I tried searching this forum and Google, but couldn't find out why my SU Requests hangs. It only happens after I used my phone for a while. It does work after a fresh wipe and flash.

I root my phone a long time ago, did I do it wrong or something? The same thing happens on JF, TheDudes, Hayakuro, and CyanogenMod roms.

currently using CyanogenMod 3.4 with 1.2 recovery with latest spl and radio

try reflashing radio, spl, then any rom again. this happened to me before. can't explain why but that procedure fixed it for me.

i have the ota cupcake version. and it seems impossible to root this. ive tried rc29 and rc7, it just gives me "not allowe" and back to the rainbow screen.

now there is this topic to be found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=518251
but that is only for people who have lost their root due to the ota update.

I think i soft bricked my phone after applying the SPL update.
I can still boot in recovery mode or with power+cam button;

info;

DREA110 PVT 32B
HSPL10.95.3000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.261

I downgraded to RC7 and already applied the radio update.
It keeps hanging on the G1 bootloader atm.

how to fix?

This happened to me often and sometimes happens from time to time.

You're gonna need the Android SDK for this.
All you need to do is set up the sdk and blah blah blah.
Now you need to make sure the Android Developer Bridge recognizes your device. It should recognize it while in recovery or the G1 screen. Just play around with it.
adb devices

(I don't want to get into too much detail with adb, theres a whole thread on that.)

Now all you have to do is rename whatever ROM you intend to use to update.zip and know its directory.
After you know all that mumbo jumbo, push it to your sdcard with this command:
(Again, you should know how to run adb by now)
adb push '/your-directory/update.zip' '/sdcard/'

Reboot your phone into recovery and wipe, then update.zip.

please tell me why the f&#k I can not type 'telnetd' as described in the standard thread explaining how to get root on RC29.

After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter.

I've tried reading but nobody has the same problem as me.

I can successfully gain root access (I assume) because the Telnet works fine and I get a '#' response after everything I type in.

The problem is, that when I reboot the phone with END and HOME key - I don't get the exclamation mark (recovery mode) to install Hard SPL- I get the three colours on the screen.

I've tried repeating the Telnet stuff again and rebooting, and the Telnet stuff seems to be working fine, but I can't get into recovery mode for the life of me!

I've got the recovery.img and update.zip on my SD card. What should I do?!

Edit: I'm running kila_uk-user 1.0 TC5-RC7; not the US version. I've had to do the Goldcard method because I'm using an AU Dream. Now can I simply install the RC29 without doing the Goldcard method again?

I am experienced !!! so yes:
- twice telnetd
- unplug USB

But I think that two # instead of one and the fact I can not adb root or adb remount (permission denied) also shows root access failed.

Please give me more/other/better/bulletproof advise!

From what you typed, your not rooted yet
you need to complete step 8
8. Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
* mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* cd sdcard
* flash_image recovery recovery.img
* cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img

Now you have root!

- there are two # in telnet (so ## as a cursor), I think after one has typed telnetd with succes only one # should appear

I am telling you, strange things are happening. I think that OTA 1.5CRB43 has closed the ROOT option in RC29, I have heard this more than once now.

Step 8 gets typed in telnet. Don't worry about the double # its good that you got it
No where does it say type them into terminal or start terminal and type them.
Restart over from rebooting your phone and typing in the telnet command and preceed to type the commands after you get #

6.Press alt-W to wipe your device. (You need to do this, or the device may hang at the flashing Android screen)

As long as you already applied the recovery and hard spl then you can delete them. And Yes you just rename that to update.zip. Just Alt+w then Alt+s and your done.

I know I said double # and you said it's OK, all I am saying is that I think you are mistaken! And 'download an app that requires root to see if it is rooted' seems to be farfetched as there should be easy adb commands or telnet commands to check?

'Have you already updated your spl after applying the recovery.img'? Yes I tried, but it does not work which I think is also proove that the phone is not rooted.

Untill you or someone else comes up with a solution we now have sufficient proove from several members on XDA that the OTA1.5 CRB43 has disabled the option to downgrade and regain ROOT.

I would like to have this post examined by moderators/specialists so that it can become known by everyone (because it takes to much of everyone's time).

So it seam I do have ROOT since I succesfully updated with one of the latest ROMS. Here are the (communication) problems I think cause confusion:

- there is not an easy command to see if you have gained ROOT after the RC29 and telnetd procedure
- when updating with new firmware the ALT w will boot the system so you have to reboot again in order to be able to press the ALF s for update. This is not the case with the bootloader I now have (so it differs).
- THE BIGGEST TROBLE I HAD: adb commands for pushing the update.zip (ROM) to my SD card gives me an error (can not do this because it is read only) which was very confusing since that felt like I did not have ROOT. By copying the update.zip (ROM) to your SD card the same (as ADB push command) is accomplished.

I also wish to thank the root.apk application mentioned a few threads before (129 I think) because that worked like a charm.

Thank you all for your help and good luck for now.

Regards.

it is completely clear that the answer is already given .. "read-only" means that there must have been an error message when you typed:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
and you are failing to mention this .. if that command line was successful then your system would not be "read-only"

Hi,

I just bought a G1 which I'm attempting to root. However, the catch is I can't determine where the thing is from. It's already running cupcake. The phone's baseband is listed as 62.50S.20.17U_2.22.19.261, kernel is 2.6.27-00393-g6607056 and build is CRB43. As far as I can tell, it has not been rooted yet. I can't 'su' or browse the private directories.

I've read the guide, but I'm stuck at step 1 - do I use the RC29 or RC7 to downgrade? Does it matter?

Anyway to tell for sure? If it helps, I've also learned that UK phones do not come with the IM software (just GTalk) and the hard buttons are all white. Both of these describe my phone.

Do all US phones come with the IM software and have colored hang-up/call buttons?

otherwise add the reference before the file .. ie:

Hi there, I'm new here.. just a quick question.. I'm currently running my G1 US on 1.5 cupcake and my build is CRB43, I've never rooted my phone before..
so by the time that I got the phone I flash it to cupcake...

My question is.. can I perform the instruction on the 1st page to root my phone..? or is there other instruction for the never rooted cupcake device..?

I see my question is very common nowadays.. but I can't seem to get some definitive answer for it.. so could you help me answer this..?? thx b 4.. :)

are you doing this step first?

cd sdcard

otherwise add the reference before the file .. ie:

flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

one wrong spelling mistake can make a world of difference .. so make sure you've correctly typed in everything

thank you soooo much =D that did the trick.

just follow the normal root instructions .. flash the RC29 image and it wipes everything .. starts from scratch basically .. then after that it's the same as everything else .. no matter from where you start if you can flash the RC29 or RC7 image you can root the phone

certain ROMs require special radios and/or SPLs. Make sure you research this before doing the update, otherwise you may get bricked.

I suppose the DREAIMG.nbh should be present on the ROOT of the sdcard and not in any folder called 'sdcard'(as indicated by /sdcard).

Am I right on this? Probably that is what unpapi would have done.

"some red screen with some info" is not very descriptive .. could you be more precise? to which instructions are you referring? did the nbh file flash successfully? have you tried GREEN+MENU+RED to reboot? if you can reboot the phone it is not "bricked" as you said

I just messed up my rooted G1 about some hours ago installing a the HTC Hero theme onto a what I thought was a ADP JesusFreke, which turned out to be a US version.

So I factory reset the phone using
Home+Power > Alt+W,
and apparently, T-Mobile's got this new thing where it wipes and blocks all APN's thus rendering the G1 service-less.

Luckily for me, I kept DREAIMG.nbh on my sdcard and used
Camera+Power > Power
to update the image back to a stock G1 (RC29).

So going from RC29, I re-rooted my G1 and I've noticed you said to press
Home+Power > Alt+W
before installing the update.zip. There's my problem; after Alt+W, I go on to Alt+S to install the update.zip but again, same problem as before; it loads up to the Android/GoogleAccount start screen, this time with ONE APN, so I had to wait about an hour to sign in with my Gmail account being that I had Edge the whole time.

Once I get onto the home screen, I get into the wireless settings and try to add new APN's, but everytime I save a new APN, it doesn't actually save; it gets deleted.

So the problem is, I'm stuck with one APN;Edge and I can't add more.
I'm gonna attempt to re-root again, this time without Alt+W before Alt+S. Does that ALWAYS get stuck on the flashing ANDROID screen?

Thats weird.... do you have access to Wifi? Use the ADB commands to activate over wifi?

Theres also some custom ROMs that have T-Mobile APN's entered by default, you could try those.

No there is a way to unroot it. Make sure the ROM's you use allow you to keep root (I.e use custom builds that have root, don't use T-mobile official releases)

It won't let me flash down to RC29. I don't have the phone in front of me atm so I can't remember the error but it refuses to accept the dreaimg.nbh file.

I can't find the thread atm but I remember seeing some mention of a 'goldcard' being necessary for some of the newer firmwares to downgrade.

I'm somewhat of a newbie so don't get too impatient. I downgraded to RC29 and established root. Now i am wanting to get to the latest HERO build but i can't even get my phone to install the latest radio or any other updates for that matter. It says failed verification no signatures. I tried like 5 different files from radio's to spl's and none of them seem to work. They all fail. I'm a new forum user so hopefully this is in the right place.

that is most likely the Build Environment download to which you are referring .. that is not the update.zip file .. you would probably want to newer file anyway .. check my stuff:

I'm thinking of trying the Goldcard method used for european Dreams... but I have the DREAIMG.nbh (exact same file that worked on my G1, same exact card actually) in the root of the SD card, when I get into the recovery mode by holding the camera button at boot, it gets in fine with the 3 colors but pops up an error and doesn't let me hit power to flash it. My friend bought a Dream phone somewhere from the eBay ...
the phone is T-Mobile SIM-locked.

I wonder I can use the method here to make it able to work with local SIM.
 please help, as she buy it quite expensive (around 447.24 USD), and found it's locked.

If I were to help her crack it using above methods, do I still need at least a T-Mobile SIM???

[NOTE]
Sorry I think I gave a open-ended question ... here's some more clarification from me.
I fully understand the instructions and I'm comfortable to apply it, .. just that I do not knows what it means by unlock ... does it include a SIM-unlock?

... any clarification will be thankful.

why not make a application that does everything to root and install custom roms on a g1. that would be awesome with no more bricked phones from those of us who are not comfortable trying to root and install new roms. maybe just a application that when installed and applied would root your g1. now that would be worth paying for.

To 2nd a question already posted but not answered: "I went from Cupcake 1.5 to RC29 with the DREAM.nbh file. Then I added the recovery.img and Hard SPL. Did both of those. Now do I need to goto RC33 or can I just skip to the rom I want?" And anyone know where I can find a recent JF install tutorial considering 1.5 is already installed? I haven't looked through each of the 200(!) pages of this thread, so it might be in there, but heavens its hard to find it this way - it needs to be broken into new thread. :( Thanks for any answers!

Yes, you can go directly from RC29 straight to whatever rom you want, Just make sure you wipe before installing the new rom.

I just rooted a friend's phone, did the RC29/cyan 1.31 recovery/hardSPL and then installed JF 1.51 ADP. Worked perfectly.

Flashind my Diamond was way easier :p

Ok, I have the Orange Dream (AZERTY keyboard) that doesn't have the cupcake update and lacks contacts sync and GTalk. So far I've already succesfully rooted the phone and I was wonderning if I have to apply the HardSPL as mentioned in the first post. I'm asking because I remember reading when first the Orange Dream went on sale, there were some problems with people flashing the HardSPL.
Also, can I already flash it with a CyanogenMod Rom or is there something else I have to do ?
The way I understand is:
1) Flash Radio Rom (latest seems to be 2.22.19.26I) >>> 2) applying HardSPL (found at Haykuro's custom ROMS for the G1 Google code page (http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/)) >>> 3) flashing CyanogenMod v3.6.8.1 Rom

(Don't worry, I spent the hole day reading tutorials, wikis and various thread, it's just that it isn't clear if the tutorials apply also to the DREA200 ;))

Edit: Can anyone please explaine what is exactly to "wipe" ?

open Terminal on your G1 .. type "su" .. if that doesn't work then you did not complete the root process

Original instructions has a typo under:

Preparing to Get Root on your Phone

step 2 says to use DREAMIMG.nbh, it should be DREAIMG.nbh (although the file in the zip is correctly named DREAIMG.nbh, people may be inclined to rename it DREAMIMG.nbh)

Please update, it will cause less problems for the rest of us having to answer "it wont work when I try to downgrade to rc29" posts

I've finally figured out how to create a fat32 partition on my sd card using Acronis Disk Director (windows xp is apparently happy to format a FAT16 partition as FAT32, but this doesn't work on the G1 as the partition type is unchanged). Now though I am stuck at the bootloader screen where I am given the option to:
DREAIMG.nbh -

BOOTLOADER -
RECOVERY -
BOOT -
SPLASH1 -
SYSTEM -
USERDATA -
RADIO_V2 -

Press Power button
to start update image

Press action button
to cancel update image

I've pressed the "power" button (call-end button) and nothing happens. I press the "action" (trackball) button and nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

It took me a while but I was finally able to downgrade to R29. I'm not sure what I did different than all the other times. All of a sudden the progress bar actually appeared. I think maybe I left the SD cover off... I only mention it because I know there is a switch that gets flipped when you put the sd cover in place.

I'm still trying to replace the recovery.img file on the phone... I don't have a usb cable or a TMobile SIM card so activating and getting to the point where I can get the telnet app from the market is going to be a pain.

Why should you root your Dream/G1?

You can install a full Linux distribution, like Debian. (http://www.saurik.com/id/10)
You can run applications that require root, like Screenshot (http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/11/android-screenshot-application.html) and Auto Rotate your Browser (http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/12/auto-rotate-for-android-browser.html) and or any other application (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=451139).
You can install the latest Android build directly from the Android source tree (http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/12/building-android-source-and-deploying.html).
Customize your boot image. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=456071)
Create full backups (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459830) of the state of your phone.
Create custom ROMs. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466174)
Install Applications to your SD Card to save space. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462882)
Use your phone as a tether (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443025&highlight=tether) to connect your computer/laptop to the internet.
Turn your phone into a wireless router (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444004) that provides internet access.

Well, hopefully one of those reasons convinced you to get root access on your phone!

Preparing to Get Root on your Phone
Getting root on your phone involves exploiting a security hole that existed in an early version of Android. The versions with the security holes are known as RC19, RC28, and RC29 (or RC7 or lower for UK phones). As of RC30 (RC8 on UK), Google patched the security hole so that your phone can not be rooted (don't worry, we can still root it!).
To check your version, go to the Home Screen, click your menu button, choose "Settings", and then click "About phone". You will then see the following screen:
http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1RootWalkthrough/RC30.png

If you have US-RC30/UK-RC8 or higher, you will first need to downgrade your phone to a previous version. (Skip these steps otherwise)

Format your phone's SD card to FAT32 mode:

Hook your phone up to your computer using a USB cable and then wait for the notification to show up in your title bar of your phone.
Click the notification, and then click "Mount".
A new removable disk should show up on your computer. Right click it and select Format, and select FAT32 as the file system type.

Download and unzip the RC29 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EMY1HIVU)or RC7 (http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1/DREAMIMG-RC7.zip) image file. Copy the DREAMIMG.nbh file to the SD card. (RC29 for US, RC7 is for UK)
Turn the device power off.
Hold Camera button, and press Power button to entry bootloader mode. You should see a gray/white screen with instructions to flash your phone with the update on your SD card. If you don't see that, make sure you followed the instructions properly.
As per the on-screen instructions, press the Power button to start upgrade procedure. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS.
After it is finished, perform the restart your phone.

Rooting your RC29 or lower phone:
On RC29 phones and lower, anything you type into your keyboard is also being run in a hidden console with root permissions. More information regarding that at the bottom of this post. But, to get root access, do the following:

Instructions:

Download recovery.img (http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1RootWalkthrough/recovery.img) and copy it to your SD card (see the previous instructions on how to copy from your computer to your Phone's SD card).
Download the Hard SPL (http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1RootWalkthrough/HardSPL/update.zip) and copy the zip file to the SD card.
All files must be on the root of your SD card.
Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard
flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img

Now you have root!

What To Do Now That You Have Root
Now that you have root, you will want to apply "Hard SPL" to your phone. HardSPL is what will allow you to apply flash images from other regions (like UK on US phones, and vice versa), create full backups of your phone, install the latest build from the Android source, and usually resurrect your phone if it is "bricked". You have already downloaded the file to your SD card, so now you can apply it.

Power off your phone.
Start up in recovery mode by holding home and pressing power.
You will now enter recovery mode. You should see an exclamation.
If you do not see a menu on screen, press Alt-L to show the menu.
Press Alt-S to apply the update from the SD card.
After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.

And now, the last step! You are still running an old version of Android, but you want to upgrade to the latest and greatest update! You can do this, and not lose root by downloading modified versions of the updates.

First, choose a modified image from the list below:

ADP1.1: (md5: bacc58302e0b239d66c7bcc8db6c434b)
http://jf.odiness.com/v1.41/JFv1.41_ADP1.1_BuildEnvironment.tar.gz
http://android-dls.com/forum/index.php?f=24&t=241&rb_v=viewtopic
http://andblogs.net/2009/01/jesusfrekes-14-images-are-out/

http://jf.odiness.com/v1.41/JFv1.41_RC33_BuildEnvironment.tar.gz

http://andblogs.net/2009/02/new-rc33-based-images-from-jesusfreke/

RC8: (md5: de2d0d34adbb4015ee3aa5e4e7ca3c07)
http://jf.odiness.com/v1.41/JFv1.41_RC8_BuildEnvironment.tar.gz
http://android-dls.com/forum/index.php?f=24&t=241&rb_v=viewtopic
http://andblogs.net/2009/01/jesusfrekes-14-images-are-out/

Download the image.
Rename it to update.zip.
Copy it to your phone's SD card.
Turn your phone off.
Start up in recovery mode by holding Home and pressing Power.
Press alt-W to wipe your device. (You need to do this, or the device may hang at the flashing Android screen)
Press alt-S to apply the update.

And that's it! Remember to check the links up top to learn how to use root to do the advanced things I mentioned.

Flashed down to RC29, and trying the steps where you type telnetd... nothing happens - it pops up a box that says "Call not sent, please dial an emergency number!"...

I even went ahead and signed back in once to verify that I indeed, do have RC29, and I do, indeed, have RC29 - it just will NOT accept the telnetd command. Also, the instructions say it will start a contact search. All I see is a dialer where you can input numbers if I hit enter once, and that error message if I hit it twice. Typing telnetd in either location does NOTHING.

EDIT:
DUH... figured it out. There's a "missing step" on the first page. You have to sign in to your google account and get to the phone's home screen before you can follow these instructions!! d'oh! It did not say to do that, so I assumed I had to follow it to the letter. As I've seen other people with this issue, I won't erase my original stupidity... But... if you're stuck on emergency dial trying to root - try signing in! The first post did say wait for the homescreen, but I guess that wasn't clear enough for me!

Did you:
- Format SD to FAT32

- Place DREAIMG.nbh onto SD and power off

The versions with the security holes are known as RC19, RC28, and RC29 (or RC7 or lower for UK phones). As of RC30 (RC8 on UK), Google patched the security hole so that your phone can not be rooted (don't worry, we can still root it!).

After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.

but now it wont reboot it just sits on the android screen and scrolls help!

So you got yourself in a boot loop. Did you remember to wipe before you flashed your new rom? Just boot into recovery, wipe, and install the rom again. This should fix it.

so i was able to downgrade from CRC1 to RC29, and am at the telnet steps, i downloaded "Telnet" from the Market, and am able to get the root prompt #. I type in all the stuff instructed in the first post, but nothing seems to happen.

When I first connect to localhost, it gives me a bunch of the diamond with a question mark in it, and blocks like it can't recognize the characters that are supposed to be there. I type in each thing and press enter, it will pause for a second then give me a ## and I do the next, and so on...is it supposed to notify me of something, that I have root access or anything?

I thought this was it, and I copied the Hard SPL files over, but when I boot in recovery mode it just gives me the Red, Green, Blue, White screen, and nothing happens if I press Alt + L.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

None of the articles I have read work the way they say they are supposed to. My problem comes in where the instructions say, "You should see a gray/white screen with instructions to flash your phone with the update on your SD card. If you don't see that, make sure you followed the instructions properly." That screen flashes by so quick I can't even tell if the instructions come up. The screen then comes up with this rainbow colored pattern and just sits there doing nothing.

Can someone PLEASE advise?

To Flash a new rom u don't have to go to bootloader mode u need to start the phone in recovery mode by pressing HOME+power and then press Alt+s to flash the rom and if u don't screen which says press Alt+s then first press Alt+L and u'll get the screen and then flash and enjoy :)

No instructions tell u to do that through the bootloader u only downgrade ur bootloader by going into the bootloader mode and flashing is done by recovery mode i also did that from the same instructions and got it too and its just simple u just have to relax and read the instructions properly dats all

OK, I got it to work. I admit it was user error - I formatted the SD card to FAT not FAT32. So here is my next snag: Instruction #5 reads:

"After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)"

I hit Enter twice on my keyboard and nothing happens.

I followed these instructions as written, and my phone maintains the DREAIMG.nbh file's ROM.

Like, it's pre-cupcake. I believe that it is rooted, because, when I start the phone using "power + camera button" it show's the android's on skateboards. But when I install a custom ROM, it fully installs, then I "home + back" to reboot, and nothing changed. It stays pre-cupcake. I have no idea why.

here is spec:

I have tried naming the file DREAIMG.nbh , DreaIMG.nbh, DREAIMG.NBH, DreaIMG.NBH. It always says "not allow". I have tried downloading the file from two different sources. Still no joy. Could there be something wrong with my G1? Does anyone have a download location of a confirmed working image file?

and last thing: i was wondering if i downgrade my g1 will it simlock it and i have to buy a new unlock code?

My phones build only has CRC1.

Baseband version = 62.50s.20.17H_2.22.19.261

Question would these instructions apply to this Build CRC1

So I tried rooting my phone the regular way and it worked. I don't believe there is any special way to root CRC1 builds as far as the US builds go bc I just unrooted, flashed orginal SPL, got CRC1 update, and rooted it again using this guide.

1. Get "Terminal Emulator" from market, open app, type "su". What happens?

2. Go to the Home Screen, press Menu button --> "Settings" --> "About phone". Go to the bottom, what version is listed for "Build Number"? (RC#)
1. su: permission denied

2. RC29

everything seemed to go well for me when entering in the commands initially to enable root in telent app. i got all ## responses(the good kind im told) and i then successfully installed hardspl.

this is weird to me cause i bought the developers phone thinking i already had root. can root be taken away? cause my friend took my phone and updated it a while ago to 1.5 official version. i wasn't there when he did it so idk what he did. i know i used to have the engineering spl.

now im having a tough time getting root back. im kind of stumped. ive gone over and over this quite a few times.

there are quite a few ways to format from the phone .. the 64bit OS should not matter .. are you just trying to format a single partition or have more than one partition on the card? the phone will automatically format a single partition for you

Menu -> Settings -> SD card & phone storage -> Unmount SD card -> Format SD card

your computer is most likely unmounting because it cannot format a mounted drive .. simple bit of trivia there

generally speaking .. when it unmounts it is still visible to the computer .. you would then go into the "Manage" section of "My Computer" and to the "Disk Management" area .. windows will not format an active drive .. thus you cannot format the C: drive while the computer is running .. you should be able to find the SDcard listed there

if you format the SDcard with the phone by the means i previously posted it will be formatted FAT32 and compatible with the G1

I went to Disk Management as you suggested, but couldn't find the SD card there. In any case, if for the purposes of rooting the phone the format on the SD is enough, I don't need more.

Now I formated the card by the phone, and copied the unzipped DREAIMG.nbh file to the SD card. When I turn on holding the camera button I get the same thing as "fixpda", which is a colorful screen with some numbers, then a gray/white screen very briefly, which says "No image file!" and back to the colorful screen.

I noticed that the file in the zip file is called DREAIMG.nbh, while the directions in the first post say the file should be named DREAMIMG.nbh. I tried with both names, and neither worked.

it is definitely named DREAIMG.nbh .. if it is not accepting the image .. only two things come to mind .. try downloading it again as the file could be corrupt .. otherwise the phone itself may have a different board or something preventing it from accepting the image .. you are using the RC29 image or RC7?

these are the instructions for the recovery image (seen here with testkeys) to be typed within Terminal after you have root:

15. Type cat /sdcard/recovery_testkeys.img > /system/recovery.img[enter]

16. Type flash_image recovery /system/recovery.img[enter]

the recovery image will be seen when you boot holding HOME+POWER .. this is where you can flash new ROM and such .. i'm not sure if that helps but i did not understand when you said "insert another recovery.img" .. you've found how many different images? i know of three personally .. Third screenshot, under G1 Original SPL, that is what you get, when you hold home+power at boot?
Your camera or back key isn't stuck? ;)

Yes, that is what I see, no, the camera buttons and back keys are not stuck. I have now got it at least somewhat working. If I use recovery_testkeys, I can load it with that, but if I try any other type of recovery image, it fails completely and reverts to showing the original SPL screen.

Could someone please help me with my problem. I really don't want to be annoying, but i have asked about his twice and noone answered me. So here i go again.

My current firmware is CRC37. I have downloaded RC7(UK), since my phone was bought in Austria. When i enter bootloader(the tri-color screen), it start to load, then is says checking and then it gives me the error NOT ALLOWED. What's the problem? My card is formatted to FAT32, i have followed the steps perfectly and i have tried several times. But the problem still persist.

I would really appreciate your help guys. And again, sorry for annoying you.:(

have you looked into the GoldCard? i've seen some people mentioning certain releases of the phone in specific areas will not ROOT by conventional methods .. you could also try this one click root .. it will flash the recovery image and allow you to load a custom ROM without going backward to RC7 .. no wipe and no losing your data

This is an automatic root process. Load a new recovery image and load a ROM with some simple clicks.
http://android.lucidrem.us/_fd.php?file=files/howto-root/recovery-rav1.2.1g.img
http://android.lucidrem.us/_fd.php?file=files/howto-root/flashrec-20090815.apk

Download these two files to the phone. Install the APK with ASTRO. Flash the custom image by typing it into the text box. Done. Now you will be able to reboot into the recovery screen and flash any ROM. Try it. You'll like it. Works on G1 and myTouch.

In the instructions under "Preparing to Get Root on your Phone" step 6 says "After it is finished, perform the restart your phone."

Perhaps I'm an idiot but I can't figure out how to restart my phone short of pulling out the battery, which I am hesitant to do. After the upgrade listed in step 5 the screen said something like, "press the action key to continue". I wasn't sure which was the action key so I pressed the back button which returned me to a Red/Green/Blue/White colored bar screen (which is now where I am stuck).

I have tried holding the following:
Power
Power + Home
Back + Home
Power + Back

The screen reads:
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.261

To answer my own question on how to restart the phone at the red/blue/green/white screen:

call + menu + power buttons at the same time will reboot.

It would be nice if the instructions said this.

once you get to that screen you can pretty much pull the battery, by that point the rom has already updated and pulling the battery will not brick your phone or anything like that.

On that screen it should say something like HBOOT below all the info you post. Use the track ball and click, then it will give you some options. It confused me also the first time :)

I assume Austrian phones are the same as German phones, and German G1s won't flash the UK DREAIMG.nbh without a goldcard.

Can anyone please help? I asked this a day or two ago, but so far have found no solution.

I am trying to root my new US G1, and so far unsuccessfully.
I formated the card by the phone (Settings>SD cards...>Unmount, then Format) and copied the unzipped DREAIMG.nbh file (the RC29 version) to the SD card (I have downloaded the file a couple of times, and tried, so I am sure it's not the file that's corrupt). When I turn on the phone holding the camera button I get a colorful screen with some numbers, then a gray/white screen very briefly, which says "No image file!" and back to the colorful screen.

The information on the colorful screen is

you need to go back to the first page and re-read the instructions....you need to format your sd card with your computer and make sure you're formatting it as Fat32,you do not format it from within android. looks like it might not be working because you don't have your sd card formatted correctly.

Does this mean i can install a ROM right from there? Cause i can't install Radio and SPL, since the recovery resets itself. And as far as i know, when you istall SPL, you can't go back into Android before installing another rom.

Just one more question. Can i get back into Android CupCake 1.5(original ROM) after changing the Radio? And something else. In the instructions, it says when you flash Radio restart your device, same for SPL. Can i simply(after the flashing is done), remove the baterry and get back into recovery? Cause if i restart and boot into android, recovery 1.4 will be gone and i'll be stuck..

no, u cant, only wipe and flash the new rom, but u have to read instructions for every rom before u want to to that

This is how I installed without any problems:
: rename to update
: place in the root of sd card
: shut off device
: boot into recovery
: wipe
: boot into phone terminal and enter these:
(enter)
# mount -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
(enter)
# rm -rf /system/sd/*
(enter)
# reboot recovery
: now wipe again
: repair ext system
: flash
and wallah..... Hope you all enjoy!

good luck rooted........

check the ROM versions .. typically within the same build (ie. JFv1.4 to JFv1.5) there is no need to wipe or do anything .. if you switch between build (ie. JFv1.5 to Cyan4.0) you may need to go into the recovery screen and use ALT+W to wipe prior to ALT+S to install the update

CRC37 is UK .. it can absolutely be done .. there is an easier way if you are interested:

Download these to the SD:
http://android.lucidrem.us/_fd.php?file=files/howto-root/flashrec-20090815.apk
http://android.lucidrem.us/_fd.php?file=files/howto-root/recovery-rav1.2.1g.img
http://android.lucidrem.us/_fd.php?file=files/enomther/EUR/CRC37/OTA/update.zip

Use ASTRO to install the APK file. Run the program.
Type "/sdcard/recovery-rav1.2.1g.img" into the text box after you backUp and flash the new image.
Boot into the recovery screen and flash the new ROM.

You now have root access and still have CRC37 and you did not have to wipe.
