[30-12-08] iWeather v0.3 QVGA / VGA

Hi,

this is the first release of my first own app for a pocketpc. It's completely written in VC# and should work on all devices up from WM5 with QVGA and VGA screen. I'm a totaly noob in writing or coding apps, but maybe you like it.

The app uses the weather feed from yahoo (or weather.com). When you run iWeather, you need to connect to the internet. Same for the Settings.exe.

How to:
======
1. Run iWeather
2. press "i"-button on the lower right corner to open Settings
3. enter your LocationID
4. wait until the city name appears (IMPORTANT!)
5. press Done-Button
IMPORTANT! It is nessessary to be online at the first use!

- search in Settings.exe only writes the LocationID (e.g. USNY0996) and the displayed unit into the city.xml (you can find your LocationID at http://weather.yahoo.com )
- Settings.exe gives as validation the city-name to the entered LocationID.
- it's not possible to start settings from iWeather
- iWeather will automaticaly start, after pushing "done"-button in Settings.
- background-image and icons will change after sunset or sunrise of the selected location
- both apps can be closed by pushing the battery on the upper right corner

enter your data while connected to the net, than press the "enter" tab on your keyboard to get validated--voila:)

I got the same error message. What I did was I typed in the weather code and hit return on the keyboard. It found the city and works perfect. And I mean, PERFECT! I can't believe this is a 0.1. Outside of more cities, I don't think you can improve much on this. Thank you, thank you.

okay thank you for this application, i know its first version but just some thoughts and feedback from me:
1. settings is confusing (dont`know what button to press and to press return after writing in the citycode), but after trying different times it works.
2. while testing, i realised its a online weather app, but here is the Problem, although i have a 3G net and phone, my phone must build up a internet connection first and then download the data. So i tested it an it needs 9 till 16 (!) seconds to see the forecast. With active sync 10 Seconds. So this is the major Problem because this lasts too long. I think timebased downloading in background would be better in this case.
3. Batterysymbol for closing is too small for my fat fingers, maybe you can enlarge the sensitive area around the battery.

Really good job, especially with an initial release. Any chance of seeing a detailed forcast when clicking on a day. This is more important for me than multiple cities. Awesome job even if it's not possible.

Hi - Polaris WM6.1 latest official rom.

Got the attached error though I thought I had the latest version .NET.
Also think there is a conflict between device settings and iWeather settings as cannot open device settings any more even after deleting iWeather and soft reset.

After I installed it i could no longer go to Start/Settings it would not open only works if i go into landscape mode I thought i missed something up so i re flashed my phone and it happened again after i installed IWeather so i got to settings from landscape mode and uninstalled iweather now phone working again

I just tried Landscape but didn't work and can't get back to portrait mode as can't get to settings(using throttlelauncher so Landscape goes to Raphael screen).

Some suggestions : I have no idea how hard they would be to implement

Animated Weather Icons - there are some already on this board for use with the today Mars weather plugin

When sunrise and sunset are

Satellite weather images - or a blank place to put an HTTP web camera address

Sounds - birds singing - wind blowing - rain falling

Test modes so you can see all the different weather types - so you could show your friends the rain falling with sounds and animations with out having to actually wait for it to rain

The files which are installed by the cab are:

in the iWeather directory
- iWeather.exe
- Settings.exe
- city.xml
- gfx (directory with icons/bigDay ... icons/bigNight ... and icons/small in it)

and there are 2 shortcuts created in Windows/Programs/iWeather.

That's it!

I had thought of that before posting the problem... and the xml file is ok with all contents in place, the problems seems to be in the iweather program, not in the settings program. i also tried other cities that worked for others (manila, new york), and switching between C and F, same result always.

to check if an alarm is enabled or not. I guess, that this key is missing on your tilt.

I don't know, if it would solve your problem, when you add this key manually to the registry.

that was it, what does an alarm flag have to do with your app? i enabled and and disabled the first alarm and that solved the problem. i didn't have to change the anything in the registry manually (just used a registry editor to check the flag was not there prior to enabling the alarm and was there after)

Editing the xlm directly solved the problem for me (i900 Omnia);)

Now working without problems (just the screen resultion should be changed a bit :rolleyes:)

For me the problem was setting.exe that was crashing (even with net connetion)

Great job so far on this. I had some problems getting v0.2 to work on my Sprint Touch. I would get an error everytime I ran the program. I was having problems getting my location set-up. I finaly went into the xml file and manualy entered my location code and Im now up and running.

I have Weather 0.2 running on my HTC Diamond. I reworked it to show right on the VGA screen. The settings page looks fine, but there is some coding in the exe that is still throwing the weather background wallpaper back to 320x240.

Thanks. That fixed it. Nice little app. A few comments. Its quite slow to come up. It takes over the today screen. No way to exit. Its still a little buggy like if you forget to put in a code in the settings and select done, it crashes. Would be nice if it used the built in .net compact framework version instead of requiring version 3.5.

But overall, its neat to see the iphone/touch weather app 'look' come to windows mobile since I've decided to put off getting an iphone for now. I have a touch also and the weather app is probably the most used app.

I could not get this program to run until I read this article: http://tiltmobility.com/2008/09/how-to-install-net-compact-framework-35/

It seems my AT&T Tilt would default to CF2.0, even though I had installed CF3.5. I followed the instructions in the above article and now this program runs. Very nice display!

I was wondering if you were using a feed from Yahoo weather, and if so, which one? The feed that I found only shows a forecast of two days (today and tomorrow)

Doesn't seems to work with NETCFv3.5 on my FSC N560 with WM5 and NETCF 3.5.
It also takes forever to load from SD card. I was online with the first use.

Got it working now. Don't know why. Didn't do much then only a softreset.

I just installed version .03 and ran it while online. Everything worked great. However, contrary to what I read in a previous post, I cannot view iWeather off-line. I must be connected for it to run. I'm using an HTC TyTN II with WM 6.1.

A couple other suggestions:

1. I'd like to be able to run the app and update the data while the wireless is off, but I'm connected via Active Sync to the internet.
2. I'd like to be able to have the app running in the background; right now I have to use a key to get to my menu and close the app.
3. As opposed to other requests, I think other than multiple cities, you ought to keep things simple. So many of the weather apps are just too big. Yours is clean, simple and useful. I don't need animated icons, earthquake data, etc., etc.

I've edited the EXE of iWeather. You have to download the iWeatherVGA.zip in the first posting, and exchange the iWeather.exe with the one in the ZIP file. It's only for testing. Please post your screenshots, bug etc. After the coding-thing is finished i will rebuild the graphics for the larger resolution and build a VGA CAB file.

Me too, same problem. It ran fine the first time. I did not input any location information because I did not know what to enter, plus the options page does not appear to be VGA so I wasnt sure what to enter where.

to wait 'til the city name appears is nessessary, 'cause settings check, if the code exists. normaly there is no need of pushing ENTER, it should validate by itself after entering the 8 characters/digits. you can see it at the top: before you entered anything, there's a message: "Type the LocationID:".
after pushing the last digit of the code, the message changed to: "Validating".
when your city name appears the message changed back and you can hit the done button.

Is there anyway you can add the option to allow the program to minimize. I think and could be wrong but you can only close the program using the little battery icon in the top right corner. Ideally I would like to have my taskbar visible so i can close or minimize as I choose. My goal is to leave the program running so I can access it on demand. Right now its takes time to load new each time

one big issue: the icon of the programme is supposed to be active (i.e. it should show the current weather / temperature). however on diamong the icon is pixellated and blur. if some one can address this problem.:rolleyes:

First you have to go to weather.yahoo.com and enter your city in the search box. In the adress-line of your browser appears the code in that way:

BEXX0022 ist the city-code of Bruges in Belgium. To enter the code in iWeather, you only have to follow the steps of the "How To" in the first posting.

1) install n run apps
2) Click i-button n enter location
3) press ENTER on keyboard/phone keypad
4) Wait until the location validated
5) press Done
6) Finish. Enjoy ur iWeather

For some reason, once I've opened iWeather, when I close it (via the OK hardware button, as I don't see a close box or button within the program itself), when I go to the today screen (which uses UltimateLaunch), iWeather displays instead. You're right, iWeather (for now) only fit portrait mode of QVGA abnd VGA.

To close the programm, just tap / click on the battery icon in the upper right corner.

But if I try to set my place I have an error... In the settings, the city is recognized : szxx0017 - lausanne

if i go in the rss of yahoo, i've the n/a picture.

I've seen that if I put a city (for example Geneva szxx0013) it's ok. and in the yahoo's rss it's ok too (not the n/a picture).

is it possible to handel the error and to have the n/a picture (existing in the gfx menu), instead of this error ?
