View Full Version : [Q] Samsung Jack i616 - Can't Hear Calls - Callers can't hear me

Unicornasaurus
26th October 2008, 04:22 AM
I recently just got a Samsung Jack i616 and it had Windows Mobile 6.0 on it. I upgraded it with the official 6.1 upgrade from Rogers, and everything upgraded fine. But when I call someone, or someone calls me I can't hear them and they can't hear me. I know the phone worked before the upgrade, but now I'm not sure as to why it's doing this. I've tried restarting the phone, but nothing has worked. I haven't found anything on Google, so I thought I'd post it in the forum that I know has come up with so many miracles that made my HTC Touch Elf so enjoyable.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

I am having the same problem. have you resolved the problem. I would like to see your solution as this is driving me up a wall.

P.S. I am on the fido network

I have experienced this same issue. I bought a new i616 on the Fido network, upgraded to wm6.1, made a test phone call, and then removed the sim.

While the sim was removed I setup all the software I use (took about a week) and played around with the phone (GPS, etc) to be sure I understood it's capabilities. And then I put the sim card back in - exactly the same issue you have had - it makes and receives calls but there is no sound on any end.

I fixed this by doing a hard reset (with format) - immediately after the format, I tried a test call again and it worked (sound on both ends). I then proceeded to setup the phone again (this time with the sim card still in it) and at the end of installing all the software, the phone still worked.

I have no idea why it stopped working in the first place.

The code you mention does a EEPROM reset which appears to be a carrier unlock on some phones - is your phone now carrier unlocked?

On a side note, the software/hardware on this i616 appears to be a complete train wreck - the GPS sometimes works, sometimes doesnt, sometimes the phone does not allow sound when making phone calls, the bluetooth doesnt connect to some of my devices that have never had any connection issues in the past, etc. These are pretty fundamental issues. I have had a couple of HTC WM phones for the past several years and I have never experienced anything like this with them - perhaps the Jack will grow on me but just setting it up has been a pretty poor experience.

Well, it happened again - no sound on either end during a phone call. I havent done anything since the last rebuild - eventually the sound stopped working.

A full reset with format fixes the problem but I think I have reached the limit - I am not going to rebuild it again because I have no idea when the phone stops working - I do not know what to do differently.

I am going to return this phone for something else - this phone has been remarkably bad (especially for a phone which gets great reviews).

Any ideas what is going on?

So far the only way to resolve this is the format... rogers says the phone is defective but considering the issue is more than just me I expect a replacement jack is not a guarantee that this issue will go away...

Hi,

I think I have found the culprit that is causing the problems. whe you do an unlock for application, the problem will start happening. not installing the unlock application the phone will work fine.

the only real benefit for the unlock application is getting the gps to work on com4. most applications will work without running unlock.

if anyone has way around this I am listening.

What unlock application are you talking about? Since I fixed the problem myself, I've only had the problem once, which was probably from trying to install a bunch of applications to my phone(which I fixed just by restarting the phone).

The * code that I posted was from the BlackJack II Rogers 6.1 Instructions

I believe he is talking about the application unlock. There are two things I put on my phone that require it - the GPSID thing (connect the GPS to a COM port), and WM5torage (phone looks like a USB drive).

I will format, and will not apply the unlock, and see what happens.

Thanks.

So I've been running into this problem more and more often now. It's seemingly random as to what triggers it. I've tried pulling the battery..turning it on and off..nothing seems to work. I don't really want to do a full format because I don't want to lose all my stuff on there.

I've also found out even with a bluetooth headset, I can't hear anything..I also can't hear anything if I plug in the headset that comes with the phone.

Hopefully we can find out a solution as to why it does this.

Ah so I am not alone.

My fido jack on 6.1 that is also application unlocked (Some of my apps do require this to be done, one way or another..) is doing the same thing. Sometimes I just have to reboot a few times in a row and it comes back, but as of this morhning I've done it 3-4 times and still no sound.

bmac.to

I have given up. I have decided not to app unlock the phone - it is the only way to guarantee the phone still functions as a phone and I have tried many, many things to get it to work. This definitely limits the capabilities of this phone.

This phone is a disaster - the GPS does not connect through a com port like almost every other GPS device on the market, not all of my bluetooth devices work with the phone, and if you app unlock it, it stops working as a phone.

I like the scroll wheel though.

any progress on this?

i have same issue:

-i616 (fido/roger jack)
-want to get GPS working
-but app unlocker will break sound (no sound during calls) on WM6.1

i think the unlockers are only for i617 blackjack2, but not for the canadian version...

any ideas???

I am still trying to figure out the root cause of this problem. Yesterday it happened again to me so I pulled out the battery, removed the sim card, and then reinstalled everything and it worked - no hard reset required. It hasnt happened since so I havent tried the sim card removal again, so it could just be a fluke.

But, if it does turn out to be sim card related, is it possible we are using older version sim cards? The phone came with a new one but I just stuck to using my older one. What abaout everyone else - new or old sim card?

Thanks.

I also have the samsung jack (fido) i616 and also cannot hear the calls on both ends on occasions...even prior to app unlocking so it may not be the app unlock that is causing the issue.

I would turn off and on the phone and it would work again.

Is there a permanent solution to resolve this?

Thanks in advance

I was scanning the xda-developer site as I have both a TytN II and a BJII and thought do I bother telling my story or not - I figured if I can save someone else the hassle, the Major headaches, the time and the Expense it is worth it. So hear goes, get a coffee and put your feet up as this is a long story. If you just wanna know the outcome and solution skip to the end..otherwise just settling in for the story.

Like many of you I bought an BJII from a well known Chinese Mall(PM) and at the same time got it unlocked. I got the phone home and immediately upgraded it to the Fido WM6.1 official rom as I had been using 6.1 on my Tytn II forever without any major headaches. This was my first mistake. (actually my 2nd the first was buying the dam phone in the first place). Right after the upgrade, after making a call, the caller could not hear me and I could not hear them. Only a Hard reset(HR) fixed the problem. After the reset, I then proceed to install some smartphone apps, (sda application unlock, MoDaco smartphoneGpsActivator, MS smartphone GPSID, Garmin Mobile XT etc) after installing my seventh app I decided to make another test call. I encountered the same problem, so I set about uninstalling one app at a time to see which one was the culprit. This did not work and only a HR would fix the problem. This nonsense installing, hard reseting went on for about a week.

Frustrated I took the BJII back to PM, but the dude did not want to give me my money back - he claimed because I had upgraded to 6.1 any software upgrades regardless of whether it was an official rom or not was not covered under warranty. At this point I was not sure whether I was facing a software issue or a hardware issue. Anyway, I took the phone home, and this nonsense with the phone and calls went on for weeks. The last straw for me was being in the mall with my wife and she's calling me and I did not hear the phone ring. Was she mad or what? So to prove I was not dodging her and eying up the babes I got her to call me while I had the phone in my hand and sure enough the phone was ringing, but there was no sound. We did this 4 times- I switched the phone on & off each time - so another HR - problem goes away.

I am Hugely frustrated by this point , however, I set about reinstalling my apps - as a side note one of the apps that I wanted to install was SPB backup 2 - BJII didn't like it so I could not use it hence having to reinstall each app everytime 1 by 1 after a HR. Anyway, this demon possessed phone would at least 3 times a week need to be HR. I was so frustrated that I decided to try the At&t rom,(Mistake #2) it crashed in the middle of the upgrade and bricked the phone. It would not turn on period. Now before you start, I am not a newbie, I have been messing around with windows smartphones and pocketpc for years - in fact my first pocketpc was a compact and it was grey scale, my first ever pda was a Psion, so I know how to flash phones, and cook my own roms.

Anyway, I took it back to PM and the dude wanted to charge me $150 bucks to fix it. I walked out the shop and tried another vendor he said that he would reflash it for $50. He had the BJII for 3 days and in the end could not fix it.

I took the BJII back to the original guy, I tell you I am a pacifist but I am ready to kill at this point and we almost get into a fight as I was wholly convinced at this point that it was a hardware issue. He refused to send it back to Samsung as he reckoned they would charge me an arm and a leg to fix it as they would know straight away that this was a software flash that went wrong. In the end he said that he could fix it for $80 bucks- given that I wanted this phone and I wanted it working(it is great for messaging) I said fine. Yes he did get it working, but had to install a new logic board(motherboard). Thankfully he also installed WM6.0. I decided to leave well alone this time and just install my apps. I have had the phone back for 2 weeks now and have been using it everyday and have had none of those call or sound issues.

I suspect that there is a serious problem with the 6.1 upgrade and it has nothing to do with application unlocking the phone or any other 3rd party software. No presenting any keys in any combination is going to magically fixed this call issue - so please don't be fooled. My advice if you want it, is to Not upgrade to 6.1 at all. WM 6.1 offers some nice features, but not enough to go through this amount of headache, frustration and money.

Anyway peeps Happy New Year.
And avoid WM6.1.

Smartb - I liked the story despite the fact that I cried more than I laughed. Seriously, I couldn't agree more with you. Indeed this 6.1 upgrade is the cause of our pain. I've spent hours doing the same thing you have less the ROM installs.. Mine came with the Rogers 6.1 ROM installed.

I'm at a loss for what to do. My latest venture is to compare registry settings with a HR image and after installing a software that breaks the phone. The software I tested with that always broke the phone was SPB Wireless Monitor..

I could ALMOST live with the issue if SPB Backup worked. But of course, it breaks the phone too!

So far, I've successfully gotten these softwares installed without the phone breaking:

- MS GPSID
- TCPMP + FLV Plugin
- Activesync with Exchange
- Garmin Mobile XT
- Facade 1.4.0
- CHome Configurator

These break the phone:

- SPB Backup
- SPB Wireless Monitor
- SDA Unlock

Any ideas how I could downgrade to WM 6.0? My phone came pre-installed with WM6.1

Dave, I don't think you can because there is no 6.0 rom floating about out there believe me I tried. I spent hours looking for one and couldn't find any. There were other roms for the 607, but I wouldn't risk using those. Sorry Mate.

I am having the same audio problem described here. Hard reset, which is every "tech support agent's" answer to everything, is NOT NECESSARY.

I have popped the battery out and stuck it back in and this has worked, other times it has not.

I have turned the phone off and on again and this has worked, other times it has not.

Rogers is sending me the 6TH REPLACEMENT Refurbished phone I have received, I may ask them to start sending 2 at a time, just to be sure.

They won't allow a hardware switch, they will only replace the phone with the same phone. They will try to get me to take a hardware upgrade though for like $200.00 and make me agree to 3 more years.

I am only hoping that the next refurbished one I receive will have this 6.1 bug fixed.

Here's my take on this...

Had this problem from pretty much day 1 with the i616 from Fido, it would occur randomly and intermittently (I could go 3 weeks without experiencing it). But about 2-3 weeks ago, it seemed to be stuck like this, switched to my nokia phone, called fido and they sent a replacement. In the meatime looked for something to backup the current phone to transfer everything to the replacement. That ended up being sprite backup.

Got new phone, made some calls it worked fine. Backed up old phone with sprite and restored to new phone. New phone now has same problem. Start uninstalling, no joy, eventually wipe clean, try restoring again, same problem, wipe clean, install a few of my apps, works fine for a few days, then same problem. Uninstall all 3rd party apps except SK Tools Standard, audio works again.

Wipe device install only a few apps, working fine, this morning I install sprite backup and audio goes away, uninstall sprite audio comes back...

Next send message to sprite support as follows, we'll see what they have to say, next step would be to backup, then wipe and only install sprite and see if problem reoccurs or whether it's an interaction with one of the apps below.

Samung Jack SGH-i616 (aka BlackJack II) running windows mobile standard 6.1, call audio stops after installing sprite 6.5.4.8. This consistently happens when installed and problem goes away once uninstalled.

It's a manifestation of this problem

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=439620

The following other software is installed on the device.

Webis Flexmail 4.1 beta (bulld 3317)
Webis Pocket Informant 8.52 beta (build 2339)
(note problem occurs with non beta versions of both apps)
Sk Tools Standard 3.3.3.1
Synthesis SyncML Pro 3.0.2.22
Total Commandder/CE 2.51

The rest are the standard apps that ship with the device in rom.

Yeah, it's such a weird flakey thing when and how it happens.

I've on my first replacement phone from Fido, it's happened a few times, but usually taking the battery out resolves it. If that doesn't, generally a hard wipe and restore are the only ways to get it working again.

I've noticed a few other things. Depending what's open in the background when you power off the phone strongly affects this problem. Having flexmail running in the background connected to my IMAP server and/or an Exchange server over activesync will cause this problem EVERY TIME. Although not every time will result in a full wipe, generally the pulling the battery fixes it.

My phone had been running beautifully for the past few weeks until I accidentally powered it off with flexmail running, since then, it's been stuck with no TELEPHONE audio. I say telephone because a SIP VoIP client is able to make and receive calls just fine even though I can't do the same for GSM calls.

So I am back to my Nokia until I get around to wiping and reloading everthing for about the 100th time. :-(

Other than accidentally formatting my phone due to entering that code I haven't had to hard reset my phone for a long time. I simply keep rebooting the phone. As long as it takes and trust me sometimes you have to reboot 8-10 times or more. Just keep doing it and the audio will come back. Remove the MicroSD card if you have one as well during the reboots.

A quick way to check if the audio is back is to hold the silent key on the keyboard. If the silent profile activates the audio is back. If holding this key doesn't activate the silent mode then it's still broken and you need to reboot. This is an alternative to calling the VM system to check if it's working.

Cheers,
dave

That's interesting about the silent key, I'll try that.

Here's another data point. I've had my secondary line/sim card in the phone and the phones been turned off for at least 3 or 4 days and occaisionally plugged in to charge.

I had planned to backup everything, then wipe and reload today. I thought I'll just give it a try and it worked, I turned it off, put my regular sim card in and it stopped working, put back backup sim card and it worked again...

I can't think of any reason the simm card would affect this, but there you have it.

Note the sim card that works fine is a 3g one while the previous one has followed me for years across various NON 3g phones.

sibble-comp
18th April 2009, 10:31 PM
Sadly after 20+ reboots, it's still not working with my regular sim card. I've tried doing soft resets via software, hold the power button down until it turns off, clicking the power button and choosing shutdown. But no joy...

Booted with no sim card, and the holding the silent key works again, put in backup sim card and it works, so looks like I need to replace my sim card, any other suggestions?

I got my Jack about 2 months ago, as soon as I got it home I installed 6.1. in the first couple days I installed viigo, google maps, and microsoft live search.. I also had setup my imap email... after a month I installed the Microsoft MyPhone... 3 days after, no sound... I had to do a hard reset to get it back.. afterwards I installed just MyPhone again and re-synced my phone, 2 days later.. it happened again. I proceeded to a hard reset, installed MyPhone and re-synced, then uninstalled MyPhone... 2-3 weeks went by, I thought I had it licked, but 2 days in a row now it happened again... with no extra apps.

One continuous problem I had with this phone, not sure if I have this in common with the rest of you, is that I work in a fringe area where I continuously loose service.. 1 bar at best. And every second day I have to power down the phone and back on to get a data connection again. Just curious if the rest of you are often in low service areas... just thinking this might be a possible cause of the 'no sound' issue.

Today my phone took a beating as it flew across my vehical when I couldnt answer a call as a result of no sound.... so I hope to find a resolution before my phone meets pavement...

I can not believe that Samsung will not make WM6.0 available to downgrade until this problem can be resolved.

Personally, this is the last Samsung device I will buy!

Rick76
9th May 2009, 04:29 PM
Well, after many hours of screwing around and trying to determine the cause of the "lost sound" issue, I am going to go out on a limb here. I do not think it has anything to do with hardware, SIM cards, key presses, settings or installed software (at least as it may relate to a particular installed program). Rather, if you install a new program and it needs to reboot your phone to complete the installation, then yes.

The process of elimintation and logical thinking dictate that it is an OS bug. Something in WM6.1 is not consistent in loading during start-up. And, as many users have not reported this problem, I am also going to guess that it has something to do with the carrier customization software interacting with WM6.1 at start-up.

If it was strictly a bug within WM6.1, I would think that we would be seeing more reports from users of other devices and carriers as well.

Rogers/Fido...the ball is in your court. I know this means nothing and even worse, absolutely nothing will get resolved, but whatever happened to "doing the right thing"?

Big business blows!

Hi Rick,

Just to let you know that you are not alone in this case. I totally endorse your statements. I'm at my second phone and same thing, don't know what to do. I sent emails to Samsung and no go.

We are not alone, here's another forum that discuss that!

Strange, the SGH-i617 don't have that issue so like you said, it's probably Rogers implementation.

I've lost some time on this issue and here's what I've found by diffing registry before and after this issue happened:

These values are AFTER a hard reset, (BEFORE - there was no sound during calls):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Volume
Volume = 1717986918 0x66666666 (was 0)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\State\MITsMan
MITs_HomeScreenReady = 0 (was 1)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\Keypad
BKLState = 2 (was 0)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\Battery
BKLState = 2 (was 0)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\UFN
Suspend = 0 (was 1)

The way I tested:
Installed .NetCF 3.5 and rebooted - in my case it's enough to get the issue.
Also noticed that uninstalling an aplication (or all) sometimes repairs the phone without having to do a hard reset!

Platform: Fido, i616

Setting these keys to these values won't solve anything... (There should be some software reconfiguring the drivers somehow - probably reseting the phone transceiver and get the UFN out of the suspended state (?).)

Thanks

I think I've solved this! It wasn't the registry, it was the mitsman.exe service! (i can't remember the pass or mail to nosound_bj2 user so I've created this new one)

http://cid-ebfabf4eb79cb440.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/FixSoundInCalls.CAB
The package cannot be installed on “Storage Card” so please select “Device”.

In detail:
All that the application does is start mitsman.exe if it's not already running (too many mitsman.exe running and the phone will become unstable).

I have created a link that will also execute the program at startup (the program will just start the service and terminate almost immediately, not occupying any RAM). You can manually execute it whenever you loose sound, using a Start Menu shortcut.

Removal is made through Settings | Remove Programs | ChrisP Fix Sound In Calls.

I don't have my phone unlocked so please tell me if this works for that case as well...
