View Full Version : Task App with Sliding Panel Support

Hello group, I was loking the panel today, getting to know it better and I realized that the Tasks are not in there; it would be great to have a Sliding Panel to view your Tasks by Categories or at least by Due Date with a similar interface like the Calendar where you can create a task but with the option to select a category eg. Inbox, that would be awesome option; since you all helped me with the Vanilla OS which I plan to use Rickys v14, I would give the contribution to this project.
So to recap here is what I would want from this panel option or addon:
1. Have a panel for the Tasks that shows you which task s are due
a. Today
b. Past Due
c. to create a Task into a category called Inbox
or if all those options are too tedious to code just option C would be good.
So there you have it, anybody interested please let me know.
Thanks in advance
ps. is there a way to backup your current ROM just in case you want to put it back

Dude, You JUST TOOK THE WORDS OUTTA MY MOUTH!!!
I don't know how I forgot to post this but I've always wanted tasks in my sliding panel, infact, more than appointments, I would use tasks anyday.
I'll see what can be done about this. Thanks for reminding me.
P.S: I have use for this, big time as I really need it for school and for personal productivity.
EDIT: Yes, there is a way to backup everything. Google Sprite Backup or SPB Backup (Either are good, I think SPB would be more stable, haven't tried it yet but sometimes, Sprite doesn't copy over everything properly)

That's funny, telepathic minds, but yeah this option would be super useful for anybody, after all the native Task app is so old school this would spice things up a lot, for productivity this would be superb, I'm envisioning a nice Vista like icon to match the cool Calendar icon wow I can almost taste it, lol, well hopefully somebody can help with this cause.

Why not work that idea plus calendar functions into the CAppointments panel somehow? There are only two pages there, and they're all about the same general theme... Task, To Do, Calendars, Appointments, etc.

What rom are you running? Ricky's V24 has a "My Programs" panel that you can customize to add various apps using CHome Configurator. I added Live Search to it in about two minutes, with the majority of the time spent trying to find the Live Search icon in the file system. ;)

Oh really, the actual Live Search application with all the modules, eg. weather, maps, movies etc. Sweet, I have to update my OS to that one, question for you, how fast is it and memory efficient, I tried to upload it but I got an Error 260 hopefully I'll have a little more time and upload this OS, I'm dying to try it.

Hey lucky, does papyrus write those tasks in a place where they're easily accessible to read from a script? If so, it would make it simple to make a plugin for it using mortscript. I never had time to write a task app from scratch, and never found a way to read the tasks windows was saving.

Oxio Task panel would be superb, that's a great idea, because when you think about, Oxio is pretty propably the best one out there and it offers a great funcionality. I'm envisioning a panel with different views per filter ie. Today, Next 7 Days, and stuff like that.
Hopefully this will come to fruition soon, I'm really suprised with the amount of developement that goes on here that no one actively uses tasks that much, its such an integral part of a smartphone, but oh well, let's keep dreaming ;)

Just thought i'd show you how SBSH Papyrus shows on the panel, not sure if it will just show the first appointment "as i don't really use it" but does allow quick access to Papyrus via click on panel and to write a new appointment is the second choice on the panel, i know it's not purfect bit it's better than navigating the start menu or using a gadget via SmartToolKit.

Hey guys I'm working on this as we speak because I spent all day figuring out the way that the registry is setup so that i can get it displaying the way i want, and after I figured that out I was trying to work on how to interface with the Outlook API. Good news, is that i did find a way and the best part is that it will work with the tasks that are supplied through your active sync and Outlook, so no need for 3rd party apps. Bad news is im tired, i will start coding tomorrow, and my mouth smells like a vagina.

Okay, so... there is a major problem halting my development right now. I have created what i need to make my program display correctly minus the neat flashy images next to the tasks, but the real problem is that The API that can interface with PocketOutlook only fires the event if the change was made by my code and not by the tasks.exe application which is bundled with Windows.
Therefor meaning despite the fact there is an event for when the CollectionList is changed (ie. create, update, delete.) Since it doesnt happen in my code, and its done through a separate application, the event does not fire, which makes it so the home screen wont update at the time changes have been made.
Even worse off than that is there is a solution.
How is that worse off... well let me tell you.
The solution is to connect using POOM(still unsure how to do that considering its in native code, and Im more of a managed code kinda guy), and changing the IItem::setProp so that it allows notification of the folder to all applications. Meaning the events would fire then.
Now then there are a few ways of going about this:
1.
Now there are 3rd party applications that actually do the action described above (OpenNETCF) but i believe that they need to be purchased. Still waiting on an email back but im amost positive.
2.
Make it so the user has to update the homescreen by clicking on the sliding panel.
3.
update the panel every so often.
4.
make some sort of thread that runs in the background and checks the PocketOutlook agains an older version and once changes are noticed then update.
5.
the other solution would be to create a 3rd party application that edits the tasks. The only downside is that, unless i figure out a way, the tasks that will be synced using active sync wont update unless they were manually updated.
1,4,5 are going to take much much more time/money... (more than the 24 hours i have already invested in this, and the $0 dollars)
but 2 and 3 are very plausible in terms of time so they will most likely be the result for now.
I would also like to see if there are a few volunteers that wouldn't mind testing some of the progress so far. I have edited my phone quite some since starting this project so i need some testers that have different environments to make sure that this does indeed work on a regular windows mobile 6.1 phone. Keep in mind that this is verry new so it has virtually no customization and absolutely no gui it will just be an executable.
Any help would also be much appropriated. I will give the source to anyone that wants it. And may set up an SVN repository.
*I will not be held responsible for any harm or damage that may occur as the result of this program. Just covering my ass.
Just keeping you posted.

Well here it is, so far. The plugin works and if anyone wants the code I made some classes that makes it easy to setup a plugin like this one and adds it to the registry. Otherwise the plug in is pretty self explainable, the only thing that i was unable to implement at this time is auto-updating of the homescreen. So once something has been completed, added, changed, or deleted all you have to do at the moment is press the middle button while viewing the task plugin.
Installation
1. extract copy the .exe to any directory on your phone
2. click on the exe to execute once then go to homescreen to see your tasks(by the way it only shows active tasks, implementation will be added later on to check what way you have them selected in the actual Tasks application that is bundled with Windows Mobile. I figured it would be alright for the time being.)
3. dont move the exe, but if you do move the EXE then remember to click it again to execute it so that it writes the new location to memory.
If there are any questions just post a reply.
*note: again i am not responsible for anything that may happen to your phone. If you have questions about anything i would be more than happy to assist you.
*note also: please post what you think of this plugin please, and if there are any suggestions or if anyone would like to lend a hand i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for making this, I've been looking for this forever. Just installed, and it displays fine on the screen. However, it would be nice if, like the 'appointments' panel, it would display a task even when not selected instead of just saying "tasks". Tasks scroll through just fine, and I can edit and create tasks, but the main problem is that when I click the middle button on a tasks, it brings up an error screen that says "cannot find CHome plugin (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct..." etc.

Great work, works correctly and very good for me on blackjack. Only issue(other than not auto refreshing,like you mentioned) was on the Create Task page. Seems like it would be better if actionurl also opened create task page like the sk2url does. I can change myself, so not a big deal.

Show a current task like the appointments panel - could definitly be implemented.
as far as the could not find CHome plugin or one of its components that may be a permissions issue because by default there is a security permission that disallows any use to an application without authorization from the user but i will most definitly look into it but please answer these questions to help me figure it out.
-where is the .exe stored?
-what carrier do you use?
-have you edited any of the security policy registry values?
-how many chucks could a wood chuck, chuck if.... just kidding.
remember the middle click refresh is just temporary until i get an email back about the POOM issue.

have you edited your security policies (HEKY_LOCAL/security/policy/policy)?
It seems to me the reason that schneid1224 is getting an error is because i leave the executable directory path in the ActionURL so that the user can refresh the homescreen without going to the exe. I think its because of permissions that it does not allow it to execute and so it just throws that error. But im still looking into it, when i get home ill reload my phone and check it out.

So here is a development release lets consider it version .0.0.0.5 because the code that is supporting it would make Chef Boy R Dee happy. But I tried to make a thread that checked the current list of tasks to an old list so that it would update only when changes have been made. Anyways I have succeeded after many hours of trying to figure out why i wasn't.
I found out that the sort method from the IComparable interface or one of those is not thread safe so i had to make implement my own bubble sorting so it should handle around a hundred or so tasks before it gets slower than it should. But i figured the person with over a hundred tasks has other software for managing them.
Anywhoo here is how the program works and please refrain from laughing...
just run the program like last time except this time it just runs in the back as a process checking the tasks every 10 seconds for changes and updating only when changes are made. Have not yet checked the efficiency of this program yet only because i just got some time to work on it. I digress....
okay run the program and if you want to stop the program you just make a task with the subject of "shutdown" excluding the quotes. Or just reboot your phone.
now the little "working..." icon will appear and its safe to back up to the home screen. im currently trying to find a way so that does not display.
Anyway another better more efficient release is coming once school ends and i get outta finals but this works for the moment and its what i need.
Peace im out for the night because its like 3:18am!
p.s. let me know if 10 second refresh is too much or not enough?
ccpraveen
18th November 2008, 12:46 PM
On a BJ2.
Going to test right now.
BTW, 10 second refresh seems a bit of overkill. Who creates a new task every ten seconds? And even if someone has that many tasks, as you yourself stated earlier, wont they use a full fledged task app?
I would prefer a ten minute or 15 minute refresh. Any idea how much this ten second refresh eats up the battery?
Well, just my two cents
Unknownman
18th November 2008, 04:03 PM
Not quite sure about the battery, i do know its pretty heavy on the resources as of now but im working on that a little later on when i have some free time. I could change it to 15min or make it so you could interface with the API and change it but again at a later time.
Unknownman
18th November 2008, 07:39 PM
Okay so i think i might want to start a new thread so that i can update the file instead of posting a new file everytime. Anyhoo i think the memory issue is adressed in this release
heh i think im the only one who could possible make a memory leak in managed code.... submitExcuse("I knew what i was doing but,It was because i was pissed off and just trying things to figure out how they worked");
private string submitExcuse(string excuse)
{
if(excuse.indexOf("I knew what i was doing") > -1)
{
return "alie";
}
}
be sure to shutdown the currently running program before starting this one otherwise im positive that you will get undesirable results...
how to shutdown -
create new task called "shutdown" case sensative then wait a few and check the current processes.
again if anyone wants to help or wants to assist i would be more than happy to give the source out.

It would be nice to have somekind of internal filter in your app, for Today, Tomorrow, and a Create Task Panel(it would be cool if one could control the category of the newly created task ie. Inbox or whatever the user designated be it via hklu\software\microsoft\chome\home), with those 3 I think most of us will be just fine as it will mirror the native Calendar Panel, that would rock dude.

define locking up? does it ever actually refresh or does it just sit there waiting...?
ccpraveen
19th November 2008, 07:43 AM
The lock-up is something inherent to my BJ2, after I installed NRG miniweather, and I its NOT ur task panel thats causing it.
Let me rephrase.
Whenever there is a major change in the homescreen, like say for eg, changing the colour scheme or changing the background, the screen gets frozen. All I can see is the lower taskbar and the wallpaper only. I have to either restart, or conveniently use the CHome Refresh option, inbuilt in the Miniweather (Chome Refresh is also avalilable as a standalone app) for the changes to be shown again.
This is happening here as well. Means, when I try and add a new test task, dated today, within ten seconds, it refreshes and tries to repaint the WHOLE homescreen and not just the panel, right? Thats where my original problem shows its ugly head. The whole screen goes blank with just the wallpaper and the lower taskbar.
So I will have to manually refresh either via reboot or chome refresh.
That is why I was interested in having an app that refreshes ONLY THAT PANEL and not the whole screen.
BTW, your app rocks. For a starter, you have gone miles ahead. Keep up the good work, congratulations.
Oh BTW, when I do a manual refresh, the newly added task is shown properly. No worries there. And unless I dont change the task entries again, this problem doesnt arise again.
Unknownman
19th November 2008, 06:18 PM
There is a way to do this through native code but it would take a whole lot more learning than i am willing to do right now. This may be a consideration once my classes are done, if someone takes it upon themselves to create some sort of dll that can interoperate with managed code, or if anyone knows how to register the panel and refresh only that panel. on another note: the line of code that refreshes the homescreen takes a GUID, and since each panel is assigned a GUID it makes me believe that it may be possible through managed code already. I just dont know how to properly register the panel to do this... ill search the msdn and see what i can come up with.
also might i suggest a master reset because once i installed NRG and uninstalled it i got a continual error about weather.exe not found and could not execute and then some other errors. Im not sure how they did things but it made my machine goofy so i had to do a master reset. Of course i Sync'd all of my contacts, appointments, and tasks before i did the master reset because it sets everything to default and you will loose all of that data.

I installed it on my bj2 and it looks great and it showed the task in the first panel but when I selected it, it took me to another task, also as I went thru the panel, some of my tasks had dates like 01/15/4015 and stuff like that, weird.

i noticed that, and i have made changes... when you make a new task the default end date is in the year 4015 or something similar like that.... simply a display issue and i have fixed it along with the task that is due today. where it displays that the task is due today Due at: 00:00 now it just displays Due Today.

sure im currently not close to my computer but i will post the new zip file around 8:30 pm (CST) because i have to work.
i also added the checking thread to check to see if a new day has passed so it will refresh each new day so that the days due will stay updated.
im going to make a website for this because posting these files like this is completely unorganized.

Set up your own thread as you can always change the revision in the first post when you have updates, then you could link to the website for more info :)

can you post the source? do you need visual studio to update the code or just the .net lib?

Most recent Version:
It looks great and displays the right task but when you go to edit them it won't jump to the right task, it always jumps to the first task. Also I have some templates from Pocket Informant that use the date 12/31/2999, my request is if something can be programmed to hide dates that are not within the next 100 year, so that these types of virtual task let's call them don't show up,

I had to remove this... too many weird things happening.
The homescreen would refresh and end up blank, which necessitated using the refresh tool in mini weather.
Also, Chome Config always gave an error message twice upon starting, but now it does it three times.

now i know that this may make me sound arrogant but i don't believe that its my application i believe that it is the other 3rd party applications that are installed on your machine. The errors that you get when booting up Chome Config are errors because you may not have the correct permissions set. And i believe that the weather applications are written in native code and are not refreshing the whole home screen when some new data needs to be displayed. Thus they do not follow the conventional means of refreshing the home screen which in turn means that they are exploiting some part of the system to make their application do what they want. And this can make errors occur when someone tries to follow the conventional way.
With that said... if someone would be able to point me in the direction of a library or a way that would be able to refresh only the panel instead of the entire homescreen im sure that my application would be able to live peacefully with NRG and other applications.

I totally agree with unknownman.
What karelj has posted has EXACTLY happened with me too. TWO error messages before beginning, blank homescreen, and failure to refresh. And it is NOT because of unknownmans task panel. Hopefully waiting for better finer harmony between apps in the future. And congratulations once again to unknownman for his bold attempt, and continuing success in his endeavour

hey unkownman.,
love this app. Its perfect for the task support that I need.
a few things I'm wondering about:
1. when the panel above task apps is selected it counts too many tasks (counts actual tasks plus 'create task')
2. why are there two parts that say create task
3. the right button either can do edit or new task, but it goes to the same window. is there a difference, or can there be? just curious.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2958284 is now the page that will host any updates. Please post there now.
1. It should not be showing everything plus the add task, but update should fix that.
2.not sure what you mean by "two parts that say create task"?
3.That is a known issue and i am working on figuring it out but I am not sure if there is a way to send that information to Tasks.exe. I am looking into it.
Remember-
Please leave any questions or posts on the new thread so i can post updates in an organized mannor. Thanks.
