The 29.99 plan is the one you want. It is the unlimited plan, and identical to the more expensive plan, which is for older WM devices. Your 6800 qualifies for the cheaper plan.

IF you use an exchange server you will need the $44.99. If there is no need for exchange servers than you can do the $29.99. Both are unlimited.

Correct. Thats basically the main difference as I understand it. The $44.99 plan is basically for Corporate Exchange users.

What I was told was that the $44.99 plan "included" the ability to tether "legally", while the 29.99 plan did not.... I switched to the $29.99 plan and haven't seen any issues..... And I still tether... lol

I have used the 29.99 with Exchange, so there is no issue there. Its all a bunch of crap. Go with the 29.99 plan. No worries!

VzW's site says that tethering is $15 + the $45 plan hich is equal to the data card....

In any case I have no data plan.

I'm on the 29.95 plan, and so is my wife. We don't use Exchange nor the vzw wireless push software. We just use IMAP mail along with other routine internet browsing, gps, etc. The 29.95 plan works fine for us.

They're lying to you then. I am on the south shore and I just signed up for it, via #611, 2 months ago. A friend from Weymouth was the one who told me. Don't give in, demand it and save yourself $15 a month

As an overall summary, the $45 per month Unlimited Data plan and the $30 per month Unlimited Data Plan are identical with the sole difference being that the $45 per month adds on a feature called Verizon Wireless Sync.

Most people don't know what Wireless Sync is and I don't know anyone personally that uses it. I last used WS years ago with my old Treo 650. It's a decent tool and was useful when it first came out, but these days people would be far better off going with a free or low-cost Exchange account from someplace like Mail2web (http://www.mail2web.com).

With respect to ActiveSync, Verizon made a big deal of saying that ActiveSync would not work on the $30 per month Unlimited Data Plan. This is not true and never was true. They were just trying to scare off users would likely have a higher average data usage.

My personal belief is the following... Verizon knew that AT&T would begin pricing their 3G plan for the new iPhone at $30 long before it ever became official. So Verizon quietly put out the "new" lower priced unlimited plan on the market a few months earlier. This way they were not at a steep pricing disadvantage. Verizon also limited the applicability of this cheaper plan to newer handsets in the beginning. This way, people who had older PDAs and were paying $45 a month would upgrade to newer handsets (and the resulting new contracts). The lower pricing was originally available only for Blackberry handsets and then moved over to the Windows Mobile handsets where it has been gradually expanded to include all of the newer handsets.

Of course, I got grandfathered in under an old $20 unlimited data plan with Wireless Sync, 800 TXT Msgs and 100 Pix Msgs, so it's a safe bet that I'll be buying handsets off of eBay for a long, long time! :D No way I'm letting them touch my plan! :p

I can confirm when I downgraded the wireless sync stopped working. Verizon actually assured me it would still work. When I finally got through to PDA support the rep had to ask his supervisor and she confirmed it does not work on the lower plan.

They claim on the phone that Exchange Server won't work. We all know that is not the case. The guy in Boston actually got the correct answer. They call the $45 plan "unlimited" they call the $29 4 or 5 gigs.

I loved the wireless sync BTW. The free mail2web does not do what Wireless sync did. I believe you would have to pay for an exchange server account on their site to replicate.

Just to be clear, I DO use an exchange server that connects through ActiveSync. Would that still work with the 29.99 plan? I just called Verzion and they said it would not, however I'm getting conflicting information in this thread. Anyone?

That's funny, because I'm paying $29.99 and have unlimited. Can't speak for wireless sync, never used it. Pay what you want.

What exactly does the wireless sync do for you that mail2web doesn't?

I was syncing my pop email account. The free version doesn't do pop. I know I could forward everything to an an IMAP account but that just seems messy to me. Right now I am using Mobipush just to get my email.

Wireless Sync really is good and simple to use. In my case though I wasn't "needing" it, I just liked using it.

BTW thank you so much for all your efforts here. I am of the silent majority whom rarely posts but read a lot and I have used your advice many times.

This thread was a sweet find! I just changed from the 44.99/month plan to the 29.99 plan. I am an Exchange user, but according to the comments in this thread it shouldn't be a problem. The CSR I spoke with mentioned something about the IT department not authorizing my connection with Exchange, while using the 29.99 plan, but I doubt this will be a problem for me as my IT deptartment allows us to connect any WM phone to our Exchange servers.

Just had a question for all of you...
So I'm just finding out about this $30/month data deal, my question is would this limit me from sending instant messages from a third party vendor, like Shape Service IM+? Also how much is your total phone bill? Or do you guys just use your phone as a pda and not use it as a phone at all? I'm asking because my phone bill is way way way up there... about $130/month... If possilbe let me know what plan you have so I can change this almost paying $3,000 to verizon for 2 yrs. Thanks guys and gals.

Ok...

Something must be different here. It would be very dangerous for Verizon to lie to us when we call. I will record the next call I make.

I live in West Newbury, 5 miles SW of Newburyport, MA.

I am using a Family Voice plan, which is $10 cheaper and the 2nd phone is $10. I also get 8% company discount & a 12% feature discount.

Are you $29 folks using a Voice plan or a Voice & Data Plan?

Perhaps it is my 2 phones on a Family Share Plan, discounts, etc. that disqualifies me from the $29 unlimited data. Hard to compare apples to apples with all these variables.

I have been on the $29.99 plan (Family Share with 2 phones, mine being the 9.99 add on) for about 3 months now, I have used exchange with activesync with no problems. I will say that the wirelessSync will NOT work (at least with verizon servers). Some of you on this plan have tethered, did you get billed extra for that? I would love to use it with my carPC, but am scared too ;)

The ONLY difference between the $29.99 unlimited plan and $44.99 unlimited plan is the ability to use Wireless Sync in a corporate environment. Exchange via Activesync still works. Tethering is a completely different feature and has it's own separate charge based on what plan you have. If you have the $44.99 plan, tethering is cheaper etc.

Personally, I loathe Wireless Sync and wouldn't use it even if the data plan was free. If corporate solutions via Wireless Sync is not important to you, go with the $29.99 plan.

I think Wireless Sync is awesome if you leave your PC at work. It ties right into outlook and all my folders and rules work on my 6800 perfect. SO wireless sync is great. Plus there is unlimited on internet phone only. If you tether to pc you still only get 5 gigs a month

what's are you goes average bill thinkin about possibly switchin to vzw one of the reasons why i looked away was because of the expensive plans i'd probably get a shared plan of 1400 or a individual with the cheapest plan and probably the 30 dollars text plan and 250 text

I also use the 29.99 plan (I started with the 45 plan and switched as soon as I learned about it here.

They say that you cannot tether with this plan nor sync with exchange, however the reality is that you can sync with exchange, just not through the vzw sync servers that verizon provides. With a custom ROM you can tether without issue (though it is against the TOS)

I have been running on this plan for a couple of months and teather regurally and sync (directly) with an exchange server without issue or any suprises on my bill.

I am glad I posted about this....I thought I would be an idiot for asking LMAO. The company I worked for had wifi throughout so I never paid for data.....now the company I am with has us stuck behind a proxy and gives access to like 8 websites......so I am looking to add the data plan.

<rant>

I remember the conversation I had with the VZW rep about data plans when I was getting ready to replace my crappy BREW lg phone. Apparently, some phones REQUIRE the $45/month data plan. Why? "because you can sync with exchnage and tether." But we all know that syncing with exchange on the $30 works just as well, and that there are many ways to bypass the lack of tethering. I almost bought the i760, but that it required $45 data plan turned me off, hence my acquiring of the titan. DAMN, am I glad that happened. I am pretty sure that I am one of the users that abuses the "unlimted" $30/month.

The only difference as far I as I can discern is that if your data usage gets to high on the $30/month, they will suspect tethering, and ass-rape you for charges/force you to change plans.

Well that's the strange thing. Never since I've been a customer of Verizon has tethering been included in the 44.95 plan, it's always been an add-on feature (for another 15/month). I was paying that for a long time, 44.95 + 15 a month. Are you all telling me that the 44.95 plan actually says somewhere that it includes tethering? I'm pretty sure it doesnt...

When I changed I sked what the difference was, and the CSR said the "ability" to tether. I stated I could not tether now. Basically it boiled down to the $45 plan can tether for anadditional $15. With the $30 plan, tethering isn't even an option.

gc14
19th September 2008, 04:57 PM
1. There is no data plan that includes tethering. Tethering is and always will be a completely separate feature and a completely separate charge. However, the data plan you have affects the cost of the tethering feature. The higher the data plan you have, the lower the cost for tethering.

2. We can easily get around the ability for them to detect tethering with a few simple registry edits, allowing us to tether WITHOUT adding the tethering feature, regardless of what data plan we have.

3. Exchange through Activesync works exactly the same on all data plans, and works quite well. Exchange through crappy Wireless Sync ONLY works on the $44.95 plan.

That should clear up just about every issue talked about in this thread thus far.
