View Full Version : Fuze Questions

I'm an iPhone 2g user looking to upgrade. I had a Tilt that I had to return because of some soft-reset bug it had. I called HTC and they said it was hardware related, so I sent it back for the iPhone.

I love my iPhone. It does everything I need it to do very well. I love safari (although flash would be nice), I love the Music player, and I love the quickness of the interface. That being said, however, I'm a pharmacy student, and I need certain software for class and internships. The iPhone does have epocrates, but it's limited in what it can do...

I played with the Fuze today, but it couldn't connect to the network (The employee told me the manager messed something up???) I didn't get to try out some of the key features I wanted to.

Some questions I have:

1: Touchflow. when is started using the phone, touchflow was SLOOOW. I was able to pan my way over the the Photos tab, but once there, there was no more scrolling. I could tap icons to move to the next menu, but it was very very sluggish??? I found there were a couple of programs running in the background, and once I closed them out, it was responsive again. But, how many programs can be running before it is unusable???

2: Touch screen: The touch screen had some selective response at times. I noticed that when using the stylus, it sometimes didn't pick up my input. This was especially evident in the upper right portion of the screen (when I wanted to X out of programs). Is this a common issue, or is it something wrong with the device? Or is it just me not knowing how to use a stylus?!

3: Hardware question: I wasn't able to make, or even pretend to make a call because it couldn't connect to the network, and because it had the security wires on it. But, how usable is the volume rocker switch mid-call? are there issues using it because of the sliding keyboard? Also, is there a proximity sensor on the phone, to dim the screen in a call???

4: SMS/MMS: The 2nd main reason I'm considering the fuze over the iphone 3g is the MMS. Anybody have any pictures or description of how the Text messages are handled by the fuze? I'm not familiar with how windows mobile manages them!

5: Email: I'm no power email user, but I do read them on the road. How does WM6 handle emails???? I have a gmail account...

6: Opera: I've heard good things about the browser, but again, no network = no opera use. how is opera? Does it support flash?

7: Malware??? Are windows phones prone to malware???

8: One handed operation? I love how the iPhone is mostly 1 handed. I take the trolly to school daily, and sometimes i only have 1 hand free. does touchflow allow me to operate the phone completely 1 handed??? Can I type up a text message using the screen and no stylus???

9: Media player: Will I need to buy a new iPod to listen to my media? Or does the Fuze's onboard stuff allow me to play my music well enough???

10: FM radio? The Sony Xperia has an onboard FM radio program. Is this something the HTC can do as well???

I have more questions as well, but I'll start with this. Thanks for all your help!

Need to flash a cooked ROM. All the ROMs I've tried so far has better response time for Touchflow and actually makes it usable. I would say this is just the stock ROM with all the bloated "stuff" making it unusable.

Same as above. Mine is very responsive.

The screen can be dimmed while in a call or you can disable it. The volume keys at the side works well... don't use them much.

4: SMS/MMS: The 2nd main reason I'm considering the fuze over the iphone 3g is the MMS. Anybody have any pictures or description of how the Text messages are handled by the fuze? I'm not familiar with how windows mobile manages them!

Not sure about this. I just use SMS, no MMS, although I have tested it and it works fine.

5: Email: I'm no power email user, but I do read them on the road. How does WM6 handle emails???? I have a gmail account...

It has several ways of configuring emails. I am checking my emails via IMAP, including GMAIL and it works fine. I have 3 email accounts I check via IMAP and I have no issues with it.

6: Opera: I've heard good things about the browser, but again, no network = no opera use. how is opera? Does it support flash?

Works fine and does support flash.

7: Malware??? Are windows phones prone to malware???

Never ran into this or thought of looking. :)

You can use it 1 handed but not sure coming from the iPhone how it would compare.

The best thing I can recommend to you is to order the Fuze and test it out. You have 30 days to return it. If you don't like it and it doesn't meet your requirements then no need to keep it. I don't have any experience with the iPhone so I can't offer you any comparison. I had the Tilt before and liked it a lot. I had it to a point where it did everything I needed and VERY quickly. I also have the Fuze setup the same way and I'm happy with it.

Good luck.

9) Yes, handles media well. You can get 16GB memory card for about $30 to have as much storage as your old iPhone (and no need to mess with ITunes). The only gripe about media I have is that the unit doesn't have a 3.5 audio jack (though it comes with an adapter)

10) The stock FUZE rom doesn't have the radio app, but it's an easy .cab to find. The headphones have to be connected for radio to work, as it uses the headphones as an antenna

stevieraveon...you've found a 16gb microsd for $30? If this is true, and you're not confusing it with regular SD, i'm sure myself and several others on the forum would love to know where! :)

I was curious as to what to expect before ordering my Fuze.

What kinds of issues / complaints are Fuze/Raphael users having???
(For example, on my Tilt, there was a soft-reset issue. On my iPhone 2g, there's a sub-par earpiece speaker, recessed headphone jack, no copy/paste/MMS, etc).

2 Questions:

1: Music: Is there a way to skip songs while the phone is in "standby mode" (or whatever the blacked out screen shows)? On my iPhone 2g, I can either use the headphone's mic as a button, or I can double click the main button, and guestimate where the Skip forward button would appear on the touchscreen. (Both tricky things to do when walking)...

2: Syncing: How many computers can you sync a windows mobile device with? My main computing machine is a Mac, which I love. However, I'm aware I may need to use a PC for syncing some things (like software). Can I have the phone sync to two machines? (The iPhone only likes one...)

I really have no complaints about the Fuze other than the stock at&t ROM. If you really wanna enjoy your phone, your gonna have to flash a cooked ROM; the AT&T one is just way to slow to use. Besides that the phone is great. You MAY have problems with the GPS, but if you do flash the .28 radio you should be fine.

Hope that helps

being able to control music while in standbye depends on whether you use third party software or not. i use conduits pocket player and it allows control via headset and avrcp while in standby.

you can sync the device with two comps at the same time so you should be fine

if i remember correctly u can still use the D-PAD when the phone is in standby to skip, FF, rewind and pause ur music
like right for skip, hold it for FF, left for backo and if u press it in it will pause

i used to have an old desktop that i used as a media center with all my mp3s on there
so i used to sync everything on my laptop, contacts, calender... but on my desktop when i setup my device with active sync, i olny chose to sync music.

now on the fuze has an extra option, i believe you can connect the fuze to any pc or mac and have it show up as a mass storage device!!! like a flash drive, so u dont need any software (activesyc, iTunes) or any drivers to transfer files!!! (very office friendly)

I realize it's to fix problems, and I'm aware all phones (or electronics for that matter) are prone to issues. I was kind of hoping, though, that people would chime in and make a list of the biggest known issues with the Fuze.

For example, I heard rumors that fresh out of the package, there's an issue with the speaker being too quiet.

Can anybody confirm this???!!! In my eyes this would make the media app on the fuze more powerful than my iPhone.

I frequently skip through songs, but having the lack of buttons on the iPhone means I need to reach for my neck, to use the headphone button...take the phone out of my pocket (not good in the rain...).... or double click the home button in my pocket, and tap around on the screen until i discover the SKIP button...

Also, while you're confirming the D-pad, can you tell me if the volume toggle works to manage the music volume as well??? (For directly connected headphones (Wired) or bluetooth headphones (Wireless))

1. For just using the phone, in Windows Media, in it's settings>buttons there is a toggle screen (I set it to hold left since I don't use previous) and I can use all the buttons after I toggle screen (Turns screen off).

2. For wired and wireless headsets, do the same as #1 or buy a headset that has music buttons and is an A2DP headset, those can change songs and volume and everything even when the pphone is in standby.

Syncing with multiple computers is no problem, but you can only sync mail/outlook with one computer. Had a WM device synched with with 3 machines before. Active sync will have different profiles/names to each computer you sync it with. Not sure what the limit is.

Syncing with exchange server is pretty awesome though. Too bad my companies security cert expired though... active sync doesn't like that. Need to have net admin get that updated cert :)

as for music I have an a2dp stereo bluetooth headset with controls and it works great, with the screen on or off. It does cause the youtube app to lag though, not sure why...

Well autocorrect/autocomplete seems to be broken but this is prolly rom related. Still looking for a way to nix out that xt9 junk... voice command also seems to be partially broken, but again rom/software related.

I miss having a tab button on the keyboard :) seems to be the only key/button that I really miss having, it was nice having a mail button but mail is easy enough to get to with TF3d. Left and right on the dpad seem to have a sweet spot.

Of course it is a fingerprint disaster, really wish that the back wasn't glossy :) it looks great when its clean.

All in all no major complaints.

I think the D-Pad or whatever you refer to the directional controls at the bottom of the Fuze only reliably work for up and down. Left seems to work better for me than right (probably because I'm right handed). But overall, using the D-Pad is irritating.
Trying to use the D-Pad around the middle button for playing games sucks.
Also, with some older apps, I'm running into a situation where if I switch from the old app (for example, PocketAtari) to the main screen TF3D or accidently hit the key that brings up the main screen, I can't switch back to pocketatari, and I can't really use the main screen either, it's like they switch back and forth and I can't really get either application to become the focus or active window.

Anyway, as usual, the stock ROM with the FUZE is meh. Best bet is to replace it with either the NATF ROM or romeos. I'm using romeos 1.40.1 right now, looking to flash to 1.50 when that stabilizes.

overall, I miss my tilt in a lot of ways. Even the gimmicky tilt feature is better to have than not to have. The bottom buttons on the front of the kaiser/tilt are way better in my opinion that those on the Fuze.

I don't understand what HTC was thinking. Change to a VGA screen and add a G-Sensor to the kaiser, and you've got a sweet device. Oh and use the newer MSM7200 series chip running at 528MHz and keep that FM radio feature turned on too... pretty sweet kaiser/tilt that would be. Keep it simple, stick to what worked...

To sum up:
D-Pad: crap. only good for up and down. not good for games.
MicroSD slot requires taking the back plate off to access. Not a huge deal, but I liked the kaiser's little cover at the bottom.
Fingerprints- yeah. get a screenprotector for sure. even with a protector, fingerprints all over the device (not just screen).
It slides the other way (for those of you with 8525s I guess it slides the "right" way?) Personally I like the kaiser slide direction and am used to it.

the cool:
it's faster than the kaiser. seems noticably faster than the kaiser when compared side by side. (both using custom roms)
video with you-tube pretty cool, smooth.
G-sensor is sorta neat, not always that responsive, but the Teeter game is great in my opinion. lotta people find it really addicting for awhile.
hTorch is awesome. the LED light on the FUZE/Touch Pro is really actually very useful with that hTorch app.
battery life is meh. Kaiser seemed better and seemed like it has a bigger battery, the battery on the fuze is freaking tiny.
True VGA screen is probably the main reason I went with the fuze... it's better than QVGA.

Hope that helps.

At least you know what you are getting into. It's the next step in the evoluton of HTC/Windows Mobile devices.

As an aside question: If you reflash to somebody else's rom, Is it possible to go back to the factory rom easily???

I'm just a little wary about modifying something to that extent! I don't have the $$$ to replace it if I brick it!

Off the bat, plan on running HardSPL and getting a new ROM. I'd suggest going with the one in my sig. If you start from scratch, you will like the phone a lot more. It is stable and awesome without TouchBlo. It SUCKS with TouchBlo.

Other than that, it's a fingerprint magnet. You can revert to factory SPL and ROM easily.

The Fuze's D-Pad sucks. If you liked to play emulators on your Tilt, you might as well get the Fuse on a second line and keep it around as a Game Boy, or get used to watching movies on your phone instead.

This thread has some good, honest feeback: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446520

Fundamental flaw - TF3D couldn't mask WM's 'touch unfriendliness' heh... WM just depends on the stylus too much to get the job done, in it's current iteration.

I'm looking to upgrade my iPhone to the Fuze. I've been reading rumors that a new iPhone and Windows 7 will be out next year.

So, if I bought the Fuze now, would I be able to upgrade to windows mobile 7 easily? Or is it not how windows mobile phones work (As in, I'm stuck with Mobile 6.1 forever)???

Should I just save my money and wait and see what 2009 brings???

Yes, you would be able to upgrade to WM7. I am not sure what the hardware requirements will be, but I'm sure the Fuze will be able to handle it. Its just a simple ROM flash, takes 10 min or less.

FYI if your looking for a phone that is completely customizable, this is the one. The iPhone really is a good phone, if thats all you want. You can tweak this phone until the cows come home. :)

Well, my biggest concern at the moment is Media. I'm not sure if you can beat the iPhone in terms of playing music and video. I listen to my music CONSTANTLY on my iPhone, and I don't feel like buying a new phone and an iPod. If you can convince me that the Fuze is a great iPod alternative too, it'll be a much easier decision!

As far as customization goes, I'm also a little wary. My primary computer is a Macbook Pro (Love it... and the iPhone integrates very well... but again, the iPhone is lacking in many departments). I do have access to an Dell running XP for loading Roms, but I'm afraid I'd brick my phone! I think the only real things I'd want to change on it are getting rid of the AT&T Crap and adding the Radio program...

Rumours say whatever crap. Hardware wise, the fuze is able to run, but not to WinMo7's full potential. It will still run though. Soon enough, iPhone will be hacked to run WinMo and Android. That's the day I buy an iPhone.

It's hard to believe the Fuze wont be able to handle all of windows mobile 7. It is the latest and greatest, right? I don't see how you could really fit a bigger processor into a phone and get any kind of battery life with it.

And I would tend to think (mind you, I'm not a big software follower....) that with Apple and Microsoft starting to slim down their OS's, that Windows Mobile 7 would be a more streamlined OS (So I would think it could run on even older phones than the Fuze)

Windows Mobile 7 is rumored to support capacitive touch screens, which the FUZE does not have. Capacitive are like the iPhone and G1 screen.

Ah. I didn't realize the reason WM phones didn't have capacitive was software . I just assumed every manufacturer just stuck with the tried-and-true resistive screens so they can use the stylus....

But microsoft must still be supporting the resistive screens....

Don't bother buying this device if you don't want to run Windows Mobile 6.1. WM 6.5 will be out sometime next year and WM 7 probably won't be widely available until the year after. By that time, there will be new WM hardware out that blows the Raphael platform out of the water. Buy a device that you know you are going to be happy with from day 1. At this point, we really don't know what WM 6.5 and WM 7 will be like. The recent screenshots are almost certainly fakes.

If you want what the Fuze offers now, buy the Fuze. If you think and iPhone would be better for you right now, buy an iPhone. Both are probably upgradable, but nobody knows what iPhone 3.0 or WM 6.5/7 will have in store, so it's foolish to make a buying decision based on it.

gizzy - i have a few thousand songs on my fuze (8 gig card) and also listen to it constantly. I use slide2play to listen to my music, but there are tons of different players. It really is the best phone out there in my opinion with almost unlimited customizing as people come out with new stuff and apps. Here is my recently written review of the phone on my blog - http://www.politicaldisgust.com/2008/12/05/att-htc-fuze-review/

WinMo doesn't really integrate very well with the Mac OS, so unless you're running windows on your Mac or are willing to pay an extra $30 or so for software WinMo isn't for you.

I'll be swapping out my iPhone 2g for the Fuze or an iPhone 3g. I was playing with the Fuze today, and 3/5 times TF3D wouldn't really operate very smoothly. There were no other applications running...

The 1 handed use of the phone seems nice (Especially coming from an iPhone... and even more being a commuter on a train where you need 1 hand to grab onto a handle bar), as does the top-screen functions.

I cant remember how my TILT was with just the main window's screen, but can I access applications from the standard windows mobile homescreen?

Is there a Media Player that's better than what HTC had (Looks pretty, but doesn't seem very useful to me...)?

Pretty much just eye candy. I went through 2 Fuze's in the last month and finally traded it in on an iPhone 3G. I expect the Fuze will eventually be great once the cookers have their way with it and learn the ins and outs of the device, but for now the iPhone offers a lot more value for your dollar. The built in AT&T software is *horrible*, and I say that coming off almost 3 years with an HTC Wizard.

LoL... you're killing me...

The copy/paste, lack of MMS, and inability to save internet passwords are teh reasons I want out of my iPhone. But, the iPhone does have a much speedier and simplistic layout, has visual voicemail, will work with my Mac out of the box, and has the much nicer music/video software for listening... (I wish I could just go out and make a decision without researching things!)

Yeah, the iPhone isn't perfect by any means. I hate the lack of copy and paste. Have you tried any of the apps from the app store to save your internet passwords? I haven't yet (only had my iPhone for a week) but I'm tempted.

I think the breakdown goes something like this:

Hardware capabilities: Fuze wins, hands down

Software usability and stability: iPhone wins, hands down

Perfect device: Nowhere to be found.

TF3D is very useful, especially for one-handed operation. Takes most of the everyday useful functions of the phone and makes them easy and finger-friendly.

You can do some reg tweaks to basically eliminate the slowdowns in TF3D. Remember Windows Mobile is a multitasking OS and is not gimped to improve "user experience" like iPhone's OSX implementation, so you gain functionality at the cost of "i-feel".

There are several media player options, Coreplayer (or TCPMP), Kinoma and Divx player, to name a few.

I had an iphone and almost burned the thing. I sold it, and bought a fuze.

I do have a cooked rom and different radio, but I'm finding TF3D works very well for quick info, or a nice interface for launching things (like bookmarks on the web tab). No slowdowns, even with lots of apps running.

I haven't been happier since! To each their own though!

You can compare the two devices all day... You will come to the conclusion that the Fuze and iPhone are for very different people. The fact is that you can use the Fuze like an iPhone but gain so much in the process. Get some simplistic applications and tweaks and your Fuze is limitless. I have both and the iPhone is nice, but lacks in so many aspects. I am sure you already know what it omits compared to windows mobile but the two operating systems are completely different. Get an iPhone and after a week, when you loose the i-Appeal, you'll notice that the Fuze is a much better device. The best part is how open the operating system is without having to "jailbreak". In the end it's personal choice.

Well, I already have an iPhone, and the areas it's lacking in is the reason I'm even considering windows mobile. The reasons I'm hesitant, though, are the fact that my main computer is a Mac (I have access to a windows machine, but the Mac is where I work, so all my Address books, music, calender info, etc is on it), the fact that there's a headphone jack, AND the iPod functionality (With my car and while on the train).

The Fuze does seem great, which is why I'm more or less leaning towards it. I drove 20 minutes today just to try it out and see how I liked it. The slow TF3D was a bummer, as was the HTC media player... I couldn't play with Opera, because it was disabled or something????

Yes, TF3D is very useful. IMO its the best interface out there so far.

Stock, the only Touch Pro that comes even close to being useful out of the box is the Sprint version. I have it, and I still use a custom rom.

As someone said above though- to each their own.

EDIT
"Stock, the only Touch Pro that comes even close to being useful"

Not good wording. The phone is very useful out of the box. I just can't stand all the bloatware and some of the sluggishness.

What are you guys using for headphones on your Fuze?

this should probably be moved to the accessory forum, but atm, I'm not using anything for my fuze. waiting to get a bluetooth when I visit Asia in X'mas so that I can plug in my sony noise-cancelling headphone. I checked out a few options we have here in the US, but choices were limited and none seems good enough for me. Ebay is one way to go, but shipping from Europe or Asia = lots of $$.

Sorry!!! I chose this area since I figured it was a fuze-specific question. :o

I was originally about to buy some S9's or equivalents, but I guess I wont be able to use the radio functionality.... So now I'm not 100% sure they'll be the best choice. (They'd be great, though, so I can change songs on the fly... something I guess I can't do with the phone itself)

An Aside question: While playing with the fuze today, and using its media player, I put it into standby and music playback stopped. Will this happen with headphones paired/attached?

Do you need to use the massive dongle that comes with the Fuze to get the radio and headphones to work? Or is there a slimmer version out there?

there are bluetooth headphones out there with built-in FM transmitter just so you know :)

as for the standby question, what you can do is lock the key (I'm using Romeos2, so long press End key locks the screen/keys). After about a min or so the screen will turn off automatically to conserve power

Yeah, i would agree that they're just 2 devices for 2 different types of people.

TouchFlo3D is pretty bad with the stock rom (for at&t anyways) and for that reason i would recommend you flash a lighter rom from one of the chefs here ASAP if you do decide to go with the fuze. Once you do that, it's amazing how much better of a device the fuze becomes.

I shouldn't really comment on the iphone since i don't like it very much and would therefore give you a biased view, as would most people on this forum i believe. My sister and Dad both have iPhones and love them, while i would be really unhappy with one.

In short:
iPhone = Cute device that's limited in functionality yet ready for you to use the day you buy it.

Fuze = Awesome device with a lot more functionality, yet will require some tweaking to feel like you truly got your money's worth.

TF3D on arrupenthal's great RRE ROM runs nice and fast, I can slide across the bottom seamlessly with practically zero lag, plus it looks really nice. There are other cooked ROMs that handle TF3D quite well also.

Basically, when you get a stock ATT Fuze, its performance will definitely disappoint you. Ditch the stock ATT ROM immediately.. it's horribly slow and pretty much worthless. You can find plenty of ROMs here at xda, you are almost spoiled for choice.

FWIW, I'm using Da_G's ROM w/o TF3D because gyrator2 doesn't work too well with landscape on TF3D. I have Gyrator2, touchflo, HTC home, and the wheel scroll all working pretty good together, along with the old grey screen, which looks good on the black fuze. I don't need TF3d:D

I experienced some weirdness with Gyrator2 and TF3D, so much so that I disabled Gyrator2 for now by renaming its executable. I think it was more a settings issue, the Gyrator2 thresholds for switching orientations were too sensitive(it would jump from landscape to portrait to inverse landscape way too quickly). I'll play around with the settings and see if it becomes usable again.

*Avoiding the iPhone v Fuze argument*

TF3D is the best interface I've used on a phone but the interface on the iPhone is it's greatest strength IMO. TF3D is just a cover over the same WM OS and sometimes it shows. But the stock ATT phone is a poor execution of what it can do. Like most people have said once you tweak the phone just a bit it works 100 times faster.

Putting on a ROM without the ATT bloat helps. So does adjusting the pressure sensitivity of the phone; you have a really press on the stock settings, but you can adjust it so a light touch will work more similar to the iPhone's capacitive resistance screen.

After that TF3D is an excellent competitor to make Windows Mobile a bit more easy to use.

I've got a little USB to 3.5mm adapter with some Shure SE530s. Sounds good, but not as good as a dedicated MP3 player...

I just got this phone 3 days ago. My only complaints are that:

1) Yes there is a flash for the camera, but it only works if you are close enough to it.

2) Battery life could be a bit better

3) Everything sounds quieter and sometimes have trouble hearing people in general. I switched from a BB curve (which the speaker was much louder). Does flashing the rom fix this?

I have no experience w/ WinMo, but found it not that hard to get used to. My fuze seems to be quite responsive, compared to videos i have found.

Honestly if I can't get the volume working better I will have to return it, which I really do not want to, but what is the point of having a phone when you can't hear people.

I may buy Vista for my Mac, when I buy my fuze (so I can install programs). Does 64-bit vista work with any programs, hacks, etc Needed to install a cooked rom onto a windows mobile phone? Or should I buy a 32 bit???

I just picked up my new Fuze yesterday, coming from an iPhone. I have several questions regarding it:

1: For some reason Opera and Internet Explorer refuse to work when using the Network Data. They will only work on wifi. How do I fix this????

2: Text messages weren't coming in at all yesterday. This morning I found the DATA switch under Communications. After switching it on, I started getting text messages again. Does this mean the DATA switch blocks SMS???

3: Is MusicID a free program? Or will I be charged every time I try to identify a song (It was free on the iPhone....)

4: What kind of programs are a must have??? (I got skyfire, and it's a little weird... it doesn't render pages very well...)

5: Any Accessories (Cases, etc) I should get?

Thanks guys!

I guess someone should have stopped this sooner.. 27 posts, 12 new threads!

That's a serial threader. Seriously, respect the forum and look around instead of simply asking for others to bring you the answers.

This NEW Big Thread consists of 8 of your original threads that all overlap to some degree and honestly I don't see anything that isn't covered elsewhere.

I'm also closing this thread with the sugestion that you should read the links in my signature and think twice before starting a new thread.
