So can anyone think of a good reason why i wouldnt want my email to download "as it arrives" versus putting it on a schedule? Assuming I don't get 50 emails a day, which I don't, I'd think "As they arrive" is much better. On a related question, how does the phone know when the email is sitting on the server if it doesn't actively go out and check all the time? Does the exchange server speak directly to ActiveSync and say hey, I've got an email here for download?

As they arrive only works if you have it setup with an Exchange email account, then it does a push mail type effect.

Battery life is greatly increased when using check for every 5 mins, instead of as they arrive.

Depends on the circumstances, I get better battery life using exchange email rather than having it check my pop email every 5 minutes.
I also am on 1X so any time the phone is checking for email my phone goes straight to VM, on exchange it only goes to VM when an actual email is being received.
So it's a win win for me.

Push mail pends a long-duration HTTPS request to Exchange, which Exchange completes when a new mail arrives.
