Hello i made this thread to post my skins for start icon, a thread already exist but it will be clearly at that, i think ;)
This manipulation doesn't use more memory, no app required.

For QVGA WQVGA:

Install "Icone demarrer.cab" it's just 2registry key. (thank to my friend Shakass)

Then put in "/Windows"the file named "shellres.96.dll.****.mui"
**** is the localization code of your ppc's rom (040C for France and 0409 for US/UK)
The files you'll find in the folder are in 040C so change them if you're not french.

And Soft reset

This operation will replace too your wait cursor by the wait cursor vista by Marshall if you want to keep your cursor follow the How-to instructions to extract and modify your shellres.96.dll file.

If you want to put your original system just erase your shellres.96.dll.****.mui file and soft reset.


The folder QVGA-WQVGA contains all the Start icons

Change Start text

Open the file named shellres.dll.****.mui and go the String value 321 change the name, compile script and save then sign with MSsigner and put in /Windows; Enjoy !!

Here is some shellres.dll.040C.mui modified: Démarrer, Start, HTC, SFR, Vide(empty)
Change the country code if necessary.

For VGA:

Same manipulation just the name of the file is "shellres.192.dll.****.mui"

The folder VGA contains only the "Blue windows" and "Office" Start icons for the moment if VGA's user wants some other, request it ;)
"Points" icon added.

How-To



If you want to create your own icon,

For QVGA WQVGA

Create an icon in 21x18 then save as .ico file (32bits)
Take one of the "shellres.96.dll.****.mui" file
Or if you want to keep your own Wait cursor:
Copy to your SD card then to your PC the file named "shellres.96.dll"
Open it in Reshacker and go to "Icon group/4609
Clic on Action/Replace Icon/Open new file
Insert your new icon, clic replace.
Save your modified file takes the name of the old "shellres.96.dll.****.mui" and the old takes the name of "shellres.96.dll.****.mui".
If you have used your own "shellres.96.dll" file rename it as "shellres.96.dll.****.mui"

Open Mssigner,search your shellres file, clic Start sign Process
a window appear "Process finished!" then go where is your shellres file, a text file has been create
Open it, if there is wrote "Warning: This file is signed, but not timestamped,Succeeded" that prouved all is okay ;)

After you know the suit.

For VGA
Same things just the size of the icon must be 41x36 and the name must be "shellres.192.dll.****.mui"


What is my Country Number?
Execute the Mortscript which is in the folder "ShellresNameHelper" (with Mortscript) Big Thank to mr_deimos for this script.

All the Softs are in the Tools folder

If you need some ideas here is a french site with lot of PNG image

When you do a start icon file
Post the info (VGA QVGA; US FR)

Choose an icôn and go in the folder which has the same name, then put the shellres file you'll find in windows. If you aren't french change the "040C" by your localization code (0409 for US)

^No you have to add the icon with Reshacker in your shellres file found in the /Windows folder.

Or install the "Start Icon Certificates.cab" (thanks eme82)

Then put in "/Windows"the file named "shellres.96.dll.****.mui"

I've installed the cab, and then copied the mui file into Windows folder. Soft reseted and nothing happens... Still the same old boring windows logo...

I know ama sound stupid but Am lost...

I installed the Cert.cab and i downloaded the icons which have the 0409 for US..By the way I have a sprint touch...Once Cert.cab installed. I try to copy the new shellers..mui file to windows and it tells me cannot be copied ( am using total commander) I was looking for the reshacker in the windows also could not find it... Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I have one question, I am using Garmins rom on my Kaiser and he has custom icons(for apps in the rom like contacts, calendar, ...). After apllying the steps it changed these icons and also it changed the rotating "thing" in the middle of the screen that appears when the phone is working.

Is it because the installation of the certificates?

@Jonas savimbi Your qtek g100 is a pda not a pdaphone; i think it's that the problem, the shellres file contains a lot of icon of windows mobile as status phone and other surely your shellres file is not the same
Look into /windows what sort of shellres file you have

@Jsanta11 Use resco explorer i think this resolve your problem

@wysepro "step by step"...what do you want to do? if you want to create your own icon you have just to take one of the shellres file which is in first post then follow the steps.(use reshacker on your pc)

Wow, thats a bit complex but thanks for your reply, very helpful.

I have a few questions though i hope you can answer,

So the icon i put in was the clear windows logo, so that has the vista cursor built in with it?
I deleted my original shelres.96.xxxx.dll so i will have to try and get an original and extract the icon (the cursor i originally had) and repackage it into the .dll as per your instructions, is that about right?

What is the original file, is it a .dll or a .dll.mui by original i mean before using the certificates.cab

Also, can anyone suggest how i can delete or rename or move the .dll everytime i try i get an error stating there is a sharing violation

The Original file is named shellres.96.dll
The certificate "tell to windows" to take the .mui file first
So if you install a file named shellres.96.dll.****.mui it's prioritary

So if you want to keep your original wait cursor extract from /windows the shellres.96.dll file modify it and rename as shellres.96.dll.****.mui.
(If you can extract your shellres.96.dll try to copy it on storage card with Resco explorer then copy on pc)

Yes I'm sure. I renamed the file to shellres.96.dll.0407.mui for Germany O2. And yes I do the changes with Resco Explorer.

After some trial and error I have been able to get this to work with no problems. Im somewhat new to this so I thought I would post what I did because I know some people had a hard time understanding how to get this done.

1. Installed Marshall Waitcursor
2. Soft reset
3. Installed Certificate Cab from post#5
4. Soft reset
5. Downloaded Madremiha's start icons from post#1. (make sure you get the right ones)
6. Unzip the "shellres.96.dll.****.mui" found in the folder of the icon you like.
7. Place in /Windows (I used Total Commander)
8. Soft reset

Thats it.

yes i dled the cab to my phone then i dled the skins icon pack 0409 for us on my computer sent the superman shellres96.dll.0409 file to my phone got it saved it copied an tried to add it in my windows folder an it said i couldnt over right the one that was there etc... then i i edited the file to shellres96.dll.0409.mui added it in windows folder it let me place it there i soft reset it an nothing!!! so thats where i am!! help me please lol

yes i dled the cab to my phone an installed it.

Yes that was the one i wanted, however, i had an old phone which has the same ROM on it so i just copied the shellres.96 file from there and modified the icon in reshacker now i have the wait cursor i want and the start menu icon too

This manipulation doesn't use more memory, no app required.

For QVGA WQVGA:

Install "Icone demarrer.cab" it's just 2registry key. (thank to my friend Shakass)

Then put in "/Windows"the file named "shellres.96.dll.****.mui"
**** is the localization code of your ppc's rom (040C for France and 0409 for US/UK)
The files you'll find in the folder are in 040C so change them if you're not french.

And Soft reset

This operation will replace too your wait cursor by the wait cursor vista by Marshall if you want to keep your cursor follow the How-to instructions to extract and modify your shellres.96.dll file.

If you want to put your original system just erase your shellres.96.dll.****.mui file and soft reset.


The folder QVGA-WQVGA contains all the Start icons

Ok, I get that some people don't want to install wisbar or smallmenu due to maybe the added cost or the memory footprint required.

Here is what you need to do to change the start icon. What was already mentioned in this thread should have gotten you half way there... I've only tested this on my WM6.1 Hermes setup.

What you need: (please use search)
1) Marshall WM6 Waitcursor (any one of the many)
2) Total Commander or Resco Explorer
3) MS file signer
4) Reshack for Windows
5) IcoFX for Windows (or any Icon editor but this one is free and handles non-square icons)

What you need to do:
1.) Install Marshall's waitcursor and verify that it is working with soft-reset.
2.) Once you got Marshall's waitcursor working, open up Total Commander or Resco Explorer and go to Windows. Look for the file Shellres.96.dll.XXXX.mui (XXXX is your localization, for US it is 0409). Copy that file to your SD card or My Documents and then copy the file to your desktop.
3.) Open up IcoFX and make two icons in 32bit + Alpha format. One icon in 21x18 pix and the other in 16x16 pix.
4.) Open up Reshack and open the shellres file you copied from your PDA. Goto Icon Group and look for the MS icons. I believe it is the first and the fifth icons down the line. Replace the icons with the ones you made. Save.
5.) Sign the new Shellres file with the MS signer tool.
6.) Use Total Commander or Resco Explorer to copy the new Shellres file to windows, overwriting the old one. Then soft reset.

Be happy with your new start icon without having to install wisbar.

The folder VGA contains only the "Blue windows" and "Office" Start icons for the moment if VGA's user wants so other, request it ;)

If you want to create your own icon,

For QVGA WQVGA

Create an icon in 21x18 then save as .ico file (32bits)
Take one of the "shellres.96.dll.****.mui" file
Open it in Reshacker and go to "Icon group/4609
Clic on Action/Replace Icon/Open new file
Insert your new icon, clic replace.
Save your modified file takes the name of the old "shellres.96.dll.****.mui" and the old takes the name of "shellres.96.dll.****.mui".

Open Mssigner,search your shellres file, clic Start sign Process
a window appear "Process finished!" then go where is your shellres file, a text file has been create
Open it, if there is whrote "Warning: This file is signed, but not timestamped,Succeeded" that prouved all is okay ;)

After you know the suit.

For VGA
Same things just the size of the icon must be 41x36 and the name must be "shellres.192.dll.****.mui"

All is in the Tools folder

Ok i used the Us Code 0409 and followed the procedure step by step, but here are the files i used, if i can figure out the problem and get this working, ill start taking request, i can figure out how to upload more than one thing at a time, tried it several times and it only uploads one file so i have enclosed it inside a rar file

In the How to i said the file must be saved in 32bits and i think you saved it in 24bits

I re-save it in 32Bits and i had the good txt signed now

its the start icon that came with it, standrard windows start icon, this is frustrating me, im about to say the hell with it lol, but do you mind making that htc one for a vga device if thats asking too much can i pm you giving you a step my step breakdown of what im doing so you can tell me where i went wrong?

Thanks, it did work now. Elim mentioned that his wait icon was htc as well, but after changing start icon i have the vista wait icon.

i cant made a own icon :-(( my steps:

1. I use Reshacker to load "shellres.192.dll.0407.mui"
2. i replace the icon (the new icon appears) and i save the file
3. i use the siggner.exe and the text file shows the correct text
4. i put it into my /Windows dir

after softreset the standard icon appears :-(((

to create my icon i use paint shop pro:

1. i save the file (41x36) in .bmp and convert it into .ico with iconShop
2. the .ico file is 41x36 and 24bit (--> is this the problem?????) cause it is not 32bit? Icon shop only convert it to 24bit i think..

Hi, I find this thread really wonderfull but sad to say im not able to make it work! ill be posting the screenshots, i did the instructions installed the Icone Demarrer.cab then browsed \windows\ i did renamed the shelres.96.dll.0409.mui to shelres.96.dll.0409.old.mui but somehow my device generates another shelres.96.dll.0409.mui. then I tried overwriting the existing shelres.96.dll.0409.mui with the one i like in \Start Icons Skins 0409\QVGA - WQVGA\All Start Icons\ which at the moment I`m trying the water element icon. here's the errors.

1st screenshot is the error I get when I pasted the water element shelres.
2nd screenshot tells me that I cannot copy file and it already exist
3rd is the list of shelres* files in \windows\

I wanted to try your mod. But I did not succeed with copying the files from phone to card.

I am using Touch Pro with custom ROM (Panosha) and PDAVIET Manila Dialler.
For copying those files I tried both Windows Commander and Resco Explorer. WC pretended it was copying the files into card, but none was there. Resco said something like "Cannot copy, access denied".

Any tip, please?

It´s not working for me.

I installed the file `Icone Demarrer.cab`
I copied the file ´shellres.96.dll.0413.mui´

I renamed the 0409 to 0413, ´cause I´ve a Dutch (NLD) htc diamond.

Then a soft reset, still having the default windows flag....

Help me please :)

shellres.192.dll.0413.mui is for VGA

That's the problem! Diamond requires VGA :)

Yep, my problem is I cant copy the file from phone memory to Micro SD. TC or Resco, none can handle it. Access denied. I am using TP with Panosha ROM.

Hi Madremiha, I would very much like the Water Element in VGA please if it's not too much trouble. I have just put the blue vista icon on my diamond and it worked a treat, thanks very much. I made it into a .cab UK/US VGA only which is posted here for ease of install/uninstall should anyone want it. :)

I used your shellres.192.dll.0409.mui with superman icon. I copied it to windows folder in my TP. After the reset, it really worked.

Now comes the interesting part. I tried to delete the shellres.192.dll.0409.mui from Windows directory, using TC, but hey, "Acces denied" again. :confused:
Changed attributes of the file, but still not allowed to delete the file.

I am lost.

@crocodile did you use Resco explorer; did you try to rename?
If you want to delete this file to have the original uninstall before the cab.If it's to replace by another juste copy the new in windows and clic replace.
I do as that (with resco) and i never add any problems.

@malik i'll made both Apple colors

@Despera If that's so simple... Open the file from windows named "shellres.96.dll" or "192" for VGA with reshacker and clic on replace icon you'll see all the icon, you must to extract them to see the size and replace by other with the same size.
But it will be better if you open another thread for this.

@uniqueboy I'll made also the water element for you (if i re-find the png :( )
thanks for the cab for those who have VGA device. It's a good idea to make a cab but i prefer to have my folder on my Storage card and just clic on the shellres i want and clic "Copy to"/windows it's faster for me. ;)

In the How to i said the file must be saved in 32bits and i think you saved it in 24bits

I re-save it in 32Bits and i had the good txt signed now

Well, I've had ago for you, remember to change the name of the file according to your locale, make sure you've read the first few posts and installed what you need...blah blah blah, this zip is uk/us but it's just 1 number to change. Hope it works for you I've only done 1 other for myself so far! :)

After some trial and error I have been able to get this to work with no problems. Im somewhat new to this so I thought I would post what I did because I know some people had a hard time understanding how to get this done.

1. Installed Marshall Waitcursor
2. Soft reset
3. Installed Certificate Cab from post#5
4. Soft reset
5. Downloaded Madremiha's start icons from post#1. (make sure you get the right ones)
6. Unzip the "shellres.96.dll.****.mui" found in the folder of the icon you like.
7. Place in /Windows (I used Total Commander)
8. Soft reset

Thats it.

What are all the icons you want and I'll try building a .cab. I have it working with my scull icon now. The only coloured icon in the file you posted, apart from the start icon was a little red thingy over the signal bar. I assume you've done the obvious and installed the certs and the reg import. I made a couple of cabs myself but I did not like the icons and went with this .cab.
I think you need to install the HTC Volume dll to see the speaker icon. It shouldn't affect your start icon. :)
