its your flexible.. the one who connect lcd to the motherboard of your hermes.. i had the very same problem 3 months ago. and i bought it the flexible on ebay for $50.. :(

I had the same problem. If i push the ON/OFF button twicce, one for turn off the PDA and one to turn it on again, i can see the display OK. Orange has changed me the PDA.

It is the flex cable connector that goes bad. You can get a new flex cable as mentioned before on ebay (I've seen for $35)... or you can try the other fix mentioned on the link in the first reply: disassemble the phone, put a small peice of foam (similar to memory foam) over the flex cable connector, and reassemble the phone. This worked for me. It holds the connector in tighter and the screen whiteout quit. You will need a T-6 screw driver.
