http://android.lucidrem.us/files/howto-root.txt

REGISTER (NO DATA PLAN w/ WIFI)
ON YOUR G1
1. <enter>setprop persist.service.adb.enable 1<enter>

ON YOUR PC (w/SDK INSTALLED)
1. C:\> adb shell
2. # am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.android.settings/.Settings

this will allow you to activate wifi and get onto the phone to root it

Thanks for the guide! I followed this and got my phone rooted in all it's glory.

Now for the SPL, I'm using HardSPL currently, but I am looking at the DangerSPL with envy (I want to run CM 5, and try out Froyo). I've upgraded my radio to the latest 2.x. Would it be possible to upgrade my SPL, or would it endanger my phone?

Hello Everyone,

Hope all is well. I have a question that I'm hoping someone can please help me out on. I have a G1 on firmware 1.6. I don't think Google is going to push out anymore OTA updates for this phone so I'm deciding to take the plunge. :D

I want to be able to store apps to the SD card and nothing more. So, if I root the phone (by downgrading and following the great steps on this thread), would there be anything else that I need to do like flashing the ROM, partition, etc. I would like to keep the default ROM but just be able to install more apps on the phone really.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just trying to keep myself busy inside the home since we're having 100+ degree dry heat here in Dallas!

i would say you have two actions .. go with something like TheOfficial by enomther or go with CaNNoN202 based off CM5 .. enom makes "stock" ROMs where the only real change is having root access to the phone .. CM5 ROMs are heavily modified but CaNNoN202 makes a really stable variant

check my [HOWTO] for getting root'd as it will lead you to TheOfficial

Thanks LucidREM. Appreciate the response.

Do you know if once a phone is rooted, will we still get notifications from the Market that there are updates to our currently downloaded apps?

absolutely .. there is no difference between stock ROM and root'd ROM other than the receiving of OTA updates to the system .. Market, MMS, etc will all function normally (or normal as the ROM is concerned)

Hello LucidREM,

I've rooted my phone and actually installed the TMO OTA DRC83 - US ROM with the expansion pack and boy is my G1 fast.

Now, how do I confirm that the apps are being downloaded and installed to my SD card versus internal phone memory?

Again, thank you thank you thank you!

Update***

I've downloaded about 20 apps and my internal available space is still around 80 MB so I'm pretty sure I'm rooted! Wahoo!

I've general question is rooting following these steps on g1 32b is possible without unlocking the phone?

What I meant was if I RC29 a locked g1 will it ask me sim unlock code? if I use different carrier? I understand asking this question is part of ROM (OS) is this is bypassed so we can RC29 and login with my carrier APN?

Hi,

My build number is: DRC92

I am stuck at the first step: Preparing to Get Root on your Phone, I have a G1 T-mobile in the Netherlands.

I have tried both the RC29 for both UK and US but no luck.

After going to the grey screen, I see it is 'checking' and then it shows '0028002' and 'not allowed'

What should I do?

Thanks in advance.

Hi LucidREM,

Yes, indeed, I need to use the goldcard. it works now. I have done the step "Preparing to Get Root on your Phone" successfully. However, I am having another problem with the step "Rooting your RC29 or lower phone:" at this step:

4. Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.

5. After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)

But in my phone, before the "Preparing to Get Root on your Phone" step, 3G worked perfectly. but now, after restarting, it shows the procedure of 'the first time using'. I need to tap the screen, sign in or create a new account with gmail. But I have never succeeded in this procedure. It always informs that could not connect to Gmail server... If I switch the SIMcard to another phone, 3G works perfectly. I dont know if this is the problem after doing the "Preparing to Get Root on your Phone" step or the 3G problem. But i have tried it for than 1 day but still keeping the error "could not connect to Gmail server..."

Is there anyway to pass by the 'first use setup' step and directly going to the 'home screen'?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
So, I have a G1 with a used SIM card which I used to activate the phone over the wifi (don't know if this should affect it at all). I just can't get the stupid thing to root. I get through everything just fine. The commands do not give any errors. I even get the update to work in recovery (no errors at all). But, when I boot up my phone and try to use ROM Manager it says that I do not have root!

Any help would be appreciated.

Please help... I can't connect to Google servers at all..

I was following the guide, and everything was working. Rooted and all good. Now I wanted to update to a modified 1.6, that way I can keep the rooted without losing it. I chose this RC33

renamed it to "update", and got into recovery mode. I did alt+w to wipe, and alt+s to update. Everything seemed to work, so I rebooted, and now my gmail account won't connect to Google servers. I even tried making a new account, same problem.

I can't access my phone now!! please help! Can't connect to Google servers...

"There is a problem communicating with the Google servers. This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned by data services. If it continues, please call Customer Care."

In top right corner, it says "E", which stands for that I'm connected to Edge, right?

Okay you know what I give up! anyway to get me back to stock 1.6 please?!?!

How can I tell if the phone IS rooted. I think it is. But I have no idea. Not to mention. I am now looking at new ROMS, and there is just so much information in there I dont understand. I cant even find a FAQ about stuff like that. There are ROMS that are telling me to check the Radio, and to make sure I have a swap file setup and so on... I am totally lost.

Could anyone point me in the right direction? Starting with... HOW do I tell that I am rooted.

Well after some poking around I have found out the following
HSPL 10.95.3000
Radio 1.22.12.29

Does that tell anyone anything?

- Download Terminal
- Type in "su -"
- If it asks for permisison or if it gives you
$: su -
#
then you are rooted.

Also - check the version and firmware of the ROM you are running.
Menu > Settings > About

What EXACTLY is supposed to happen after I've typed each of the commands into the Telnet app?

What reaction is there to let me know that I've successfully gotten root?

I type:
mount -o rw, remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

it replies:
Usage: mount [-r][-w][-o options][-t type] device directory

Everything else I type is greeted with "# #".

What's right and what's wrong? I'm just flailing confusedly, any help at all would be much appreciated. Thanks.

EDIT:

I read a post I'm not allowed to link to, but all I can say is thank you, LucidREM.

If you have rooted your phone properly you need to flash a recovery image either cyanogens or Amons, then once in there you need to flash a custom rom and then reboot. Once you get to the android with the hand click the android then click skip on everything until you get to home screen where you can get into setting and connect via wifi and add your google account through market. Hope this helps.

You need to follow this guide to root:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684101

and this guide to make adb work:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719

and the G1 comes with a Recovery image already built in just follow the first guide to get into it and then you can use adb or you can boot into fastboot which allows you to flash recovery images. but to do this you need to be rooted.

So to me it sounds like you rooted your phone correctly and you flashed a custom recovery image. which recovery did you flash? Also before you flash a spl make sure you flash the new radio or you will brick your phone.

Um yeah thats why you root so you can flash custom roms, On the development page here go to the Rom Bible (that I made) and scroll through the list of all the roms you can flash. place the .zip file on your sd card boot into recovery and flash make sure you follow the instructions in the rom you choose. I have been doing video reviews lately of roms on my yourtube channel go check them out. http://www.youtube.com/user/RoyalKnight6190

Also maybe i will make a video on how to flash a rom.

So, I've flashed my G1 dev phone to RC29, but I can't seem to make the commands work as one supposes they should. I enter telnet, and the following is what I get, with my input in bold.

<string of gibberish> #

Then I start up, my input in bold:

<string of gibberish> #

# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3/system

Usage: mount [-r] [-w] [-o options] [-t type] device directory
# # cd sdcard

# # flash_image recovery recovery.img

# # cat recovery.img >/system/recovery.img

cannot create /system/recovery.img: read-only file system

# #

I get that it's not mounting to read/write, but I don't know how to solve this. When I enter a terminal emulator and try to get root, I see this:

$ su
su: Permission denied

$

Anyone have some insight as to what I'm doing wrong?

Update - I went back and followed the instructions at a site linked from this thread , worked like a charm.

i was to flash DangelSPL & CyanogenMod 5/6
i go step by step, i used this guide:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=DangerSPL_%26_CyanogenMod_5/6

I had the same issue, removed battery and it worked if you followed all steps....see my post in http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/1566-first-root-to-cm5-stuck-on-g1-splash-after-dangerspl/page__st__20__p__34472#entry34472

Any help would be fantastic - my phone isn't dead, just a little behind :)

Followed the instructions in post #1, worked fantastically.

Then installed the Jesusfreke RC8 (i'm in the UK, this looked like the correct one).

My phone is fine, seems quite happy but my phone details are:
Firmware: 1.0

Kernel: 2.6.25-01843-gfea26b0
jesusfreke@androiddev #1

Build:
kila_uk-user 1.0 TC5-RC8 116470

So, the update worked but i'm stuck on 1.0, how do i go about updating this?

I've tried installing SuperFroyo 2.8.2 (from these forums) but i get the message "E: install script not found".

So, any ideas?

Well I have a situation.
I purchased this Tmobile G1 from eBay.com along with it I also purchased the network unlock code, Although my G1 displayed Network restriction are off. But still when I inserted my Vodafone sim and truned it on, It is asking me to log in to my google account and when I fill in the credentials it is showing me that "You don't have a network connection". When I tried to Root it , I didn't succeded there too as 2 of my laptops one having Xp Sp3 and other having Windows 7 ultimate, are not recognizing the phone.
Please help how should I proceed.
Thanks

Edit:
I don't know why but G1 didn't liked edge connectivity of my vodafone, when I used my Dolphine sim, it worked and I was able to sign in to my google account.
Now I am stuck at Telnet step as I am getting a permission denied error.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the walk through it was really helpful.

I am stuck though, Once I input the telnet commands I should be rooted but I go into terminal to see if it is by typing SU and it tells me permission denied.

Im wondering because I did the walk through and then tried to flash to Supereclairv_xxkolohexx_v2.3 and I almost bricked my phone. Is that because I wasnt rooted?

Thanks

I pre-ordered the G1 in '08, and had it rooted with JF the first time I heard about it, don't even remember when. Since then I have wiped/flashed dreaimg.nbh/returned to stock at least twice. Just to say, I've done this right before. But I'm missing something this time.

Most recently, I was using cyanogenmod 4.x, whatever the latest the version the app would let me install, I forget. I was too chicken to flash hardspl (lame). So, with the G2 release, I figure I should try out Froyo on my G1, see if I like it, because I'm considering going iPhone and want to be sure.

First thing I did was follow this thread's mirror to dl dreaimg.nbh, put it on the root of my freshly-re-formatted FAT32 1Gig SD card, boot into loader (RGBW) and once I hit 88mph, I was right back in Oct. 2008 again, sporting RC29.

I grabbed the RC30-fromRC29 update.zip and - oops...that's not how you root. Flip it, just flashed dreaimg.nbh again, start from scratch. But, this time the version I dl'd was flawed, kept getting a 'fail to update' in red error. Dl'd the orig. from this thread again, zip-thud-back to RC29.

I did the <enter, enter, telnetd enter>, grabbed Telnet from market. "localhost" and "23" were already there. I hit enter. I hit "connect to server". I did the whole she-bang again just to make sure.

su <enter> gives me
su: not found
# #

I can't get back to root. I have flashed and rooted, etc. I currently have:

HBOOT- 0.95.0000 (the original spl)
CPLD- 4
RADIO- 2.22.23.02 (I think I did a radio upgrade at some point, but it was a while ago, I don't recall.)

Only thing I can figure is it has something to do with my radio. Any suggestions folks? I've spent a fair part of two days on this now.

Hi, I've followed all of the steps successfully until the flash_image recovery recovery.img command in Telnet.

It says "error opening recovery.img: No such file or directory".

I've confirmed that recovery.img has been copied to my SD card (currently on my SD card (root) is: DREAIMG.NBH, recovery.img, and update.zip (which is Hard SPL).

Phone information (bought in Germany, I don't speak German though so German links won't help me lol):

Dear all,

I did a disaster with my adp1 phone.
My intention was to update android v1.6 to 2.1 in order to install Skype.
Unlucky I follow the instraction for T mobile instead of adp1, so now I cannot even enter my google account.

What I did was to copy in the sdcard a file named dremimg.rbh file... now when I boot I have the t mobile logo and of course I cannot connect anymore to my account since I do not have a t mobile simcard.

What should i do?

thank you

are we talking about dreaimg.nbh ?
that will reset the phone to android 1.0. you can`t skip the "sign in" step without a data plan (or you can, using adb (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316)). can you reflash trough the right DREAIMG.nbh? if not, you may force it with the goldcard method (it is not my preffered method but ... i don`t know anything else) ?

any can reply for my post ?
Thanks in advanceso you just have the t-mobile logo on the screen. just like the half of the users :)
can you get to the recovery image (reboot= home+back+menu the just hold then home key pressed until you`ll get into the recovery image)? i don`t know what`s on your phone. there are a few recovery images available. the default one, clockwork recovery, cm-recovery1.4, amon-ra and i think JF`s recovery image.
then, you`ll have to reinstall the right rom or radio or whatever you did to get here ( how did get in this situation? ).

for both users, most of us were there. the answers are already on this forum :)

it is enough to put it on the fat partition and you may flash it from there.
that`s what i`ve done.

you have not mentioned in your tutorial that you have to install a new radio before going and bricking your phone by simply installing the "hard spl".
because of ur stupid tutorial i bricked my phone just now.
i know it was not your fault but completely mine.
but i followed this page and tutorial today for the first time and bam...!
i have installed many custom roms in THE PAST and i have rooted and stocked my g1 3 times before this...always through code.google but today i was in a hurry and just clicked on this link after searching on google.
PLEASE IT IS MY SINCERE REQUEST TO EDIT THIS TUTORIAL AND INCLUDE THE STEP OF "PLEASE INSTALL THE LATEST RADIO BEFORE INSTALLING HARD SPL" SO THAT NONE OF OTHER XDA USERS SUFFER THE SAME FATE AS ME BECAUSE OF THIS INCOMPLETE TUTORIAL.

Hard SPL is not the "danger SPL" and should not brick your phone. This tutorial is really old and (I know you already realize this) you should have followed something a little newer. Are you sure you are bricked? What happens if you hold camera and power from a cold boot?

i've tried all possible combinations like CAMERA+POWER & HOME+POWER but to no result.

Why should you root your Dream/G1?
First, choose a modified image from the list below:

ADP1.1: (md5: bacc58302e0b239d66c7bcc8db6c434b)

RC33: (md5: f24b6c237775147cb4bc42efc2393973)

RC8: (md5: de2d0d34adbb4015ee3aa5e4e7ca3c07)

If you have 2 update.zip on the sd card at the same time I would assume you have to delete 1 of them. you should get something like ClockworkMod so you can install any zip file without having to change it to update.zip.
File is to big to upload for you but it's in the threads.

Doesn't matter if your rooted, you can install any "non-rooted" app at any time. The only issue is if the app doesn't install, you probably need a newer operating system version. I've just recently started getting message on my rooted G1 running HTCClay's SuperFast 1.6, "Can't install this application on this phone" which I would think has to do with the OS version and/or the phones hardware.
Lot of times these days, devs aren't designing thier apps for the lower android versions.

What about applications that are designed to check if the phone is rooted or not, is there a way to spoof that or fool the application into detecting the phone is manufacturer OS and not rooted with a customized OS?

Thanks for any input.

Anyone? :(do you have apn configured (menu key->settings on the signin screen)? and what`s the target? what do you want to do ? and why did you downgraded? you know, that that`s not the easiest way to root your phone, anymore. so, you may upgrade it from developer.htc.com signed rom until android 1.6 and then root it using universal androot.
then, flash recovery/radio/spl/custom rom.

I've done a lot of reading here guys, and I'm struggling.

A couple of months back, I rooted and flashed my UK Hero - Androot, recovery from terminal, and flashing a ROM and kernel from recovery. Nice and easy. Now I'm looking to do my wife's G1 and either I'm missing something, or there's not a noob howto, or it's a PITA. Anyone point me in the right direction please?

Actually, should mention, it's a UK T-Mo G1, RC92. I think my main sticking point is do I need to downgrade before Recovery and flash? Androo worked fine on the G1...

Hello!

I have solved this problem with adb. You can enter to your wifi g1 settings and connect the phone to the internet by wifi, and sign in your gmail account.

There are different howtodo, for example this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316), but I have followed another from taringa.

Bye!

First Q: If i am using Amon recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img then should i rename it to recovery.img before moving it to sd-card. Should i be using the newest version of Amon recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0?

Second Q: Do I still use the Hard SPL provided in first post OR Have THINGS PROGRESSED? If so, which Hspl should be used?

Third Q:

And now, the last step! You are still running an old version of Android, but you want to upgrade to the latest and greatest update! You can do this, and not lose root by downloading modified versions of the updates.

First, choose a modified image from the list below:

ADP1.1: (md5: bacc58302e0b239d66c7bcc8db6c434b)
http://jf.odiness.com/v1.41/JFv1.41_ADP1.1_BuildEnvironment.tar.gz
http://android-dls.com/forum/index.php?f=24&t=241&rb_v=viewtopic
http://andblogs.net/2009/01/jesusfrekes-14-images-are-out/

RC33: (md5: f24b6c237775147cb4bc42efc2393973)
http://jf.odiness.com/v1.41/JFv1.41_RC33_BuildEnvironment.tar.gz
http://android-dls.com/forum/index.php?f=24&t=241&rb_v=viewtopic
http://andblogs.net/2009/02/new-rc33-based-images-from-jesusfreke/

RC8: (md5: de2d0d34adbb4015ee3aa5e4e7ca3c07)
http://jf.odiness.com/v1.41/JFv1.41_RC8_BuildEnvironment.tar.gz
http://android-dls.com/forum/index.php?f=24&t=241&rb_v=viewtopic
http://andblogs.net/2009/01/jesusfrekes-14-images-are-out/

Download the image.
Rename it to update.zip.
Copy it to your phone's SD card.
Turn your phone off.
Start up in recovery mode by holding Home and pressing Power.
Press alt-W to wipe your device. (You need to do this, or the device may hang at the flashing Android screen)
Press alt-S to apply the update.

And that's it! Remember to check the links up top to learn how to use root to do the advanced things I mentioned.

First, choose a modified image from the list below: How do i do that? I am guessing RC8 but I see on this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381) thread that JFv1.43 for UK RC9 is also available.
Which one should i use for UK Tmobile G1. Pointing towards the download link would be much appreciated :D

Also: In this last step I am confused  wether I am supposed to use the 'downloads' or 'build enviornments'.

I would also like to say that I want to flash the updated image/rom which does not require the initial registration process as my sim card does not have data enabled.
I was able to bypass this at the initiall step by using adb but this doesn't work builds higher than rc7.

I had root already but it got stuck on the g1 screen . I tried everything I could think of, and then decided to the the dreaming.nbh and now I have it down to the 1.0 version, and after putting the two files on my card and going to telnet, the first two commands do fine, then after the third command it says it cannot find the recovery imager(or it cannot open the recovery image.) this sucks. any suggestions?

Why should you root your Dream/G1?

You can install a full Linux distribution, like Debian. (http://www.saurik.com/id/10)
You can run applications that require root, like Screenshot (http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/11/android-screenshot-application.html) and Auto Rotate your Browser (http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/12/auto-rotate-for-android-browser.html) and or any other application (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=451139).
You can install the latest Android build directly from the Android source tree (http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/12/building-android-source-and-deploying.html).
Customize your boot image. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=456071)
Create full backups (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459830) of the state of your phone.
Create custom ROMs. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466174)
Install Applications to your SD Card to save space. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462882)
Use your phone as a tether (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443025&highlight=tether) to connect your computer/laptop to the internet.
Turn your phone into a wireless router (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444004) that provides internet access.

Well, hopefully one of those reasons convinced you to get root access on your phone!

Preparing to Get Root on your Phone
Getting root on your phone involves exploiting a security hole that existed in an early version of Android. The versions with the security holes are known as RC19, RC28, and RC29 (or RC7 or lower for UK phones). As of RC30 (RC8 on UK), Google patched the security hole so that your phone can not be rooted (don't worry, we can still root it!).
To check your version, go to the Home Screen, click your menu button, choose "Settings", and then click "About phone". You will then see the following screen:
http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1RootWalkthrough/RC30.png

If you have US-RC30/UK-RC8 or higher, you will first need to downgrade your phone to a previous version. (Skip these steps otherwise)

Format your phone's SD card to FAT32 mode:

Hook your phone up to your computer using a USB cable and then wait for the notification to show up in your title bar of your phone.
Click the notification, and then click "Mount".
A new removable disk should show up on your computer. Right click it and select Format, and select FAT32 as the file system type.

Download and unzip the RC29 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EMY1HIVU)or RC7 (http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1/DREAMIMG-RC7.zip) image file. Copy the DREAIMG.nbh file to the SD card. (RC29 for US, RC7 is for UK)
Turn the device power off.
Hold Camera button, and press Power button to entry boot loader mode. You should see a gray/white screen with instructions to flash your phone with the update on your SD card. If you don't see that, make sure you followed the instructions properly.
As per the on-screen instructions, press the Power button to start upgrade procedure. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS.
After it is finished, perform the restart your phone.

Rooting your RC29 or lower phone:
On RC29 phones and lower, anything you type into your keyboard is also being run in a hidden console with root permissions. More information regarding that at the bottom of this post. But, to get root access, do the following:

Instructions:

Download recovery.img (http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1RootWalkthrough/recovery.img) or the new version by Amon recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img (http://www.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img) and copy it to your SD card (see the previous instructions on how to copy from your computer to your Phone's SD card).
Download the Hard SPL (http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1RootWalkthrough/HardSPL/update.zip) and copy the zip file to the SD card.
All files must be on the root of your SD card.
Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard
flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img

Now you have root!

What To Do Now That You Have Root
Now that you have root, you will want to apply "Hard SPL" to your phone. HardSPL is what will allow you to apply flash images from other regions (like UK on US phones, and vice versa), create full backups of your phone, install the latest build from the Android source, and usually resurrect your phone if it is "bricked". You have already downloaded the file to your SD card, so now you can apply it.

Power off your phone.
Start up in recovery mode by holding home and pressing power.
You will now enter recovery mode. You should see an exclamation.
If you do not see a menu on screen, press Alt-L to show the menu.
Press Alt-S to apply the update from the SD card.
After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.

And now, the last step! You are still running an old version of Android, but you want to upgrade to the latest and greatest update! You can do this, and not lose root by downloading modified versions of the updates.

just to root you may want to use SuperOneClick (http://shortfuse.org/?page_id=2) for example. the above cyanogen tutorial is also a very good start ( not only for rooting ).

did you flash the dreaming.nbh? you need to be on firmware 1.0

you can have telnet already downloaded from market

be on the home screen, open keyboard, hit <enter> twice
then type <telned>
then close keyboard
press home button
open telnet
click ok (or whatever it says)
when your in what looks like a terminal
type:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
then you will have a pause and ## pops up
now power off and boot into recovery

if these steps dont work you are adding/skipping something
