Upgrade ROM question

Is it possible to upgrade the rom to another later version without risking a complete wipe of data? Does all the data get wiped on the phone or does the internal memory storage get left? it just seems a pain to update if you lose everything all the time

It will delete everything on your memmory, except the data on the 4gig

just save all ya data to pc before ya install any rom then ya can replace anything back on to your device easily
