hi there,
I have my diamond for almost a week now. On the first day everything worked fine. The gps got a fix, took it a while but it worked. On the second day of playing with it i decided i wanted to try a cooked rom.
I installed hardSPL (oliNex 1.40) and then tried dyttys 1.8 rom. All worked fine except for the GPS. It wasn't even finding it (the nav soft nor the gps test tool).
So i upraded the radio to 08 (in duttys rom it's 07). Same thing.
Next thing was installing panosha's shine on 1.5 rom (including radio 08).
Then i actually managed to see the gps, but it couldn't get a fix. So i tried radio 05. The gps was found but no fix... after hard reset once i got a fix, which took really long time, like 5-10 minutes. After next reboot nothing... Even the gps was not seen by the apps.
Now I'm on panosha's shine on 1.6 (still radio 05). Now the apps can see the gps, but it won't fix.
What to do? Try another hardspl? try another rom? try another radio? maybe try some tweaks?
Or maybe the gps is broken? But it worked!
Help me out please guys.

It think it has nothing to do with the hardSPL but u could try olinex 1.93
For roms, try swiftBLs or maybe christonges ct.

DragillaWell well well, there seems to be some problem...
I have exactly the same: no GPS fix but still seeing the sats, then no sats anymore.
I installed Dutty's 1.8 too yesterday and after that CT's.
Now back to a stock ROM including Stock SPL, but no GPS anymore...
I'm afraid I have to send my device for repair.
What do we have in common? We both flashed Dutty's 1.8, we both changed radio's (I went from .08 to .05).
Are there more victims out there???

look here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=421095)... i will try this now :)
Don't know how about you... but it worked for me. ..at least for now. I got a fix.
Try it - soft reset your gps!

After every ROM flash, you need to cold boot your GPS.
This is why the first time you have to wait 5-10 minutes to get a fix.
You can always use HTC GPS Tool or any similar app to cold boot.

ok, it helped only for a while. I then installed skype, google maps, maybe something else, synced with outlook and now gps cannot be found. Even by htc_gps_tool. It now says "failed to send NMEA command".
GPS Test scans ports and stops at com4 (this is the gps port)... and nothing happens. Hard reset of the device does not help.
Any ideas? Just 1h ago gps seemed to work :)

Do you have AGPS enabled? If so, disable it.
I WOULD recommend to start everything from the beginning:
1: flash a radio (.08)
2: flash a vanilla ROM (DON'T install anything else apart from HTC GPS tool)
3: Try getting a fix with this setup. We'll then know if it's a hardware problem or just your fiddling.

So don't touch the hardspl? If it works it works and i shouldn't change it?
What do you mean by "a vanilla rom". Any rom with vanilla=tflo3d? If so, what if this rom has radio in it (dytty's 1.8 has radio 07).
ps: how to change agps setting? I used pocket toolman now... had to install it... and guess what: agps was off. I turned in on rebooted and turned it off again. Didn't help.
Thanx for the interest in my problem :) Awaiting further instructions.

I have tested a bit this night. Flashed duttys 1.8, tried and it works, installed loads of apps and tried again and there it is, no gps fix.
I did a hard reset and flashed the .05 radio and then swiftBLs 6.0 lite rom. Nothing, no gps fix. Did another hard reset and flashed an official rom, and it works normal. Another hard reset and back to swiftBLs rom and got no problems.
atm i´m so lol

My device goed back for repair.

I'm sure soft reset of gps would help.
I just did new radio flash + new rom flash + soft reset of gps and it worked.
The I was installing my packages + configuring my device doing reboot after each small change to see if gps still works. It stopped working after installing win6voip.cab
Will try again to verify that :)

I had the same prob. And even when i had a fix it loses the fix and then it fixed agian so on and so on. Had it with igo8 and tom tom 7 and a smal program to see gps reception.
I switched back to radio .05 and used rom sc (skippycentraal) v2.8 (dutch language, is perfect for me cause i'm from holland )
I't works perfect, in about 20 to 30 sec outside getting a fix.
sometimes i'll even get a fix indoors :)

I think its a problem with the roms with the new radios, but the reason for the gps problems itself is affected by some applications.

Ummm a bit worrying..... I must admit after frying my Hermes with a new radio and then my Polaris after flashing a compatable radio from another device I´m a little vary now. I´ve stuck with .05 for a while now and I´ve been flashing between 5-10 times a day for the last few weeks and TomTom has been fixing everytime no issues whatsoever.

Use htc gps tool. Use function->chip->Q7200, set baud rate and port and click "open port". Next use function->set mode->cold start and get outside for 10 minutes with the device configured not to shut down/go to sleep (power settings). It should get a fix.
Back to my case: I flashed again and did the gps cold start. Then installed all the stuff I wanted + configured everything checking if gps is still getting a fix after each install/reboot. It still does. Ofcourse this time I did not install win6voip.cab. So I guess this package was the one "spoiling" my gps.
Will try to tweak my voip in win manually tomorrow. Hope it works because I have a SIP account I would like to use on my diamond.

God damn it...
everyone keeps flashing ROMs etc and I thought it was safe, I have exactly the same problem as pietrucci
and now I read that flashing everything back to stock doesn't fix the GPS ...
that REALLY PISSES ME OFF
there seems to be no information on how to properly "restart" the GPS so to make it work.
also from a technical point of view, how can you possibly "break" the GPS by installing hardSPL and another ROM, without even touching the Radio?
this problem better get a fix somehow and lets hope we (me, pietrucci and evilskanker) are able to fix it, or I will stop flashing untested shit altogether. it's fun as long as it works, but if someone reports a problem that is suddenly an exception, then things start to get quite a bit less safe as you see!
just my 2 cents.

Hi.
I don't know how Qualcomm GPS works, but users of Eten X650 are having same problem. (My previos phone was X650, SirfStarIII) After some reflashing GPS is broken. We make it working by dispacing battery from phone for 36 hr. So all GPS settings were reset. Someone ever short-circuit contacts of battery on the phone for this time. Try this if everything didn't help before going to service.

What do you mean by short-circuit the battery contacts, just hold a piece of iron on the phone contacts? Or do something with the battery itself? Doesn't that damage the device or battery?
By the way: I'm can't tell for sure my broken GPS was caused by flashing. But it was right after my last flash (Dutty v1.8) that is was dead. Everything I did after that (flashing to other ROMS, to stock ROMS, hardresets, GPS resets) was to try to get life in my GPS. But as you know now, without any effect.
All in all I believe it has to do with flashing but not 100% sure...

thanks sepa for the information
looks like this flashing fest just turned into a nightmare.
I'll take my battery out and see what happens.
For your information:
- Before flashing ROM&SPL I had SPL 1.93 and ROM 1.93.407.1 (German)
- GPS stopped working after I did my first flash: hardSPL 1.40 developer + panosha Shine On 1.6 ROM
- I didn't flash the radio. It's still the same that came with the phone: 1.0.25.05
- I bought the phone in Switzerland
- Symptoms: My GPS does sometimes see the satellites as shown in the HTC GPS Tool, but I get no signal from them (only the first bar at '30' and that's it). Of course, no application manages to properly get the GPS to work.
I think it is VERY strange that the GPS doesn't get it and I think it must be impossible that we damage it by just upgrading the ROM.
Maybe some tech here that knows how the Diamond works can shed some light on this behavior on day.
I'll keep you informed.
UPDATE:
User evilskanker reported the same problem

I've encountered the same problem with GPS after flashing with Tom's ROM V3.3. It didn't work.
I noticed that the radio version is 1.00.25.08 in the ROM.
I flashed back radio with 1.00.25.05 and everything is Ok. GPS, Wifi, Internet.
I think the problem is with 1.00.25.08 radio version.
Bye.

Hi jcab, thanks for your reply.
The thing is that I left my radio unchanged and it's already 1.00.25.05. Maybe just flashing the same version on it would solve the problem?
Right now I'm trying to "reset" it by taking out the battery as suggested.

Sometime radio is included in the the ROM file.

It seem pretty stupid, BUT...
Have you tried this ? (I mean really tried, step by step) :
1)Disable A-GPS by shaps advance config
2)Update with QuickGPS
3)Launch GPS soft (TomTom or whatever with a satellite view)
4)Let the phone outside (or over a window) 15~20mn
5)Still no satellite or fix ? > Soft Reset the diamond
6)Back to 3)

well nothing so far. tried CTs version 5 lite ROM, then swift BL 6.0 ROM, then changed from hardSPL 1.40 unsigned to hardSPL 1.93 unsigned ... still nothing.
This is as far as I can get:
1) start HTC GPS Tool
2) Select "Cold Start" and leave the rest to their default settings
3) Open the COM port, wait 5 seconds
4) Press "Nav init." button
5) After 2 to 5 Minutes many satellites appear (9 and more sometimes) and maybe the first bar fills up with a somewhat decent signal.
Sometimes the first three bars were filled, meaning that I was getting a signal from 3 satellites
Today, after trying this again with the gps tool, I went into the tom tom 7 GPS settings and I got 7 - 8 satellites signals, but it wouldn't fix.
Very difficult to test since I can't always reproduce it and besides this whole GPS problem makes absolutely no sense.
Taking out the battery when I go to sleep for 36 hours. And I'm so pissed... :-/

Ok, to be mor to the point:
1) Disable A-GPS by shaps advance config <- I never enabled it
2)Update with QuickGPS <- I updated QuickGPS about 10 times
3)Launch GPS soft (TomTom or whatever with a satellite view) <- I started TomTom about 30 times since I got this problem
4)Let the phone outside (or over a window) 15~20mn <- I left the phone outside for 2 hours
5)Still no satellite or fix ? > Soft Reset the diamond <- I softresetted 50 times since I had the problem
6)Back to 3) <- I went back to 3 very often...
Besides that I chaned to different radio;s, to different ROMS, several hardresets, back to 2 stock ROMS, including original SPL, softresetted GPS ect ect.
Don't want to offend you but I really think the problem on my device (and some others) lies deeper than what you suggest...

pietrucci!! I got the GPS to lock on satellites!
now, the story is a bit sick but anyway:
I thought I could try a more or less intuitive sequence of operations to "stimulate" the GPS. I know it sounds silly. The thing is that I can't remember 100% the order of what I've done since I actually didn't believe it would work. Anyhow, let me try to summarize:
1) I loaded the GPS Tool and did a Cold Start (= Select cold start, Open the Port, leave all other settings to their defaults and after opening the port wait 5 seconds, then press "nav init.").
That's what I did multiple times to at least see the satellites and get one to three bars signal. It took like about 3 - 8 minutes +/- to find the satellites. Good, got them. 1 bar signal
Then I think I did a warm restart, then a hot restart, just to check the behaviour of the GPS Tool. The satellites were still there.
Once the satellites are found, I think they remain in a sort of memory, so a cold start (as I read somewhere in the forum) probably erases this kind of satellite cache
2) Started TomTom 7 to check the status and saw many satellites and a few good signals, but no lock.
3) Went outside because I got tired of holding my diamond out of the window (o_O) because I wanted to have full satellite reception. Once outside, TomTom showed many satellites and lots of good signals. This procedure took at leaste 30 seconds. No lock, so I closed TomTom.
4) Here comes the part that I'm not sure anymore, but I think I downloaded the GPS data with QuickGPS and left QuickGPS in memory. Is that program supposed to be left in memory after downloading anyway?
5) Startet TomTom7 again, looking for satellites and just watched the signal bars. I walked around trying to find a good spot.
Well GUESS what? Suddenly the bars turned blue and it locked. I couldn't believe it.
That's actually what I wanted, after getting a few signals with the GPS tool, I wanted to go straight to TomTom and let it search for some time. I'm sure it was at least 10 minutes.
I set up TomTom for a short route and walked, now comes the second problem: I got a lot of lag in Tomtom. It just stops for about 30 seconds and then the map jumps to the new location. There's even a thread about GPS lag...
I tried google maps and it worked surprisingly well. The location "ball" updated almost every pixel while walking. I haven't tried it in a car yet.
I'm sure you're tired of all the procedures that may effect something, especially because you tried a lot of things, but maybe you should really mine.
Get a cold start, get the satellites to show up and at least one signal, let it run for 10 mins, then switch to tomtom and if it also sees the satellites, let it run for another 10 minutes. I know it's not a "solution". I'm familiar with tech stuff and from an technical point of view, all this is very vague and doesn't really make sense, especially since the problem arised after flashing from a stock ROM to a cooked one.
Of course, a few questions arise now:
- Did the download of QuickGPS data make any difference?
- Or was it only a matter of time until I could lock on satellites?
- What did my procedure of cold start, then warm start then hot start do?
- How reliable is my GPS right now?
UPDATE:
-I tried both TomTom and Google Maps without the QuickGPS in memory and both worked, just to be sure it doesn't need to be active.
-I soft-resetted my diamond to test if the GPS would still work and it does. Finding the satellites in google maps took almost a minute. That's quite slow!

Cheers,
morphinhi morphinspectrum,
Thanx for the detailled report of your attemps to get GPS to work again.
I'm a bit in doubt: I now have my device without battery for about 16 hours, was going to leave it that way for 36 hours...
But now I read your report and I get in doubt: should I try...
I also did some tests with the GPS tool. Don't know exactly what I did either, but did a cold restart, nav. init, warm restart, did about everything. And tried it outside, my device was outside for about 2 hours.
But I did'nt use QuickGPS anymore, I didn't start TomTom, so now I get a littel nervous: should I try these things also?
As you said yourself: I doubt if QuickGPS has anything to do with this... But hey it won't harm either...
About your questions:
- Did the download of QuickGPS data make any difference? I personally don't think so.
- Or was it only a matter of time until I could lock on satellites? Here also I don't so, I left my device outside more than 2 hours...
- What did my procedure of cold start, then warm start then hot start do? That I don't know till I try it (again) also.
- How reliable is my GPS right now? I can't answer that either...
Well, inspired by your story I think I give it a last try and then definitely send it back for repair...
Those 36 hours without battery I won't do anymore, it all takes me too long.
Wish me luck!!!
My configuration: at the moment I got stock SPL 1.37 and the Dutch HTC_NLD_1.37.404.3_Radio_1.00.25.03_Ship. But I also tried stock SPL 193 with HTC_WWE_1.93.456.2_Radio_1.00.25.05_Ship.
And three different radio's (08, 07 and 05).

I wish you tons of luck! :)
PS: now that my GPS works I'm thinking of flashing another ROM just to try my procedure again :D (and probably be in trouble again) hahahah :D

Once the satellites are found, I think they remain in a sort of memory, so a cold memory (as I read somewhere in the forum) probably erases this kind of satellite cache
INFO
Right now I'm running hardSPL 1.93 unsigned and SwiftBL 6.0 ROM.
Still using my stock radio 1.00.25.05.
I'll keep you updated!
By the way pietrucci, what SPL, Radio and ROM are you using at the moment?
Cheers,
morphin
Morphin,
Maybe... maybe... maybe... I love you!!!
I just did about the things you did (more or less) and I also got my GPS fix back again!!! (for now, lol)
I really don't get it. In fact I kind of did the same things I already did two or three times before (I think, I can't recall exactly). But now it works (and I hope it keeps working!).
The situation: I am on the Dutch 1.37 stock ROM, including stock SPL. I left my phone without battery for about 19-20 hours.
My actions: I placed the battery and started my device, went outside, started GPS tool, did what you did: cold start, after a few seconds nav. init. I got about 10 satellites but nog strong enough, no fix. Then stopped GPS and restarted it because I couldn't change start type. Then I started with warm start and after 10 seconds stopped and restarted with hot start. Again most satellites but no fix.
Now I did something I didn't do before: stopped GPS tool and started TomTom. In TomTom again satellites but no fix. At least for about 20 seconds and then the miracle happened: FIX of 4 satellites (not much, but it was a fix!). And it stayed fixed!
Huh???????? What? Why? How?
I restarted and again in about 20-25 seconds fix in TomTom.
At the moment I'm in my house and get a fix in TomTom within 20 seconds, 4-5 satellites.
Wrapping up:
1. First of all: don't give up and keep retrying (thanks to you I did), especially because this is a very strange problem: broken GPS by flashing, that can't be???
2. This forum really makes a difference (as you cenrtainly agree).
3. Factors in solving this problem: GPS tool (cold start, nav. init, warm start, hot start); TomTom starting after GPS tool; giving it some time; 20 hours without battery (???); QuikcGPS (I don't think so...).
I keep on taking risks: I 'm going to flash again right now. First I'm going to Swtos latest and benchmark it, I think is very fast (see my benchmark thread). And right after benchmarking I'll test my GPS off course. I hope...
Thanx again for your thoughts and (re)tries.
Keep you informed!

Sorry, dexx05, that was a mistake, I meant "cold start", not "cold memory", of course!
"sort of" is just an english word meaning "some type of memory".
So did it work for you? Maybe you should post all details of your diamond. It helps if you put it in your signature. What hardSPL, Radio and ROM are you using?

oh yeah! congratulations! :) that's great news pietrucci! btw sorry it took so long to write back.
hope your GPS is working great. I tested it in my car and it works well :) did you flash something else in the meantime? I still can't decide what to flash. :p

This helped me to fix it on my compact IV so. I changed a registry key so if you are comfortable doing that kind of thing here you go, use a registry editor and go to key name:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\GPSOnePort
modify the value name "Interface Type" value data from COMM to PHONE
I rebooted after making the change just to be safe although I wasn't sure if I needed to or not. Well after waiting for the longest 60 seconds of my life tomtom v7 started working!!!!
Maybe this help for you.
