I ordered my G1 today...so far I've been relatively impressed (though i hate the graphics for the UI...too google like - duh!) I saw a bunch of hands on videos...looks impressive. I'm mad I have to wait until the 22nd of October though.
Also wish they went with a more...sexy Hardware design.

2nd, the flow of the software and the usability of it seem great. Just too bad the whole thing looks looks like it was put together by a bunch of people who wouldn't know what design was if a design school fell down and hit them in the head.

I have been wondering the same thing, and since my son just bought an Ipod Touch, I now have a better understanding of how the Iphone is...
My conclusion is this.... The Iphone, is fantastic, the user interface is fantastic, the App store is just mediocre in my opinion.
My BIGGEST problem with the Iphone is the lack of multitasking! Programs apparently cannot run in the background...
This creates a big problem for me when I want to download RSS feeds, etc, while using other features of the phone.
No Skype, No Slingplayer...
All in all, the Iphone is a beautiful well made phone, but it is crippled.
Android on the Dream, too early to tell, but I assume it will be able to multitask, no decent apps available yet that I like, jury is still out on this..
I keep hearing specs on the phone, and how great Android will be, but until it actually happens, and apps actually get made I think its too early to jump on this one..
So at this point, although Windows Mobile has a crappy UI, I think its still the winner right now. It already has the all the apps, it can multitask..
Android may jump ahead, but its not going to happen overnight, and it has a long way to go to beat the Iphones popularity.

yea i ordered the G1 highly on faith...the UI while intuitive is just not pretty, and im hoping the many linux programmers can make new ones (please God). And I'm hoping the phone itself is just bad in photos like our beloved dash. If i dont like it it can always be returned. so no real worries from me.

Must have put on your tin foil hat! Most of those things you list are not really a problem, for example:
No itunes? Seriously? Its not an apple, I cant get itunes on my dash either
The 8gb limit is a technology limit, it supports SDHC so when the 16, 32, 64gb units arrive they will likely be supported
no data only plans- what? you dont want a phone? Why would you buy it as a pda? there will be others
1gb data cap has been lifted
Google account is needed (free...easy to do LOL) and it still supports other email accounts, whats the big deal?
no sim unlocking? I read the opposite. Tmobile has already said they wont have a problem with letting us unlock. The SYSTEM is not locked either, it is fully OPEN
and on...and on...and on...
Lets not get too wrapped up in the "it doesnt..." until we all know for sure!

I'd like to know the source of the above list and which iphone-user wrote it originally.
But with respect to the SDHC issue....that might not be a software issue. If I'm not mistaken, SDHC readers are different from normal SD readers. It might not just be a driver thing.
The only thing on that list that really bothers me is the lack of stereo bluetooth. It's one thing I've criticized the iphone for since it came out (other than being designed by Apple as a fort-knox of technology.) Couple that with the lack of a headphone jack and it adds insult to injury, given the fact that they push the "your tunes" deal in the marketing.

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner:)
As far as the SDHC, it was my understanding (with full size sd cards anyway) that all the SDHC are handled the same. I thought I remembered the issue being with non-SDHC readers working with some but not all SDHC cards. I thought all SDHC were ok with true SDHC readers. I guess we will see...but just the fact that some Roms allow us to use SDHC cards in our non-SDHC friendly Excal's still gives me hope that its mainly software and technology limits.
Than again, what the heck would I do with 8gb of music, let alone 16, 32, 64...I just dont keep that much music. I guess it will be for you a ll to find out!

Yea that is why I never understood how people can have a 60GB Ipod...thats just crazy...I used maybe 60GB on my home PC all apps and files combined from Adobe to porn. but hey...some people need their muzak.
One thing I don't like is the lack of device storage though...a good 1GB of device storage would've been nice...are expected to store all the apps on a micro SD card?

my issue is not the phone...its the provider.
ive been with tmo for 6 years and they treat me like crap? fuck them. not only are the not the only game in town...they dont even come close to having the best service in town. as i said, they could give me a g1 and free service for life and i would still draw them a map to my ass and tell them to eat it. as i said, its not about the price....if it was i wouldnt have just dropped $700 on a different phone...

With tmo I have learned to take the good with the bad. Every day, going over the bridge from Oregon to Washington I run the risk of loosing my call. Sometimes it doesnt, usually it does. Unfortunately I am a cheap bastard, and I like my rate plan:) If Verizon ever went to a sim card setup I would consider it, but I really didnt like AT-T and friends with Sprint seem to hate it. Cricket...um...no. So for me, its Tmo

well living in so cal, tmo and at&t have pretty much the exact same coverage. the only difference is att HAS a 3g network, roll over etc...there is nothing that tmobile has that att doesnt. so to me its down to how i was treated... and tmobile lost that battle. i will also be putting in a change order at work to migrate all of our tmobile phone over to at&t. if tmob cant treat me right, why would i keep my 80+ tmob phones at work? so i hope in tmobiles eyes that it was worth it....fucking me over on something so stupid...in turn losing almost 100 accounts just from me personally...all over a stupid phone.
