Because Microsoft stopped distributing their expenses tool and I don't like the alternatives I have seen, I have programmed a little thing myself.

You can modify the values shown in the lists in order to fit your wishes. Option to export to tab-separated text file for importing in Excel or other program.

Command line options:
-f filename Starts the program with the specified database. -d foldername Sets the folder for the defaults- and logfile. The defaults file contains the settings for currencies, categories and more. -qe Quick Edit: Immediately opens a new entry using the quick edit method. -sqe Super Quick Edit: Same as Quick Edit, but program closes after entering the new item.

for your next release can you add a total to the list and maybe the posibility to change the location of the database files (a reg value would be best)?
I, as a lot of users, constantly hard reset or upgrade my htc, so it would be nice to have a folder on my sdcard, that would hold all the information this program saves.

Because i added a value to the cab, so i don't have to change manualy after the install, but something strange happens:
i set the path to \storage card\files\others and the reg value is ok, but

I think you have to add a '\' to the end of your folder name in the registry. I guess your database-filenames now look like storesEasyExpensesData.ini ?
It is only stored in that regkey.

If you define a new currency like kRp then you can fill in more or less normal numbers

My suggestion for the touch friendly interface is that you should make next and back buttons on each editing windows, so when you press new entry to be able to loop through each dialog without going to the "main" screen.

and maybe draw a horizontal line at the middle of the digits, to delimit the up and down actions.(i have to admint that at the begining i didn't realise that if you press the digit on the lower part it decreased and on the upper part it increases :D ),

Thanks. I think I will stop adding features for a while (but I don't know if that is weeks or months). If I find a bug, I will try to fix it and bring out an update.

Yes, that's right. But I knew it was QVGA compatible because I run the WM emulator in QVGA mode.
The next release will be in some weeks time. This thing took too much of my free time lately. One thing it will have is AppToDate support.

I love this app... I use it daily.

However, I do have one suggestion.


It would be nice if I could add the miles that I put on my own car. My company reimburses me for these miles and it would be great if I could track them in the same app that I use for expenses.

If this is added to the program, I would recommend creating a forumla like what is used in excel so when the per-mile cost increases every year, we can change it our selves... or in case once company pays over the federal standard.

You can add a 'currency' called 'm' (next to EUR, US$ and GBP) in the default choices. In this way you can track miles easily. The more advanced mile-management things can then be performed in Excel.

In the expense list on the main screen, when I try to resize a column by dragging the column divider (in the top row), my whole device freezes and I have to use a soft-reset. On the emulator, I can easily resize the columns.

Now I want to know if this is a specific problem with the Diamond or the ROM I use, or a general problem.

So: I would like to ask you to test if you can reproduce this bug on your device. Please report what device you have and what results. I have found the bug in all versions of Easy Expenses, so that should not matter.

Be warned: you may have to soft-reset your device when testing this, so don't leave open unsaved data in other applications (the Easy Expenses data is automatically saved when a mutation occurs).

I clicked on the "list" button and picked a currency and it saved the currency. When i clicked on the drop down arrow instead it didn't seem to save the new default. Will have to check it again to see if it was just a one off.

Column resize doesn't hang my WM5 Trinity

I am still looking for a few more people who can test if column-resizing works on their device (thanks deedee for your answer). The size of columns is now saved, although on my own device this is not so usefull as it hangs when trying to resize a column.

Still in Switzerland testing away...

Column resizing working for my 6800 no problem, both dragging with stylus and double clicking on the column to auto resize. One thing I did note with this is that it is not possible to view all of and resize the last cloumn, for notes.

One of the things I am doing is tracking the meals provided by the hotel or bought by others, so I am putting in Zero dollars for the amount. But, for this to work, I have to enter it as one penny and then once the entire entry is done, I go back and edit the one penny zero. If I try and save with zero from the entry it brings up a screen with all fields and the soft buttons are cancel and quick entry.

Seems to be working great. Once I am home I will try the export and see how that goes too.

This program is excellent !!! I just miss one thing...On total, it could subdivide by category: Intended Source and Paid with.

For example:
Expenses:
01/01 - Lunch 1,00 (Int. Employer) (Paid My Cash)
02/01 - Lunch 1,50 (Int. Employer) (Paid Employer)
02/01 - Dinner 2,00 (Int. Me) (Paid My Cash)
03/01 - Breakfest 3,00 (Int. Me) (Paid Employer)
03/01 - Lunch 4,00 (Int. Employer) (Paid My Cash)

The total would be by combinations (Int , Paid):
Int. Employer , Paid My cash = 5,00
Int. Employer , Paid Employer = 1,50
Int. Me , Paid My Cash = 2,00
Int. Me , Paid Employer = 3,00

I would like also to use this to keep track of my company travels, so a new functionality for perdiems would be nice also and a logic if it is better to ask for a perdiem or charge the company as actuals...What do you think ?

What I use is Lazarus with KOL-CE.
Lazarus is an open source alternative to Borland/Codemasters Delphi that is also compatible with WM5/6. Disadvantage of this environment is that a simple 'hello world' application already measures about 10MB.
A solution for this problem is KOL-CE. A simpler package within Lazarus which leads to a simple 'hello world' form of about 50KB: http://wiki.freepascal.org/KOL-CE

I have just started using "Easy Expenses" and I like the program very much. I wrote a small utility to convert the text file that EasyExpenses exports into a QIF file that can be imported into Quicken or MS Money. It works great.

I have some suggestions.

1. In the "options" menu you can add the possibility of displaying a minus sign (for instance -12.40) in the amount column when the item is not an income, this way there is no need for the "income?" column which takes more space.

2. When the amount is 00000.00 there is no possibility of clicking the lower part of the zero. For instance, if you want to put 9.00 €, only one click on the lower part of the units digit should be enough. Now you have to click 9 times on the upper side of the units or click one up on the tens and one down on the units.

3. For the same reason, when you click on the lower part of a digit I suggest that the program would not decrease one unit the digit to the left of the one pressed.

4. In my phone (a HTC Touch) the width of the columns are not saved. I changed the order of the columns, been the currency at the right end.

5. Do you know if there is a way to copy the export.txt file from the phone to a folder in the PC using a command in a Batch file (bat extension) in the PC ? Anyone know if that command exist?

6. When you exit EasyExpenses a task always remains open in the “task manager”. If you enter the program again from the “start menu”, the program instead of switching to the open task, opens a new task. After a while you have several task open of the same program that you have to kill them going to the “Configuration->System->Memory->Running->Stop all. (I don’t know this is the exact wording as my phone is not in English).

Thanks for your suggestions, I have just released a new version that incorporates most of them:

4. I can not reproduce this. Can you check your registry? It should contain the folder
'HKLM\Software\EasyExpenses\Colums' are the keys AmountWidth, DateWidth and so on available? If so, try changing their values and see if you now get a new column width.
5. If you synchronize your My Documents folder via ActiveSync, you get a copy of it on your PC.
6. The first point (that the program stays open when you try to close it) is a setting of windows mobile. On my device I have the option that every program really closes when you tick the cross. You can probably also set that somewhere on your device.
The second point is now fixed: Easy Expenses should only ever open one instance.

I downloaded this and took a look at it. My only problem is that I would like an add feature on money so that as I then add expenses it keeps a running total of money available. Maybe going at it with an ADD money to account option and as far as what kind of account have a way to add your own type. This could be written to a text page and then converted to a decimal type value. Not sure what the program was written in but I do like the simplicity of this item.

You mean for multilangual? Well, this will make all choices in the program in your language, like the currencies, expense descriptions and so on, but not the program itself. You can also achieve this by going to options and click 'Change default choices'.

I will think about making the program really multilangual, but this can take some time (probably will be next year).

I really love this tool. Found it a couple months ago--I use it to track all my cash spending and import the transactions into my budget software on my PC. I import bank/credit card transactions from the bank, so I really don't need to do any data entry on my PC anymore.

When exporting, I would love it if you could configure some export options. Specifically, it would be great if you could:
1. Specify CSV as the export format,
2. Modify the column header names in the export
3. Specify which columns to include, and allow insertion of blank columns
4. Specify the order that the columns appear in the export
5. Specify whether income appears in the export in the same column as a negative number, or a different column as a positive number

I didn't see those requests when skimming previous posts, but I imagine that export enhancements would make the app more useful to other users, and it certainly would save me a lot of time.

You might consider working with the guy who writes YNAB (www.ynab.com) to sell a YNAB-friendly version of your software as a companion to his (Basically, make his categories standard and have options set up so exports will just work without configuration). Seems like a good fit to me, anyway.

Thanks for the ideas. However, I find them a bit complex to incorporate. Maybe it would be better to make an Excel macro/Visual Basic script to do these specific tasks.

I just installed version 0.94.0. It works great, thank you very much. One suggestion: Can you consider for next version including an "exit" in the menu? It could be above "about" or below "edit entry"

I have to open the task manager to close the program. I can not sync the files if the program is opened and I don't want to change the task manager to close the aplication when presing "x". Only a suggestion for a great program. I use it every day and I syncronize it with Ms-Money.

It's a little program that I made. I found this document in internet:

What my program does is convert the "EasyExpensesData.txt" file to a "qif" file. It is "languaje dependant" and has some particular conversions (It creates categories and subcategories depeding on my msmoney settings), so you may not be able to use it.

Maybe Sander can include an "export to qif" in his program.

This is an example of a qif file (used by MsMoney, by Quicken and by other similar programs) Each line starts with "!Tipo", D, N, T, P, or L.

!Tipo:Efec --------> this part is languaje dependant (in english Type:Cash)

D25/02/2009 --------> the date format is languaje dependant too. (after the D)
N6240 ------> this is a document number (after the N)

I am a bit hesitant about the qif export. As all my categories can be edited by the user, I don't know how to put this into the more strict qif format. I don't have MS money and therefore cannot experiment with it. Could you write some (pseudo)code with your ideas how to do this?

In my case I would not use a "qif" export in the pda, because my program does more things.

- It checks if there is a new "EasyExpensesData.txt" in the WM_sync folder of the PC.
- Reads the file and converts the "one level" category in EasyExpenses to the "two level" category in msmoney. (using an editable table that the program has).
- Entries with not conversion are moved to a "Unclassified" category, which I review from time to time in MSMoney and assign manually.
- It automatically exports the data to a qif file and copies it in the msmoney folder for easy import.
- It copies an empty "EasyExpensesData.txt" file to the WM_sync folder to automaticaly delete all data in the pda. (and backups the previous one).

If there is some interest in the program I can modify and share it as freeware, providing that I have some free time. Or I can give you the code as a starting point in case you want to make a PC companion of EasyExpenses.

Can you be a bit more specific? This is a very general error message, and I will not be able to fix it with this info alone. Exactly under which circumstances do you get the error?

I am using it on a stock AT&T Tilt with the original ROM. Under Menu Options after pressing the change data location button it allows you to select a new location until you save the changes then you get the error message.
As for editing entries, well I select the entry and it wont even highlight it and allow any edit or delete any entries. I can make new entries though.

Another way of editing an entry is double clicking it. In this case you don't have to use the 'what' column.

I was able to change the location in the registry and it worked. As for the edit it works using the what column. I changed the column order not realizing that.

The only really jaggy edges are in the soft keys at the bottom of the screen. The rest looks much better than 320x240.
I am affraid I can not do anything about the soft keys. The KOL-CE environment that I use is quite limited in this regard.

I have added some file functions to the program. You can now open, save as or make a new database. The file open/save dialogs are a bit cheesy, but that is difficult to change.

In order to not overcrowd the open file dialog with all kinds of .txt files, I changed the default extension of the database to .eef.

I had the same problem. I install the program at first time. It gives me an error 2 when create a new database. I have a Diamond.

I think the problem is to put the database in the internal storage. If you do not put the database in the internal storage, it works!

I've done some further testing and got it running now.
It looks like the latest version has problems creating the db file.
I installed the oldest version availalable (EasyExpenses.0.92a.cab from the first post of this thread). This Version has no problems and is starting.
After testing it a few times i installed the latest version again.
This time i was told that there is an old version of the db file found that has to be converted and i had to enter a name for the converted one. I did that and now its's working without problems. :)

I think the problem is that you changed [currency] to [Währung]. The program is looking for [currency] and can not find it, therefore it uses some default values.

It should not. On my Diamond, it does not crash when you save the data on 'Internal storage'. Unfortunately, my phone does not have a separate storage card slot, so I can not test this.

What version do you use, the latest (0.94.4)?

And what do you mean with data, the database (that gets asked at first startup and can be handled from the File menu), or the settings file (from the Options dialog)?

The default option is always the last one that was chosen, so if you once have used AUD, the next entry will show AUD as the default choice.

and easy entry application and this one is very close. Thank you!
The following are some suggestions:

1) Add a quantity value, so that both the cost and amount can be
recorded. For example: $33.50 USD for 10 gallons of gasoline; or,
$3.00 for 1 gallon of milk

2) Make the application even more finger friendly, by using one touch
multi-level entry screens. For example, if you would add the quantity
field from 1 above, touching the display field could pop you out to the
large finger value entry then hitting <Enter> pops you back to the
first screen. You could do the same for the Expense type, date, and
etc.

3) Provide an option to change the number of digits of the entry value.
For example, changing a "digits option" to 4.2 would then allow numbers
as large as 9999.99

4) The expense type should carry with it the complete set of defaults.
For example: For "Hotel", the currency, "Is income", "Intended source",
and "paid with" should all revert back to what "Hotel" had selected the
last time it was used.

I thought the rectangular box would be big enough for that. It is nearly the same size as the arrows on the numbers. I don't want to mess with the edit box itself. It is needed if you want manually modify the entry itself (if you want to type with the hard/software keyboard).

I am sorry, this will just get too complex. You could do this yourself in post-processing (e.g. in Excel). Sort the list by expense type and now fill in the appropriate entries.

Therefore I also had to improve the way that currencies, expense types, intended sources and payment methods were handled. This has all been done, together with some other stuff (see opening post).

Strange bug found:

If you click on the date picker and go back from january, month 01, it goes to 00 and then to 553, well that's what shows, and the year goes off line as well. The months then just rotate in that order while the year increases at a seemingly random increment.

Yes! I am using wm6.5, and like I said the screen freezing doesn't happen every time, maybe its only happening on my phone, so don't worry about it, thanks for the feedback.

I have fixed all the bugs that have been reported for version 0.95.0, except for the occasional freezing, as I can not reproduce this.
Unfortunately, I will not make the app suitable for a 240x240 screen. This would take me too much effort, as it requires a significant overhaul of nearly every screen. Sorry about this.

You can do this yourself: press the arrow on the left of the amount entrance field to get more digits (up to 6). Press the arrow on the right to get rid of cents.
To add another currency, go to options, general, currency (in the latest version).

The last request is easy to do, I will add an option for this in the next version.
The first is a bit more complex: programming it is no problem, but the question is how to implement this. Easy Expenses is designed originally as a tool for travel expenses with some emphasis on the use of more than one currency. This causes a problem for giving this statistic. I could make a table with category on one axis and month on the other. The values would then be income-expenses converted to the primary currency. But this will give problems for people that e.g. also want to use miles or kilometers as a currency, they will not want to have this converted into their primary currency.
And having a table with all currencies for an entry will be very confusing.
If you have any suggestions on this (while keeping the multi-currency nature of the program), I am interested to hear them.

And of course you can always use excel or some other program to do it yourself from the imported database.

What about only adding all values per category independent from the currency together? For one-currency users (like me) this would fit the needs and the multi-currency users might not need that function!?

I.E. each account (credit cards, bank accounts etc.) being tracked individually so that the first screen was an account selector... this way you could quickly look at your current running balances on credit cards and available funds in bank accounts. This would be a great feature for people like me that spread our money out into 2 savings, a checking, and a few different credit cards.

You can change the order of the columns in the overview screen so the payment method is the first one, and you can sort your entries according to payment method. However, you can not change the order of the entry accounts, but do you really need that?

Please could you make the "Finger friendly entry" fields more UI theme friendly. You seem to be using a "default" colour setting for the text colour, but forcing the background colour to white. It would help tremendously if you could either use a "default" colour setting for both, or force the colour of both (whichever is easiest for you).

I use the Titanium LTD theme, and at the moment the finger friendly entry fields appear as white text on a white background.

Thanks in advance for all the great work you do on this app! Its a great product, and sure beats keeping track of expenses in Excel.

("Setting files already exist on new location. Do you want to replace them from old location?") Maybe instead of yes/no have replace/don't replace as the two buttons, i accidentally hit the wrong button when scanning the message box (doh!)

I have fixed the cancel-problem, but unfortunately can not solve your other problem. The programming language I use (KOL-CE) does not support message-boxes with non-default buttons. Therefore I would have to program this myself, which is a bit much work for such a minor problem.

group C is made of 2 persons (allocated expense 20€)
expense 2
a person of group B (3 persons) is the payer of 60 € (allocated expense 30€)
group A is made of 1 person only for this expense (allocated expense 10€)
group C is made of 2 persons (allocated expense 20€)

At the end group B and C will refund respectively 10 and 40 to group A.

Funny that you ask this. I made a windows program to do just this when I was a student and lived in a student house. However, to add this functionality to Easy Expenses will take quite a bit of time. Maybe someday, but definitely not soon (I have to write a PhD thesis in the next three months).

Have you successfully finished with your PhD thesis? Would you have some time to dedicate to my request (Expenses allocation between persons/group of persons travelling and making money exchange from time to time) ?
This will not be of course the same app, but EE could be a nice starting point.
- Intended source field could become the Payer
- We need an additional field for Beneficiary (with an addon in the "options "to define the weight of each person/group in the expense
- We need an additional field for the "Location" of the expense
* and one piece quite difficult to integrate (although we could use the option "Is income" : Money Exchange (I gave x of that currency (expense) and receive of the other currency (income).
I fully appreciate that my request goes far beyond than your prior project on sharing expenses between student and may be time consuming, but should you decide to take on this chaleenge I can help by providing the 'business cases' and do the testing.

I have finished writing my thesis. However, I have decided not to spend much time on Easy Expenses any more. It is clear that Windows Mobile is slowly dying as hardly any new models are coming out any more. Therefore I am sure my next phone will not be WM (probably Android).
Furthermore, the number of reactions and downloads on Easy Expenses is also dwindling, probably for the same reason. So, from now on, I will only do bug-fixes and small changes.

Maybe in the future I will make an Android version, however this will require me to start from scratch as the development tools I use are not compatible with Android.

I've just tried this app, and it does look interesting.

However, for my application I need more data fields for recording information regarding the expense.

I have been using the rather old ScaryBear PocketExpensePro, but that is no longer supported/available.

What I am looking for in colum headings, and obviosuly ways to add the data, is:

Date | Exchange Rate | What | Amount | Currency | Payment | City | Vendor | Notes | Client
