Hi!
My friend flashed his iPod with a non apple firmware. But then he had to send it in for reparation, dont remember why but it was on warranty. They did not fix his iPod because he did not use official rom.

Is it the same here?

Yes you lose your warranty rights IF you can't get the original boot loader and ROM back on before you have to send it back.

Basicly its up to you.. If you are experienced in ROM flashing and know how to get your old firmware back than you really dont need to worry about it. But if you are not so experienced and dont want to risk than you will have to wait. But from what Ive seen its really worth it at least for me. Duttys last ROM is extremly fast and overall one of best if not best firmware arround :)
