01/26/09 - This is just a minor update to fix some issues and add a couple small features.

Feel free to give comments or ask questions.

Thanks!

This program is a touch driver to handle the touchscreen presses and vibration. A settings program exists to configure how the vibration works.

Since this is a touch driver, there is no program you need to run to start it.

It has been tested on an HTC Touch and HTC Touch Pro for several days with several stability issues corrected. I am only releasing this now that I feel comfortable that you will experience no major issues. However, I cannot guarantee that it will work flawless for you. I cannot be held responsible for any loss of data or time you may experience while using this.

If you are experiencing problems after installation, please let me know so I can fix these issues.

Features

Global enable/disable option
Vibrate on touch/release
Variable duration of vibrate
Disable during Phone Call option
Disable when device is silent
Disable when device is locked
Disable when stylus is out (for devices that support this option)
Enabled for On-Screen Keyboard only (Temporary option until full include/exclude list is incorporated)
Settings Program->Settings->System->TouchResponse Settings
AppToDate (http://www.apptodate.org/get) support

Coming Soon

Include/Exclude list for vibration
Different vibration patterns
Resolve any software conflicts
Vibration tweaks
Sound on touch
Vibrate on hardware button press
Multi-language support in Settings program
I'm open to suggestions...

Known Issues

May or may not play well with touchflo/ftouchsl. If TouchResponse isn't working for you, try disabling those if they are enabled.
Disable when device is silent may not work on some devices. Let me know what kind of device you have if this is the case for you.

Questions and Answers
Q. How to I change the settings?
A. Start->Settings->System->TouchResponse Settings

Q. Why do I not see the settings program?
A. For some phones, the settings program does not appear in the control panel. Until I figure out a fix, you can run the program by going to \windows\TouchResponseSettings.cpl

Q. Why is it not vibrating when I touch the screen?
A. Go to the Device tab in TouchResponse Settings. It will display information about your device. If it says to select your vibrate id then find the one that causes the vibrate to work. Send me a PM with the name of your device model along with the vibrate id that works for you and I will incorporate that into future releases.

Q. Will this drain my battery life?
A. I don't have any statistics to show the before and after battery usage. However, I personally have not experienced any significant increase in battery usage. It all depends on how long the vibrate duration is and how often you touch the screen.

Q. Why does the vibrate last longer than it's supposed to sometimes?
A. This should hopefully be resolved as of version .02.2. If you experience this after this version, please let me know when it happens and how often.

Q. Why is the vibration always the same duration no matter what the settings are set at?
A. Use a registry editor to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>OEM>VIB and set STRENGTH_LOW to 0. Thanks to agdaniels for pointing this out. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3134815&postcount=449)

Please don't post this cab on any other site. Let's keep all discussion here. I appreciate your cooperation.

Thank you for your support!

Nice idea, thanks for sharing.

I read about a phone (I think it was LG Incite?) where some people complained about vibrating even when entering text with the soft-keyboard.

Could you give us an option to dis-/enable vibrating when entering text ? Maybe there´s an event you can use when the soft-keyboard flips up...dunno

regards,
Martin

Since the driver has first crack at the touch event, I should be able to determine which window is being touched and either vibrate/not-vibrate depending on how it's configured. For example, I can see that the SIP is being touched and not vibrate. I'll add that to the list, Thanks!

Just as Martin said.

When typng on the on screen keyboard. Vibrate on every button of the keyboard we pressing. That would be awesome.

Gonna test this on the X1i

Well I guess I will put my suggestion here as I did with the other 2 programs like it.:) Would you consider creating a setting to were it is only active on SIP Keyboard AND when SIP keyboard is active I have choice between a vibration or a sound or both?

I know I can get a sound by going to the general settings of winmo but when it is on it makes a noise for all screen taps...annoying!!

Since this is a similar comment among everyone I will focus on this next. Thanks everyone for your feedback!

how about different types and lengths of viberations like the old motos used to have? dash-dash-dash-buzzz haha

maybe different intensities if possible?

I've always wanted 'heptic feedback' on my KS20 but non works for me. I've tried Heptick Feedback, Vibration Feedback and now TouchResponse, none work for KS20. Duh.... :(

Can these options be added?
1. Not to vibrate when on silent?
2. Change buzz length (make it shorter/less intense)
3. An "use only when SIP activated" option.

You may have tried something similar with the other programs you have tried, but you can try changing the Led Id in the Settings program under the Advanced tab. Be sure to press ok to make the settings to into effect. Hopefully it is just a case where the KS20 doesn't use the default Led Id for vibrate.

1. Yes, this is something I want to add! It's sometimes hard to go unnoticed when I use my phone in meetings at work when the vibration is loud. :)
2. Did you see the Settings program in the System tab of the "Control Panel"? Or do you mean a something like a longer buzz but less intense?
2. I'm going to be focusing on that with an include/exclude option next.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hey hey, it works for KS20 for the first time!!!!

I set the LED from 0 to 3 and hey, 3 works.

0 - LED displays green
1 - LED displays red
2 - LED displays blue
3 - it worked! :)

Thank you soo much! I gotta spread this on the KS20 thread because a lot of KS20 users are wanting this like me. I'll link them here.

Just want to echo what's already said. What most ideally want is for vibration to be active ONLY on keyboard when text entering and to be as brief a buzz as possible. Some owners type very fast and we want the buzz to keep up and not still lag on the previous tap while tapping on the next key. It has to be super quick and not miss a key press when typing quickly. Thanks! :)

I've used a couple different Samsung phones with the haptic feedback (HF) option and really liked the way it was done. Using the HTC Touch Pro now, I can honestly say it's the only thing I really miss as it gave a pretty realistic response to button pushes. So I gotta say I like what you've done so far.

I only have one suggestion in regards to the vibration, not sure it can be done or not with what you have but I'll try to describe it. On the two phones I've tried which had built in HF, they had two different types of vibration, one vibration set for when a button was pushed down the other set for the button being released. When done in rapid succession it gave the impression of a button push and release. It's hard to explain but it felt like a ramp up when you touched a button and ramp down as you released it.

Hope that makes sense. Maybe others can try to explain it better. But it really gave a (from a touch perspective) realistic feel to button pushes.

I haven't tried that program but this program and my program may seem to act similar. The difference is that mine is a touch driver. That means if there is any touch at all, it has to go through me first. Whereas I'm assuming the program you linked has to listen for a windows message that says a touch occurred which could cause the vibrate to lag behind the actual touch.

Another thing is that since I have control of the actual touch event, I am able to determine where on the screen the touch occurred whereas if you're only watching the windows messages you don't have that information. This will come in handy when I incorporate including/excluding touches on certain windows.

At least I believe that is the case...:)

Actually, that was something I experimented with in an early version of TouchResponse. I thought it was pretty neat but needed a lot of tweaking so I shelved that idea in order to get this project in a stable-release state. I'll be looking into adding something like that in the future as an option. Thanks for the idea!

Omnia outside the US and Instinct within the US. Those were the only two I played with. I had the Instinct for 3 months before the Touch Pro finally became available.

I guess I'm the only one who has a problem.....

My phone is a Hermes / 8525 / TyTN.

Everything works fine after install, settings are ok and vibrate is fine. However after I leave the phone idle for a while, THE TOUCHSCREEN IS DISABLED. No joke, I touch my screen and nothing. I had to soft-reset which thankfully revived my touchscreen. Just for testing sakes, I left it idle again and sure enough, my touchscreen gets disabled again.

So for now, I've uninstalled it. If it helps, the only programs constantly running on my PDA are S2U2 and M2D.

Ah, I gotcha. Yeah I've played with the Instinct a little bit and liked the vibration response. I'll look into getting different patterns of vibrations to mimic that. Thanks!

I know from using the Instinct and now the Touch Pro that they have two different system calls for the buttons, a press call and a release call. I suspect most touch phones have a similar situation. Could probably verify it with your own by pressing a button holding it for a few seconds then releasing it. If the button waits until you release it to show the released state, launch an app or perform it's function, then it has two system calls. One for the press state and one for the release state.

If the button reverts back to it's unpressed state while your still holding it, then there is just one system call.

Hope that makes sense as well. :)

Well at least it's vibrating... When you change the duration in the settings app, are you clicking ok to close it? The settings don't go into effect until you click ok in the top right corner. If that doesn't do it, try setting it to a different value, close the settings app and then soft reset. The touch driver should load with the updated duration. If not, let me know. Hmm, it seems like something is preventing the settings app to update the registry setting. Can you try editing the registry key manually? HKCU\Software\Snailslug\TouchResponse\Duration?

You will have to soft-reset in order to load the driver with the new settings.

Or actually, if you edit the registry manually, try running the settings program again to see if your change shows up there and then press ok. The settings program sends a signal to the driver to reload the settings.

See if that works.

Bug found! The phone dial pad in my htc diamond will ignore the duration set in the parameters.
I use the default WM6 dialer if that makes any difference.

Same behaviour is seen when clicking on start ->settings

Other than that, lovely job!

Same problem as shown by Peron. Using Sprint Diamond and stock dialer. Very impressed with your program and look forward to future versions.

Great app... thanks.

Feedback was one of the very few features I missed on my Diamond when upgrading from an Instinct. The ability to set the vibrate length on this makes it feel nicer than the Instinct feedback.

Looking forward to being able to exclude vibration on games, certain 3rd party apps, etc. Scrolling vibrate (like the Instinct) would be sweet also.

The perfect vibration feedback would actually be the one used in the HTC game named TEETER, when the ball touch a the wall.

There should be a way to find into the manilla registry the command corresponding to the TEETER vib.

I have an HTC Vouge and I've been trying to get this sort of effect myself. I've tried many applications and as far as I can tell, with all the WM6.1 roms I've cooked or tried (and that's quite a few), this phone will ONLY vibrate for a fixed period of time. When you reset, or run Android, it will gladly vibrate for any given length though. Perhaps a driver issue? Something not being implemented? Please PM me if you want/need a hand with investigating this further.

yes that is how i close it. but still no go. :(

Thanks for the feedback.

EDIT: Just realized that the 'Known Issue' mentioning the Verizon 'Leaked ROM' was the issue I'm experiencing. The issue isn't a particular ROM though, it appears more likely to be WM6.1 on the 6900 period.

Thank you for your hard work that you put into developing this program. Works real nicely on my Sprint Touch Diamond.
One suggestion would be not to have it vibrate while I am scrolling thru threads, in other words, while I am swiping from the beginning to the end of a thread or whatever I am viewing.
But thatis probably what others are suggesting when they mention that they would like to have the vibrate activate in SIP
only.
I notice some sporadic changes in the length of the vibrate duration while I am inputing text, but it happens so infrequently that it does not warrant me to change any settings.
Thanks again for the this great application.
By the way, I put the word out about your program on www.ppcgeeks.com and the members over there really like your program and the hard work you put into developing this program.
The thread over their has approximately 800 hits at this time and about 40 posts. :)

Feature Request: I would love to be able to disable the vibration when the device is locked. I can feel it vibrating in my pocket if i bump it.

Small Bugs: I had the "Touch screen disabled after resuming from suspend" problem once yesterday on my touch pro but have not been able to replicate it, just loaded up 02 so I will keep an eye out. Also occasionally the vibration feedback is more intense (longer duration) when i click towards the middle of the screen, the previous poster said this happened on his keyboard but It happened to me on the keyboard and in SPB mobile shell interface. I hope that helps.

Thanks, this program is awesome!!

Hey I just wanted to say that this application is awsome by far the best Vibration application available. I'm using this for on the HTC Diamond.

Definitely very nice app! I'm using it on my Diamond since yesterday v0.1, gonna d/l v0.2 now to update a little. Only thing I'm noticing is the already reported issue where it sometimes vibrates a little longer but I only usually feel that when opening the start menu. Its been, I'd say 90% consistently 15ms stabs all the way through. Only thing I'd like to see is maybe a little more tweaking to get the stabs as stable as possible and adding exclusions/exceptions list for different programs and most of all an option to have this enabled only when the SIP is turned on and if possible, and I know it gets complicated here, only the screen area that the SIP takes up.

I'm going to be watching this one carefully, love it!

I love this app. I think it's a great addition to any WM phone. I particularly have the Xperia X1 and haven't tried .02 yet, but hope it fixes the touch-screen failure problem.

One suggestion though and I don't know how possible this really is:
It would be awesome if it only vibrated if you clicked on a viable/clickable thing. ex: if I click on the start button it vibrates, but if I click on an empty spot on my today screen that doesn't do anything when I click it, it doesn't vibrate. I expect this will add to the tactile feedback this application adds to WM.

Thanks for the work!

The 02. version is a nice update. First thing I noticed was the addition of the disable while silent. I appreciate the work that went into this app. Small program size is great. I haven't noticed any real impact on battery life so far and I was looking for a difference. Ran 0.1 all day with average use and found little if any impact on battery life. That's a big plus for those of us with Vogues, Diamonds and other HTC battery vampires. Definitely going to recommend this one to the masses at ppcgeeks and will follow the request to keep the support here. Thanks again Snailslug for the app!

Hey man this looks like a REALLY great app, I really like the way you have put the settings on the actual settings menu, and the options you have provided for adjusting.

Unfortunately, it doesnt quite work on my device! I have a Samsung i760. It is definitely doing someting... instead of causing the phone to vibrate, it causes the LED to blink. I tried all of the possible settings on the LED drop down, 0-7, and each change caused the LED to blink a different color. The duration works as well, and causes the light to blink shorter or longer.

I there is any information I can provide to you, or any way I can assist to get this working on the i760, I would be more than happy to as I would really like to have this working on my phone!

EDIT: the i760 is running WM 6.1, OEM/factory rom... no custom roms for this phone yet :( but yeah your app is definitely doing something, works great to make the LED blink, jut no vibrate!

sprint touch here, works perfect with stock & custom rom. works amazing! just for sip & add a sound like the click from the storm would be great! thanks!
Some phones already have the ability to turn on a click. I actually thought the Touch had this ability, a buddy of mine has the Touch from Sprint as well and I remember his making a clicking sound when you touched things on the UI. Anyway, on the Touch Pro, I have the click enabled, that and the vibration give some positive feedback to button pushes.

I'm waiting now to see if he can link it to the actual button API calls on the phone, i.e. button press, button release. This would serve a couple purposes. It could give a vibration that represents a push and another that represents a release adding to the realism of pressing and releasing a button. It would also only vibrate when actual buttons are pushed opposed to just touching the screen.

A number of times in Opera I went to scroll and the vibration caused a double tap on the screen which resulted in a zoom. Other instances of that have happened as well in programs that allow a pan. Is it gonna make me turn it off? Hell no. :)

I do not understand what the settings actually change?
- What is LED?
- what is Priority ?

stutzedward

I am not sure if I explain it correctly but...

LED - the appropriate 'hardware' to trigger the vibration. For my LG-KS20, when I select 0, 1 and 2, the LED on the phone blinks Green, Red and Blue. On setting '3', it triggers the vibrator motor.

Priority - the priority for the CPU to handle the trigger to vibrate.

how about making a list of which LEDs are compatible with which phones and then add a list control, so we just have to choose our model..or even better, auto-recognition of the phone model. Is this possible ?

Samsung sch-i760 : screen does not freeze up with new version! but still no vibration... hopefully next version. Thanks for the continued development

I posted more detail on this as well back on page 13 of this thread. It "works" in the sense that it does trigger the LED to blink on screen taps, and even configuring the duration causes the light to blink shorter or longer. But all of the LED options just cause the light to blink a different color.

Someone mentioned above that the Samsung Omnia vibration would be LED 11, which is not supported yet.... so I'm sure the i760 is just some other number, though I'm not sure how to find this information (I'm sure it's in registry somewhere).

I did decide to lower the vibration time; I thought the default was just a bit too long. Now it's set for 30ms.

I downloaded the newest version yesterday and everything was working fine until a few minutes ago.
My phone is in silent Mode but the vibrate touch response is not turning off.
I did the following to try to correct the issue:
1) I removed and downloaded the newest version again.
2) My Diamond did a soft reset.
3) I set the vibrate off mode while the device is set to silent.
4) It still vibrated so I did a soft reset.
5) It still vibrates while the Diamond is in silent mode.

A small issue and not a big deal but I just wanted to let you know.
Thanks.

Interesting. Mine also vibrates in silent mode even though I have it set to disabled. I worked perfectly yesterday.

Also, I've noticed the vibration is longer when doing anything in the start menu or opera.

I toggled the volume rockers on my Diamond again. I did this before which I failed to mention in my other post.
I did this a couple of times.
EVERYTHING IS WORKING FINE NOW!
The Diamond did one of its common freezes so BLAME IT ON THE DIAMOND.
Funny thing is that the DIAMOND showed it was in silent mode but I guess it was an internal thing.
Sorry for the false alert lol!

Toggle a few times.
If it does not work, try a soft reset. You know, the thing we do several times a day with the Diamond lol!

I installed it and it wont work though. I tried all of the different led settings in the advanced tab and went to the registry and still nothing. Is this common on the mogul????

So i finally tried this app and WOW, it works amazingly, but i have a request

Is it possible to set it so that my phone vibrates on all inputs? Hard buttons and keyboard? I have a touch pro and i find it out, but i miss feeling feedback vibrations when i do something not on the screen. It would be an unneccesary but cool to me feature :D

Thanks to everyone who have tried TouchResponse and have given valuable feedback. The response I have received from this project has been overwhelming but very much welcome. It was definitely not what I expected!

This latest release is an attempt to help solve some issues with phone compatibility and reliability. I am wanting to get this project as stable as I can before introducing any additional major features.

Unless there are additional pressing issues are identified, I am planning on the next release to include the inclusion/exclusion list that many have been asking for.

Thanks for your support!

You DA Man! In my evaluation, I noticed that there are differences in vib strength on my today screen. I'm using SPB Pocket Plus 4, and when I togle tabs I get the same stronger response that others have reported in clicking the start menu. By no means a gripe as this app is a new fave. Kudos and keep 'em coming!

Looks like this version fixes the longer vibration while in the start menu. Awesome work!

When you add exclusions, please provide a way to enable vibration feedback only for the SIP. My main reason for getting this was to enhance the on screen keyboard (which it has, greatly!).

And lastly, another idea I had is regarding the stylus. It would be nice have an option that disables vibration if the stylus is taken out.

THANK YOU!! Love this app.

I REALLY want to try this app out but I can't make it work.
I have a Sprint Mogul and I went through all the IDs. (Version 2.2)

Was I supposed to restart after changing the ID? If not, then I don't know whats wrong.

The new version 2.2 is not working well in my KS20. After upgrading from 2.1, the vibration in 2.2 is very strong eventho the setting is the same, at 60ms, hence when I hit the screen, it 'double taps' each iFonz icon I have twice, launching the program again and again. I can't even swipe the screen to change the iFonz menu page with my fingers. Hence I need to use the stylus softly hitting the option I want to go to Setting to disable the TouchResponse.

I've reverted back to 2.1. I guess I'll stick with 2.1 for now.

HI SS, thanks for looking into this. This is happening even with iFonz closed, means when I tap on the Start, it double taps. I think the double tap is the result of very strong vibration. I had a hard time going into the Settings option to disable the Touch Response.

I installed and it worked the first time I tried it but after trying a lower vibrate level and soft reset, I cannot get it to work, even if I return it to the original settings. Snailslug you rock! As a Samsung i760 owner... it often feels like being an outcast or redheaded stepchild here on XDA, since it's a non-HTC device.

But here you are working to include EVERYONE with this fantastic little app of yours, and only a couple days after a couple of us i760 owners posted here the results we were getting, you come out with a revision that works perfectly for our phones.

This works very well, however im curious as to weather or not its possible to only have the feedback when you activate a function, for example right now it vibrates when ever you touch anywhere on the screen, this isn't very informative, if for example it would only vibrate when you actually press a function or a button?

Maybe the next version could allow ftouchflo to be used? I'm guessing they use the same driver which is what causes the conflict. Great program. BTW, churka, just wanna make sure ur not confusing ftouchflo with touchflo (as in manila 2d or 3d). ftouchflo is just a finger scrolling app. touchflo works fine.

Really great program you've made. If we only had more new users "first posts" like that ;)
Anyway, this software works great on toshiba g900, and doesn't conflict too much with fTouchSL (unlike other similar programs i've tried). For a standard tap action the vibration can be felt immediately, for a ftouchSL drag and gesture actions there's no vibration at all (which isn't really a bad thing). For tap-and-hold action, the vibration is felt after ftouchSL's gesture timeout, which is a great thing since this is the moment when ftouchSL starts passing raw input data to the OS and you can perform default actions like drag-select or dragging a scrollbar. Actually feeling this moment helps a lot :D
I'd love to see such functionality implemented into ftouchSL, but before that happens i thing i'll stick to your software. Thanks a lot and keep it up :D

mr_deimos
28th November 2008, 11:49 PM
The LED setting is the effect of lack of a single standard. Some time ago, PDA's (without phone module) used only LEDs (light emitting diodes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-emitting_diode), in case you don't know what it is) to signal device state to the user. Different devices could have different number of leds, and use them for different functions, so system "sees" them only by their number - led0, led1, etc. If 00 is the power led, a notification led, or something completely different is device-dependent. Things got worse when pda's got phone modules. Since they became phones, people wanted to have all functions phones can offer, including vibration alarm. Someone came up with a good idea to hook up the vibration motor instead of one of the signal leds. This way existing API could be used without any modifictions, and there was no need to modify the OS at all. And everything would be great if everyone connected the vibe as the same led number. But there's no unified standard and every company hooks it up differently. Probably it's part manufacturers' fault since they seem to connect vibra and LEDs randomly, partially it's microsoft's fault, since they don't even propose standard LED layout. So now we do have easy access to vibration motors from programs, as long as we know where to look for them.
If your device has vibration alarm, this program will probably work. You'll just need to experiment with different LED numbers. Some can light up ledss on your device, some won't do anything at all, and only one will activate vibration. So if you found it, you can stop looking ;)

Thank you for the detailed info.
Good to know.
I did not know the story behind the LED value.
I thought that if the vibrate was intermittent regarding intensity, a change in the value would correct this issue.
But now I know that the value you choose either activates vibrate upon touch or it doesn't.
Btw, the LED value on my Sprint Touch Diamond is 1.

A little proposal, Snailslug: since this program is getting a lot of attention and the tread grows really fast (23 pages in 5 days? Not bad :D ), how about editing the first post with a list of devices that are confirmed to work along with their proper led numbers? This way you might get _a bit_ less questions like "hi, i'm to lazy to search the tread so pls tell me what led num should i set for xxxx?" ;)
So Toshiba g900 - as i said before works great, LED#0

Not exactly, but very nice. I'm hoping Snail can make some adjustments in future releases to make it even more realistic like the Instinct's Press/Release feeling. I know he's posted that he wants to get it as stable as he can for all devices before adding features (message #172 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=450256&page=18)). Are you not able to change the response time on your phone? Or does it just not work at all on your phone?

Can't change the response time, installed just fine and defaulted on the proper channel.

What about within the registry, have you tried to manually change it there as well?

\HKCU\Software\Snailslug\TouchRespone
DWORD: Duration

You will probably have to soft reset after the change though, so try a big jump or you may not notice a difference at all. Let us know.

Daniels, we will probably have to wait to see if Snail can figure it out then. You may want to post your phone model and what verizon ROM your having the problem with so he has the necessary information.

Sorry to hear your having such a problem.
