View Full Version : Hurricane Ike

As some may not know, Hurricane Ike is a strong Category 2 hurricane that is currently moving towards the Texas coast, particularly Galveston and Houston. I live right in the middle of it all, with where i live being almost 100% in the track of the storm. I live kinda inland though (sw inner houston). My question is "how are you affected by Ike and what are you doing to prepare for it?"

To answer my question- I'm not really that affected, living inland on a hill, but i've bought myself some canned food nonetheless. I'm semi-liveblogging the whole thing on my youtube channel, which is in my sig. I don't know if i'll have electricity though, because, despite all the money we paid for this place, it still has terrribly unreliable electrical service

Check out the channel. if it doesn't get updated because of power issues, rest assured it will be first thing when i get power back. Besides, I need subscribers and more diverse viewing population.

Yeah man, it's getting pretty bad. I was just reading an article on it where they state you guy having 15ft + waves crashing into your coastlines. Hope all if well for everyone out there and Louisiana.

Ditto. We took a hit with gustav and the generator saved the day

its a bit late for that, now isn't it?
generators are all sold out anyway and they weigh too much to feasibly transport back home.

i have a nissan 350z. I don't think a generators feasible for it. But i guess we can get the home depot people to follow us home in the truck......

what kind of output do you suggest for the generator?

Its funny how people think of texas as the rugged, dry, desert west, but here we are about to have a hurricane.

there are no hills within oh... 200 miles of houston. Its flat. 100% flat. Or maybe even below sea level. funny how that always seems to happen to places prone to hurricanes.

I just got power back yesterday around 7 (central time).

I really used my HTC Touch for a lot. Especially Live Search and GPS.

I used Opera Mobile for checking status about power, etc. (news sites)
I also used it for checking forums, blogs, etc.

I used Live Search for finding businesses (laundromats, restaurants, etc) in my area. (and to call them to see if they are open). I also used it for directions (using GPS). It all worked very well.

There was also a leak of clips for my favorite band (Oasis ;)), and they were in .asf format. I opened the links in Opera Mobile, and they immediately opened in Windows Media Player and streamed. I was amazed.
