Very interesting. Just for a goof I asked him what rom version he's running. Anyone want to bet that he won't answer? He says it's a DIAM160, which i guess is an o2 model.

EDIT: He was reading the model number off of the battery itself, not the device model number.
He says his rom version is : 1.37.415.1.WWE

So what does that mean?

It could theoretically mean (i'm doubting this myself) that there is a way to unlock the 3g 850 band somehow. Now, he could have somehow gotten his hands on one of the telstra diam110 handsets, or he does have some kind of beta handset that does have different hardware.

Dunno. On my Danish (factory stock) rom, with radio 1.00.25.05 from here. In settings/phone/band I get not 4, but 6 options:
UMTS(900+2100)+GSM(900+1800)
UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900)
UMT(800+2100)
UMTS(850+2100)+GSM(900+1800)
UMTS(850)+GSM(900+1800)
UMTS(1700)

That would be bands 850, 900, 1800, 1900 for GSM
and 850, 900, 1900, 2100, 1700 for UMTS

Can't test it (yet)
Anyone, for donating a ticket DK-USA

EDIT: My ROM is -HTC Touch Diamond-QMR-RUU_Diamond_HTC_Danish_1.93.403.2_radio_Signed_Dia mond_52.29.25.12_1.00.25.05_Ship downloaded from HTC site.
My Diamond is DIAM100

But all of that is just on the software, it is not hardware.

I wonder if the hardware is already there, and it would only be up to a software to make the US 3G bands work.

Yeah I get the same^ on mine with Norwegian ROM and .05 radio.
BTW, after I hang up a call, the 3G sign tends to appear (replacing the E) for a few seconds, so faking those pictures in that auction wouldnt be tough.

But for the 3G symbol to appear, you need the hardware that can receive the band of the 3G signal, in the US case, it's 850/1900mhz

So you're saying the phone does have that hw?

Folks, if you just read around the forum a little bit you will see that the Euro/Asian Diamond DOES NOT HAVE THE HARDWARE TO SUPPORT ATT 3G DATA. Only the Australian version (just released) and the US version (to be released in September) have the hardware necessary to connect to WCDMA/UMTS 850. This information is ALL over this forum.

That's the question. I do believe it to be some kind of hoax, but we've all been surprised before. I'm hoping that the winner of the phone will come forward and dump the radio off the phone so we can find out once and for all.

In his auction Q&A's he says the radio version is 1.00.25.05 which has definitely been tried here. It would have to be different hardware.

The more I read his Q&A's, the more I think he's not intentionally trying to dupe anyone... he just doesn't understand that just because the software shows all those bands in the settings, doesn't mean the phone actually supports all those bands.

Look at the pictures, how come does he have the 3G signal in it? My diamond does not show that because it does not have the hardware for that, it only shows an E.
I thought that meybe is a preproduction unit, he claims that is not, but if you dig a bit you can see that this person bought it from a different seller who claims that is a regular dia100 so I'm very confused now.
Is it possible to change the logo to 3G with some registry tweak even if the phone only onnects to Edge?

He has confirmed now that it is a DIAM100, but swears up and down that it works for 3G data. I told him that people here have been trying to get 3G data working on the DIAM100 for a couple weeks now with the exact radio that he has on his phone and it cannot be done b.c the hardware is not there. He basically told me that it has 3G for 850 and to eff off. :)

I see you got yourself a $200 Diamond. Very nice! Regardless of whether it works on 3G data in the US, you can't beat that price for ANY Diamond!

This is true. Now who won the device? If you can confirm that the device is in fact a diam100 and it does actually works on at&t 3g, the rom and radio will need to be dumped so others on at&t can try. I'm on T-Mobile, so I don't think I will be able to help. :)

Good luck.

I won this auction but the auction was cancelled, the seller told me that he tried flashing a different rom and he lost the 3G so he cancelled the auction.
IF this is true, it looks like the 3G was a software issue not hardware, but I highly doubt it because he had the 05 radio, unless the rom that he had made a difference.
It's a very weird case because it seems that the 3G issue is hardware related, I'm confused.

This has been covered many times, the president of HTC said they removed the MicroSD as well as the US UMTS radio to make the Diamond smaller. That's why it's only 900/2100. Can't be the same hardware as you have, unless it's BS.

Oh, that's a bummer... even though I'm sure it did NOT have 3G, it sure would have been quite a bargain to get any kind of Diamond for 200 bucks!

The red flag for me on this auction was a couple of his answers to the Q&A's in the auction, particularly one where he said the phone supports ALL bands for GSM and WCDMA. We all know that no Diamond has all the hardware to support all bands. He was basing this claim on the bands that showed as available in the Band tab under settings. But if you read through the Diamond Radios thread in the Diamond ROM Development subforum, you'll see that several ATT US folks have the same thing on theirs, but that meant nothing regarding what bands they could actually connect to... that's hardware-dependent.

I think the seller guy was misinformed by the person he bought it from (also on Ebay), and he just didn't know the depth of info on this phone like us xda-developers-obsessed folks do. I don't think he was intentionally trying to mislead anyone.

Yes, thats the bottom line. The fact that he canceled the auction proves that.
One question: When the US Diamond comes out, will it work as well as the EU/Asia Diamond in Europe?

Assuming your Diamond is a GSM Diamond, the only other carrier that it could work with at all would be T-Mobile (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). Unfortunately, no, you can't get 3G on T-Mobile either.

Even then, T-Mobile operates on its own 1700 mhz 3G band. Other 3G phones that work in the US will not work with T-Mobile 3G, as most triband 3G phones only come with radios that support the 2100, 1900, and either 900 or 850 bands. No fun at all. It looks like only T-Mobile US phones will support T-Mobile's USA 3G. :(

Hmmm I see. Then why would anyone wanna get Tmobile.
Will the US version of the Diamond be available for sale to anyone without a plan though? If so I might just get that one, use it with my AT&T plan, and sell my EU Diamond (in Europe).

Thanks!

You realize with the new Schaps advancedconfig you can make your carrier show with 3G next to their name? So you could manually change it to say "AT&T 3G" right there...

T-Mobile USA is still cheaper than AT&T, so I guess if you never plan to leave the country, it makes sense. Still, some of us don't have that luxury.

I'm guessing that you could probably find the US version of the Diamond unlocked once it comes out here, either through ebay or expansys.

Cool, thanks. Any idea whay a new unlocked US Diamond will run for without a plan? I will be staying in the US for a year, but maybe not longer than that. So signing up for a two year plan with Tmobile is not an option. Btw, how is 3G coverage on Tmobiles and Verizons networks?

Make sure you get the model number if you can. He could be selling the exclusive DIAM110. I've been thinking about this and the only way I can figure that these 3g european model diamonds are working on at&t 3g is that a radio has been ported from the AT&T touch pro. (since theoretically they're supposed to have the same radio hardware) I asked someone with a preproduction raphael to dump their radio for me so i could try to get it flashed on my diamond, but got the normal "The diamond does not have the correct hardware" line. I'm not really in the mood to argue about things, so I did not proceed further. Looks like it's been dumped anyway, so i'll scour the raphael forum and see if anyone's done it yet.
