Pages : [1] 2

Since we have all been having fun watching the stock market recently, I decided to write a quote/chart app, using the style of that fruity excuse for a phone as a springboard. So I present for your enjoyment an app called "Ticker Tape".

Notes:

Requires .Net CF 3.5 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e3821449-3c6b-42f1-9fd9-0041345b3385&DisplayLang=en)
See the 2nd post for revision history and features.
Please read the FAQ and the planned Future Features (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2846676&postcount=2) - your question or suggestion may already be there.

See this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2979612&postcount=237) for a version translated into Russian. Resource files will be supported soon for translation into whatever languages you want.

As always, your thoughts and bug reports are appreciated!

UPDATED Nov 24, 2008 to version 0.5.1 (see next post for revisions)

To Avoid Losing Your Custom Lists:
The install might overwrite your data file. If you want to keep your existing lists, make a copy of TickerTape.dat before installing, and copy it back after installing.

Many thanks to those who have donated to this project!

Your continued support might inspire me to actually finish it. :D

FAQ

Can you add the ^XYZ index and the XYZ stock to TickerTape?
NO. The data is downloaded from Yahoo, because it is the only free service I know of. If Yahoo doesn't have it, then I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about it for this app.
The data is not scraped off a web page, so sites that display the data you want (even Yahoo's own real-time quote pages) are not useful to Ticker Tape.
Yahoo (and therefore Ticker Tape) has information for a lot of the world markets, but there are some markets it does not provide. Again, I'm sorry, but that's just how it is.

How do I get quotes for Company X?
Find the ticker symbol here (http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup/all), and add it to Ticker Tape.
I added a ticker, but there's no data. Why?
You probably need an exhange extension at the end of the ticker. Find the correct ticker symbol here (http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup/all).
Where can I get a list of indices?
Here (http://finance.yahoo.com/indices?e=dow_jones) for US indices, or here (http://finance.yahoo.com/intlindices?e=americas) for major world indices.
Where can I get a list of currency exchange symbols?
Here (http://finance.yahoo.com/currency)
How do I get the price of Gold, Crude, Lean Hogs, and other commodities futures?
Use the symbols found here (http://finance.yahoo.com/futures)
What stock exchanges are available in Ticker Tape?
A list of them is here (http://finance.yahoo.com/exchanges).
How long are the quotes delayed?
This depends on the exchange. The delays are listed here (http://finance.yahoo.com/exchanges). Most indices are real-time.
How much data is downloaded?
Quotes: ~80 bytes per ticker (~480 bytes for a full list)
Charts: ~2.5KB each
Can Ticker Tape do [insert feature here]?
Yes, of course it can. The next version will do your laundry too.
I installed it on my non-VGA device, and it looks funny.
Ticker Tape was initially designed for VGA. This *is*, after all, a forum for Diamonds. The latest version has been tweaked to support QVGA, but there might be some areas that still need work. It does not and will not have support for square-screen devices.

Future Features

Custom symbols for "Compare To" charts
Implement settings for download rate in off-market hours
Search feature to find ticker symbols
Adjust times based on regional settings
D-pad navigation in menu and other places.
Ability to rearrange/insert lists and tickers
Advanced ticker properties, such as notes, held positions, and alarms
Ability run in a TF3D tab - THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO BE POSSIBLE AT THIS POINT - See this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3012823&postcount=259)
More adjustments for non-VGA resolutions
Import/export lists

GeckoDev, I'm still waiting for a decent stock app and this looks very promising. I'll be an avid supporter if you keep developing.

My only suggestion, and you've probably already thought of this, would be to include enough options in settings for what happens over the data connection based on the usage of the app.

For example: have checkboxes/choices in settings for options like such as:

-Continue streaming in realtime when program is minimized
-Prompt user that data is still streaming when program is minimized or unfocused after: (then add choices for 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, etc)
-Do not download any data when program is minimized
-Only update manually
-Update every: (choices of times)

You get the idea, something like that. The point being that those of us that don't have unlimited data connections, warnings and settings should be there to prevent accidental overages of data usage. A streaming stock app would be a very easy app to end up forgetting is on and using data and causing overages, whereas at least with a broswer, you're most likely eventually just going to end up parked on one page with no further data being streamed, if you accidentally leave the browser open.

I like those options. I had planned on the last two already, but the first few for what to do when minimized are great ideas.

And here I thought I was taking a day off ... :)

I have been searching for a suitable charting program for over three years. I have tried them all and consider all of them unsuitable. I have had to make my own local HTML files with links to www.stockcharts.com/avantgo mobile charts to deal with the shortcoming.

This Apple-like program would be awesome. If you put this on Handango, I would buy it.

Recommendation: as a first attempt, you could do a lot worse than the Apple interface, so I say stick with it for the first version.

Are you using Yahoo! data for this? I prefer Bloomberg, but Yahoo is OK.

Are you using Yahoo! data for this? I prefer Bloomberg, but Yahoo is OK.

Yes, Yahoo is the only free feed I know of. The Bloomberg feed costs several thousand in subscription fees. Some apps out there screen-scrape to get their data, but I think that approach is prone to error, so I'm just getting the raw data, which is why it downloads so few bytes.

The problem with the Yahoo feed is the delay, even though I'm telling it to send me real-time quotes. It appears to ignore that part (except for indexes). Does anyone know of a free feed that provides real-time data?

Yes, this is fantastic. I think MSNBC has a feed, but not sure of how interactive it is (think I read that somewhere from a developer). Very pleased with the appearance, and look forward to customizing to my portfolio.

FYI...I selected "This is amazing" in your poll, and not the second one. I felt it unfair to send you half of my gains since you're not willing to take half my losses (down 56% in the last 45 days...UGH).

I don't know of any that are free unfortunately. All the services want "power-trader" subscription fees to be able to get true realtime. If anyone finds a true free realtime feed, let us know!

In the meantime, a delay is fine with me since I won't be making spot trading decisions based on what my phone is telling me at any given second.

This program is amazing. I like it very much.

Just some ideas for further development.

1. Please add an "exit" command. I don't know how to exit this program.
2. For the updates, please add a timer on it since market time is only from 9 to 4pm.
3. can you make it response to direction keys?

Thanks.

GeckoDev,

Thanks for developing this Ticker Tape.
I'm haviin Diammondan don'thave access to the options inTicker Tape.
A second problem is the decimals. At the moment the DJI is at 9.325,01 and on Ticker Tape it is showing 32501,00
The same for Nasdaq 1.720,95 and showing 72095,00
Maybe it has to do with local settings because I live in Belgium.

Thanks

It would be great if this program can be built for CF 2.0.

Thanks for all the great ideas!

Things I'll add soon:
-- Exit button - for now it's like a lot of mobile apps ... you exit from the task list
-- Setting for download rate in off-market hours
-- Use of D-pad for naviagation
-- Adjust for regional settings in numeric display
-- Enable the other settings (download behavior when minimized)
-- Enable comparison charts

As for getting quotes for international (non-US) markets, I'll have to look into that. If anyone knows of a FREE feed that supplies that data, let me know.

I had also considered running it in a TF3D tab (that was actually why I started working on this app), but there's the issue of screen real estate. The TF slider bar and the additional title bar cut out a significant amount of available space.

As for CF2.0 -- sorry, it has to be 3.5

Keep up all the great feedback!!! I know it's probably a boring app when the markets are closed, sorry for the Friday evening update. :) I'll try to knock out some of the easy stuff from the list and post another update soon.

Is ^FTSE an index on the London exchange? Maybe the trick for all the international exchanges is the extension at the end, like *.L in your examples.

Yes ^FTSE is the yahoo symbol for the FTSE 100 index.

If you go to http://finance.yahoo.com and do a search on a company it will give you a list of its symbols. E.g. BARC.L is barclays capital on LSE, BARC.VX is barclays captial on VTX

A list of all the exchanges I can get data from is here:

http://finance.yahoo.com/exchanges

It covers a lot of exchanges, so if you put the listed extension (e.g. *.F or *.HK) at the end of the ticker symbol, you should be able get quotes for it.

Sorry, I didn't see any Polish exchanges listed.

The problem is that it needs to have the same URL, so AppToDate knows where to download it from. But each time I update it here, the attachmentid will be different, so the URL will be different. :(

I just remembered that I do have a website. :D It's a long story. Anyway, I'll have to see what I can do.

Love this apps. It's better than iphone's.
Hope you can include other exchanges so that the followings can work.
DAX (Symbol: ^GDAXI)
CAC (Symbol: ^FCHI)
Gold Nov 08 (Symbol: GCX08.CMX)
Crude Oil Dec 08 (Symbol: CLZ08.NYM)
The symbols are taken from Yahoo Finance and working on EquityXpert. However, I prefer this than the EquityXpert. Really hope you can help soon.
Thanks again for your wonderful inventions.

Can somebody please help?

@citats - What symbol are you trying to use?

@cellneuron - It is actually downloading the chart image, not data. So even if you're going from a longer time to shorter time, it still needs to download the image (especially in the case of 1d/5d charts, since these would be changing all the time).

@th1nm1nt - Thanks for all the support! Yes, I'm definitely updating the icon in the next build. I just grabbed the first one I came across. :)

@ykyong - The indexes you listed should work ... I just tried them. The gold and crude tickers exposed a "undocumented feature", so thanks for pointing it out! ;)

@EVERYONE - If a symbol doesn't work in TickerTape, but it does on Yahoo Finance, please let me know! As ykyong helped me discover, some symbols return some weird things in their data that I'll need to account for.

GeckoDev,
Thanks for yr 0.3 cab. The DAX, CAC, crude oil and gold tickers worked great.
This apps is almost perfect now....just a few more small problems...
(1) Currencies tickers: I tried USDEUR=X, USDSGD=X without success. Please check.

Hi GeckoDev,
This is a wonderful app, especially for us financial 'experts' (any replies to this will be off-topic!), however certain tickers don't produce data in the list (like eurusd=X, or ^XU100), yet when you select them the chart appears...

Apart from this glitch, I can only agree with all other posters here: great app!!

Yes, thanks very much .... how you managed to find it, as strangely I was not able to find it, seems like yahoo finance has little of its' own ticker indexing going on.

BTW, when I press Compare To and Settings, nothing happens, no window popups for respective options when selected. Also how do I add it as TF3D Tab, as you have mentioned on your second post .... or are you still working on them? I have installed clean your latest 0.3 version.

Hello guys,

Thanks for this great and good looking app, exactly what i was waiting for.
For all wondering how to add a stock informations.
Go to : http://finance.yahoo.com/
Choose your indice (for example Dow-Jones), then open the page of this stock indices and you'll have the shorcut information (just after the name of the value you choose) to find this value using the Ticker Tape app. (for the dow-jones indice, it is : ^DJI).
Working for many international stock exchanges.

Hello,

at first: Great Job... Yahoo Finance isn't the best Dataprovider, but it quite works.

Is it correct that nothing happens when clicking on settings?

Can you add an alarm function, so that the program can run in background and notify the user when quotes changes?

Hi everyone, thanks for the kind words!

Exactly. It's as simple as this: The data comes from Yahoo. If Yahoo doesn't give me data for the symbol you enter, I can't fix it. Go to Yahoo and look up the symbol you want ... the symbol might be different from what you expect. If you can't find your stock or index on Yahoo, chances are that TickerTape won't find it either.

So for everyone asking about this & that symbol, try to look it up here. (http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup/all)

I'm loving the great ideas that have come from everyone. Keep it up! Happy trading today!

Can you give me an example? I'm curious to see if I get 3 decimal places in the data.

certain tickers don't produce data in the list (like eurusd=X, or ^XU100), yet when you select them the chart appears...

I found out that the data for eurusd=x did not return the previous close, which caused TickerTape to skip displaying it (since it does the calculations first). So I have changed some things around so that it will display as much information as possible and only skip what it can't show. So in this case, I'm seeing the last price, but there's no change info. You'll see this in the next update (0.4).

how do I add it as TF3D Tab, as you have mentioned on your second post .... or are you still working on them?

That's still a future feature. ;)

The Settings and Compare To charts are not yet implemented (see 2nd post).

I agree Yahoo isn't the best, it's free, so it works well for software that is donation-ware. Paid data feeds are quite expensive. The alarms are a good idea, I'll put some thought into that and give all sorts of options for it.

For some stocks (for all stocks @ .as) the charts 1d and 5d is not available.

There's not much I can do about that, sorry. As previously mentioned, the data and charts come from Yahoo (free). When a chart says "Chart Not Available", that's actually the chart image that Yahoo sends back.

i tried with spanish index ^IBEX and work perfectly but a stock like TELEFONICA IN YAHOO ^TEF.MC dont work.

Enter the symbol as TEF.MC (without the ^) which worked for me. The caret (^) is only used for indexes.

This is an excellent app!! Great work GeckoDev! It's running nicely on my Diamond. I've put my portfolio on and some indexes. Great to have the ability to quickly check curent rates.

I've noticed that the time displayed under each ticker is given in US time. I'm in the Netherlands (mainly tracking Dutch stocks) so the time looks odd (it's 6 hrs off). I've looked at the Yahoo Finance page, and it gives the same time. Is it possible to somehow force a certain LOCALE, or time offset in the next update?

Thanks again for your great effort!

/edit

Actually I have been fiddling about with the Yahoo!Finance URL and to 'force' a local time it is possible to prepend the URL with a certain country code. For instance for me it works to put 'de.' in front of the 'finance.yahoo.com/q?s=^AEX' url to get the AEX index in my local time, e.g. 'http://de.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=^AEX' gives me the AEX index in (my) local time.

These are the country codes available from Yahoo!Finance:

Argentina: ar.
Australia & NZ: au.
Brazil: br.
Canada: ca.
China: cn.
France: fr.
Germany: de.
Hong Kong: hk.
India: in.
Italy: it.
Korea: kr.
Mexico: mx.
Singapore: sg.
Spain: es.
Taiwan: tw.
UK & Ireland: uk.

Maybe you can add the option for users to select a certain region, effectively changing the URL you use to lookup the stock quotes.

faethon
3rd November 2008, 03:11 PM
Another list of suggestions (See previous post):

allow new lists to be inserted in the current lists. In the current version a new list will be added as the last list, however, it might be more convenient to be able to insert a list between existing lists. Or, to later be able to rearrange the order of lists.

Allow a single ticker to be edited (now you can only delete a selected ticker, not change it)

Of course only if you have the time. These are NOT REQUESTS, but just suggestions for your leisure to implement or not!! Great work and have fun!

This is because Yahoo gives the indexes real time, but stocks with a certain delay. You can see the delay times here: http://finance.yahoo.com/exchanges

@faethon --

Nice detective work on getting local times! I'll certainly add something along those lines, either as a setting, or by reading the device's regional settings. The "insert list" idea is good too.

I already have plans for editing tickers, but it will be a little more advanced, such as allowing you to add notes, and possibly record your current positions so you can view your own gain/loss, etc. Also the ability to set alarms on symbols, etc.

Thanks for the kudos!

GeckoDev,
Most of the stocks in our exchange here are low values that have 3 decimal places prices and changes. When displaying in yr app with 2 decimal places, the actual changes are not shown. Just to give you a few of those stocks, you may check the following symbols.
B20.SI
A0G.SI
EB5.SI
5DN.SI
F83.SI
As you can see, the actual prices and changes are being "round-up" to 2 decimal places in your app. Really hope your app can display 3 decimal places so that it reflects the real changes and prices.
Thanks.

Hi GeckoDev,

The calculation of the % is not how it should be.
ex
The index is 2173.06
the change is + 72.88
the result you give is + 3.35%

It should be + 3.47%
the result must be calculeted on + 72.88 / (2173.06 - 72.88) or the old index.

Google has real-time for NASDAQ, but all the others are still delayed: http://www.google.com/help/stock_disclaimer.html. I looked into it anyway, and they don't have an anonymous feed. You can get data for a portfolio you've set up on Google, but the user has to be authenticated. It could be an interesting idea for another app though, if someone wants to write it.

For a market data provider to deliver real-time quotes, the receiver must sign a contract (which of course implies paying for the service...).
Yahoo DOES deliver real-time quotes, but ONLY for US securities and ONLY when you've paid for them: 10 USD/month. I know, as I pay for it...
It would be nice to get these real-time quotes into Ticker Tape :)

If you could let me know how you access the real-time data, I might be able to add it as an option in Ticker Tape ... the idea being that the app would use your subscription (configured in settings) to get the data for your personal use.

Hi

I really love this app, i've been looking for an app like this for as long as i could remember hehehe... i would happyly paid for this...

if i may i would like to give the following suggestions...

1. i'm using omnia with 400x240 screen, and there is this big wasted space between the end of 6 tickers list and the blue chart background, could we do something about this here? like for instance, ability to add more tickers to a list or resize the chart?

2. the chart is too small too read, could we do some sort of zooming, the series number are hard to read off the chart.

3. if we could somehow search the ticker symbol directly with the app, w/o manually using another pc to access yahoo.com.

Thanks dude

There are two softkeys and one icon for input changer below the keyboard. The keyboard does popup ok in this program, but it will also popup in the same manner (without the below buttons) in other programs (after running tickertape). With this bug, there is no way to change input method.

Since other people didn't report this problem, I am not sure if it is related to tickertape since I can't repeat it either (after rebooting.)

OK, that makes sense. So Windows retains the SIP placement in TickerTape, and it carries over to other apps. That should be an easy fix, I'll have a look and probably post another AppToDate update sometime tonight.

I'm sure it probably is related to TickerTape, because I'm doing some magic with the keyboard there. I borrowed the code from another app I wrote, but in this case there's no need for the magic, so I'll just let the SIP behave how it wants to.

I thought of that at one point, but forgot about it until you brought it up. The reason it only gets data for the current list is to limit the amount of data (in case you pay for it), and you could have lots of lists to download. But I should make it an option to do that if you want to. Thanks!

I think you should care more about speed than data amount since there are VERY FEW people now days who has to pay by bytes. Most people either has no data plan at all, or has unlimited data plan. In USA, I don't really know which carrier is still selling a plan with data limit.

Juz few suggestions to make this even more appealing and powerful...
(1) Possibility of a "Download Now" button (as Left softkey) for each page. The current "Download Now" inside the Menu tab, can be changed and used as "Download All".

I haven't played with gestures yet, but I've bookmarked the threads about sensor API's so I could figure it out. Adding gestures would be totally cool, but it might take while before we start to see it in this app.

Personally I don't like gesture at all. Let's deal with the program first before we add those eye candies. There are still long way to go before this program become mature. For example, enabling offline browsing and add the "exit" button. The new left softkey which is showing status now is a big waste. The status can be moved to the top, and share the line with list name.

While the keyboard bug is fixed (I appreciate it very much), the pop up keyboard is not as elegant as before.

Good job.

Too lazy to read all the posts, so not sure if this has been brought up. With all the volitility lately, I've been enjoying the 1d and 5d views the best. One neat way to customize this app would be if there was a way to input a Cost Basis within a ticker. It could either be reflected within the row of the ticker itself, or reflected as a green line in the chart once entered (and overlay with the red line for the previous close). I have my cost basis almost memorized, but would be cool graphically since several of my holdings have different cost basis', and therefore, I use an average.

Hi GeckoDev, just updated to 0.4. This continues to be a great app, and it just gets better and better!

I've noticed that the TickerTape.dat file is binary. It stores the Tickers & Lists. One thing that might make the creation of the lists more convenient (especially when using a lot of lists) is to change from a binary file to a text file that also allows offline editing. For instance using a file format like:

[MyList]
^DJI
^AEX
FORA.AS

[MyList2]
MS
HTC
BAM.AS
^NDA

[MyList3]
ETC
which is a definition of 3 lists, with some (bogus) tickers in them. This way it makes creation of a lot of lists more convenient on the desktop, after which it can be copied to the device.

Nice tip. BTW, it is plain text, not binary.

This is a neat little great app.

Would it be possible to add the ability to remove the company name from a row...just the ability to show a symbol or the company name. With both the symbol and the company name, the row looks a little cluttered.

Also, since typically when updated, all tickers in a list are updated at the same time, maybe a last updated date / time at the list level and not for each row. That would make the row more eye friendly.

GeckoDev
5th November 2008, 11:14 PM
The file is actually more complicated than that, but maybe there could be an import feature that merges a text file like that with the data file. Also an export feature that creates a text file you can edit, or keep as a backup of your lists. What do you think?

GeckoDev

That's actually the TRADE time that the quote represents, not the time it was updated. So each ticker will (potentially) have a different time from the others.

I'll think about the other suggestion ;)

have you think to create a similar application for exchange rates?

You can track currency exchanges in Ticker Tape using their ticker symbol. See here (http://finance.yahoo.com/currency) to find out what the symbols are. For example, you can use EURUSD=X for Euros to USD.

It probably IS because of funny president. :)

I've looked, but I wasn't able to find the Polish indices, and I don't know why that exchange isn't provided.

The links you gave are broken, can you repost them?

Also, I can't read whatever language those sites are in. If you can find some sort of data feed from them, I can probably do something about it. Links to pages that show quotes do me no good, because I'm not screen-scraping to get the data. I need something that provides their data.

Hey everyone,

An XDA member wrote a short article about TickerTape on an Italian HTC/PocketPC blog! I thought the international fame and fortune was interesting. :)
Here's the link (http://www.hdblog.it/mobile/htc/?p=1248), and here it is translated (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hdblog.it%2Fmobile%2F htc%2F%3Fp%3D1248&sl=it&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8) (poorly by Google) into English.

That got me curious, so I did a quick search and found out a couple things:

(1) I'll probably need to change the name of the app at some point, because someone else already has a "TickerTape" app. The other one is for NEWS feeds though (not quotes), but anyway...

(2) It seems there are people that build sites offering the software posted here on XDA. Does anyone know what's up with this? I realize that anyone could get it from here, but whoever runs that site is generating ad income by exploiting the XDA forums, and THAT is disturbing. What a crock.

In other news, the Settings and a few other additions are underway, and I'll probably have an update this weekend. Today was a bad market day, so I hope nobody got pissed off at TickerTape and threw their Diamond in a river. :)

I have plans to integrate with Yahoo's real-time service, which is reported to cost about $10 per month. The idea is that you will be able to configure your Yahoo account information in TickerTape, and it will use that info to get the real-time quotes you have subscribed to. I'm not sure when this feature will be added.

Hi GeckoDev,
I just tried for fun, & certainly will donate for the next version. your app looks interresting.
Here is my feedback on my i780. The Menu is too big on the i780 screen, an horizontal scrollbar is displayed . I suppose that the vertical scrollbar is normal as I suppose that you want your app to be used also with device not having "finger ready" features. but it should be interesting in settings to be able to hide the vertical one if you add a finger ready feature. Anyway, the vertical scroll bar is displayed in the "compare to" sub menu even if all items are visible & does not need a scrollbar

for the horizontal one, there is no need on i780...

About the number of quotes being able to be displayed, only 2 quotes can be displayed without being truncated... the third quote is truncated & other are hiden under the graph.

Maybe an horizontal sizing bar or a setting containing the number of quote to display and/or the size of the graph could be useful !

but anyway, I like your pre alpha beta version !

Just want to thank for this great software. Everything works great.

One thing would be outstanding: Using the HTC Diamond Scroll/Zoom wheel functionality for the chart (or double tab to chart makes it landscape fullscreen).
And using wipe left/right to switch between the tabs.

Nice little apps.

Acutally I really like the current 0.4 version and the fact is that it is small. Don't really need any other improvement except maybe the way it connects. I would prefer the data connection to stay on while the prog is running rather than starting/closing at every periodic update (or at least have the possibility to choose).

The downloaded chart is 512 pixels high (when rotated). I didn't want to resize it to fill the whole screen, because then the chart would become distorted and hard to read.

On devices with lower resolutions, the chart will still get shrunk some to fit the screen, so in those cases it ends up filling the whole screen, but there will be some distortion due to resizing.

But on the Diamond and other VGA devices, even though it doesn't quite fill the screen, we get to see the chart actual size with no distortion. Make sense?

You've designed an outstanding, professional-looking app, GeckoDev. And I can see you've spent just as much time designing the look and interface of the app as you have it's efficiency and accuracy. Excellent job.

I agree with you - it makes perfect sense to have a smaller undistorted chart than a larger distorted chart.

By the way... I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet, but you can also enter mutual fund codes and your app will track those just like a stock. For example, if you want to view the Fidelity Balanced Fund, you can do a search on Yahoo Finance to get the fund code (FBALX), and you're good to go. Note: this only seems to work for American mutual funds.

Love the app! It works great on my Touch Pro. The design is the sweetest yet on this kind of app. Thumbs up!

I have got a little request.

I live in Norway, and I am wondering if you could get data from one of these sites:

www.netfonds.no or www.nordnet.no

Not that I am a programmer, but I think you would be able to get data from these sites. My best bet would be on Netfonds.

Contact me if you need translation or help. Would be glad to help you out.

The Oslo Exchange is on the list of exchanges (http://finance.yahoo.com/exchanges) that the data comes from, so you should already be able to get what you want. ;)

Try putting ".OL" at the end of the ticker symbol you want, or look up the symbol here (http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup/all). Let me know how it goes!

Great application -thanks a lot. Re the landscape chart, I understand your point about not wanting to distort the chart by going from 512 pixels to 640 but I still struggle to read the chart - getting old I guess. Would it be possible to either implement zoom and scroll or send the chart to the built in picture viewer to allow that to zoom/scroll?

Also, I guess this would depend on the data source but e.g. for the currency conversions in particular it would be useful to enter a past date and get the quotes as at that point.

@lit2fly: Would the last update time really be useful, since it already shows the trade time that the quote represents? Alerts and trading hours are already on the list (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2846676&postcount=2). ;)

@69alfa: I can get that info ... the question is where to display it! Maybe the chart area could double as an area to show extended info with some sort of toggle? Hmmm. Let me ponder that for a bit.

@wd-40: It already does that! Have a look at the settings for cached charts. You can specify which chart ranges to view cached, and you can specify how old a chart needs to be before it is considered "stale" (in which case a new chart is downloaded). Note: if you kept your data file from a previous version of the app, you need to specify when to get a new chart, otherwise it will always considered to be stale.

To answer your question, I use TickerTape to track my portfolio ... of course, I have the version that lets me track the positions I hold. Just kidding. :) Soon though....

@curious george: That's an interesting idea for an app. I'll give it some thought after hibernating for the winter (it's almost below 70 here in Florida ... BRRRR!) Maybe in time for the Final Four. ;)

To everyone talking about the fullscreen chart: Just for background info, the idea was to not distort the chart by stretching it (there's a more detailed explanation a few pages back). But since a lot of you are talking about it, I could add some stuff to the full screen view to allow you some control over the zoom level and so on. Does that sound good?

I'm not really sure how hard it is yet, I've never tried it. I have it on the list to think about, but I think there will be issues with screen real estate. I have already thought about making the app completely full screen just to claim the extra space where the taskbar is (even though I think only games should do this ... normal apps should play nice with the OS). If it plugs into TF3D, it would have even less space to work with. So I think this whole idea will stay at the bottom of the list forever. :)

You're right, it does look better, thanks! BTW, the line was only supposed to be 1px to begin with, but I found out the background fill was missing the last pixel at the bottom. That combined with the 1px top border made it look like 2px between them. Anyway, it's all taken care of now, thanks.

Hi!
I was just about to buy Stockmanager or Pocket Stock Monitor when I found this application. This one is a lot cooler  even if it doesn't have al the functions of the other two programs. Your planed future features seem to cover everything I need so I wait and see instead of buying one of the others.

The 1d & 5d Charts works for Down Jones Index and the other Indexes and tickers included as "default" but Swedish Index "OMX" and Swedish tickers like VOLVB.ST do not work. 3m 6m 1y 2y 5y works fine. Strange!
I do get a tiny error message over the chart but it is impossible to read it on my Touch Cruise (qVGA display).

I guess everyone here has tried the free "EquityExpert" program? You can scroll trough your tickers "iPhone"-style but the program really run short on functions and it doesn’t look so good on a qVGA display.

I do hope you continue to develop this program!

Very good idea. Some ticker charts don`t work from finance.yahoo.com, but from es.finance.yahoo.com, for instance.

Very good work!!!

That should probably be a tweak on your Diamond, and I'd be honored to hear you've done it. ;)
I've seen threads on it before. A quick search found this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2773038&postcount=15) among others, which might or might not work, I didn't try.

And cellneuron has been screaming for that exit button since the beginning of this thread, so I'd better get that done. :D

Thanks for the link but my touch pro from sprint does not have that xml file :) I edited the system file 27c65cbd_manila in the windows folder. I will upload directions once I figure out how to make the file open.

Attached are the two screen shots one with the link there the other with the erroe msg saying tickertape.exe is not signed with a trusted certificate. anyone have any idea how to get around this error? Did I cause this error when I edited the exe to change the icon file?

If you edited the exe, then the trust you established when you installed the cab is no longer valid, because it is intended to protect you from tampering (even if you tamper with it yourself). :D

I thought that too but I un-installed Tickertape then reinstalled the un-tampered exe...no luck. I moved the all files from "\Program Files\Ticker Tape" to "\Windows\" and still no luck and still get the same error. I have been searching but can't find an answer...don't worry I will figure it out. Maybe I have to cook it into the ROM.

Maybe the stuff on that tab needs to REALLY be signed for it to work, although I'm not sure why it would be different from the Programs tab. I haven't gone through the hassle/expense of getting a VeriSign certificate yet, so I can't sign the exe for real. I could sign it with the fake cert that MS provides for development, but in theory it still wouldn't be valid on a real device.

BTW, thanks! ;)

The symbols for Brent Crude futures can be found here (http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup/all?s=crude) ... there are about 600 of them, so it depends on which one you want.

The FAQ in the 2nd post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2846676&postcount=2) explains where to find symbols for currencies (http://finance.yahoo.com/currency) and other stuff.

Happy trading! ;)

Both INGA.AS and FORA.AS work fine for me. Make sure you're not putting the caret (^) in front of the symbols.

So ... does anyone want an update today, even if it's a small one? Here's what I have so far:

Added swipe (gesture) to change lists
Added EXIT BUTTON (<-- look at that, cellneuron! :D)
Tweaked menu item borders to look better
Changed application icon

I'm working on the ability to rearrange lists/tickers, but not sure if I'll have it done this weekend.

I'm also toying around with a GUI redesign that uses less screen real estate, which is a first step towards making it work as a tab in TF3D. I'll post some screenshots to get some feedback when I'm happy with it.

I have also been working on a way to adjust the quote time to your local zone, but that's actually harder than it might seem. :)

Anyway, I just wanted to know if the updates I have so far are worth it, or if I should wait until there's a little more substance to it. ;)

I've donated some small amount to you for your effort.
I am using 0.51 now and the finger swap is a very nice addition.
just some suggestion;

if you can add a menu function that can display the summery of a selected company in a single page that
includes some important info such as
-The Earning summery, ( http://au.finance.yahoo.com/q/ais?s=RIO.AX)
-A few of the latest headlines links (http://au.finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=RIO.AX)
- Company profile Summery such as http://au.finance.yahoo.com/q/apr?s=RIO.AX

If it has all that, I think it will be as good as the Iphone's Bloomberg app and I can use this app to counter my colleagues' claim that iphone is a better phone.
I don't know whether it can be done or not so its just a suggestion.
Will donate more when i have some spare cash and as the application progresses.. You have done a very good job, so keep up the good work buddy!. cheers

Is there a way to turn off the chart? Or at least be able to scroll through the stocks? The way it is now, only the top two stocks of a list are visible no matter what I do.

OK, what am I missing? I've installed 0.5.1 on my Fuze, and while the charts download nicely for any of the default entries or the ones I add (I'm in Canada, so it's a mix of Cdn and US stocks), I don't get any of the ticker/value info in the "name bars" themselves. In other words, all I see is, for example, ^DJI on the left, a 0 in the middle, and nothing else.

I'm sure it's something I am stupidly overlooking, but can't figure it out for the life of me. Any ideas?

Hi

Thanks for the great product. I can see a huge potential for this.

Here is something I like to comments:

Bug:
1) the schedule download feature doesn’t seem to work for me (if I select 5 second for download rate)

feature:

1) Please create a menu at the bottom of the application with the for example these options ( News, Chart, Tool)

2) Please hide the chart. Only show the chart when the chart button is pressed

3) please allow more than 6 stocks in one list. ( can you make it work more like apple’s stock app. )

4) Kinetic scroll is good if there is more than 6 stocks in one list.

5) Yahoo has the real time stock quote, is that possible to implement? Because a 20 minutes lag isn’t that useful for a real time stock trader who needs the quote at real time.

Improvement:
1) number one request: please hide the message when the software is downloading data or generating map. Because psychologically, it makes the software seem very slow. I would just hide it.

2) Truburt’s icontact UI is very speedy, no lag. If tikertape can run as fast as that, it would be perfect. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402724

3) speed issue when: download, generate chart. Is there any way to improve the speed?

Thanks for this app...it's really polished and works great.

I'm wondering if you've considered adding a "News" feature. Yahoo has company news feeds available via RSS, described here:

http://developer.yahoo.com/finance/company.html

I imagine it would be fairly straightforward to transform these feeds into html for display in a WebBrowser (or equivalent) control. Clicking on links could use System.Process.Start to just launch the browser...

Really appreciate your time and effort on this!

The original installer creates registry entries for AppToDate, because I didn't want to create folders/clutter for those who don't use it. 1) Today screen plugin would be very helpful, just a narrow 10-20px area for 2-4 most important tickers I need to watch.
(maybe possibility of integration with Spb programs...)
2) Font size decrease/increase option. I would prefer smaller fonts, 6 lines in 1 list is not enough (for me).
3) Graphs are nice but take too much space in "List" area
4) Graphs are unable to change their scale (maximum/minimum value) quickly. Spot price is not visible then (above maximum/below minimum).

Otherwise no complaints :)
I am ready to pay 20-30 USD, if you manage to add today screen plugin.
Thanks!

@everyone posting suggestions -- I'm not ignoring you, I just haven't had time to post individual replies.
Your comments have been noted. :D
I appreciate all the feedback, keep it coming.
But PLEASE read the 2nd post ... there are a lot of requests that are already on the "planned" list.
