Googlemail and Vodafone - Problems

Hello,
I am new to this forum and not much of a technology wizz....
I am trying to set up my googlemail account on my diamond, I tried the settings that are automatically installed (just by entering username and password) and then I also tried the settings manually that the google website gave.
My provider is Vodafone Germany and the diamond is branded.
SoI went to my Vodafone shop where they were very helpful in trying to set the account up for me AGAIN!!!

Well, it is NOT working!!!!

I keep getting an error message saying that the mail cannot be downloaded to my device and that I need to re-check my settings...????

Can anyone help me,....very slowly - Please?!

Have you enabled POP\IMAP forwarding on your account? You need to do this on a computer. Log in, click Settings, Forwarding and POP\IMAP, the enable option is at the bottom of this page...

Yes, I have done that. I have followed All the instructions given by googlemail!
