View Full Version : Excalibur in 96 DPI: Finally A Semi-Working Solution (Testing Purposes Only)

Hello Guys,
Finally, we have an almost working solution. A member has posted a .cab that changes your DPI from 131 to 96 DPI.
It works ! I have personally tested it myself. However, it still needs work done.
This looks great but it still needs some minor work done. If I do come across any solutions, I will keep you guys posted. If you guys come across anything, please post here so we can figure this one out.
Setup Instructions:
1) Run the WM6.1-131to96dpi.CAB file
2) when it asks for you to restart, do not restart.
3) Click Start, Accessories and run Command Processor, and click the "..." button.
4) Go to Menu, Browse Folder, and select the folder where you put the dpi.ccs file.
5) Now you will see the dpi file, and then go ahead and run it.
6) Wait for it go back to the homescreen and then reboot your phone.
Uninstall Instructions:
1) Start > Settings > Remove Programs
2) Select .CAB (131 to 96 dpi)
3) Click Remove Program
---------
Issues:
1) Programs in storage card - do not run OR files are missing
2) Rinku's Iconbar is slightly cut off from the bottom
3) Smart tool kits "start" button is misaligned
4) Wallpaper is slightly cut off from the bottom
5) NRG Miniweather - Date & Day are not properly aligned either
6) Pocket Nester Plus not working (maybe due to ROMs stored on storage card)
ATTENTION: PROGRAMS ON SD CARD ARE NOT WORKING, NOR ARE MY IMAGES FOR MYFAVES SHOWING UP. HOWEVER, STORAGE CARD SEEMS TO WORK.I UNINSTALLED IT AND EVERYTHING WORKS FINE.
I am posting screenshots for you guys and I have attached the .zip (which includes .cab and dpi.ccs) for you to download. The experts out there, use this as foundation and see if you can fix it for our phones.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DISCLAIMER: USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. FOR NOW, THIS IS STRICTLY FOR TESTING PURPOSES ONLY. I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR DEVICE OR ERASE THE CONTENTS OF YOUR DEVICE.
Credit goes to falleny for posting this .cab and pudgedaddy for instructions on how to fix dpi.ccs - Great Job!

One thing i have a question with is how does this behave when using PIE or Opera Mobile or Opera Mini? or other applications such as games ?
Secondly, now un-installable is this app? If it's not something i want to use at this point, am i at the point of no return without hard-reset?
i can sure this is safe and uninstallable...have a try, if u don't like it...just uninstall it...from your setting menu

aiight it works fine...if u have LCD installed and use medium or larger format in Opera it won't look right. and yea...other than that...seems to be working fine...another note.
dpi.css.zip has to be renamed to dpi.css and then in CeleCMD you have to make it so it can see all files then u can run dpi.css...at least that is what i did. and all works fine.
edit: Or that.

What's the purpose of lowering the dpi?
lukybandit
5th August 2008, 12:52 AM
Please Check Post 1
I have fixed the dpi file by renaming dpi.css to dpi.ccs as well as unzipped it into the ZIP folder in first post. Thank you pudge for the instructions
Now you can follow the instructions and it should work as shown but there are still some minor issues except one being major that is SD programs are not working. I don't know how to fix this. If anyone comes across any fixes, please post here.

Thank you, and thanks to everyone that worked on this. I have been waiting for this for a while.
I was going to install it earlier today but i was getting a corrupt message from the dpi.css; Im glad you updated it very quickly.
If anyone is running Rickywatts vanilla ROM, you can find the command processor in "My Tools". Just a heads up.

First of all, thanks to all the developers and researchers responsible for making this happen.
Second, I'm getting the following error when I try to Install the cab (I open the cab, the progress bar goes all the way 'till its end the this is displayed):
"Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient system permissions".
Is anybody else getting the same error and/or knows what should I do to get past it? I really want to try this...
BTW, my excalibur is app unlocked already (surreal networks app used).
Thanks in advance.
Cheers.

Im running WM6.1 and the small text is somewhat hard to read.

Sorry guys if this is a repitive question, but what is the purpose of lowering the dpi? I have read post one Lukybandit, but it doesn't say what the benefit is.
Would someone mind posting a few reasons why this mod is desired?
Thanks.

Although i personally wouldn't recommend installing this at the moment ( issues with the storage card and alignment issues)
basically this works similarly to increasing your screen resolution on your PC.(minus the actual resolution changing) meaning it fits more stuff on your devices display since it shrinks down what is placed on your screen.

Hey,
Sorry, that post wasn't directed at you.
The only benefit I can see from this is what pudgedaddy said. By lowering the dpi, you are able to fit more things onto the screen and i guess it looks cleaner. Like that of a pc. I hope that answers your question.

Hi!
I'm willing to test it, but i canīt get around the problem i posted before:
"I'm getting the following error when I try to Install the cab (I open the cab, the progress bar goes all the way 'till its end the this is displayed):
"Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient system permissions".
I've already checked my phone's registry for any lock on the policies, but it's effectively unlocked, and other cabs/apps signed and unsigned install without any problem... BTW, I'm using Ricky's wm6.1 v23 ROM...
Can someone give me some help on this? I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks in advance and cheers.

i think the storage card issues may have something to do with either the shellres.dll or the browsres.dll files that are included in the .cab
edit: i can extract all the files from the .cab and just create a .cab with the registry changes and then put the files into a separate .zip file so you can extract and place them one by one in the \windows directory then reboot so se can see what the cplprit is.... the dpi.ccs file seems to be pretty tame on its own, so i dont think thats the issue. It runs more like a .mscr file would.
the .ccs file command instructions look like this:
WAIT 1800
WAIT 1800
WAIT 7000
KILL appman
REGX HKLM\System\GWE\Display\#LogicalPixelsY=109
REGX HKLM\System\GWE\Display\#LogicalPixelsX=109
WAIT 1800
EXEC !appman.exe, -s BootApps :MSStart tpcutil.dll AMStart
WAIT 1800
EXEC !\windows\home.exe
WAIT 3000
REGX HKLM\System\GWE\Display\#LogicalPixelsY=96
REGX HKLM\System\GWE\Display\#LogicalPixelsX=96
BEEP
So basically it doesn't appear to refernce any of the .dll's that are included in the .cab ... so it's gotta be one of the ****res.dll files in the .cab
UPDATE: I looked for what dependencies the dll's have and i found a thread where someone modified the shellres.dll and couldnt access his storage card... look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=289772
UPDATE 2: I also found a forum where someone was having issues with videos/pictures and it was regarding the browsres.dll file look here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=4566
UPDATE 3: the PlumSIP5.dll file apparently goes with a program called "sika" and it appears to have absolutely nothing to do with 96dpi heres more info about it: http://www.51spsoft.com/DownInfoEn/info25463.html and this link talks about the .dll file : http://www.51spsoft.com/DownInfoEn/info25244.html

It's actually celecommand.. Look for it in Kavana or Ricky's ROM. I personally don't use it because both Kavana's and Ricky's ROM are centered around using it, while I prefer "cooking" my ROM the Microsoft way :) With good ol' .provxml .rgu and initflashfiles.dat files :)

Doesn't seem to work correctly on the Rose ported ROMs. Comm Manager is all mangled up, basically unusable. NRG Mini Weather menus don't display at all. The top bar icons are just white blocks. However, using the Media Top Bar icons works, they are just slightly cut off on the bottom. Other than that, seems to work. Can anyone come up with a fix to make it work on the NRG or Ricky's Rose ROM?

So, been messing with DLL's, I think I may be able to get this working on the Rose ROM. I need some files out of the \Windows folder in the Rose ROM like tshres.dll, tapres.dll, and shellres.dll to tweak with the 96 dpi package. How can I copy files out of ROM in the \Windows directory? I tried Activesync and RescoExplorer and it keeps saying denied.
Also, I assume I will need to unsign the files before I make changes, then re-sign them, correct?

Ok all. So IT WORKS!! I've been disassembling and reassembling this cab file for days now. I finally got it pretty stable. I removed some files that are not needed and added the appropriate files to work on the Excalibur. I tweaked shellres.dll so the Storage Card issue seems to be gone! :p I also tweaked and reinserted the appropriate files for 320xX instead of 240xX. I replaced the thin looking top bar icons in the original tshres.dll to the 96dpi icons. MUCH BETTER! I had to disable ClockOnTop due to the smaller fonts because it wasn't displaying properly. You can do this using a regedit program under HKLM\Init\LaunchXX. Scroll down and just delete the "ClockOnTop" entry. I will edit and fix it in the next release. The program seems to uninstall just fine as well if you're worried about that.
Please note that this still does not work on the new Rose based ROMS. I think the Rose ROM is looking for a specific digital signature on the DLLs for them to run right. Still working on it.
NOTE: PLEASE TEST AT YOUR OWN RISK. ALL PHONES AND ROMS ARE DIFFERENT AND UNKNOWN CONDITIONS MAY OCCUR (you may lose data). Thanks to lukybandit for the original post and enyone else who contributed.
Please test it out and let me know! :)
Directions:
- Unzip and run dpi.ccs first (You will need CeleCmd)
- It will seem like it's not doing anything (wait for it to return to the homescreen and beep)
- Run OOK_96DPI_WM61_v1.2b.cab
- Reboot when it asks
Screenshots below
UPDATE: 12/29/2008, 10:00PM PST, fixed JOGGR icons, still bug testing. So far the only problem is not able to access the Date and Time settings in Clock and Alarms. Will be fixed by next release. I gave up on ClockOnTop for now and am using the SmartToolKit top clock instead.
UPDATE: 12/30/2008, 11:06AM PST, 1.2b fixed Comm Manager icons (for Kavana ROM), still bug testing. Date and Time issue not 96 DPI related, must be another app installed on my phone.
UPDATE: 12/30/2008, 11:58PM PST, 1.3b tested Date and Time issue again and not present! Adjusted SMS message icon to show mini phone inside the icon. All stable and works very well!
So far works great on Kavana's WM6.1 ROM remade by Ricky. Please test and let me know!
good work!

Wallpaper issues fixed now in 1.5b and 1.51b. If you have a custom CPR file in \Windows, back it up, install 96dpi, edit the CPR and modify the first line- <Image ID="Background" Opacity="1.0" Top="-17" Width="320" Height="213"/>, then copy it back to \Windows. Otherwise, the installer will just install the factory version. Let me know.

Excellent work guys!
Testing 1.5b for ROSE ONLY works on NRG's Rose ROM. in NRGZ82's 'Rose' v1.4. Reporting issues:
- Comm manager not showing properly
- Some images in IE are not showing correctly
- MSN Messenger app not running
- Windows Live extremely slow and error in display
- Enter in PocketSNES but nothing happens when you try to load a ROM. (App and ROMs in SD)
*When wifi ON and reboot:
- CHome Settings lost.
- File explorer sometimes freezes when 'Menu' is pressed.
- CommMng doesn't start (keeps thinking)
- Cele Task freezes. Also not killing CommMng process.
-(tried setting HKLM\Comm\TNETWLN1\Parms\ HTCResumeWiFiAfterReset=1 to 0 but didn't work neither)
UPDATE:
- Installed WindowsLive10.6.0034.0800(Fixed).cab and it worked!
- Uninstalled the 96dpi app, set the CommMng to WM default view (HKLM\Software\HTC\CommManager\DisableButtonText=0 ) and reinstalled 96dpi app. Now the view still ugly but much better.
- IE displays correctly now. (after reinstalling 96dpi app)
- DON'T REBOOT IF WIFI IS ON. (it will make file explorer, celetask and comm mng crash). Solution: Uninstall 96dpi app with Settings -> Remove Programs.

Thanks ookba! 1.52b seems to be working great so far. If I run into any issues I'll post an update.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you give me a link to that WIndows Live cab? I will try to append the needed files into my 96dpi installer to correct the problem. Im also trying to port over the Comm Manager view from Kavana's ROM to Rose. It displays well. Check it out.
The other issues with Comm Manager thinking forever is a Rose ROM bug. I have run into this many times even without the 96dpi mods. Hopefully these will get ironed out as newer Rose ROMS get released.

Thanks. What was the actual problem with Windows live? I wonder which file in this CAB fixed it?

When the 96dpi is installed the MSN doesn't run at all. installing the .cab i posted fixes it but don't know how.
If you look the processes running after the installer boots the device you'll see the WifiInit.exe is there but the CeleTask does not kill it. When the 96dpi app is not installed this doesn't happen. I think this is why the Folder Explorer jams too.
All goes to normal when the 96dpi app is uninstalled and the phone reboots..

I've never had the WifiInit.exe problem on Kavana's or Rose ROM's. What does it do? As for Windows Live/MSN, the fix on Rose for now is to simply reinstall it with the cab that jgrv posted on this page. The Opera mini issue will take some time. Has anyone tried just reinstalling it as well? No updates as of now but if I make any breakthroughs, I will definately let you guys know.

Well like you said to me ookba.. maybe the WifiInit.exe problem is Rose's ROM problem..
I've installed new Kavana's Rom now (it has MSN updated version).. then installed your '96dpi app for Kavana' but there were some errors in the display.. I uninstalled it..
Just for curiosity installed de '96dpi Rose Only' and it worked better haha.. but the msn didn't worked (although it has new Msn already installed).. so I unisntalled it again.. Haven't try it with opera.
Just for you to know...
I recomend the new Kavana's Rom.. is faster and has more storage/memory space.

Should be fixed now in 1.54. Uploaded. Haven't had a chance to mess with Opera mini yet. I did find, however, that even at 131dpi, the fonts suck.

It should. Can you provide a ROM download link so I can test it?
Tested. Since Kavana's 090123 ROM is based on the ROSE SYS, install the ROSE version of the 96dpi CAB.

Good find! I will update tonight.
I guess what Opera does is loads the first font it finds in the Windows directory and uses it for Opera. So by having it named _Tahoma.ttf, its at the top of the list.
Uploading new files for both regular WM61 and ROSE WM61 soon. Opera fixed and some other fonts cleaned up!!
