View Full Version : Polaris 3D Driver - No disrespect, but what can we do with it?

So I know for months groups of people have been working to bring us the Polaris 3D Driver. It sounds like they've accomplished their goal, and I've read through many of the threads. But in the end, I don't understand what we can use it for.
After all, I don't have the "lights" app, or any other test programs to run on my Touch Cruise. And I don't know what "basic" apps the 3D driver works with.
I've seen people post that their You Tube app works better or worse after installing the driver. Does it really make a difference? Do I need a special version?
If I'm watching Divx files on the Touch Cruise, is there a special movie player required to have better performance? Is Window Media Player now more effective after the driver is installed?
And if I want to uninstall, there is mention of a .cab to "fix" your Touch Cruise, but I never saw a link to it.
So many questions, but no basic thread with answers. Maybe someone could post some here? Thanks in advance for the hard work, and clearing up just what the driver can do.

@Merkman:
I think the 3D driver will be usefull to newer roms that use the TouchFLO 3D :D

This thread is pretty long. I followed it very closely but still I have no clear picture of the driver capabilities. I think that many users are interested in answers to the following questions
1. In what commonly used applications we can see real gain of the driver? (I mean not D3D test applications and benchmarks)
2. Does any application can take advantage of the driver? or only applications specifically written for this driver?
3. Users that do not use 3D manilla, 3D games and video playback - do they need this driver?
I will appreciate if users that have practical experience with the driver will try to answer these questions

Does the 3D driver accelerate video playback (e.g. DivX)?

I will try to answer your questions (and that's what the P3D driver questions and issues thread is for)
1. For now, the best example is TouchFlo3D. It's currently being ported to qvga devices. This uses 3D ONLY.
2. Our goal is to create a driver that works with most 3D programs/games. Bare in mind that this driver is ONLY for devices with a MSM7200 chipset.
3. In short: no.
Does the 3D driver accelerate video playback (e.g. DivX)?
No.

I have a question...
Does the 3D driver __break__ compatibility with apps/games which otherwise run well without the 3D driver?
