Ipaq rx1950 boot problem, probably rom

Today I tried to hard reset my hp ipaq rx1950, so I search on the internet for the combination to reset it and i try to reset.
The device rebooted but something strange happens. At the end of the booting, when usually the operating system starts up, the boots stops. (I have wm5). It stops exactly at the end of the booting, when the status bar of the boot is completely filled. The hardware works but it can't enter in the os.
Someone can tell me what is happened and a solution to fix it?

I have rx1950, but it in KOREAN, i can flash to change it to ENGLISh, because hpRUU can not detect model ID.
I search around the internet, but no solution...

Can I backup it, cook rom, then reflash?

Maybe you can..
Using mtty, and putting ipaq in bootloader mode (Contacts + Mail + Reset for as long as your PDA boots). Connect the ipaq to pc and open mtty (you also have to kill activesync process from the task manager, the process is something abount wcecommon.exe), then select "USB" and click ok.. Press enter until USB> appear. Insert a free sd card in your ipaq and type in mtty "r2sd", it will copy your rom to the sd card. after that i don't know how to continue to change language, but i hope you will share you rom with me so i can reflash my ipaq.

I need the nb0 file, not the upgrade.. I need a rom exctracted from an ipaq rx1950, the upgrade you have linked is installable only via activesync, but i can't connect the ipaq to pc via activesync if it don't boot up the os..
If you have the nb0 file to boot the os via sd card, i'll use it. No matter if it is korean..
Mtty is a software that enable you to flash the ipaq without booting it, but i need the rom to do it..

same problem here (italian language) i read somewhere that we could extract the .nb0 from the .nbk file that is in the official hp upgrade but i don't know if it could work with the ipaq 1950 and of course i don't know how to do that. it's something about deleting the first 64 bytes of the file with an hex editor, i tried it but it didn't work for me. i hope it can help you and i hope then you can help me! ;)

I think you can't. we need to extract the image from the .nbf file -CEOS.nbf in my case- but i have no idea how we can do it. I saw another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-301856.html) about this issue, i'll try to work on it, but i'm definitively not a an expert in such things. If i have good news, i'll tell you on this thread.

chris malone universal bootloader removes the first 3690 bytes of the CEOS.nbf. now i can't try that file on a sd card, but i'll let you know. bye

-Download mtty from this link

-connect the ipaq rx1950 to the pc with the serial cable and insert an sd in the ipaq
-Put rx1950 in bootloader mode: Contacts + Mail + Reset for as long as your PDA boots (it will be a white screen)
-Execute mtty
-Where there is written "COMX" (X is a number) select usb or something that is not like "COMX"..
-in the window that pops up press enter until USB> prompt appear
-Now type: r2sd and wait till the ipaq completes the backup..
So you now have a backup of your rom that you can use to restore the os..

Than upload this rom to rapidshare or mediafire or megaupload or another hosting site and give me the link to download..

try to ask someone who's selling a used 1950 on ebay, if you're lucky... Unfortunately for me, i need the italian version of the rom, because i think the english one won't work and nobody is selling an italian 1950. however if you find it please let me know.

guys a friend of mine has lost his usb cable for his 1950 and we want to flash it with an english rom. do you know how to make it only using the sd card.
i unpacked the exe file from the hp site and it produced 2 .nbf files , i put them on the sdcard but when i enter bootloader it says wrong image file.
any help?

Finally, I fixed this problem.

I also got that problem few days ago. My rx1950 was in CHT rom. I got another rx1950 in english rom. I've FR rom on my iPaq rx1950.
Till now I know that is very hard to change the main language (i want to have EN)
I've downloaded the EN *.img from link in post above.
For first after cloning from sector "0" device said "Wrong image !!!" - used WinHEX o/c.
Then i've set the first sector to: 100000 and it said only "Cheking image file" and that's it :(
Any ideas, advices?! Maby different sector to start with when cloning img > SD??

And what kind of FS you have your SD format? FAT or FAT32!?
Is there any difference?

WinHex isn't overwriting ALL area of sectors? inc. FileSystem?!

1x Toshiba SD - 512Mb, 1xSD Sandisk 1Gb, 1xSD Kingston 2Gb [tried on all of those]
OS Vista Biz. 32bit
Downloaded 1950eng.rar (~23mb) and Extracted 1950eng.img (~953Mb)
Cards are formated in FAT(16)

This is how i'm doing it:
1. Launching WinHex
2. Tools > Open Disk > Logical Drive Letters > "Removable medium (F) HD1"
3. As You said [in option] EDIT > Fill sectors witch "00"
Fill with hex values "00"
"OK"
4. After abowe operation system cannot open the device: "The volume does not contain a recognized file system"

w/o doing "00" reset:

5. Tools > Disk Tools > Clone disk:
Source raw img - from file "1950eng.img"
Dest.Medium -Drive F: (it need to be formated first, in other way Winhex not accepting the drive)

OK, I know your problem. You should choice physical media instead of logical drive latters.

Maybe "00" reset is not needed.

It was a strange thing.
On two computers (both notebooks) i didnt have na phisical media devices in list.
after doing abowe operation on PC the menu appears.
Dont know why...

But finally it works !!

Hello,
I nd my friend managed to install the English ROM on HP iPAQ 1950 successfully. It was simplified Chinese ROM before English.
Please check whether you meet following requirements before changing: WixHEX software, 2Gb card and download the English ROM version from http://www.badongo.com/cn/file/12822931
And Before changing make sure you have taken backup of previous ROM using mtty.exe(Posted previously)
1. Format 2GB card with FAT32 nd insert it into computer port.
2. Open WinHex(registered version needed) goto options: edit mode->select default mode
3. Goto Tools->openDisk->select SD card under Physical device options
4. Goto Edit->fill Blocks->fill every sector of SD card with 00
5. Goto Tools->DiskTools->clone image (Select source file and destination file)
(Select starting sector 00 )
6. Remove SD card and insert it into HP iPAQ device
7. Press Contact+Mail then press reset button. So that hp iPAQ enters into boot loader mode
8. Then just follow the instructions on iPAQ device.
(Initially it hangs up in between after this remove battery and again insert it and follow steps 7 and 8 only)
Enjoy English version…..Note it is illegal to change the ROM…but take risk and store backup of previous ROM…
(Note: We tried everything.. read information on other portals..even tried to map Chinese ROM to English ROM by changing actual bytes..but nothing worked…Finally information here helped a lot.)

In WinHex i cant , when i select clone option > Select the SD Physical Drive then result Freeze the program !

Yes you can do that with WinHex tools > disk tools > Clone disk
In source use your SD letter drive
Destination raw the name of file that you need !
Then Start it may take long time and may freeze but all what you ve to do is Waiting !

All whats we need now the specific bytes !

Example for HP IPAQ 4150

IPL r2sd strap 3072 bytes (0x00000C00)
Bootloader (SPL) r2sd boot 264192 bytes (0x00040800)
Bootloader and Windows CE r2sd 32558080 bytes (0x01F0CC00)

I tried to update my rx1950 ROM and it went DEAD. That was really bricked.

When I pressed the power button, nothing happened. As if it had no baterry. Tried a lot of combinations, including reset + mail + contacts.

The only thing that worked: inset an SD card with an image, press POWER and RESET, release RESET and hold POWER until the screen lights. Then it gave me the option to restore the image.

After that, I found out that this same procedure brings the bootloader, if the bootloader is not corrupt. But the fact is that it only worked with na SD card, without it nothing even blinked. I hope this helps anyone who may have a dead rx1950.

Can anyone answer this question: is it possible to kill a device beyond recovery by software?

If there is a ROM (read only memory) with a minimal loader, it can always be ressurected. On the other hand, if all the "ROM" is not really read-only and may be written, then it can go really dead.

Well, actually I gave up... not having the files to build the English ROM makes it really hard. Also, I think I had a wrong version: the files extracted from a WM 6.1 emulator are different from the ones used to build the ROM. Let me make this clear: if I get "solitaire.exe" from the working 6.1 ROM, it is different from the "solitaire.exe" that I extarcted from a pt-br ROM.

ive found a 6.1 upgrade for rx1950 in this forum.. that's an upgrade from 5.0 to 6.1.. could we directly upgrade our different language ROM into this one??? i have mine in korean..will it work??? the upgrade is in english

I've been workgin with this upgrade.

To get the language files, you have to get them from another WM of the same versin (and microsoft's emulator is a good place). The messages change from WM 5 to WM 6.1. For instance, in bubblebreaker the menu is different from wm 5 and wm 6.1, and it does not work (I also tried that).

It should be as siple as: get a WM 6.1 for rx1950, get a wm 6.1 pt-br ROM, extract all files from pt-br ROM and replace the language files (the ones having 0409 on the name) over the wm 6.1 rx1950 rom, and it's done. Well, it didn't work...

Ah, to try this, you need the kitchen, so you can replace the files and rebuild the ROM, and then burn them on the device and see if it works. Mine crasheda few times, tring to get it to work.

There is a topic here somewhere on how to translate any ROM, if youre interested I can find it.

You CAN upgrade wm5 korean rom to english 6.1 rom. Just donwload the ROM and burn it into the device. Unlikely to cause any problem.

What I couldn't do is to translate the english 6.1 rom to another language. I really wanted a wm 6.1 pt-br ROM, and could not figure out how to do it.

It should NOT happen. Are you really absolutely sure it is the same device, and the file you got is not corrupt?

It does give you a warning message, but it does not say the ROM is imcompatible... at least, I didn't come across this. Did you try the russian version?

yes.. im sure that it is not corrupted.. i encountered the same problem when upgrading from this korean ROM to english rom wm5.. maybe just the same thing happen when i upgrade to wm6 since almost the same..
