a cigarette/cigar/hand-rolled. maybe it could go from a frontal perspective to a side view depending on how the phone was moved.

I recently updated the Managed OpenGL ES SDK to support software software rendering as well (such as on the Omnia, which does not work with this current release). You'll need to redownload the SDK and also include libgles_cm.dll (Vincent3D implementation, included in the SDK) in your CAB file.

The first one is probably easy to fix. I realize I got some extra checking to do on the angle.
Icecube physics are not perfect, I agree, but if somebody can help me in improving it I would appreciate it. (See sources)
Indeed, I check if the bubbles do not go beyond the liquid level, but realize now that I forgot to stop them when the drink is "empty".
I am looking into the wave thing, but have a hard time finding an algorithm I could use to do it. I will try to adapt one of the "waving flags" examples at NeHe, but I am still pretty new to OpenGL.

i hope this isnt mentioned already, but i dont have time to read all post just now..
but aside the glitches mentioned already, i find one more thing that could be done to get it more realistic. maybe incorperating the wave physics sort this out but most striking is the way the fluid reacts to motion...
the gsensor gives a lot of "noise" or little misreading wich result in a bit of jittery fluid.. is you were able to dampen the reaction of the fluid a bit it would look a bit more realistic.
imagine holding a glas. when you move it sideways the fluid tend to stream to one side of the glass deu to inertia of the fluid... this takes a bit of time.. thats what i mean..
but whenever the fluid physics could be implemented this reaction would come with it... physics eaquals inertia and mass.... so... keep up the good work...

I downloaded the new OpenGL ES sdk and will try to get it working with the emulator. I guess that this will also improve the chance that it worsk for the Omnia. Of course I never even saw an Omnia, so it is kind of hard to try it out. Maybe I should start asking for donations too to save for an Omnia ;)
Give me some time and I will get a new version.
I just helped someone out the other day to get it working on the Omnia. It was pretty much just a recompile (and copying of the Vincent3D libgles_cm.dll).

Exactly, with the new compiled DLL I was able so start it on the Omnia.
But sadly the performance isn't that great. It's actually lagging, the framerate seems to be around 15-20 fps, maybe even less, I guess.
Is there any way you could improve performance on this? I have about no knowledge about OpenGL, so I can not have a look myself.
The test application of koush runs quite smooth on my Omnia (the rotating triangle), so it should be doable for the beer app?! Since the beer is not even a 3-dimensional object, there is no Z-coordinate that needs to be computed.
That's how I think it works, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Here is a new version, which tackles the bugs mentioned earlier. New features are in the configuration screen.
Icecube behavior is better, but still simplistic when the drink is empty.
Should also work for the Omnia, but you still might need to copy the libgles_cm.dll file.

And i tried the DiamondBeer2_Installer v0_1 and it works, BUT the screen flickers a lot.
Is my D3D driver to slow? or not up to date?
Further more the screenresolution is i think not optimized for the OMNIA I900?
Can someone repair those for me?

Great app! Well done - you're very good at this!!
The 1st version worked (after fiddling a bit) on the Omnia - just quite flickery images.
All other updates since I've not managed to get working yet. I've got CF3.5, the HTCEmu files are in my \windows folder and so is the libGLES_CM.dll file.
When launching for the 1st time - the phone asks if it is ok to use libGLES - I said yes, but it then stops with the error:
"Can't find PInvoke DLL 'libgles_cm.dll'"
Maybe I don't have an up-to-date libgles file - can anyone upload a new one from their phone?.
Keep up the good work!!

I would really like to try this app on my phone (HTC Touch Diamond), but I do not know how to get it on there. Is anyone interested in telling me how to do it please? Thanks in advance! :)
