There is a registry key.... not sure which one..... do a search. I know this has been addressed.

This didn't work?
Opera has a "set as default browser" option:
Menu>tools>Settings>Misc tab> check "set opera as default browser"
Else
To set any browser as the default one
open a registry editor
point to HKCR
and the extensions that you want the new browser to open:
htmlfile
http
https
ftp
url
xml
go to shell\open\command\default
For opera9 modify into:
"OperaL.exe" %1
it should be the same for other browsers
