Hi there,

at first: sorry for my bad english. :)

If've some problems with my HTC touch (Elf).

At first the problem:

-> It freeze in different programs, for e.g. on today screen, at new sms incoming, in a phone call, entering pin, and so on.
-> It freeze for 10-20 seconds, then it shut down OR it restarts
-> If it restarts, it freeze sometimes at "Smart mobility" or restarts new
-> If it shutdown, it can't start up for a while (30s - 1 min)
-> ^^ Press soft reset button a couple of times (3...4...5... times) helps
-> Remove and insert akku helps, too
-> The "Smart Mobility" Screen became sometimes a red background and a yellow font
-> Sometimes after the "Smart Mobility"-Screen comes a white screen.

What I've tested to solve the problem:

-> Hard reset
-> Update Radio Rom
-> Update ISPL/SPL
-> Try different Roms ("all" available)
-> Try the "pure" (original HTc9 rom without any installations

Now, some informations about my Elf:

-> Radio Rom 03.12.90 (ASerg_ELF_RADIO_ROM_03.12.90.rar)
-> IPL: 1.11.0002
-> SPL: 1.11.0000
-> Unlocked this IPL/SPL (to install new roms)
-> WM6 .11.407.1G_4.1.13.44_02.94.90 (RUU_Elf_HTC_GER_1.11.407.1G_4.1.13.44_02.94.90_GR EEN_Ship.exe)

So one. :( Is there anybody, who has an idea? :(

I have the same exact problem! Sorry for my bad english to:D!
Let's see if we can understand something about this problem..
I notice the problem is worst when it is hot (the weather, not the phone) and with high humidity, for example when I have the phone in the pocket of the pants.
I have the red start mobility screen to but I didn't find any info about it in internet, what does it mean?:confused:

I think this is a hardware problem, don't you?
I think I'll send it to assistance when I'll come back from holidays

Maybe something with battery? Some non-HTC phones had problems like freezing etc. caused by too low voltage on battery

That was that, what I'm thinking about at first. I've think when the problem does starts, and I think it starts, when I was an half an hour in a cold store with my Elf. The akku discharge very fast at the moment. I'll try a new akku.

same here... few weeks a go... random power offs.

few notes:
the phone cannot be turned on again only if the battery is remove for 2-3 secs and put back again

the phone clock freezes in this case. and i should set it again.

anyone having this problem?
i guess it a hardware issue

Yes the same here, my clock also freeze. I have to remove the battery but not all the time, sometimes it just need a soft reset.
Did someome already try to change the battery?
Nobody noticed that the problem is worst in the hottest part of the day and it gets better in the evening when it's colder?
Anyway, I have this problem since a couple of months and it's getting worst.:(

Its certainly Very warm here in Malta....
Shall I throw it in the pool.... Maybe thats the only solution.
But then What shall it be my next phone? Diamond... (reading only negative comments)

Hope to find a solution before the Pool Dive!

:(Bad news.. it's not the battery!
I have a friend that worked for a year in a assistance center, he told me that probably the problem is a condensator on the motherboard that it's not working, so nothing to do.. just warranty

Since i install the Battery Status my device working fine. I listen songs for 20-30 min. Also makes call. Its working alright. The temprarue remains from 30-35 C. But the variation in mA is very much. Like some time it indicate 21mA & some times it indicate 420mA. Also shows 190mA, 221mA. Those whose devices are woking fine do they have the same range of mA? or its different. One more this the changes in mA didn't change with the uses of device. I.E if u listen or make calls it rise or fall.

Updated IPL to 2.27.0002 & USPL to 2.28.0000 + Touch ESSentiaL V 1.7, no more freezing or rebooting or "Dark Standby" (Green light blinking as normal standby mode but can't turn on and no receiving calls, must soft reset or reinsert battery to turn on), battery lasts twice time and everything work faster.

i too had a htc touch but had to sell it because of this odd freezing because i had to miss too many important calls.i went to a service centre where they told me that there is a somekind of wire which connects motherboard to the battery when it passes power the device works fine but from little jerks and shocks in the pockets the wire doesnt passes power so the device shuts off

gronostaj
25th August 2008, 12:19 PM
It's possible and confirms my theory - when phone needs more power (in this case for enabling speaker), the wire can't handle it and phone freezes - battery voltage is ok, but mainboard voltage is too low.

Its not the problem of wire. Last night my phone battery was charged more then 50%. When i wake up in the morning the phone is off. Try to start but restart. Then i connect it with charger & after few min i power on again & see that battery is at 0%. Then after charging its start working. I notice that it works much better with battery status. When i uninstall battery status its keep on freezing & restating. But with battery status its works much batter not 100%. But freez 1-2 time in a day.

ghazi anwar7
29th August 2008, 03:19 PM
actually elf cant work with lid cover off.secondly its not a software problem that you install a software it works ok neither it is a battery problem because if you test the battery with a voltmeter it shows right voltage so in conclusion this is not a software problem that is solved by upgrading rom ipl or spl neither a battery one because i myself sold it after changing 3 batteries so this is a hardware problem

The same problem happen with me. The problem came after when I have set the password to unlock the device. I have set the "Prompt if device is not used for" to 12 Hours. Because I want to use the password when I mobile softreset or Switch On.

After doing this, my screen was Freeze, when I toggle screen with power button, It shows Blank other than Soft reset I dont have other option.

After removing the password prompt, the problem never come.

If anyone has noticed such problem, kindly help me out.

i already told u there is no solution to this whether you people change roms or change batteries this is concerned with the motherboard and this is unrepairable so try if htc gives you a replacement otherwise this problem will become worse day by day and lead to your htc touch being only a toy

So djmohit if you could please guide us as to exactly HOW you repaired the phone?
It's cent percent confirmed that it's the power wire issue, because it only happens when the SIM is inserted, and also happens AS SOON as the SIM is inserted while the phone is on...
Anybody knows anything where the wire is located and stuff like that?
This thing is coming up my nerves, I want to throw the phone away whenever it restarts, but then somehow I control myself :rolleyes:

I got the same problem before...
HTC support firstly reflash the firmware for me, but it freeze again when they test it in front of me,
and finally replace the mainboard of Touch for me.

The cause of the problem...hmm..mostly humidity since I use it as a music player when I am bathing...so..don't put it in high humidity area.

Here I am back!
I see there is a lot of confusion:
1) The problem is not the battery since I tried it with other batteries
2) The problem is just the same with or without the sim card
3) It definetly get worst with high temperature and high humidity
4) It freezes in every condition and with any program installed, I have battery status to
5) I also had sometimes the battery at 0% without any reason
6) I update IPL, SPL and rom with no luck
7) It must be a hardware problem because it restarts or freeze also before or just after the smart mobility logo comes out and because of the humidty relation
8) It get worst with the time

It could actually be the power button, maybe some bad contact, but can be everything else to:(

I had the phone. Bought it unlocked before it was in the USA. It worked for a month or two then it started freezing like two times a day, then the freezes occurred more frequently and for more things/uses on the phone. The reoccurrence finally went to about 2 minutes of being on before freezing, so I put it away for several months (like 6-8) then recently picked it up again hopping the hibernation fixed the problem. The phone ended up in the trash last week in many pieces. No joke. Just ordered the Enhanced. When it gets here I pray it will not be the same piece of junk.

Ghazi, You are absolutelly right!
I have tried everything, changing ROMS, updating IPLS, SPLS, MTLS TTLS... :-)
But the Htc still freezes and needs to restart. The crazy thing is that sometimes it is working fine for up to 2 days and some other times it restarts every 2 hours... have no explanation on this. :-(

So the only solution is a new mobile.. Will stay on HTC though.

Would you suggest a new one for replacement? Diamond, diamond pro? or ...

Thanks a lot

ghazi anwar7

And for the replacement question,i would like all of the people who want to stick to HTC-including me-should wait for the new devices to boost into asking before buying.wait around 1 month of release and then buy so that it doesnt happen again.

Thanks

Hey ,

I also have the same problem about my Phone freezing and what causes this problem is humidity + high temperatures . The problem occured in my phone when i traveled to India ( High humidity) i realized that my phone was frezing alot, at first i though it might be the new ROM update. However, when i came back home i sent to HTC service center and they CONFIRMED that it is a HARDWARE PROBLEM something wrong in the Motherboard, what wrong exactly i dont know. so i will be changing my mother board. cost me $330 :(

Same problem. How can partially solved it???

1. Change the SIM: freeze anyway.:(
2. Change the ROM: freeze anyway.
3. Etc, etc, etc.: freeze anyway.
4. Change again the ROM with the RUU_ELFin_DOPODASIA_WWE_2.20.707.1B_4.1.13.51_03.0 7.90_BLUE_Ship_Reduced.exe: freeze anyway.:mad:
5. Restore with my previous SPB Backup: almost work fine (1 or 2 rebooted).
6. Turne on the divice with the new SIM and with phone off.
7. One day with a simple PDA.:confused:
8. Power off the phone on night.
9. Power on at day.
10. And at 3rd day, allways Stay on the phone: and I have´t freeze for 5 days.

Maybe I´m lucky for a while.:D

As you say it's bad motherboard, it's confirmed but not (yet) proved. Error occurs due to bad thermal design and cheap(er) materials in production of the motherboard.

Due to (over)heat on some places on the motherboard the circuits, wires as you say, will get cracks and/or "cold solder joints" with component on motherboard. That's why problem is not always there. It will work until some pressure or movement forces the bad joint/circuit which then "makes crazy" the CPU or some other part of the motherboard. As end result you will get frozen screen, restart or empty battery (due to short circuit)

This kind of the problem is not just with this model but noticeable with almost all models of HTC, use search option on top of the page if you do not believe ;)

I would suggest that moderators create new poll or invitation for all HTC users with same issue and that we start legal procedure for free repair / device replacement even if device is out of warranty. This kind of action was success against Dell, Compaq, IBM, Toshiba and other laptop manufacturers with bad technical design or production quality. For example search for “Lundell Settlement” in Google.

hi guys,

After hearing all the problems and fighting the battle with my touch for it to turn back on , i guess ghazi anwar7 gave us the reason of the problem. There seems to be some thing loose in the motherboard.

I reasonly tested after being anoyed with the phone:mad:, where i hit the phone onto my palm, and it was a mirracle the phone started. Then i was so happy i jumped and excidently hit the phone with a slow hit to the wall. The phone was off again.

so i guess we can just change the hardware.. :(

dear MCXC i has the same prob and tried eve thing that is provided on net.
My phone is working fine now after changing its power IC.
first of all replace ur charger and it would be better if you avoid using charger, try to use USB cable.
if the problem still persists then go for IC replacment.

We still don't have solution for this? I'm experiencing the same problem with my Elf, but still im puzzled on whats really the problem. My Elf also restart and hard to turn it back on, also the battery heats up and drain faster than normal. when the phone is off then i plug my unit to the charger there'e no sign that it is charging, but when the unit turned on and i plug it on the charger it shows that it is charging. that's why im still confused if it is on software or hardware. but i think it also have a hardware problem due to the battery heats up. if you guys find out the solution please let us know. it would be a great help. thanks

Hi.
Same problem here with the device.
Today I took the Elf from a repair shop. They told me that it was a hardware problem and the only solution was to heat the components inside. They told me that is a 50% chance that the phone could die. I agreed to try to repair it.
Today when I went to take back the phone, they said that it's dead...no other explication.
When the screen goes on, it says: "Test only" "Not for sale" and in the upper left corner are 4 red written rows:
IPL 2.11.1002
SPL 2.11.1000 MFG
GSM 02.98.90
OS 2.11.0.0 MFG

That means that they tryed to solder some components, or some vias at the Multi-PCB are broken. Now that is a very good tip for me. Now i just have to find out wich part has to be resoldered. Did somebody tryed to measure the charge current, while it is connected to the charger?
Is there somebody who could make some pics from a repaired board? So we can look for hardware-changes after a repair...
