I don't know where you got it from but I've upgraded / downgraded the radio on my G3 many times to various versions without problems. I don't know about G4's (or if yours is a G4) so if you have a G4, poke around the forums and make sure that you are confident that the radio's can be changed on those before you do.

If you are flashing radio only - no, it will not delete anything
