View Full Version : TILT With US TMobile 3G

Hey Everyone!
Apparently, T-Mobile US is launching their 3G in my area (Minneapolis, MN) next week! I was wondering if there is any way possible to make my currently ATT Tilt to work with it?
When I was underground in a parking ramp, my phone showed 3G symbol, but did not connect to anything (not even able to call out). I dunno if that would help any.
Thank you in advance! :)

You'll need your phone to be SIM unlocked and then setup the connection settings for tmobile 3g for 3g internet access. Don't get too excited. the battery life on 3g sucks. I've disabled it on AT&T.

I believe the answer that you're looking for is that the Tilt does not support the 1700MHz band.

It's not going to work on T-Mobile's 3G network.. T-Mobile uses 1700mhz band.

Yup that's why HTC is making a KAIS140. Its Probably going to be Marked the T-Mobile "Slant" or something. :p

I do believe that it is possible to enable 1700mhz with a software.
Diamond had 850Mhz enabled with a radio rom update. And if you will look at Kaiser FCC date sheet it was tested for 1700mhz.
So what i think is wan HTC wilt release Kaiser with 1700nhz for T-mobile, it will be possible to use that radio rom for all Kaiser and Polaris.

Get a different Radio or ROM (better both) and you can have 3G on all day and still will have power left when it's getting dark outside.
Radio adv.: NEON or NIKI, will help to speed up your GPS as well.
For editing the connection (auto setup AND edit) use HTC_CONNECTION_SETUP_V1_0_31758_7 (look around my upload failed).

Notes:
Technically cingular.wap doesn't require username and pw, works fine w/o.
CHECK PROXY SETTING AFTER YOU RAN IT (default is proxy ON better set it OFF).

Anyone know if it will be possible to unlock that frequency VIA radio update??

I hate to bump this post after so long, but I just got off the phone with T-mobile and they said they are supporting 1700 and 1900 for 3G bands. The kaiser supports 1900 as-is at the very least. This means once they're done, it *should* work. We will see, but I have hope for the AT&T Tilt users.

The simple answer is no, the tilt or any other 3g phones will not work on T-Mobile new 3G network. Phone reps usually don't know what the hell their talking about. The phone will work on T-Mobile as it does now, at Edge speeds. The new T-Mobile 3G network doesn't match up with any other network in the world, so you have to wait for T-Mobile to roll out some 3G smartphones. The new network runs on 1700 and 2100MHz bands.

From a 3g phone on t-mos website:
Band (frequency): 850 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz
its matches the 1800 and does not mention the 1700.

Here's something a little strange for anyone reading this post.
I have a TYTN II unlocked straight from Dubai. I bought it before the Tilt was available in the US. I upgraded to the new WM 6.1 Rom when it came out. I was disappointed to hear the Tmobile isn't supporting any 3G frequencies that the TYTN II supports. I am also using a 5 year old SIM card, not that it makes much of a difference. Well here's where this little story gets interesting.
I live about 15 minutes outside of Washington DC. Yesterday I was in Baltimore for a photo shoot. When I got back in to the DC area I went to have drinks with a friend who is on AT&T and had a Tilt. After drinking a beer or two I decided to check my email. Lo and behold at the top of the screen I have a little "E" symbol but next to it where I have the signal indicator I had a little "3G" next to it. I know I wasn't roaming and I was down the street from my house. So obviously we decided to try a webpage I'd never been to that was image heavy to test the "3G" out. The page loaded up very fast and event my friend said it seemed like it was "3G".
I'm not trying to get anyone's hopes up but I thought I'd share.
oh yeah, I also disconnected the connection and reconnected and I still get the "3G" I haven't done a soft reset yet because I'm really liking the speed. lol :D

i have the unlimited data plan. I ended up having to soft reset my phone and I no longer get the little 3G symbol. I did however get to check on the speed of it using one of those websites. Normally with EDGE I get roughly 80-95kbps when I check with the little 3G I got 171kbps. So my question is how/why did my phone pick up the 3G and am I able to get it to do it again.

since the device supports the 2100 band sholdnt it work, all the reps that i talked to said the 3g works on the 2100 band. WE HAVE THE 2100, this should work only if u could activate it under settings/phone band tap... which i cant

Actually I do care if it works. My TYTN II is possibly the worst HTC phone I've ever owned. I'm not a fan of companies that get over hyped ad space or mention. Unfortunately for me the TYTN II was one of those phones. Now if I could use the 3G portion of the phone it would probably be a much better phone.
So while I care I'm still saving my pennies for the HTC DREAM G1

Nope. I paid the big bucks for an unbranded phone. I found out very recently that one of the apps I had to use was causing serious memory leak issues. That one thing really screwed me up. It's ok though I picked up a HTC Dream and even though it's really watered down compared to a WM phone I like the interface better.
I've lent my TYTN II to someone who will get full use out of it. We are both happy. lol

lol, sorry.
I think it was either the:
m:metrics meter
batti meter by Andri something or other
JVUS Album
Sprite Backup (which ever version came with the phone)
I noticed with a fresh ROM the phone was blazingly fast. Add on a few apps and the phone couldn't even rotate the screen without slowing down so much.
I think it was how the apps interacted with each other.

This seems sort of relevant to my question - I have a Universal, and as far as I can tell, it only supports 3G over UMTS 2100, which those of us in the US apparently don't have access to, something to do with AWS/UMTS/W-CDMA 1700.
But... I've heard some reports of people using supposedly 2100-3G-only phones and getting 3G connection in the US, even a Universal. So, what's the deal? I was told on the phone by a T-Mobile rep that 2100 and 1700 should work, so... Huh. You know? I'm not sure what to think.

See this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2937278) thread. T-Mobile will be using both 2100 and 1700 mhz for their 3G network in the US, so in some cities soon you should be seeing 3G connectivity with foreign-3G-capable phones here in the US. From what I understand, anyway, despite what that (quite useful, thanks) visual guide to AWS says.

I saw the 3G icon again briefly today. Might just be some kind of software anomaly that is causing it to appear randomly.
This brings up a question I haven't seen anyone else ask or answer:
With my AT&T branded Tilt that is unlocked and working on T-Mobile should I change any settings in network? I simply unlocked it and inserted my T-Mobile sim and off I went merrily connecting to the internet and making T-Mobile calls.
Are there specific T-Mobile network settings I should have in this thing?
I'm on an unlimited data plan that I've had since 2004. (had a Pocket PC Phone Edition WM2003)

I'd like to get a definitive answer, if possible. There is a lot of back and forth on this thread about overlapping frequency requirements, SIM card restrictions and other issues that could be preventing use of the Tilt on the T-Mobile 3G network. Could someone take the time to post a grammatically correct response to the questions below?
1. Does the AT&T Tilt's frequency capabilities overlap with T Mobile's 3G network frequency?
2. Does a T Mobile SIM need to be "upgraded" or replaced from a previous (EDGE-capable) version in order to provide user access to the T Mobile 3G network?
3. Can the phone's ROM be updated to provide access to the network frequencies used by T Mobile, but not natively supported by the AT&T Tilt (e.g., 2100)?
4. When you pop the T Mobile SIM into the phone it pretty much sets itself up automatically. Are there additional settings changes that a user should manually make to optimize/maximize the phone for the T Mobile (3G) network?
Not trying to be rude - I'm just trying to get to the bottom of things. This is a really great forum with a ton of amazing resources and a strong community, but sometimes it can be hard to filter out the misinformation and digressions.
Thanks for your help!

1. Does the AT&T Tilt's frequency capabilities overlap with T Mobile's 3G network frequency?
t-mobile UMTS/HSDPA network in the 1700/2100 MHz bands
ATT - 2100MHz and 850/1900 MHz where the first band is upstream second band downstream so I'd consider this a NO for true 3G network speeds
2. Does a T Mobile SIM need to be "upgraded" or replaced from a previous (EDGE-capable) version in order to provide user access to the T Mobile 3G network?
Most likely YES
3. Can the phone's ROM be updated to provide access to the network frequencies used by T Mobile, but not natively supported by the AT&T Tilt (e.g., 2100)?
NO - though a chipset may support all frequencies there is currently no knowledge that frequencies can be unlocked by software
4. When you pop the T Mobile SIM into the phone it pretty much sets itself up automatically. Are there additional settings changes that a user should manually make to optimize/maximize the phone for the T Mobile (3G) network?
Don't know BUT there is a cab called HTC Connection Setup which will take care of this (worst case proxy settings are wrong).
Not trying to be rude - I'm just trying to get to the bottom of things.

I'm running a Kaiser on T-Mobile and have been in an area where T-Mo has 3G. It won't connect because the band plans are entirely different. I can force "visability" to AT&T with manual network selection but can't authenticate (of course) - the 3G signal is definitely there and visible on the AT&T frequencies, but as far as I know the Kaiser simply doesn't have the necessary frequencies in the hardware to work on T-Mobile's AWS.
