Dammit, I hope that changed keyboard dosen't stay, I was loving the fact that the new model had a row just for number keys.
I mean, seriously, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING, replacing the number row with a symbol row? How likely is somebody going to use / or # or * over 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0? Why would they do this?
Sigh, I wonder if its possible to import an unlocked phone from somewhere else and flash it with the US firmware..... I wonder if there is a way to keep the second camera functional in this way.
That has been discussed many a time, and from using it I've come to realize I like this keyboard more. I was one of the strongest supporters of the all number row, but seriously, don't knock it till ya tried it. ;-)

1. Can you speed test your device while on 3G? (Select 1MB from the link below)
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
Sure, but I'm at the border of a 3G zone, barely within it... So if the speed is less than expected, you can blame the network more so than the phone. Since everyone doubts every word I say, here's proof:

Pin is me, after entering my address at att.com/wireless
1 bar of 3G, no HSDPA, test came up with 471-502kb/s over a few times run through it.
2. Can you turn off 3G? There's an option to turn off the data connection, but it just reconnects when I try to use something that requires data.
4. Is your ROM the same as the one leaked here?
Indeed, I checked the ROM and radio and they're the same.

1. Thanks man. The test results would be best if you had "great" 3G signal.
2. The setting may be under phone > options > Band > "select network type" to GSM. If the "Band" tab is there, a picture of all the options on it may put a lot of arguments to rest.

Haha I think after 51 pages they've run out of questions. Have any yourself?

I'd like to ask a few questions:
* how slow is the device in switching between landscape and portrait?
Faster than any other WinMo device I've seen when in the same program, when you're in TF3D and it has to transfer it takes 1-2 seconds.
* how long does it take to charge (plugged into wall, not via computer usb)?
Someone asked me earlier this morning, I'd started charging at 3:30AM and when I checked for him at 5:56AM it was full... From completely drained, it died on me. Beyond that, I don't know.
* what is the preformance like with multiple apps open? I know the ram should be fine, but the cpu + graphics are handling a 4x time load drawing the screen than the 400mhz vogue (which is what I have).
Well, since I feel I haven't given any "substance" to this thread, I decided to be nice and run a test for you. Activesync open, opera with 3 tabs open, album open showing 1 picture, solitaire open, youtube app open, teeter open, and i opened up skyfire to view youtube within the browser while panning the window around the video... The results?
Perfect, as if no programs were running at all.
* Wifi signal strength? how is it? I'm not asking you to walk as far as you can till you lose signal, but on average does it seem better or worse than other devices?
A little better than my R20 Satellite laptop (I don't even want to say that out loud)
Hey thanks alot man. It's really nice of you to answer all these questions.
Dang Opera with three tabs alone will make a small but noticeable effect on performance of the vogue. This thing really is leagues better.
One more question - I'm looking at the interface walkthrough by theunwired and while in Opera the guy can zoom in/out by spinning around the dpad like a ipod scrollwheel. Does yours do that too, or was it some extra software not included in the AT&T version?

Oh no, that's standard. D-pad is the only way to zoom in and out except double tapping (which only has 1 zoom level). HTC president Peter Chou said they did this to make it a "truly 1 handed PDA experience" and as he said it he made a pinching motion, obviously taking a shot at the iPhone. ;-) It's touch sensitive as well as having 4 click button arrows around the outside.

3G Data speed working on your device is what we are all waiting to see. We know that the device will get EDGE on AT&T network (voice & slow data) but according to specs it won't do 3G WCDMA data.

Yeah, well, as I said I'm in a shitty area for getting 3G. AT&T's been known to "stretch the zones" a bit, so I'm probably even closer to not getting 3G than the map shows. 471 kb/s is very acceptable if you ask me, especially for where I am... I'd bet it at least doubles if I were to go into Boston (but I'm too lazy). :-P

Yes, on the very border of a 3G zone I got 471 kb/s on that speed test that someone linked me to. It had 1 or maybe 2 bars of 3G, HSDPA not active. I'll frequently grab an H even here, but I wasn't getting the best signal at the time I tested.
In comparison, when I went on a college tour in Boston I had 3G everywhere I went (with my Duo), and full signal. This phone would blow away the mark of 471 that I have here.

I think 471 confirms it then, I have never got anything over 300 on EDGE. If you are gettign 471 then you are getting 3G (crappy 3G) but 3G non the less.

Question for Black93300ZX,
How thick is the phone compared to the HTC 8525 or the iPhone? I use to own the 8525 and liked it but it was to bulky and since I drive a motorcycle it was uncomfortable so I purchased the iPhone. The iPhone is cool but it lacks so much like copy/paste, sms, video recording, hacking, etc.
I am seriously thinking of buying the Euro Pro Touch version but I am not sure if I could live with only having edge (even though thats what I use now on the iphone) especially having a 3G phone.
Do you know if the Touch Pro has visual voicemail, copy/paste or if there is a program out there you can get?
Thanks..

This may or may not work. You may also have to replace phoneSettings.dll like we did on the Kaiser.

Hi I have a question about the touch pro, what I would like to know is what the screen glare is like on this handset. My current phone (Sony Ericsson P990i) has a lot of trouble with screen glare especially when going out side in broad day light. Is this the case with the HTC Touch Pro?

lol yeah *great* trade  I was going to get a Tilt myself now that my contract is up (IM A FREE AGENT NOW!!!) but seeing as how they're out of the refurb versions, I'm definitely going to wait and see if this puppy really comes out for AT&T
Great screens Black! That TF3D looks beautiful IMO

I've never experienced screen glare with this thing, EXCEPT WITH FINGERPRINTS. On a clean screen, the backlight compensates... but once you get prints all over the screen you can get blinded fairly easily. The backlight can get VERY bright (and of course the light sensor automatically compensates). Works very well, but beware of battery life.

Wow, seriously? Did you just ask that?
This phone is made for AT&T, it came from the factory with no front camera and an AT&T ROM on it. It was made for 850/1900 UMTS bands.
It seems like half the people here are assuming I bought a Euro version and flashed it for AT&T, that's NOT the case. We don't yet have proof that will work, wait a few days.

ANYONE DEBATING RAPHAEL VS DIAMOND:
I just got my 8GB microSD card today, I plan on buying a 32 when it comes out but until then I'll be fine with this.
Got it maybe an hour ago, and I have 5.22 gigs used. That's for the people that have argued with me "Oh there's no way you can use up 4 gigs of space"... Well, you plan on using GPS? My GPS program and all of the maps, buildings and points of interest alone takes up 1.22 gigs. Think about it.

I think many people have dedicated media players and flash drives to hold their music, movies and files. I'm assuming that's what you filled your phone with, music and movies. I personally wouldn't use my Tilt as a media player given its terrible battery life. Also, how many people regularly listen to all 60GBs on their Ipods and Zunes? I'm pretty sure there are a few of them out there but not a lot.

I'm not saying you need 60, I'm saying you need more than 4. A 16 gig card would probably do fine for me, but 4? Come on... Seriously? Like I just told you, 1.2 gigs is for my GPS alone, do you not plan on using your GPS function of your Diamond?

Exactly, why do you think the iPhone's lowest capacity is 8 now? Maybe they realized, hey, 4 gigs isn't shit when it comes to a phone you use for a lot of things. Oh, people have separate storage for their music, videos and files. So what do you use the Diamond for, a conversation piece? "Oh, I don't plan on actually installing a lot of programs or GPS or anything, I just want to look at myspace and text all day." Good call.

Yeah, but Diamonds go for $5-600 right now and touch pro's are all close to a grand, why would you drop that kinda money on a phone when you won't use it to its fullest capabilities? The people who buy Diamonds when Touch Pro's are available (unless it's a question of money), in my mind, are these kinds of users. They want a phone to say they have a phone, not something to really beat up as a "power user" so to say. If you really want something that looks pretty with flickability and user interface but not something you can customize and use, go buy an iPhone. :)

That has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that people pay tons of money for great phones they don't even know how to use. 4 gigs is not enough when you plan on using your phone for all of its features, that's all I'm saying. Now I'm out, so you kids play nice.

That may be true, but if the phone is a good fit at something that is valuable to the owner, space may not be an issue, nor is having to use all of the phones features to justify the purchase. TV Out for instance, or true qwerty keyboard along with 3g and wifi.
I plan to use the phone primarily for capturing and transferring data in the field, as well as powerpoint presentations. Neither will require over 4 GB.

Could you buy a phone for half the price that would do those things just as well? 9 times out of 10, the answer is yes. I won't argue your particular instance, because there are exceptions to everything... But a Diamond owner started telling me the other day how NO ONE can use that much space, it's useless to have more than 4 gigs... That's all that annoys me, when people talk out of their ass like I could never actually make use of more than they have. If the Diamond is good for you that's awesome, but half of the Diamond owners talk down to Touch Pro owners because of... thickness. Is 7mm worth 28 more gigs and a full QWERTY? To you, maybe not... To me, absolutely.

16th August 2008, 10:45 AM
Well, I upgraded my Diamond to a Raphael mostly because of the limited 4Gb memory (although I did miss the QWERTY too).
I travel quite frequently, so I don't want to carry multiple bits of kit around, with their chargers, cases, etc. I want one device with Sat-Nav, music, video, and PDA functionality. And if you're away from home for a couple of weeks at a time, you need as much storage as you can get.
Garmin MapSource is great for keeping map sizes down, but I still have about 1Gb taken up by them. 1Gb of video, About 500Mb of documents, 250Mb of E-Mail attachments, and 100Mb of cab's that I don't install unless I need. That leaves 1Gb for music, which isn't anywhere near enough for a two week trip, and that's before you start taking any photos...
8Gb is fine -gives me about 4Gb free for music, but I'll be buying a 16Gb card soon, and the music collection will be expanded.

Agreed. I think we'd all love it if this phone were thinner, but the kb is the big draw for this phone. Add the removable memory, 3g/wifi, etc. and it becomes feasible to use the pro in situations that would normally employ a laptop.
Speaking more directly about your pro, have you found anything "crippled" on yours (being an AT&T unit), like we've heard Verizon will be doing, such as reduced ram, accelerometer nixed, etc.?
Btw, your phone may not be a pro... but a fuze. (There's a new rumor that AT&T's version of the pro will be named the fuze.)

Oh it is, it's awful. I find myself wiping it down with the cleaning cloth after like 10 minutes of use. The worst part is, with the TF3D you make the same swipes consistently (along the bottom, across the center and vertically) so you get fingerprints in a distinct pattern... Looks kinda funny.

Perhaps I wasn't being clear enough......I know that the software works with ANY device that has Windows Mobile...That wasn't the issue.
The problem is: even on the Touch Diamond non-3G version, SlingPlayer didn't really perform well since it was only connected to EDGE network speeds.
The issue is: How does it perform on a 3G network?? The Touch Pro here is the perfect test for it.
So the question again is whether "Black.." would be willing to, in the near future, test it? If so, I can privately provide what it takes to test it, and then share that info, not only here, but also with the Sling community.
I hope that's a little more clearer.
thx

Slingplayer worked beautifully via 3G on my HERMES (att 8525) so I'm sure it'll work fine on this.
Ya, but I seem to only get vague answers like it's good or it works.
However, I was hoping of getting an answer like:
"I get _______ fps and my stream is at _________ Kbps"
Instead of: "it depends" on your upload speed, or blah blah blah.
Anyway, if anyone would like to provide specific numbers, I'd really appreciate the info, esp. on the Touch Pro/Raphael...as it's one of the phones I'm seriously considering, together with the SE Xperia X1.
Thanks

I tried installing the Vijay Tools cab which contains Flashlight and Superbright. Flashlight wouldn't work at all for me so I uninstalled it again - didn't even bother trying superbright!
You can go into the camera and turn the flashlight on... It's not like the camera's any more exposed because it's in use.

Yeah, can't get Mets games. The rights to all Major League Baseball games are either to local stations only or to MLB Extra Innings, which is a $200/season service to watch every game. Slingbox is the only way to fix this, as I have a house in NY that gets those local stations but I'm in MA for a good amount of time out of every year.

usa restricts recording higher than than due to the fcc regulations so 640 will never be allowed on usa devices until the fcc changes the rules. They are releasing a seperate x1 model for us as well (X1a) which has the lowered recording resolution

I figured when they said they would add 5 rows of keys, that meant they were going to have a row of numbers at the top... But now that I see they are still in the same place as the Kaiser. I would have rather had the number keys on the top of the keyboard...
Wonder why they did this... Seems like I would be just using the function keys again to do the exact same thing, but now I have an extra row of "special" characters...

Yeah, everyone loves saying how horrible the design is, and all I have to say is this: You have not used the keyboard. You do not know how efficient it is compared to a top row. The fact is, you use punctuation a lot more than numbers in your regular typing, so it makes it faster unless you plan on typing a complete mix of number/letter/number/letter. There, it's been said. I was a big believer in a top row of numbers until I used this to type, so much quicker. Conversation over until you've tried one yourself.

I agree - I used to use a treo and recall enough that I used symbol buttons much more than any number values.

As great as Android will likely be in the long run, I have no illusions that it will have a rough start. For all the things I want a mobile device to do, I know WM can do it, and I know how to get it done, today. With Android, there's the potential to do everything better than WM, but everyone will be starting from Page 1.
I spent some time with Maemo, and while it was great seeing a lot of opensource activity, it really sucks when there's a few key features you really need which are still "in development", while the solution already exists for other platforms.
Not that WM6 is a perfect platform (that's why there's WM7). But I figure I'll have the Touch Pro for at least 1-2 years, which will give Android time to catch up, as well as give manu's time to (hopefully) put out dozens of Android devices to iron out the initial kinks.
Not that I have anything against early-adopters. I need people like you to fill in the gaps once Android comes out, so my transition from WM to Android later on is as smooth as possible. ;)

Well, my connection's pretty terrible (I max out at 180 kb/s on any download from any website) so it won't be accurate of using a decent wifi connection... But it was staying at around 13-15fps, and I found out later the max fps setting was at 15, didn't allow it to go to "true" framerate.
Regardless of statistics, as "fps" is possibly the most overrated stat of them all, the video was always very viewable and never choppy when watching a mixture of baseball, football, golf highlights, and cartoons. Definitely recommended.

METS? I thought we discussed this. They're too far back to have any chance at this point. Root for the Cubs who is *AGAIN* leading the ESPN Power Rankings:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/powerranking
The Brewers' eight-game winning streak wasn't enough. Neither was the Angels' four-game winning streak. There's just no catching the Cubs -- in the National League Central or at the top of the MLB Power Rankings.
The Cubs are No. 1 for the second straight week, rising into their own stratosphere of excellence. They now have won four straight, seven of their past eight, nine of 11 and 14 of 17. Shall we keep going? OK, one more: They have won eight straight away from The Friendly Confines.
The Angels, who still have the best record in baseball, sit at No. 2, followed by the Rays, the Red Sox and the Brewers, who move up three spots to No. 5.
The top risers and fallers of the week dwell in the NL East, where the Mets climbed five spots to No. 7 and the Phillies dropped six to No. 10.
Don't forget to keep an eye on the MBL overall standings: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/standings?date=20080818&type=reg&br=9&year=2008&order=false&st=2

To see if there are any items that would have fell thru that I was interested in. To search ended auctions, you need to log into ebay. Its VERY easy! I have found bids that I was interested in by doing this MANY times and after asking the seller questions, I sometimes found that the deal did NOT go thru and it was still up for grabs. In all honesty, if this guy DID get screwed over, I think that I would not be the one to blame!! riiiiight..?

I meant to compare it to the AT&T Fuze. Which will retail for much much less. It's not a good deal in my eyes. In UK it's about the same. Except with the front camera and the keyboard and no PTT button. So in my eyes, bad deal.
Most people here don't use PTT, so that's really a non-issue for most. I personally am disappointed they take the front camera off, even though i understand it has to do with not having video calling.
As for you not thinking it is a good deal, i think you're point has been made abundantly clear. You should, however, consider that since most of the people who do have one right now have paid serious amounts of money for the device, they obviously do not agree with you. It is okay to express your opinion and be done with it, but the 10th time you say it falls on less gracious ears.
Being an early adopter on any new technology or device is always very expensive. My guess is that the retail price of a Fuze is not going to be less than $600 when it is first released, and even at that price will still probably be locked to the AT&T network. Purchasing an unlocked phone @ retail is always signfificantly more expensive, and i think it is reasonable that a phone which supports video calling would cost significantly more. The Touch Pro is not retailing for all that much more than the Tytn II did when it was released. It's just how this works.

1. He bought a AT&T one didnt he? I know no one uses PTT here.
2. Retail price will be around the same as the tilt + $100 so yeah. You're close
3. You're right. Retail + unlocked is expensive, but if you call AT&T and ask nicely <sarcasm> then they give you a unlock code. I got one every time by world support
4. Video calling should not cost significantly more. Both phones support video calling, one just has a camera to do it and the other doesnt. If you noticed, the tilt and the kaiser have video support but the only difference was one has a camera to do it and the other was crippled.

I have to agree with scotchua here. Krazie as much as I was on your side about the pricing issue, you're beating a dead horse by calling the purchases these folks have made "bad deals". The price of a new pre release, unlocked device will always cost your left nut and your right middle finger. ALWAYS!! And as the devices get even more powerful, more useful, the price will only go up. Hey man I'm not much older than you at 18 but I've been wide eyed long enough to fully see that these guys on this and other forums are just hardcore. I can't say I'd pass on paying back a loan to buy a phone but if I had the cash I would buy an unlock, front camera toting, Touch Pro in half a heartbeat :D But I can't :( so I will patiently wait for AT&T to release it, then flash it with a home brewed ROM straight from my people here at XDA. Point being, lets get over the price tag on these pre releases and be glad they exist so we can learn EVERYTHING about them and truly make them our own when we get them

Alright, this is the final comment I make towards you or towards anyone regarding your criticism towards me. "Passing up paying back loans"... Really? Hmmm... I guess a 15 year old knows he's gonna make a ton of money in 20 years, whereas I don't know anything about my future while I'm working towards my bachelor's in electromechanical engineering... I guess I'll be broke. I'm really handling my credit poorly, which is why my credit score is only, oh I don't know, 746? For a 20 year old, that's about as good as it gets, stop talking when you really don't know what you're talking about. If you think I got a bad deal, you must really love trashing everyone on this forum who paid $1100 on preorder for a european model they don't even know will work on 3G where they live... In fact, I believe the person who linked me to the auction said "man, I would've gotten that if I didn't already preorder mine..."

What money you have in 20 years will depend a lot more on the quality of your investments, and you earning potential than on how much money you spent on a phone. To me, even if i spend $900 on the phone it would be less than i make in a week, and as such not as much of a ridiculous amount of money to spend. It really does depend on the person.

If you don't care about 3G, ANY version of the phone will work for you as they are all quad band GSM with EDGE. If you want 3G, it's looking like T-Mobile won't be feeling any Touch Pro love as it's missing the needed freq. for T-Mobile USA's 3G. But if that's not that important to you, you can pick up the UK version now and be all set.

Actually, something just occured to me, the whole missing drivers/underperforming debacle from the ATT Tilt.
Does your Att Fuse/Fuze have drivers? How well does video acceleration work? Does it lag when the touchscreen is used? How is the performance when using a game or app that renders in realtime 3D? (Like Call of Duty).
... Oh, and has anybody figured out yet if the FM radio's hardware has been removed or just the software?
I hate how these things keep getting crippled in the US release...

Last i heard we were still waiting on a headset to arrive to find out if fm radio could be added back into the functionality.
From what i have heard there hasn't been anyone complaining about the performance of the touchpro, at least thus far. We will all know very soon i imagine as more and more will pop up, but so far i've only heard good things.

Enjoying all of the insight and info from this thread. Black, thanks for sharing. I have one question....Being w/ ATT, I would like to use this phone w/ their 3G service, so I don't want to chance buying a Euro Touch Pro and trying to flash it w/ a US 3G rom. I'm willing to wait for the Fuze to be released. The only dilema is I don't like what ATT has done with the keyboard. **When the Fuze is released, will there also be a true non-branded HTC Touch Pro released as well that supports ATT's 3G? I'm not up for a contract renewal for another year, so I'll be paying $$$ either way. Thanks in advance if someone can advise.

I think you're very optimistic if you believe you can just buy the ATT version of the Touch Pro without ending up flashing a custom rom.
From past experience, ATT will cripple a lot of the functions of the device so they can squeeze $$ from you for add-on services; streaming video, ptt, gps, im vs. sms....
From my point of view, if you are throwing out the money for this device, just wait for confirmation on whether flashing the NA radio to the EU version. I don't have very high hopes for the vanilla ATT rom.

I guess I'm just asking the same thing as everyone else.....If a flashed euro HTC TP can't receive ATT 3G, will HTC release one that will? Again, I'm trying to avoid buying direct from ATT to get the green #'s along the top of the keyboard layout.

As far as the numbers on the top, that may be an AT&T thing only. As we all know, they did a similar thing with the Tilt and T-Mobile has done it with their own HTC units. As far as the color, don't hold your breath for green. Pre-production HTC units use green and production units use blue. Don't get me wrong, things could possibly change, but it was ALWAYS that way in the past.

Black is right, i knew he was joking. I appreciate the sentiment that we should keep the forum respectful toward other members. Please everyone who reads this please remember that if you are offended by something that someone says it is of the utmost importance that you remember that regardless of what another person says you are still responsible for your own actions and ensuring that they are in accordance with the forum policies. That is to say that you should always begin by trying to educate other members, rather than retaliate against them. If they are unwilling to be respectful, then i recommend that you report them to the mods and let the mods deal with it. Remember we are all here to learn and share, so lets keep this place fun.

All I'm saying is please don't brag like your a rock star when your really not!
Well i haven't seen you say please much, and as i stated already, that is PM material right there. I see that Black has agreed to continue the discussion over PM, and as such i see no need for further commentary about it.

Rofl. This is a hilarious thread. I wish I lived in Alaska! Everyone get's paid $1000 a year I think? so people can drill oil there. lol. At least that's what I heard =/ How are you willing to drop this though? You yourself admit it that you saw the eBay auction, contacted the seller immediately and asked if you could pay $900 and if he would take the auction down now and he agreeded. So end of story..

Wow, what's your deal? This thread is about the Touch Pro. Please take your petty bickering to PM or drop it. Not only is it off topic and everybody was warned, but it looks like you're just trying to destroy black because you're jealous.
Hell, it might be time to close this thread and for Black to say screw you all. If I were Black, I know I would.

Look, I'm a reasonable guy. I'll drop it right now. All I'm saying is lay off on the 'HAHA, I GOT IT AND YOU DONT!' You gave us ALOT of good info on the US version of the phone and I think that is great!
I'M DONE!

Actually, that's a great idea. Anyone can IM me on any messenger or email me if they want more info about the Touch Pro, but there will be no more talk of it on the forum. I'm not about to become involved in a mud-slinging contest. Mods, please lock this thread. Thanks.

Hell. Delete it =) Locking does not help. I think we should start a new thread. "Touch Pro vs AT&T Fuze. What is the difference"

So let's stop posting and let Kraize have the last word :P (I kid I kid) But I guess we can consider this thread locked (hopefully soon before it gets even more out of hand =/) and positioned to be deleted.

If you wish you lived here then move here, there's plenty of room up here ;). It's not $1,000, it's actually a lot more than that, though your explanation is an extreme oversimplification to the extent i think you got it from watching the Simpson's movie, lol. For the record, i paid $.80/gal more for gas than the national average yesterday, and there are many places here paying over $6/gal, so it's not all free money up here.
Here's a wikipedia article that explains what it is very briefly, i'm sure you know how to search if you'd like to know more.

Thread CLOSED
I don't think the thread needs to be closed, i just think people need to act like reasonable adults and remember why we're here. Jimmy will probably end up having to come delete a bunch of posts. He did warn everyone yesterday not to stir up trouble.

If you think someone is out of line then the proper procedure is to report the post as offensive or breaking the rules in some way, and provide an explanation why you think so. Then let the mods decide what needs to be done about it, as they are not involved in the situation and will act impartially to simply enforce the rules regardless of the offending parties. Remember that you not liking someone isn't grounds for being banned, and than if you get into a heated exchange often times both parties are ban worthy...so the point is, don't fight...share knowledge...develop things...be courteous.

Lol. Thanks for the info. But Alaska is a beautiful place to live in I would take it. I just can't really stand the cold. I like the sun better. But it was fun when I stayed in Tahoe for a couple days.

Seriously, I warned you guys, mrvanx warned you guys. And you don't get it. This is not a elementary school play ground. Thanks for ruining an otherwise awesome thread.
And don't think you can just start another thread to continue this mindless banter. I have eyes everywhere. :D
