View Full Version : 2 issues with Tilt keypad

I bought an ATT tilt quite a while ago. It is out of warranty now, and wouldn't you know it, something went wrong.
I'm currently using Dutty's Diamond ROM (with the keyboard fix installed), but the same happened before with the official ROM. While I text some keys don't work. I'll be typing away, just to look at the screen and see that I am missing a bunch of letters, rendering the message unreadable. I then have to go back and fill in all the blanks, and even then sometimes it takes several tries to get it to go. The same happens with the backspace key; sometimes it just doesn't work, other times it does (oddly enough, when it doesn't work normally, it usually lets me hit "function" and use it as the delete key).
My other concern is that there is a ton of lag while typing. It takes a while for letters to show up. Is that normal (for the Tilt, at least. I'm still wishing I had bought a BlackBerry)?

Yeah, I had similar troubles. I just upgraded my SPL and hopefully will be testing it further testing.
what SPL are you running?

I'm not entirely sure, it was a while ago that I flashed the ROM. How do I find out what it is? I tried Device Information, but it wasn't there.

you have to put it in Bootloader mode.
hold power and camera button while resetting with the stylus, then you'll come to the tricolor screen which will give you the SPL info.

I am having the same exact problem, 1 out of 5 times it works corectly so im thinking it has to be somekind of software, my problem started when I started using ROMeOS's rom's and I have tried different SPL's virsions.

I've heard that the keyboard/membrane may be the problem. Is that likely? If so, is there anywhere to buy them?

You can use this to update your SPL, I just went from 1.0 to 3.29.

Thanks!
But they only have the outer keypad (the one right below the screen). Well, I hope this can be fixed with software, because the only place I saw that listed them showed them at $39.99 and they were out of stock.

I got the same SPL he has, I did a hard reset afterwards then downgraded back to 1.0 because I saw no improvement.

I thought RomeOS worked best with 3.29.

Success! If the SPL doesn't work and I can't convince AT&T to do it, I'll order one and put it in. How do you install it?
EDIT: I just installed skyfire, and noticed that while I was putting in my email and password it was smooth and nothing was skipped. I'm almost 100% certain this is a problem with WinMo itself

I have been having the same problem as you are describing, but I have noticed that it is with heavy use keys like T, H, E, R, S and for some reason V.
I was getting the feeling that it was a hardware problem rather than a software problem because, especially with the V, I have to apply a bit of pressure to get the button to work.
Unfortunately for me I bought mine off Ebay so the warranty is already void.
Incidentally mine started happening when I had the original network providers (T-Mobile) rom on it. I have since installed an original HTC rom and it hasnt made the slightest bit of difference.
So, how easy is it to open up the back of the Tytn II and replace the keyboard unit then?

Oh my god! Thank you for posting this. I swear I have always felt like posting this but always got too lazy. I thought it was only me that had this problem. It is so annoying typing away, and then having to spend another minute to retype the letters that didn't get inputed the first time. It is so frustrating and I thought it was my fault or something, or ROM, I believe its hardware related, but I am not going to spend another dime on this POS. I'm just not so patiently awaiting t-mobile to release their android device, and I will jump ship and never look back! Thanks for the post again, it has given me piece of mind.....ironically

I'm kind of wanting T-Mobile's Android phone, but seeing as how it's made by HTC, I'll wait for the first couple of user-reviews to come out. I bought the Tilt based on website reviews, but man, I was really misled. They said the camera was great, I can only get blurry unrecognizable images. They made no mention of the fact that when you switch to landscape it takes 3 seconds for all the graphics to appear.
I'm disappointed, and I think my next phone will be a plain vanilla flip phone.
Anywho, I'm updating the SPL now, I'll post if it makes any change.

Okay, I now have HardSPL 3.56 and there does not appear to be much of a change. There was some short lag at the beginning of the text string, but afterwards it caught up. I missed no letters this time. I cannot say how much of this was the placebo effect (i.e. it just felt faster), but perhaps if everyone with the issue tries we can have a reasonable answer.
ETA: I added a poll, so if you try this, fill in the poll!

disable word suggestion under Input setting.
i don't miss any characters with it disabled.

It was already disabled for me. I know I didn't change it, I think the ROM came that way.

I'm trying a new ROM right now, so I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I refuse to install a new SPL, mainly because I don't know how to do it but if it come down to I'll just read the sticky. I'm on the 1.0 oli btw.

My new rom also came with word suggestion switched off by default. Definately thing its a hardware issue.

I don't know. I missed a few letters while texting earlier today, and the lag was terrible. However, while using SkyFire the typing is smooth and nothing is missed. This is definitely an issue with how WinMo is coded to accept text. I'll try using some third party texting programs and see if those improve the issue at all. Could it be that the letters go missing because one types faster than WinMo can accept it? If that's the case, I'm jumping ship to Android ASAP.

I'm still having issues with some letters but mostly its the letter "w". Can it be that because I use it so much, I wore it out? Its pretty annoying because "w" is the start to a lot of questions. I don't blame you to be skeptical on android because it is an HTC device, but seeing as how I work at T-Mobile getting one isn't going to hurt my wallet so much and plus I can always just demo one first ;)

I've noticed that I am not missing very many letters anymore, so the SPL may have fixed that, but I definitely have a problem with the spacebar. I finish a word and type it, but because of the lag, the space goes within the word.

I'm currently on SPL 3.29, and I have a lil lag as well. but other than that, the texting part looks good, I dont miss any letters.

I don't know how you are all making out, but I've gone through 2 different Tilts with AT&T under warranty because of buttons failing on the thing. I think it's a hardware problem because on the first one I had 3 buttons that I would have to JAM in and they were towards the upper left - on the second one I had buttons in the middle row die.
Just one day you notice you're missing letters in SMS so you start hitting that one a little harder and then it sort of spreads.
Maybe pocket lint behind the buttons?
Oh well, 3rd one should last me until my Touch HD. :)

this has too be a hardware issue, i have flashed almost every rom and every combination of hard spl and radios and nothing works, i have tried all the disabling of t9 and anything else i have found on these threads and still no help. although it is not much help but the original AT&T ROM seems to work the best for some reason, even NATF 2.1 seems to be working better than most other ROMS this kinda sucks because i really liked a few other roms out there but cant use it because my keyboard is really bad with some of them. i have returned my TILT 3x and it seems like after a few weeks a couple of buttons always stop working properly..oh well have to wait till i can get my hands of the xperia or htc touch pro or htc dream!

Alright I gave in, I upgrded to spl 3.29 and I am still missing some letters...not as much as before, but when I do miss them its bad. I mean it will be like 3 or 4 letters in a row that wont type. I also have a problem setting up like functino or cap shift to stay on. If I press the button twice to lock it on, and it sometimes still doesn't work and come off by itself.
