I am a TYTN II owner and I'm well chuffed with that device. I had a Touch Pro delivered today and I have to say I'm thoroughly underwhelmed. The performance seems pretty sluggish and the browser rendering experience is poor. So I have to say right now mine will either go back to the supplier or will end up on Ebay. It's a shame as I really wanted to like the experience on this device.

Oh the irony! Was your TYTN II as good on its first day as it is today. I have just joined today so as to get help with my new Touch Pro, when it arrives.
Why are you on this forum if you cant wait for others to help with any issues you have discovered with the Touch Pro?

...but can you elaborate a little more? By "pretty sluggish" do you mean, the TouchFlo 3D, running apps, loading the menus, the camera...just what?
...by "browser rendering experience is poor" do you mean, using IE, loading web pages (which ones?), are you connected with 3G/HSDPA...just what?
More info would help us all...
Thanks.

It's not a case of not being bothered I just have to say that the experience is poor in my opinion and others who also have lived the windows mobile dream. I really like the hardware but hate the software experience and at 500 quid I'm not willing to gamble on a device experience I don't like, I'll run with my gut on this one.

TouchFlo is relatively OK performance wise.
Going under the covers to Windows Mobile 6.1 is where it starts to fall apart.
The Browser in use is Opera and yes when connected to HSDPA on a variety of sites including www.bbc.co.uk/news, www.wikipedia.org, www.coolsmartphone.com and others.......

Fair enough. Doesnt rank as my best ever first post on a forum :D . I know what you mean, but I am semi-tied to getting a WinMobile device due to owning a Slingbox. Otherwise it would have been a Nokia E71.

TMobile and 3.6 (although in reality that never means more than 800Kps).
I don't think it's connection speed, I think it's the conversion/rendering of the pages into a "desktop browser" format.

Just general performance really. Watching this piece of hardware struggle under Windows Mobile 6.1 trying to keep up with going from landscape to portrait, the aforementioned browser issues and just general speed brings a tear to my eye. Again I really wanted to like the experience but I have to be honest to my first impressions and they are not good.

Wouldn't theoretical maximum for 3,6 MBps be 0,45Mbps, half a meg per second. Also when you state that "when you go under the covers", do you find that you were dissappointed with the WM6.1 OS?? Didn't you already say you were coming from TYTN II, which means you knew perfectly what to wait for. Why so disappointed then.

..and also, don't lose hope just yet. It was only released yesterday. No software is yet well optimized for it, nor the OS is optimized. So it will improve greatly. :) Just you wait.

Because this fine piece of hardware is sluggish under Windows Mobile 6.1. This is obviously only my own opinion of my own experience, your mileage may vary but bottom line is I'm not happy with how this thing runs.

Nope I'm done with it. It shouldn't be this hard out of the box.
Again the focus of my disappointment here is the software not the tin.

T-Mobile vanilla Windows Mobile 6.0 ROM and it's just good. (Yes I've used non-vanilla, ROMS on other devices e.g TYTN I and seen 'em improve performance.) Maybe I'm just not willing to live that pain on a software config a hardware manufacturer has released directly.

Sorry I did not get the point here. Is it too slow or is it not able to render the websites correctly?
I'm currently using the leaked Diamond version of Opera on my TyTN and so far I'm quite happy with it. The higher display resolution might of course consume some extra CPU power, but on the other hand the Touch Pro CPU itself is more powerful then the TyTN one.
It's always difficult to compare different user experiences because everyone has different expectations, so I would really appreciate if you could go a little bit more into detail. :)

Slower to load/render the pages.
I hate to use the iWord but compared to a 2G iPhone with it's browser/slower connection its a poorer experience (no I don't own an iPhone).

Well, it's bad news alright.
Really wanted to work for a while with official till the cookers get a true hold of it.
Seems like I'm flashing the 1st ROM.
Who am I kidding, I was goin to flash anyway:)
Dude, I think you should give it a week.
Try hard resetting maybe
I remember my TyTN II needed that badly

what a loser! hah! :P I'd like to see something more concrete to justify the trash you just tossed in, I've used the diamond, and apart from the battery life, i really think its a great device! And the touch pro with an awesome keyboard, expandable mem, more ram/rom can only make it cooler!
Also, i think this is too much heat so damn quickly to be true! I can barely believe what you are mouthing off out here, doubt even if you got hold of a device in the first place!
U also seemed to claim that you had a tytn, and no way on earth is the TP going to be slower and crappier than that.....dont waste ur time m8, u aint proving any point....and it isnt so cool to act all negative!

a) I am not a loser.
b) I am not a liar - I got the device today, see the attached .jpg. I have previously owned a TYTN I and currently still have a TYTN II.
c) The performance of the device is part dependent on the software implemented on it, so you're wrong there.
d) I am proving no point - I am offering the benefit of my experience. Take it or leave it but dont bad mouth someone you don't know. You wouldn't do it in the street or maybe you would but it wont earn you friends. Show a bit of respect to your fellow forum posters.
One final thing on the hardware aspect of things I did find that after using 3G for 10 mins or so that the device was much warmer than the TYTN II.

Experience, what experience?
I think the point is, is that many people here (as far as I am aware, as I am new) have spent thousands of collective hours to improve these products, and you feel it appropriate to post on the same site and claim that after a few minutes use it aint worth it and by inference the rest of us should not bother? I sympathise with your frustration, but no need to unload so quickly. Why dont you show some respect to the community (of which I am not part yet) by allowing others to help? Presumably thats why you posted here?
Guess I am wasting my breath. . .hohum

I've stated my motives, i.e. sharing my experience (come now I've actually got the device !) and to be frank it doesn't take long to get a gut feel for whether something is working for you or not. It hasn't for me but that doesn't mean it wont for you or others. If the forum doesn't want opinions posted then maybe it should state so in the forum rules, sorry it's not what some want to hear but hey we are all different.
As for my not showing respect that is untrue, otherwise I wouldn't bother posting polite responses when I've been called a liar.

I think for now I'll stick with the TYTN II but will keep an eye out for other platforms. I'm really hoping that Windows Mobile 7 when available will pull something out of the bag and optimise the whole Windows Mobile experience. Again I'm a fan of the HTC hardware itself, they build good kit, it's the underlying OS which needs sorting (esp the browser).

When was the last time Microsoft optimised a new version of their software?? Generally you need to greatly increase your hardware to be able to use Microsoft software. (I am of course generalising and mainly talking about their desktop software). Still, I reckon it is very unlikely that WM7 will perform better on the same hardware as WM6.1.

I express a hope not a fact ;) Microsoft are great at marketing less than stellar software but let's be frank from an mobile o/s point of view their market position is getting squeezed by others whose interface is perceived by some of Joe Public to be the slicker proposition. Microsoft need to show they are hungry to regain ground here. I am not however holding my breath.

Totally agree. Maybe M$ need another acquisition, to provide well honed skins, that can be "bundled" with the Mobile OS. Still M$ need to put their s/w on a major diet, and add some fun/style. Easy to comment on, very hard to create I imagine. Maybe M$ should consider completely rebranding their mobile division?

Android is Googles mobile operating system. It isn't released yet on any phones however there are rumors that HTC will be the first manufacturer to provide a phone running Android OS. This phone is currently known as the HTC Dream and should be released Q4 this year. Android is developed with openness in mind, there is a full SDK available and development can be performed in Eclipse, an emulator is also provided to allow new programs to be tested and debugged.
Hope this gives you a quick overview.

Hmmm sounds interesting, although for some reason think Google are becoming too large? Is it more WinMobile, Linux, or Symbian oriented. None of them? Oh dear. Just thinking about current applications available for mobile devices.

It is more linux oriented I would say. My understanding is that the development language is VERY similar to java. Other applications would not be cross-compatible however I think if it takes off most major mobile software companies would produce applications for it.

I posted a video of my Touch Pro the first day with TouchFlo3D, and it didn't seem "sluggish" at all (even before all of the tweaks I've now applied). Maybe AT&T changed something around with their ROM, but even factory spec I saw no real issues.
