I have an orange uk Dolphin 35 contract that I took out and got the original HTC Touch (2G)
I have now got a diamond that obvioulsly is 3G capable but Orange refuse to update my SIM card.
Has anybody else experienced something similar and did you get it fixed

You're not the only person I've heard say this. I remember reading a very similar thread on here a while ago. Good luck hope you manage to get it sorted.

What about instead of asking for a new Sim, you call tech support and make out you are unable to make a video call to a friend/family.
As you would require 3G to make video calls, they may suggest they update your sim.

Tried something similar - they just said you have a 2G contract so you can't!!!

did you really think the rom update would also update your SIM?????
i guess you didnt upgrade to the diamond through orange then... bought the diamond sim free?? would it not have been cheaper to u/g?

I don't think i mentioned upgradeing the rom - and no i don't think that a ROM upgrade would change my SIM.
no a ROM upgrade would not be cheaper - it cost me £40! And I cannot u/g until July.
So thank you for you helpful post!!!!

guess you have had it till july then.
if you took out a 2g contract thats what you get.
why should they upgrade you to 3g.that would cost them more.;)

It won't cost Orange anything to upgrade his SIM - data is data. They are just being awkward. I had the very same thing with O2 a couple of years ago so I called them and told them my sim was no longer working and they sent me a new one provisioned correctly for 3g. I'd be very surprised that if Orange sent you a new card that it wasn't provisioned for 3G.

orange are really awkward like that. just tell em your phone wont start, keeps asking you for a sim card even though there is already one in the phone. Blag it.
they did the same thing to me when i got a SE k608i years ago too.

Hi I work for orange and im afraid if you have a 2g phone registered to your account then orange will only supply you with a 2g sim card it doesn’t matter if you have purchased a 3g phone.

Ok!
I dont think I want anything for nothing! I have been with Orange for about 8 years! and always paid them quite a lot for the pleasure.
Orange Dolphin 35 is the same contract whether you have a 2G or 3G phone. No difference - same price. just because I didnt upgrade with them they won't do it and the only reason I didn't upgrade with them is because I committed to a 2 year contract and it is too early (how loyal am I - well not anymore!)

Orange were offering unlimited data a couple of months ago on new contracts - I have unlimited data on my Dolphin 35, but they stopped it soon after.
If you're close to the end of your contract then just speak to retentions.

Orange where offering the unlimited data on most talk plans in july. i must say they call it unlimited but it is subject to a 3gb limit a month.

I just got in with Orange's free unlimited download offer, as long as you had 18 month contract for £35 or more per month. I got Racoon 35. It is ridiculous and incredibly shortsighted of Orange to offer better terms to new customers than existing ones - reminds me of the Nationwide ads running at the moment on UK TV.
How long does your existing contract have left to run? Orange, like all of the other mobile providers in the UK, have a special team to encourage you to stay with them. That team are able to offer much better deals than any one else in the organisation in order to keep you.
I would phone Orange and then hit the Option for "thinking of leaving us", and speak to that team. Tell them you are so annoyed by this policy that the moment you can you are going to leave them. Sound like you really mean it but do not be rude or lose your temper - after all you want them on your side!
Remember that if you do leave in the UK you can ALWAYS move your existing phone number (I have moved mine 3 times now) to a new provider and you will get some very good SIM only deals from them all

Thanks for your support - sadly I am only half way through a 24 month contract (24 months because I mistakenly thought Orange would look after loyal customers)
I think O2 will be getting my business next time round (although not an iPhone :) )

Still will be worth a try - tell them you will only be talking to them one more time after this - and that will be to get your PAC code - and when they try offering you deals then the answer will be "too late - you had your chance and blew it"

I think I might put that in a good, old fasioned complaint letter - on real paper!

Hey dude. Seen your dilema and i can only say the following to possibly assist.
I have a 3G Orange sim sat here that was supposed to be for my replacement handset after losing it. My current sim is 3G so i have no need for it. Basically, what i'm suggesting is this. If you want it, i'll gladly post it to you. Then, simply call Customer 'lack of' Services (LOL) and say you were sent this new 3G sim out and you wish to do an update.
Fine in principle, yes? Personally, i can't see a problem with it. However, if they start coming it and asking where you got it from, i guess that COULD be a prob though saying a friend you stay in touch with after meeting on a recent holiday yadda yadda yadda could work. I dunno, what do you think? Wanna try it?
PM me back dude.

Totally agree with the 'kissy botty but no shouty shouty' comment you made about getting them onside fella! Another tip... if you find someone who knows what they are REALLY talking about in Cussy Services, take their name and extention number and the unit they are at e.g. NT1 (North Tyneside 1). Been there and done that no end of times now and it pays to state the facts in DETAIL and after that, well, you could 'accidentally' mention that you are MOST vexed at the fact that when you rang the other day, the call seems not to have been logged, no notes have been left on the system and to top it all off, the operative never did the usual data protection act (name, first 2 letters of your passowrd etc etc) routine. Note that you add that bit LAST cus after mentioning the other problems you're agrieved with, they then can't chase the said operative and give them a b*llocking... smart move me thinks!
Anyway, never back down and never give in to them. Me.... i'm on a Dolphin 18 monther for 35 squid and i actually wish i'd never bothered. As soon as it's up after 15 months, i'm going onto SIM only cus for what you pay and what you get, it's not worth it. Unlimited texts are a great idea but put it into perspaective... the next tarrif below is what, 400 texts is it or 600? Whichever... i don't even get past 200 these days so... well, says it all really!
Oh and one other thing... @ O2. DON'T DO IT. They are TRASH. O2 used to supply 3 with their signal... 3 had so many complaints from their customers at lack of coverage and various other things, the DUMPED O2 and moved to... guess who... yup... ORANGE.
Stay with em mate and steer WELL clear from O2 (I was with them 2 years ago and their cussy support is a complete and utter FARCE... not gonna go into detail). :(

This will not work orange will only register a sim sent by customer services and they can check, plus you need the correct 3g products on your account file which again only customer services can add. so tbh i dont think you will get what you want

Agreed with that.
There is nothing in the world that you can do to persuade orange otherwise (IMO) I have been with Orange for 14 Years and they still would not change my 2g for a 3g until november. Retail have even stopped doing an instore SIM swap.
The plus side of this is at least I get longer battery life :D

Don't worry; Orange has this tendancy to bill people for their downloads, oddly enough like most mobile co's.

With Orange it really does depend on who you speak with - sometimes I hang up and call back because I realise the person i'm dealing with is an imbecile. Never lose your cool unless it's totally necessary, always think about your approach before you call and have a goal in mind. Persist and you'll be fine.
Btw, to most of the smug people on here - my Orange deal cains yours so pipe down:
£30 p/m
800mins
unlimited texts
unlimited data (500mb fair use)
free Diamond

Nope fraid not.
£24.30 p/m after cashback
unlimited landline calls (fair usage 3,000 mins)
700 mins to any mobile
100 texts (don't use them much)
unlimited data (500mb fair usage)
and free Diamond too
But I am sure somebody will beat that! ;)

I text and talk quite a bit (predominantly to people on mobiles) so the extra minutes and texts make my plan an all round arse kicker for me. But that plan does look good. What do you mean by cash-back btw?
Plus, it's true as I said, my plan is better than those listed on the preceeding pages ;-)

I rarely text so mine was best for me, and most of my calls are to land lines. At the moment I have never got anywhere near any of my limits
I am new to Orange and got a deal with a free Diamond on Racoon 35 through dialaphone, which are part of phones 4u. The rental costs £35 per month but I get 11 months at half price, through a cashback scheme from dialaphone - I get it in 5 payments over the 18 months of the contract. So that equates to £24.30 p/m
They were doing the same deal on one of the other Orange £35 plans, but with unlimted texts rather than landline calls.
This was all back in July - don't think you can get the same now because Orange appear to have stopped the unlimited landline and data offers they had for all £35 18 month contracts.

nice, I got (direct from orange):
£25 p/m (18 month contract)
600 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited data (500mb fair use)
I don't think that's bad for a 'new customer'. It's on cashback but a nicer deal than the phones4u one. They offered me £180 for any old phone, and it would take £10 off my £35 bill every month, so I'm only billed £25 per month. I gave them an old Samsung D500 that didn't work, and had no charger or any extras!
To be fair, I dont think I've gone over 300 mins yet, so I'm happy :D

How did you get on?
I'm in the same exact boat, I can't understand why a company would stop me from spending more money with them as I’d be more inclined to use IE and video call.

I was in a similar situation with Orange.
Because I am still on the ancient "Everyday 50" tarrif, the local Orange shop wouldn't even consider allowing me a fully paid upgrade to a 3G phone let alone give me a 3G SIM  (unless of course I changed tariff)
I phoned retentions politely explaining the situation : I wanted to use mobile internet and potentially spend more, but because they wouldn't even sell me an upgrade phone, the only choice I seemed to have was to migrate elsewhere.
The chap explained that there was NO WAY they could give me a 3G SIM.
On the other hand, they could give me, free, an upgrade to a shiny new Nokia 6500 classic phone. Duh:p
So, next day, I have a shiny new phone with shiny new 3G SIM, plus 2 months free trial of internet services.
So, in summary, if you need a 3G SIM for your PDA, it seems worth talking nicely to Orange retentions.
