Yes, taking complete control of an open source operating system with a free software development kit. JUST like Apple, in fact, it's practically the same.

If my AT&T contract didn't go on for another 18 months, I'd so buy it. Instead I might wait around on the Android phone for AT&T, if there ever is one.

The phone will not work on at&t 3G.

According to the specs listed on HTC's web site (http://www.htc.com/us/product/g1/specification.html), HS/WCDMA is available on 2100 MHz in Europe and 1700 / 2100 MHz in the US. T-Mobile uses 1700 / 2100 MHz while at&t uses 850 and 1900 MHz.

If you try to take this phone over to at&t (apart from the hassle of trying to get it unlocked), the best that it will operate at is GSM/EDGE, i.e. 2G.

Is it true there is a 1gb cap limit? If it is, it's freaking ridiculous for a phone they are trying to push as a secondary computer. Some awesome features, but hopefully they will increase the cap on it.

After 1GB in a month they limit your speeds "to 50kb/s or less". Like how AT&T's "unlimited" data is really only 5GB, and they start charging after that? T-Mobile decided to just cut the data transfer speed after 1GB. Technically, it's not a cap, your phone can still use data for things you NEED to get done... but at 50 kb/s, forget about downloading files.

Actually I don't see how google is taking control. Yes, they've created it, but the official Google Dev Roadmap shows they're releasing source Q4 2008 (probably somewhere back in December I guess, to make sure that T-Mob G1 sales are not gonna take a dive because of home cooked Android ROMs directly).
Yes they've got the Android Market, but unlike Apple's App Store, they actually leave it open to anyone.
Further more each part of Android on your G1/other Android-running phone is able to be replaced, including dialers, home screens, sms applications, toilet paper ordering programs and whatever comes standard.
I don't see how Google is 'taking control' of it ^^

Exactly, that's what he and I were agreeing on, the original poster feels it's like Apple SOMEHOW. Instead of $99 for the SDK it's free, instead of checking and approving every program you can just make whatever you want, and EVERYTHING is open source. It seems to be pretty much the opposite of Apple, who restricts what program you can use to connect to the computer and what software version you have to have on your phone.

No need to worry now tmobile removed the cap and will deal with people who use it excessively on a case by case basis.

i was never too happy with windows mobile. xda-dev made it possible for me to live with it, but nothing more than that. iphone wasnt the answer either. THIS, on the other hand, is what im talking about (especially with the $179 pricetag). u HAVE to love the OS tho. i cant wait!

Maybe just me, but this is too much Google for any one person. The idea of Google no longer makes sense to me. They have no general industry to be categorized under. I use Google to search and for email, I don't want a device jam-packed with Google everywhere!

So you'd rather have Apple everywhere? Or Microsoft everywhere? Microsoft is a powerhouse, and they charge a ton for everything. Apple has become a powerhouse, and they charge for everything. Google is a powerhouse, and everything but the phone itself is free. Where can you go wrong?

Well It could be that Google tracks your Usage more then (some witty comparison.)

it does no good for them to unlock it if you can only use it on edge with att :(
I will probably have to cry if we don't successfully fully port the operating system :)

There will be other Android phones in the future I'm sure. There's also another section specifically for the Dream, so try to keep these threads over there from now on. :)
