I actually get a ERROR 206 on my computer when I try to flash it even though everything is connected. Not sure why.

i had the same error 260 connection problem when i first tried to run this rom update on windows 7 with windows mobile device center...

here's what i did:

launched windows mobile device center >> mobile device settings >> connection settings >> uncheck "allow usb connections" >> ok

that was the only thing i did and on my second attempt to launch the rom update, it went through just fine...

im assuming there was some sort of conflict with the usb connection...

While I love this build from Erofich and appreciate his work, I've found myself spending quite a bit of time undoing all the custom tweaks to the user interface. The alternative, I suppose, is using the Clean version and manually installing the cabs for Microsoft Office 6.1 and the .NET Compact Framework, which probably takes almost as much time.

Previous releases (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374397) haven't included all these custom fonts, backgrounds, and UI elements like ClockOnTop, and I prefer that approach. These are really personal choices, and I believe Microsoft spent some time considering the default settings so that they would have the broadest possible appeal.

That baseline OS look and feel is really what should be baked into the ROMs, then we can customize from there to our own tastes.

Matt,

Any luck using AKU1.2? I have the same problem syncing with two machines. This ROM is great, and this is the only problem I have had.

-Jeff

Tried the ROM linked in the previous message but have had real performance and stability issues with it, caller ID mostly failed, calls dropping, no bluetooth, no MMS etc etc. Reverted to the clean 6e build and performance/stability was right back again. Just back on the site trying to research whether there's any way to roll the later AKU onto the earlier 6e build. Anyone tried this yet?

Have you tried the new ROM from Pampooh (5.2.20757 Build 20282.1.3.6)?

Based on the numbering it looks like it is using AKU1.3.6. I have not had a chance to try it yet, but it looks like it may help with the syncing issue.

Haven't had a chance to try that one yet - my 8500 is off being repaired as the sync/charge port broke. It's downloaded, and I'll give it a go as soon as I get the phone back, thanks.

OK - Still killing time waiting for my phone to come back, so I've been looking at building my own ROM and then customising it to suit exactly what I need. My favourite ROM so far has been Master Erofich's 6e build - fast and stable, but unfortunately no AKU1.2. Having googled until my head exploded, is it as simple as taking the SYS/MSXIPKernel folder from the newer 20757 build and rolling it back into the 6e build? Will that give the stable 6e build with the newer AKU, or have I missed something obvious?

Cheers

Matt

Well - it looks like my 8500 is dead, went in for repair for the usb connector problem, came back with a trashed antenna which is beyond economic repair - discussions ongoing about how it happened, but that's a different story. I've looked around for a replacement but no-one seems to be selling them any more. So, unless someone has one they want to sell (and if you do **please** get in touch!), I will be backing out of this thread and will be abandoning the work I've done so far.

Thanks for everyone's help, both on the forums and via PM.

Ebay has the smartflip for less than $100 brand new, don't know what kind of difference there is in the versions. I managed to get mine for less than $70 brand new. Don't know if this helps but just a thought...

I had one from the US delivered to the UK as the first replacement after my original one failed, that was dead on arrival and the store in the US wasn't willing to provide any help so I'm not keen on chasing overseas suppliers. If one turns up in the UK on ebay I'll go for it. In the meantime I've got a second hand Touch Diamond to use and I may end up getting a Diamond 2 when they're released in a week or two.

Thanks for the thought though!
