View Full Version : Windows Media Player Resume-Plugin (Version 1.2.1 09/25/08)

Wolfman-XP
30th July 2008, 03:00 PM
Hello,
for everyone who is interested in: i have developed a resume-plugin for the windows media player. Just install the .cab and everytime you press pause on the MediaPlayer it will save the playlist and the position. Afte you exit the player or the device resets it will resume at the same position.
Perhaps someone find it useful in combination with audio-books.
Have fun,
greets,
Thomas

P.S: The plugin is for the MOBILE Windows Media Player, that means it is for devices with the Windows Mobile OS! (For those who come direct from google to this PDA-Forum..:-)

UPDATE 1.1:
-now it is not necessary (written correct..? :-) to press "pause". Every 20 sec a resume list is written.

UPDATE 1.2:
-New Config-Tool for setting the Save-Interval and an option for asking to resume on startup.
-The save-interval is the time for automatic save in Milliseconds
-please de-install the previous version before installing the new!

UPDATE 1.2.1:
-the PopUp for resuming is bound to the mediaplayer so you can use the library startoption.
You have to close the library to see the PopUp.
Have Fun!

Hi,

your cab installs the "ResumePlugin2.dll" on "\Program Files\ResumePlugin", without reg entries or Links.

how will this work?

It is a self-register com-component. On install the installer calls the self-register function of the .dll, it registers itsself as WMP Plugin and makes the reg-entries in \hklm\software\microsoft\mediaplayer\uiplugins. After that, the plugin works.

thank you. this is working great for me as well. it is standard on every other media player except wm...
side note: s2p has this standard and seems to use less resources then wm.

thanks again for this very handy hack. I will pass this along as well.

Another thing that Windows have forgotten !
Thanks for making WMP better ! ;)

PS : It was one of the reasons that make me install S2P... I was obliged to select again and again the playlist...

I'm not getting any love from this.

It did it once, but I can't repeat it.

also, has anyone tested it with the HTC Home music tab?

Ive tried launching direct from wmp shortcut also...

Can you make a configurable auto-bookmark? Every X seconds, bookmark the file. Don't need to keep history of all the autobookmarks, that would obviously grow and grow.

That way we would at least have a auto-bookmark in case we forget to hit pause or WMP crashes.

One thing I noticed is that if I have shuffle turned on, when I reopen WMP, it will start playing another song in the list instead of picking up where it left off.

Great WMP is the mosed used app for me.

And now i can skip the Library and just get going.

It's only when you lose these sort of small extra's when you realize how important they are.

So before this get's lost.

I haven't installed this yet but am so excited I wanted to thank you immediately for developing this and making it available for free to the masses.

I use my HTC Wizard to listen to podcasts, lectures, and audio books but this has driven me crazy for 2yrs. Now, thanks to your efforts it sounds like it will be solved.

This has nothing to with the plugin. I tested it with and without the plugin, it is the memory management of the Media player. Depending on the size of the mp3 it is playing, it uses a certain percentage of the free memory as buffer!

After installing the plugin (HTC S710 WM 6.0 NEO) , WMP works ok for about an hour then either locks up my phone, or starts skipping through the tracks without playing anything.

After a re-boot it worked again for a while and then crashes.

I un-installed the plugin and now WMP plays everything again without crashing.

I was having memory issues as well. After about 10 minutes it started shutting doen background apps.

Often it would popup the "memory critically low" white window and start forcing me to shut down apps. It did so when only WMP and Phone were running.

Uninstalled the plugin and all was well again.

I tested it, and with or without the plugin the media player consumes as much memory as it can get, depending on the size of the mp3 to play.
So i donīt think that there is a bug in the plugin.
Perhaps it is an issue of a cooked rom? I use the Toshiba G900 with the "normal" rom. Iīve written the plugin using my "old" Universal with a WM6.0 Darkforce rom and there were no probīs too.

Moreover is the name of the installed program "Standardfirmenname Cabmaker", in case I need to uninstall it ?

Is this the feature - after I exit and resume WMP, it will go straight to the begining of the show (bypassing Library) and start the show all over again UNTIL I press pause, then it will jump to where I last stop?

How do I uninstall / disable this after enable it?

No, normaly after starting the WMP it will jump to the point where you have pressed "pause" the last time. Perhaps the plugin works different with different Media Player Versions? Does any other have this behavior?
To uninstalll read the post before.

This plugin appears to cause problems if you also have Conduit's Pocket Player installed with the "Conduits WM Adapter" plugin enabled (to enable playback control through A2DP Bluetooth, for example). After installing ResumePlugin1.1.CAB, an exception error occurs every time Pocket Player is opened.

Disabling "Load WMP Plugins" (under Menu > More... > Options... > Plugins tab > Conduits WM Adapter 2.21) prevents the exception, but also means you lose the functionality of other WMP plugins like the Bluetooth control.

Disabling the "ResumePlugin Plugin" individually does not prevent the exception.

Another ISSUE :
During playing files from diffrent locations via file explorer a playlist get generated in that folder.

for ex.

i hv played some ringtones form My ringtone folder and a playlist comes.
than i hv played form storage card/songs again a playlist. & so on
when i open media player also a playlist comes on root directory.

it should be fixed that the plugin generate playlist at a particular location. and it should be user define if possible via regisiry.

Ok, then there is the question: if you are using the PocketPlayer, why using the WindowsMedia player with the plugin?
The Plugin-Interface of the PocketPlayer seems not to work for all plugins. Coreplayer on the other hand has no problems with it.

I use HTC touch diamond.
Tried it with WMP, but not work for files with non-Ascii titles.

Finally, even make the WMP can't open again.
No choice but to remove it from the PPC.

Because no one media player is perfect for everything. I still use WMP for listening to podcasts and Pocket Player for my music library.

This works perfectly! I read audiobooks a lot and this is what I've been looking for this for a long time. Thank you!!

I have a few other questions:
1. is there a plugin which can increase playback speed?
2. on my diamond, the touchflow music player intercepts the avrcp commands before it gets to wmp. Is there a to delete/disable the touchflow music player
3. alternatively, can you make a similar resume plug-in for the touchflow music player?
4. can the prev/next track be redefined as rewind/fast forward?

This is great, Thanks!!!

Here is another valuable functionality missing in all players:
I am listening for long podcast interrupted by commercials, I Fast Forward through commercials and would like to be able to hear while fast forwarding in order to distinguish when commercial ends and podcast continues.

Even if this Audible Fast forward jumpy or distorted, I would still be able to recognise the end of the commercial because of the difference in tone, style, background music... My old MP3 player "Sandisk Cruzer MP3 Companion" does that.

And here is yet another feature serving the same purpose - jump forward with pre-defined time. Pre-devined time should be user programmable. Jump backwards would be nice too, with separately programmable time, so if you jumped forward by 15 seconds and overshot, jump backwards can be programmed for 5 seconds, and bring you closer to the right place.

If there is a player with such features, I would love to have it.

Thanks.

Hello

i am trying v1.1 & its a great application ... very useful

but i noticed the following:

- clicking noise / chopping sound on regular intervals (i think it happens every 20 sec as the application saves the position)

- I know that when you use WM player you loose about 4 - 5 MB but now i gradually loose more & more if i play very long audio files... then the device become very slow or not even responsive ( i checked & was down to 1 MB free RAM only)

so ...can you please add an option to save position ONLY when clicking pause ...or make it happen every 20, 30 sec, 1, 2 min (choose by user from a config menu or a registry hack?)

if not ..can you post the v1.0 again at 1st post for people who like to press pause & avoid the click noise

again...thanks for the very useful application

EDIT:

i found the older v1.0 after a long search & i will attach it in case someone else is facing the same problems i had with 1.1
remember...with v 1.0 you must press pause to mark where the WM player will start later or it will not work
so far no clicks & no slowing down :) with v1.0

i hope we can get something from Wolfman-XP to custmize v1.1 & have an option to adjust the save interval time or choose between (manual only with pause / auto time interval saving mode "maybe adjustable too 20, 40 sec, 1, 5 min")...thanks

I have one feature request.
Love it, dont get mewrong, but the ability to request resume play would be little more user friendly.

Hello Wolfman-XP

thanks alot for the very fast & excellent update to v1.2

i like the configuration menu very much...& i tried it for few minute & seems that the clicking was gone (even if i set it to auto save every 20 sec ,,,its better....thanks)

the only thing i noticed, if you choose to have a "resume notification" ON, then when i open WMP the little notification window pops up then immediatly after that the library screen comes on & even if i close the library screen i get the WMP button main screen screen...so i have to close both windows to actually see the notification screen & choose to resume ...in other words it runs in the back behind both screens

is there a way to bring it to the front so its right there when you are trying to resume playback?

do not get me wrong..i am just trying to perfect this already great application...I LOVE IT

for now i unchecked the notification option & i do not use it anyway..just trying to help & i am very happy with v 1.2

Thanks again

I tried using version 1.2.1 and it caused the playback to skip and repeatedly crashed WMP. I like the resume prompt but until it is more stable I have gone back to 1.1. Thanks.

I installed 1.2.1 on the Samsung Epix and configured it to save a checkpoint every 15 seconds. Later I tried to stream Sirius radio using SiriusWM5 to launch a stream in WM. Though it doesn't make sense to save a checkpoint for streaming, apparently there is still an interaction and it broke WM. I could hear the stream start and then WMP crashed.

I tried to uninstall and it would hang with a wait icon and required a reboot. Repeated 3 times. Finally Iused the Resume configuration tool to tell it to not save checkpoints and then I could uninstall.

I've used the 1.2.1 plugin on a HTC Touch Cruise until yesterday, when I receive my new phone HTC Touch HD.
Great plugin! It worked without any problem on the Touch Cruise (WMP 10.3 18129).
But on the new Touch HD (WMP 10.3 20757) is now working.
When I close the WMP, an error appear. When I start it again, the player is showing the first song in the playlist and not the one where I stopped playing.

Can it be fixed please?

Best regards, Stefan

I guess I am really doing something wrong. Everyone writes that this plugin works great. I can not make it work!

I have a Dell X50 running 2003SE. I have download the 1.2.1 cab and installed in on my pda. On the start menu I started the program and checked the "ask for resume", the interval I left at 0 and save.

When I open the media player and pause a song, no pop up is visible. I have even gone all the way back to the Today screen, with WMP still running.

When I close WMP and then reopen the program there is no song to restart in the player.

What am I doing wrong. I use GSPocket Magic to close the running programs, but even if I disable that program, I cannot make this plugin work.

What am I doing wrong. I really want to make it work correctly. Thanks for the help.

I am having difficulty running the .cab file. It was associated with winrar and winzip. After I removed those associations all it does is open the file in explorer displaying the internal filenames. How can I run it so it installs the plugin?

Update. After scouring the web to find an answer, I see now that the reason is that this is PPC software. Why didn't you say so on the first page? Coming upon it from Google and not seeing any mention of that fact only makes for confusion, frustration, and loss of time.

For those in the same situation, there is MyMediaBookmarks for desktop PCs:

http://www.catenalogic.com/products/mymediabookmarks/

It does the same thing. It works well. Saves last position for multiple files. Why isn't this standard for all players?

I think i didn't really understand what the plugin is done for... could it be used to read a video file, and for example in the middle i press pause, then shut down WMP... and when i come back i don't want to have to use the cursor to go to the middle of the file.. is it done for that ? or just for music and playlists ?

Is this the feature - after I exit and resume WMP, it will go straight to the begining of the show (bypassing Library) and start the show all over again UNTIL I press pause, then it will jump to where I last stop?

How do I uninstall / disable this after enable it?

Hey Wolfman. This is a great app. I was looking for something like this for video. Came from using TCPMP but on my new HTC Touch Pro I can't play VGA video without some choppiness so switched to WMC (which is a whole other issue, but I digress...). Anyhow, thanks!

Just wanted to say, I have the exact issue on my Touch Pro as above. No complaints, just wanted to let you know in case it can be looked at in a future release. Mine prompts me to resume (after setting it to so) but then starts back at the beginning of my video. Then I press pause and it finds the resume spot and all is well. But at least it prompts, so I know to do this if I want to resume. It's easily lived with. Would it have anything to do with being video, as opposed to audio? Or just a glitch with my particular version? I am using a standard HTC ROM and the default WMP with no skins.

Thanks again!

Sorry for the dumb question but I extracted the contents of the cab file and tried to click the xml file and all i saw was just some code in my browser. Right clicking the same file did not help either. What I'm supposed to do

Can you tell me what numbers to put in the "Save Interval" if I want to save every minute (60 seconds)? I thought I read somewhere that this is milliseconds. That would be 60000, right? What happens if I don't put anything in the "Save Interval" (not zero to disable, just nothing in the box)? Is that what I should do (put nothing there) if I only want to save whenever I hit Pause and not automatically?

This plugin is a great idea but I think it has problems with large playlists. Recently I upgraded the ROM on my Tytn II to the Ultimate PDA with Manila 2d interface. I really liked it but it seemed to have issues with Windows Media Player freezing. I had not had this problem on other ROMS. My listening practice is to press play on All Songs in the library so that I can listen to my entire music collection and I have shuffle on so it is in random order. After upgrading to this new ROM I found that pressing pause would make WMP lock up for a while and it took ages to display the play button again. If I then closed WMP and try to relaunch, I would get the wait icon and WMP would never load and it took up more and more of my processor and RAM eventually causing the phone to need soft reset. I did a bit of experimenting and eventually found that ROM chef had included your plugin. He had it configured with the timed save disabled and the prompt disabled. I found that when I went into the registry and disabled the plugin, WMP worked perfectly again. The problem also didn't occur when playing a single album say although it did take longer than usual to launch WMP.
I have about 10gb of music on my phone (roughly 200 albums with 2000 tracks) so I was wondering if maybe you should put a timeout or something to prevent this behaviour with large playlists.

Cheers,

Ashley

I have the same exact problems with a Titan runing nu2chem SPL and Kithchen Rom with the plugin selected. I have a 16g storage card with 12g of music. I have tried installing v1.1 and then uninstalling and reinstalling with SoftReset between each step. I tried Uninstalling 1.1 and installing v 1.2.1 and had the same result. Does anyone have any idea? I would love for this to work!

Update I have found that if I only select an album to play the Plugin will call the last song and WMP runs much faster. However once the recalled song is playing the forward button is greyed out and you can not go to the previous track.

Where does the plugin store the saved information? Is it editable? I have a 12 hour audiobook that is DRM protected. For some reason the plugin lost my place and I can't simply drag the bar to 10 hours. It seems like it is random and wants to be somewhere between zero and 2 hours. Fast forward is really slow. Is there a way to edit the bookmark file directly so I can have it jump to the right place on next load?

Thanks-
Jason

I too was having an issue with the plugin not saving my place on audio books with mulitple parts. It would always jump to the beginning of last part of the book.

The kludge that I found was to open the file resume.asx file located in the root directory.

To make it easier to open, I created a shortcut to the resume.asx and put it in windows\start menu\programs, using TotalCommander. Then if you go to Settings -> Menu, you can add the shortcut to the start menu.

Hope this helps.

I have an Xperia 1
Tried the program but it didn't work out
WMP would play just one song and then freeze, or close itself; and when I enter the WMP again it would be on the "now playing" screen and of course, with no traces of the playlist I was playing. Besides the phone got excedingly slow. Once I uninstalled the program the phone came back to normal once again.

I am using V1.1 on my Touch HD and it is working fine. Great with bluetooth as I no longer have to load a playlist manually when I launch WMP with my bluetooth. Just hit the BT play button and WMP launches and begins to play the last track that was played before shutdown :D

I have a problem with this plugin (ist not version dependent). The playlist will be created in the root of the device. But in the resume.asx there is a wrong path. Only the path to the actual played title is correct. In all other files of the list, there is another direcory „Playlists“. This directory does not exist. I have put a playlist here resume.asx (http://www.pfohlnet.de/resume.asx) because i cant attach the files here in the forum. Maybe some can give me a hint to solve the problem.

btw: in the config programm is a time setting. Is this in milliseconds or seconds?

A very usefull add-on. But what is missing (in my view) is a bookmark option. By that I mean a option that makes a list of all the resume points from the various music played. So you can go back to any point. This would be very usefull if you read an audibook stop it then playmusic and stop that and want to go back to your audio book.
Maybe to much to ask for?
many regards,
fred

It looks like this plug-in has one bug.
It doesn't work with unicode.
I cannot use it in russian version of WM.
If path contains russian characters plug-in creates unusable playlist and WMP cannot start.
Is it possible to support unicode?

WM6.1 russian
plugin 1.2.1

Opening WMP, it's empty, open Menu - Library - My playlists - playlist.asx - choose any mp3 - it's playing. in 2 minutes i close WMP with Xbutton on the top-right.
Opening WMP - it;s again empty :( I have to make all steps to get it playing mp3s.

what am I doing wrong??

Great utility! However I found it doesn't support unicode file name. For files save in completed English path name, it worked perfectly. But if I open any file in unicode path (has Chinese character in this case), it doesn't work.

Hope you next version support unicode. Keep up the great work!!

Fretjes, have a look at abPlayer (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/audio-video/abcPlayer.aspx)
I would have liked to stick with WMP but abPlayer allows you to have mutiple bookmarks, for mutiple books.
It was written for wm5, but it will run on wm6 and the developer has the source code posted so you can make any changes you want (if your up to the challange). There are a few text sizing issues with it but it's a great program overall.

It also works well on any smartphone with WM6 (e.g. on a Tornado with cooked ROM). However the configuration tool does not work there (it crashes because the GUI parts of the WM professional are not accessible on the smartphone). You can however easily set the options yourself. Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\wolf\Tools\ResumePlugi n
and set the DWord values:
ask (may be 0 or 1)
SaveInterval (in seconds, 0 to disable)
to the relevant values.

Only when I remove the add-on, WMP can be restarted. Re-installing again does the trick, but it goes back to the error once I the have to re-launch WMP.

Anyone know of a remedy?

On my Imagio with energy ROM, it seems to work. But it will reset volume to 100% every time I quit WMP. Also, when I start WMP it will play the movie from 0 second. I have to pause, then it will resum to the position last time I quit the app.
