View Full Version : tired of pressing the power button
foxnews

My finger hurts since I have to press the power button (small and flat) too many times a day to wake the diamond from sleep. you can argue that I can set the phone not to sleep but sleep is a must to save battery. using all keys to wake it up can cause any keys to be easily hit by accident, which drains battery fast too. Power button is meant to be used rarely, like the PC reset button.
is there a better way to wake up the diamond? is it possible to configure ONLY the OK (center) button to do this? like the iphone, you just press the OK button. it is big and does not hurt as much?

I've found that the pressure required on the Power Button can depend on the particular Diamond. I've owned two US Diamonds and the first had a difficult Power Button while the second was much easier. Either way, another option to turn it on is to pull out the stylus a short distance - this will wake the Diamond as well. As far as using the center of the D-Pad - I've no idea . . .

even though using the stylus is less painful but it takes more steps: get finger nail in the gap, pull it out, then push it back in. if you do these steps many time over an hour, it would be tidious task.

On my diamond responsivity of the power button depends strongly on where I'm pressing it. You can try to press it different ways and find out where you get most tactile feedback of the micro-switch. I have the impression that for me it is when I'm pressing from behind, more on the left of it.

Yes, but other keys such as volumn, home, back, answer and end key are also unlocked. Anyway, there are all hardware keys available to press opening the phone in additon to the default on/off button. I am now using this option.:)

OK, the way I see solving this is to have the phone wait longer before auto-locking.
To sort this, go to the following..
Start\Settings\System\Power\Advanced..
Go to 2nd option - It's a tick Box labelled "Turn off Device if not used for.." and adjust it to suit..
This is found in the manual..?
Cheers,
Phil.

well, it´s maybe less a matter of laziness than of speed, my last phone was a slider ... slide, it wakes up, slide, it goes to sleep - superquick
with the diamond it takes one step more:
I use the option "do not lock buttons" in combination with S2U2, most often I press the ok button and slide to unlock
to put the phone to sleep, I press the power button or use gyrator: I just have to turn the phone face down, than the screen goes off (with S2U2 locking)
hm, maybe I should have bought the diamond pro, but diamond is sexier :-)

Thank you!
I installed the program for powering off the phone, but instead of doing it prompts a warning windows that asks me if I want to continue without saving and it reboots the phone, it doesnt turn it off. By the way, my power key does the same and I thought it was because I cleaned it with a tissue and alcohol and ruined it... Why could this be?

it's not a program, but a simples shortcut. you can open it with (Pocket) Notepad and see the text in it.

ooops  if the power key does the same then there's some problem with your phone. if an hard-reset doesn't solve it, considered returning it under warranty.

Use a different finger each time you hit the power button...problem solved, no more sore finger as long as you have eight of them. If the eight fingers manage to get sore you may also use your two thumbs.

I too would like to see an option to lock all keys except the center. Makes sense to me since you probably wont bump the center key in your pocket.

What a totally stupid thread!
So the guy cant be bothered to push the power button to wake up his phone, and it makes his finger hurt, give me a break!
Maybe just have the backlight stay on a little longer?
Im not sure why anyone would have to check their phone that much anyway!

What a totally stupid response! To all the other namecallers and haters, just go away if this isn't something you're interested in. Just because you don't need it doesn't mean the other person is lazy..maybe you don't use your phone as much as others?
Why do we need to check the phone that much?
Some of us use these phones for business and personal...I get work emails, calendar event notices all the time, plus my 3 personal emails, texting, and phone calls (wow..its like..what winmo phone is marketed for)
And yes I also have to hit the powerbutton everytime I check something because the screen is off. My screen is off all the time because after I'm done reading the email, text, calendar item, I'll lock it and put the phone in my pocket. Otherwise, next thing I know I'm calling someone..
So rather then posting immature and uncalled for responses, in a thread where you have no business being in, you could always point them to the mods that add similar functionality to what he wants. (like s2u2)
If you're too lazy to do that, but somehow have enough energy to flame, couldn't you simply say it's been answered before?

Actually, waking up with the center button would be a nice feature. While it doesn't "hurt," the power key is a little awkward to press. Not a dealbreaker for me, though...

I totally agree with this, it is not a "hurting" problem, but a "not easy to press" problem.
It would be great if someone comes up with a registry key to make only center button to wake the device up.

This thread is not entirely pointless guys, he has a point. If you have to look at your phone every 5-10 min but you are concerned about the battery life then its an immediate problem.
I thought about this too. I get tired of having to press the power button to get the phone to wake up, you can unlock all buttons but then you have to live with all the other buttons being unlocked. Its definately not a "hurting" problem, instead its more of a "inconvenience" and "hard to reach that small button" problem. Especially if you have a protective case on your phone. You have to dig thru the rubber to press that button.
It would be cool to have the middle button work as the power button but you cant have your cake and eat it too i guess.

well, most of you doens´t see the point.
it´s true that the power off button of diamond its not pratical and it requires some practice to know the best pressure point of these non-practical button.
I used to have p3300 and the on/off button much better positionated and more practical.
The thing is that many times i have to press it several times to activate the dawm button, it does not hurt my finger, hand or arm but for shure that this button its the worst i've experienced.
Anyway it is a sugestion made by our friend foxnews and we must respect that.

I Agree with this guy. After some hours i see the power button is too hard to press... I need try press many times to turn my cellphone on. My Diamond is Brazilian model DIAM130 that are shipped with extended battery.
I think is a good idea wake up the cellphone only with enter button.
Other suggestions is one app that lock diamond if you put the cellphone upside down in your pocket... So this will prevent cell phone be turned on until he is positioned in normal position, in normal position you can still turning on the cellphone with any button like in "not lock buttons behavior".
Sorry for bad english.

Oh, exactly the topic i was looking for !
How about a 'shake to wake up' app using the gyro? Would that be possible?Yes, it's what i would like.
When i pick up my phone from my pocket, the phone is in Portrait and/or Face Up mode, and using the gyro, that should wake up the screen.
Gyrator 2 does the invert fonctionc :/
Do you have a soft to try to wake up our screens using gyro ?

It might not "hurt" but no doubt it is inconvenient compared to the center button. In fact, I activate all keys and combine it with S2U2. It is just easier and more convenient, especially for one handed use and pulling the device out of my pocket. I'm sure a lot of people would love to have only the center button activate the screen. Grow up guys.

According to the programmer of Gyrator 2, and many others, the accelerometer (or "gyro" if you prefer) cannot be used whilst the phone is on suspend mode (i.e., after pressing the power button, aka, when the phone is "powered off"). That is because in suspend mode the accelerometer cannot be polled. Ergo, no chance to do this, at least with the current knowledge.
Anyway, using gyrator 2 you can set the phone to go in suspend mode (i.e., mimic the pressing of the power button) when you move the phone to inverse-portrait position (aka upside down) or face down. This way you can simply insert the phone in your pocket without worrying of pressing the power button first or leave it on the table upside down. This will save you "half" of the finger hurting presses :)

Dunno if this is an option, but here's the way I get around this when I'm actively using the phone:
1. Set the "turn off backlight" power option to something less than the "turn off device" option.
2. When the backlight turns off, just brush your thumb across the center button. You don't even have to push it because the touch pad is enough to re-wake the phone and turn the backlight back on.
I've gotten in the habit of not even waiting for the backlight to turn off. I just wave my thumb at the button every couple minutes to keep it alive.
Hope that helps!
