View Full Version : Battery life: Shutting off Google Talk, Jivetalk makes all the difference!

I use the Mugen 3600mAh battery. It drains at about 4 to 6.5 percent per hour. I couldn't figure out how everyone else with a superbattery is enjoying drain rates of 2 percent an hour.

Well, this morning, I decided NOT to start my two "always on" apps: gmail (originally--and mistakenly: Google Talk) (in GC14's Java) and Beejive's JiveTalk, a multiprotocol IM.

What a difference! 3.3 hours later, my battery is down just 4 percent.

Is there a program that can tell me how much each program is contributing to my battery's drain?

this will be pretty much true for any IM client, as they keep a data connection all the time

Might I suggest just using one program, as you're sorta using three there: GTalk, the Java manager and Jivetalk?

I'm not running any IM client on my phone currently as I got sick of people harassing me while I was driving, but I had good luck with Palringo; it takes care of most protocols including GTalk.

Hopefully someday there'll be a digsby mobile client.

You could download a program called "Slick"

It's free, you can run it in the background if you like, and its a standalone program without the need of java.

It also works great.

There is no Google Talk client for Windows Mobile. Jivetalk is my only IM program, and I use it to IM with contacts on Yahoo IM and my Google Talk accounts.

Jivetalk doesn't use Java; Java is needed for my mail (gmail for Windows Mobile).

Sometimes I turn on Skype 2.2 but that seems to drain my battery faster than any app except CorePlayer.

I looked at Slick but decided against it because it doesn't show me my contacts' avatars.

JiveTalk doesn't use Java.

"Google Talk (in GC14's Java)"

I suppose I was misunderstanding this phrase as it seems to indicate that you were using Java for Google Talk? In GC's package he has Google Mail..but I haven't seen Google Talk anywhere.

Fair enough about the avatars, I suppose I'm more interested in function over form...but to each his own!

Good luck!

Mea culpa: I meant to write gmail in Java! I'm about to correct it... Sorry!
