View Full Version : w0lf's Translator - Google Translate powered app

Wolf's Translator uses the Google Translate engine to provide translations.
It's a small program I wrote, because I find it useful to be able to translate From/To so many languages at any time and it's much easier to use on the mobile phone than the web-based version of Google Translate.
In order to run the program, .Net Compact Framework 3.5 has to be installed on the device. (you can download it from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e3821449-3c6b-42f1-9fd9-0041345b3385&displaylang=en))
Of course, you also need an active Internet Connection.
Currently, the following languages are supported by Google Translate:
- Arabic
- Bulgarian
- Catalan
- Chinese
- Chinese Simplified
- Chinese Traditional
- Croatian
- Czezh
- Danish
- Dutch
- English
- Finnish
- French
- German
- Greek
- Hebrew
- Hindi
- Indonesian
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Latvian
- Lithuanian
- Norwegian
- Polish
- Portuguese
- Romanian
- Russian
- Serbian
- Slovak
- Slovenian
- Spanish
- Swedish
- Tagalog
- Ukrainian
- Vietnamese
Please note that the translations are not always very accurate, but if you have a text in a different language you don't know, it gives you a good idea about what it means in most of the cases.
A nice feature of Google Translate (also present in the application) is the Language Auto Detect feature: you have a text written in I don't know what language, I tell it to translate to English, for example, and it not only translates it, but also shows the language of the source text (try this by checking the Autodetect FROM Language check box).
A feature that right now is missing, but I'm planning to include in a future version is being allowed to save the favourite language pair, so when you open the program it will automatically select your favourite languages.
This program has been tested so far on HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro (VGA) and HTC P3600(Trinity) (QVGA).

Edited: 08.12.2008:
Version 1.1 available at http://w0lfwmcoder.googlepages.com/translator
What's new in version 1.1:
- Fixed the "Autodetect" label bug
- Fixed character encoding bug (some characters caused the program to throw an exception)
- Moved the "Cancel" menu item over the "Translate" menu item when processing a request
- "Set Default Languages" - saves the current language combination and restores it when application starts
- "Configure Language Set" - if you only want to use 3 or 4 languages yo may select a subset of the languages supported by the application to be shown in the interface
- Copy/Paste feature
- CAB file for easier installation
Edited: 21.04.2009:
Version 1.2 available at http://w0lfwmcoder.googlepages.com
What's new in version 1.2:
- Added the Turkish, Thai, Hungarian, Estonian, Albanian, Maltese, and Galician languages, because they are now supported by Google Translate. (see this link (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/translate-between-41-languages-with.html)). Please note that to access these languages you may have to change your current language set (menu: Options -> Configure Language Set).

I'm sorry; I forgot to write it in the list. Of course it's supported by Google Translator, and it's supported in this program as well.

hey man what a wonderfull simple and fast application. i' very impressed! A musthave on a PPC.
just two small bugs:
-the autodetect doesen't work, i always start with english-romanian
-there is a black line missing above the From box.
and some thoughts:
Can you make it a little more Eyecandy and maybe Fingerfriendly and the default application text translatable? you know, Sex sells !
Again: Fantastic and a very fast online Translation

Hello!
Please make sure your phone succesfully connects to the Internet and then try again. I'll keep testing the application and if I get this behaviour, I'll issue a new version with this thing fixed.
Thank you!

ha just a note.. the Japanese translation there says, "excuse me, this/that is the library" instead of asking where... maybe if you put a question mark it would have given the correct translation of raiburari/toshyokan wa doko desu ka? Oh, and the word for library in Japanese is toshyokan.. raiburari is more foreign.

Hey nice program... i got it working, but when i try to look up japanese translations, it just shows a bunch of little boxes... i guess this is a font issue. i installed japanese fonts under windows/font, which is sufficient to view web pages in japanese, but maybe your little app uses some other method? If you know how to resolve this, please let me know, thank you.

Great app.
Needs a little tweaks on the UI. For instance, the language names should not be uppercarse. And it'd be nice if the TO language was remembered, as I do not care personnally too much about Romanian (though I understand you do ;) ).

haha, there ya go... that's more like it, it even gave the more common word for library. too bad this little app can't put it in "romaji" form so if you didn't know how to read the japanese characters you could still sound it out.

Try this From = english to = Hindi and with caps lock on type all special chars from 1 to 0 asnd clikc on translate. I get some error "unrecgnized escape character: u at wolftranslator.json.jsonreader.Fromescape().....
ALso when to = Hindi it translate ok but in transalation window all I see is sqare boxes. if i copy and paste translated text into notepad, excel or email also bring square box as well.
But if I use from my desktop (on desktop not on PPC) i see square boxs but when paste in email or word it shows actual translated text.
HOpe you can fix it in version.

Hello,
@shadowmike:
I think there's something wrong with .NET CF 3.5 on your phone. Perhaps you should try reinstalling it or just test how other .Net applications behave.
@sexuuhy!: yes, it's me
For all others: thank you very much for your advices and for pointing out problems regarding this little app.
When I find some more spare time:
- I will look more into the font issue
- I will make the startup languages configurable
- I will try to make the application more "finger friendly"
- I'll test the behavior when using special characters (the bug mentioned by v3patel)

Cool app, Very usefull for me..... Saves going to Babel :)
Look forward to an update :)
Oo.... Can i mention a few idea's pls
An option to reverse translation with one click - makes it easier to see if there will be errors in your translation.
A copy button - one click and it copies all the translated text to clipboard.
Have a look at some online translators for idea's
Maybe an option to use Yahoo translation too ?
Thanks again for this !!

just two small bugs:
-there is a black line missing above the From box.
You need to decrease the height of the "Autodetect" checkbox, or Send it behind the "From" dropdown. It is covering the top of the "From" combobox, which hides the black line

SUGGESTION
Is it possible to SAVE the translations that you do...so next time if you want to translate the same sentance, you do not have to connect to the internet , so kind of like a cache of previous translations that you have done?
It could be done like google suggest, when you start typing the sentance to be translated, it searched the cache and displays the rest of the sentance if a match is found? That way, its faster too!

It's ridiculous to apply and include political disputes in software! As this program does: w0lf's Translator v1.1
Go to page:
http://anonym.to/?http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en
as you can see Hungarian language is included!
We know there were old political disputes between Romania and Hungary. But to omit deliberately Hungarian language only because Romania has disputes with Hungary (certain people) it's ridiculous.
But the romanian author of this program did deliberately omited the Hungarian language in his program.
Simply childish.
I'm too born in Romania too and proud to be a Romanian, but to include political disputes in my software is under my dignity.
Same rasistic policy is applied by Visicom Navigator GPS Ukraine 2008 v3.2.8. Where because Ukraine has disputes with Romania has choosen to apply same rasistic attitude in this GPS software: towns with majoritary romanian population are very poor representated (no streets, building numbers, and so on...). Small towns with majoritar ukrainian population are represented with complete street and building information.
I sent all this information to Romanian authorities: parliament, newspapers and foreign ministry.
IMHO no politics or political disputes should be present in software!

AFAIK, the author of this app has never talked about politics or racism related to his software... In fact, you are the one beeing racist by taking for granted that he has not included Hungarian because he is from Romania. Why don't you just PM him and request to include Hungarian on a further release? May be he just forgot, or he has not ever been requested to include it. Racism is made out of prejudices, don't prejudge him ;).
About your last phrase, I agree that no politics or political disputes should ever exist. Neither in software or anywhere else... but hey, this is the world in wich we live...

i have no problem with other apps except for wshen they are not programed with standard support.
i reinstalled .net and still same error.
.net standard may be different with differnt coding then .net pro...
I'm also getting the same notsupportedexception error you are receiving. I have uninstalled and reinstalled .net to both my storage card and on to the phone. Either way, as soon as I start w0lfTranslator I run into an error. Help please! The program was a spectacular idea!

Can anyone else tell me if they are running on Windows 6 Standard are able to use the translator without getting a notsupportedexception error? I read a couple threads on other developers writing software and finding that pro and standard handle things a little differently.
Thanks again!

You just need to add the language support in the case of the screen cap add Japanese. There free font sets that do this and usually if you install a SIP it will add full support. I believe Google's Droid Sans fall back font would do it Droid.cab (http://www.studiokuma.com/wm/?section=support) it adds Chinese support to WWE I know which in my case is what I need. I believe it adds full Unicode set so should work for japanese also, if not do some searching for a japanese font.

Thanks OP for posting and developing this software. If we can have an option to adjust the font size it'll be great. On my Diamond VGA the fonts appear rather small.
@Psy - Thanks man that works well for Chinese language now. Now I can go to China Town in San Francisco and I can order some chinese food. Most of the Chinese here don't speak English so this will come in handy.

Zeno2, I can assure you that I have nothing to do with any political disputes. I respect Hungary and the Hungarian people just as I respect all other people.
The reason I didn't include the Hungarian language is that it was not available at the time. I developed the program in november-december 2008 and Hungarian was added in February 2009 (check this link (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/02/translate-between-41-languages-with.html)).
In the meantime I've been really busy and could not update the program, but whenever possible I will include the new languages and post an update.
@ufoss: Turkish language will also be included, since it is now supported by Google Translate :)
@not4you: I don't know a translation program that would keep the dictionary database in the device, but I'm pretty sure there are some. Mă bucur că-ţi place programul :)
@vboyz103: When I'll make a new update, I'll also take into consideration the font size configuration.

Thanks for the app! It sure helps me occasionally with my friends who don't speak English as their primary language.
Thanks also for recommending Droid, ran into the font issue while trying to help some Asian friends understand a couple of words.

Hi,
Version 1.2 gets installed next to the previous version: it does not overwrite it.
Folder for 1.1: \Program Files\w0lf Translator\
Folder for 1.2: \Program Files\W0lf's Translator 1.2\
Entry in Add/Remove for 1.1: Cristi Lupascu w0lf Translator
Entry in Add/Remove for 1.2: Cristi Lupascu W0lf's Translator 1.2
Can't you change the cab so it overwrites any previous version? Make it more easy to upgrade, as it replaces the old version. It takes less space and avoid having 2 shortcuts in the Start Menu.
Usually, putting a version number in the folder path and add/remove entry is not recommended, no?

Hello Snark_be,
Thank you for pointing out this problem. I had some technical problems with the setup project and I had to recreate it and by mistake I gave it a different Product Name. This is the cause of this behavior.
However, I have modified the setup project and built it again; the new cab can be found in the same location.

It would be nice if you could fix two small issues I've noticed.
1. At application startup, it would be nice if it defaulted to the "Text to translate" textbox. When you start it up now, it defaults to the translated text, so you have to click on the other textbox before translating.
2. Also, while using the application, the "arrow" buttons don't move between the controls on the page, so you actually have to click the screen.
Other than that, it's been great for me. Thanks!

The translator is very good. But since I dont understand Japanese characters, I hope the translator can be in A-Z instead of Japanese character. For eg.
English : Thank you
Japanese : Arigato Gozaimas
Do we have any apps who works as above?
Cheers....

Thank you for your comments.
@GeSpot:
1. You are right, I'll fix this in the next version
2. The arrow doesn't work when you have focus over certain controls. For instance, when you're over the check box, pressing the down arrow moves the focus to the next control. But in combo boxes the down arrow moves to the next element in the list (next language in our case) and in the multiline text box it moves the cursor to the next row. I'm not sure if this default behavior can be overriden.
@dannyng:
I'm not sure I can provide phonetic translation on the result. Maybe some other apps can do that.

Hi, tyakimov!
Some more people ran into this error (or other similar errors) when using the app. For the moment I don't know why this is, I think it has something to do with the Win CF Control infrastructure.
As soon as I discover the true source of the error I'll fix it and I'll provide an update.

Just installed your App
Great piece of work
Very hard to find a translator for Thai but this work flawlessly
Only thing like others have suggested would be to increase Font size seems like you have lots of room in the fields to allow it
Or can you point out a Registry entry that can be modified
My eyes arent what they used to be LOL

A note for people who reported an error when starting the application:
If by clicking on Details you see in the stack trace something like"[...]at Microsoft.AGL.Common.MISC.HandleAr[...]" it's probably because your device doesn't have enough free memory to start the program.
I recently completed a Windows Mobile app at work and some of the clients reported a similar error. I saw that one of those devices had many programs running and about 20% free memory. After closing some other programs it worked fine.
Hope this helps. :)

The languages are hardcoded in the application. This gave me the idea of implementing a new feature: a periodic auto-update via web of the list of languages available for translation.

lordmemo, you don't want to use the Ajax API; that's for web applications.
Instead, use the API for "Flash and other Non-Javascript Environments". This API is based on simple HTTP web requests.
