View Full Version : Getting the GPS on the Titan work in standalone mode

Have anyone got the GPS on the Titan to work when you don't have network service?
I have even tried this:
http://www.rimweb.in/forums/index.php?showtopic=13024
I can get my Titan to pick like around 10 sats but it's very unlikely that I will get a lock (1 of 20 times I get a lock).
Cliff notes: What do you have to do to get the GPS on the Titan to work in Europe?
Thanks

Without data, as long as you don't enable aGPS it will work in offline mode, however it's very intermittent on sync. The best method is to turn it on, give it a clear view of the sky either outside or in your car and just wait. If you are driving it will almost never sync up.
Get a tool like Bafs GPS Toggle. As it won't "time out" like Google Maps and Live Search will do. If you just wait it should eventually sync up.
As for outside the country, I am not sure if any of the primer tools like QuickGPS will help, not sure if they will download the ephemeris data for those areas. The first satellite your phone can link onto will then transmit ephemeris data to your phone and tell it what other satellites should be visable at the moment and the upcoming schedule for the upcoming time periods. It then attempts to connect to the others. If it can never make that initial connection then you may never get a sync.
Just give it some time. Mine never took more than 15 minutes while standing still, tho while driving I drove for over 30 minutes once with no sync, however I came to a long stop light 2-3 minutes, and bam it synced. So the trick is to just sit still.
I've never been to Europe, so I can't guarantee that my advice will help.

Thanks but I already tried all that, it doesn't seem to work when you're outside the US, I have left the phone for hours under clear sky, sometimes it will even reboot and I will need to start priming the GPS again.
There must be some special setting that I need to do in the phone.

i don't know for sure if the following will work outside the US.
open up a registry editor, i use PHM Registry editor
go to this key
HKLM/SOFTWARE/HTC/supl agps
change the following, if they need it, to:
EnableAGPS 1
EnableGPSSmartMode 1
GPSMode 4
click ok, quit the reg editor, do a soft reset and go back to make sure the settings took.
this will allow you to use the stand alone gps without the need of being in cell tower range. google maps will not work, since it uses the data connection to load the maps.

Isnt GPS Mode 4 only for Sprint users?

Hi everyone, first I want to apologize for my bad english, I will try to explain my problem. I'm from Venezuela, my cell phone carrier is Movilnet, my Titan setup is ROM DCD 3.3.4, Radio 3.2.50, PRI 2.03. The problem is: when I'm on cell phone service area my GPS never gets a lock, unless I let the phone all night with the GPS software trying to lock.
But, when I travel out of the city to an area whitout cell phone coverage, I can get a lock within 2 minutes, consistently, even after a soft or hard reset.
I'm using VisualGPSce to monitoring and priming the GPS, but I also had tried GPS Test, GPS Viewer, GPS toogle, etc. I had noticed that, when I'm trying to lock with VisualGPSce, the software give me a initial position that is 180º wrong, i.e. If the right coordinated is N8º 20,91 W62º 39,14, the software shows N8º 20,91 E62º 39,14. I had tried in flight mode with no success, also disabling aGPS in the registry, may be I will try a QPST config, but I don't know what config can I change.
My thery is that the cell phone towers create some kind of "conflict" and messed up all the GPS syncronization, may be the time syncronization, I don't know.
Thanks for your help.

Seems the GPS on the Mogul won't work in Europe or anywhere outside NA.

Well, that's exactly the point, getting a gps lock when you don't have a carrier (no network service at all).

Believe me, I've tried all modes.
I supposed mode 2 would work because that's the factory mode on the GSM models that works on networks with no aGPS, yeah, I have even copied the settings from a GSM TyTN II and a Touch Cruise, they won't do the trick on the Titan.

What GPS settings do you have in your registry?
After the hard reset, the default registry settings was:
EnableAGPS 1
EnableGPSSmartMode 1
GPSMode 2
That works in the no cell phone service area, but in the city, doesn't work.

you can use standalone gps with some of the radio versions:
3.35.04: gps mode 2: no lock, no reboot
3.39.10: gps mode 2: one lock, 1x reboot effect
3.41.00: gps mode 2: 3x constant locks, good navigation, no proven reboots
3.41.00: gps mode 1/disabled smart, disabled agps 0x constant locks, 2x proven reboots
3.42.02: gps mode 2: 1x reboot effect
3.42.30: gps mode 2: no lock, no reboot
3.42.40: running: 3x lock, 0x reboot (disabled smart, disabled agps, gps mode 1)
3.42.50: gps mode 2:1x reboot effect
i used own cooked rom with ppckitchen 20931, a gps software to initialize it (Sirftech, free) reprogrammed the phone with qpst (all gps checkboxes on like recommended somewhere in the forum) and much patience... a lock need sometimes up to 2 hours from window (had to connect the phone on the glass in 2nd floor), outdoor it locks while remaining in the car and myself going shopping for some time.
Sometimes with working configuration it never locks, sometimes it does, no matter how much sattelites in view (mostly 5 to 10)
The reboot occurs in my opinion in the moment the phone gets a lock - some user assumed it only happends if you stay outside usa.
I am in germany (no network available) and have disabled phone, wlan, bluetooth.
Try 3.42.40, use gps mode 1, disable agps, and use sirftech - if that doesnt help, post again...

I now have 100% gps reception after letting the device ~20 minutes in the car. So i will post my configuration and hope it helps:
ROM Version: 3.08.666.1 (ppckitchen selfmade, nothing special included)
Radio Version: 3.42.40
Hardware Version 3
PRL 60613
PRI 2.03_003 (these doesnt really matter in airplane mode)
I use the "10 items" communication manager with all disabled except of flight mode.
Registry: Default from rom plus the following changes:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\SUPL AGPS:EnableAGPS = 0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\SUPL AGPS:EnableGPSSmartMode = 0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\SUPL AGPS:GPSMode = 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\SUPL AGPS:QoSAccuracy = 25
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\SUPL AGPS:QosPerformance = 89
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\SUPL AGPS:TimeBetweenFixes = 1000
All values are decimal, not hex!
i think that changing QoSAccuracy from 50 to 25 and TimeBetweenFixes from 1 to 1000 had absolutely no effect. So you should try to change only the first 3 values...
in QPST service programming i have disabled "Allowed" because i read it will not disable the gps but the agps - thats true. I have checked and unchecked all boxes, checked only Autonomous and GPS/AFLT Hybrid.
... in all times i got a lock i started the device from power off mode (pressing power button long time)!

Well, I am getting a lock at this moment. Using 3.42.40 on the Titan and 3.41.00 on the Vogue.
Problem is... Garmin Mobile XT somtimes kills the lock. Yeah, even with the GPS primer running, when Garmin is not running I can get a lock but if I run Garmin the lock is lost and it will not re-lock until I close Garmin, happens often but not always.
What navigation app do you use?
Have you found out what the EnableGPSSmartMode setting does exactly?
Thanks

setting EnableGPSSmartMode to zero disables some power saving functions of the gps chip and should lead to faster fixes after stand by. but it need additional software to keep a fix alive while device is in stand by (port must be opened by a service, there are some apps in the forum)
EnableAGPS to zero just disables the usage of mobile tower information, so everything what's left is the sattelite gps.
I use garmin and sometimes i have a gps lost warning - usually 10 seconds later gps is working fine again - with no interaction from me.

For some reason it screws up the phone but it seems it's doing it only on the Titan with the 3.42.40 radio. Garmin on the Vogue with the 3.41.00 will relock after 10 seconds as you said.
Would you tell what other radio version would you recommend me to try next on the Titan? 3.39.10?

i use AstroGPSLauncher with garmin - maybe thats why it runs smoother with my titan. Give it a try... (search in forum)
The programs to run gps in background are in development, i saw some code which implemented a service and should work fine - but there is no easy to install cab at the moment. If i find some time i will compile something.
At the moment i am testing 3.37.75 with verizon stock rom - but thats no great combination because verizon rom interfers with the gps to stop foreign applications to work with. Maybe you can test some roms from the 3.37 series (there are 5 versions), these are the only ones which i have never used...

After a couple days using the radios I already mentioned on the Vogue and Titan, I can tell you the 3.41.00 radio on the Vogue works better when the GPS reception is not too good and the 3.42.40 radio on the Titan works better when there's very good GPS reception. It's very weird. Also the newer version on the Titan can get a lock while moving on the car but the older radio on the Vogue can't do it...

I had my phone with me in Guatemala (no VZW towers down there), and for the heck of it, I tried to get the GPS to lock. It took at least 10 minutes or more to do that without the aGPS functions. But, I was able to get the lock on our position sometimes, but not always. I was surprised it actually worked and was able to encode some of the pictures I took.
Sure would be nice to have it work better than that.

Does anyone have the GPS drivers of the Kaiser or any other MSM7200 based phone? It seems the GPS on them works better in standalone mode but I don't think the hardware could be much different, maybe it's just the drivers.

Just a note for people who want to have the newest version - there is a 3.42.50 radio version out there which is from titan and that version works fine. The other available 3.43.50 is from another device (Vogue) and works not in standalone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444630
Standalone GPS mode 1 or 2 with AGPS disabled works fine, but my lock times in a moving car or train are horrible - 15 minutes waiting for a lock or reboot is bad. I use quickgps, but i assume there is something wrong - with 5 to 8 sattelites there should be faster lock...
cyclon1978

oh, and if anyone had verizon MR1 installed and wonders why he gets no lock after reverting everything to an old version, download an original sprint rom and look for the second ruu file - it is smaller than the big one which contains the full rom. And it clears your radio and other settings... (please write down all settings and make backups)
After using that you can install a new radio and rom (not MR1 ;-) ) and standalone gps works fine (if you make the qpst settings and registry modifications)
With MR1 you can not use standalone gps at the moment.

Same thing here... I even tried it in the mountains with nothing around and I got very quick fixes when I was standing still but while moving I almost never got a lock even when it was seeing 8 sats.
I also tried it in an airplane and I once got a lock but it lost it after a couple minutes and never locked again. My Holux M1200 worked great in the airplane and the mountains.

drewcam888, are you sure, you are not using a-gps but the standalone mode?
i think the 3.42.40 radio is faster as the 3.42.50, but yours is really fast... can you test it with airplane mode, maybe after removing accu for 5 minutes?
Maybe your quickgps is doing the trick... in which region (us, europe) are you?
i will switch now back to 3.42.40.

Yes I don't have a data plan so I am using AGPS. I could give the gps a try in airplane mode. I am in US in Indiana.
What do you mean by moving accu for five minutes?
cyclon1978
24th January 2009, 11:25 PM
if you're using agps you can get really fast locks. but i have no network service in germany so i must use standalone gps - so our lock times aren't really comparable. With airplane mode you have same enviroment like i have and the time you need to lock in airplane mode should be bad - like mine. if you have a good lock time with airplane mode i would think your settings are better than mine.
i meant removing the battery for 5 minutes before testing airplane mode - this is necessary because the gps chip could remind your location and lock in fast.

Won't get a lock with those settings... I will pick a lot of sats but will never get a lock.
Seems the GPS on the Mogul won't work in Europe or anywhere outside NA.
I/m in New Zealand.. the GPS works perfectly using Google Maps as well have Garmin XT installed.
Upgraded the radio to a GPS enabled rom.. no registry changes done.. can get a lock reasonably quickly.. 2 minutes-ish.

oh, and if anyone had verizon MR1 installed and wonders why he gets no lock after reverting everything to an old version, download an original sprint rom and look for the second ruu file - it is smaller than the big one which contains the full rom. And it clears your radio and other settings... (please write down all settings and make backups)
After using that you can install a new radio and rom (not MR1 ;-) ) and standalone gps works fine (if you make the qpst settings and registry modifications)
With MR1 you can not use standalone gps at the moment.
Cylon - would you be able to provide some assistance on this? I had mistakenly installed the MR1 and standalone totally wasn't working for me. I've installed some other radios and ROMs, and I'm kind of stuck. Thanks.

You have CDMA service there, don't you?
I have seen the GPS on the Titan work a lot better on areas with CDMA coverage, even with no aGPS.
Put your phone in airplane mode, remove the battery for a couple mins and then try again to get a lock (still in airplane mode).

And that only happens in germany, not in usa. Have anyone had the same issue outside us? i will play a little bit with epst settings because i like the good reception of this radio (worlds better than 3.42.50) but it need to work stable.

The yesterday configuration was: radio 3.42.40, GPSMode 1, QPST setttings all checked, old WM build which I can't remember. It was hard for me to get a lock but at least it did not reboot and sometimes I could get a lock as I said before in this same thread.

Guys, any chance we can port the QGPS service from the Kaiser? It seems to do the trick with QuickGPS:
In fact, most QGPS implementations, including the SiRF-III and the Kaiser's Qualcomm have 4 layers of software to make the whole thing work.
The first being the GPS channel driver itself obviously. The second is an GPS intermediate driver, which is somewhat a managed com port driver.
The third - the most important one - being a QGPS service (in Kaiser) / a helper background process (in SiRF-III) running in the background to actually use the downloaded quick gps ephemeris/almanac data to calculate satellite positions, and then upload it to the GPS chip. It is indeed contrary to popular believe that you upload the whole QGPS file to the GPS chip and let it do all the computation. This is actually quite impossible given the processing power of such a small chip and very limited memory. The data crunching must be done with a processing unit running off the chip, i.e. on the host device. In a SiRF-III implementation, the real-time ephemeris/almanac data obtained by the GPS are actually being written back to the QGPS data file, presumably in an attempt to preserve the most updated data in a data store.

The QuickGPS program is not a service, it's just a program to download the ephemeris data.
If you use HTC GPS Tool on a Kaiser, you'll see the difference, the program starts showing every sat from the ephemeris data and that never happens on our devices which doesn't have that QGPS service.

Okay, the basics.. I am using the DCD Titan 3.2.6 ROM with his Cricket Carrier Cab installed (says radio version 3.42.02 on Device Information). This is on my old Sprint Mogul. I no longer have Sprint, so I figured I'd retiure this device to its new life as a GPS unit for the vehicle. Cricket offers month to month service, so I figured I'd use their carrier cabs in case I ever need to activate it for a month or so.
Under the "Programs" tab, the "GPS program port:" is set to "COM4".
Under the "Hardware" tab, the "GPS hardware port:" is set to "None", and the "Baud rate:" is set to "4800".
Under the "Access" tab, the "Manage GPS automatically (recommended)" option is checked.
Everything seems to be set correctly.
I am trying to use Tom-Tom. I have it all set up, and it seems to be working. The only problem is, it can't detect my GPS device.
Also, I installed the Quick GPS cab. I can't get that Quick GPS to update for some reason. I am connected thru Active Sync, I can browse the web on the device, but when I try to update Quick GPS I get "Connection failed. Please try again later."
I also installed Google Maps, and it is not able to connect to GPS satelites either.
I have installed Advanced Config and disabled AGPS.
Anything else anyone can think of to get this GPS working?
Anyone that has this working- I saw a few posts saying some people get GPS locks in 1 minute... Please post your ROM, Radio, Registry tweaks, etc. as I would like to duplicate it.

First of all, when you say it doesn't connect to GPS sats, you mean it doesn't see any sats or that it doesn't get a lock? I recommend you to install HTC GPS Tool.
You need the patched version of QuickGPS or you need to move the xtra.bin file in \Temp to \Windows manually.

You need the patched version of QuickGPS or you need to move the xtra.bin file in \Temp to \Windows manually.
So I did a hard reset and started over. I installed a Soft Reset cab, Total Commander, PHM Registry Editor, Sprite Backup, Tom Tom, HTC GPS Tool, HTC Quick GPS, patched exe for Quick GPS, and I used My Mobiler (which installs a cab).
The patched Quick GPs is actually just an exe and a reg file. The exe opens Quick GPS for me, but the reg file just opens up PHM RegEdit without changing anything. Do you know what registry entries need to be changed? I did move the xtra.bin from \Temp to \Windows manually, but it appears to have put another one in \Temp. However, Quick GPS now downloads without a hitch.
So, I did the Quick GPS update (used the patched exe to launch it, after moving xtra.bin to \Windows) and it updated. I then did the HTC GPS Tool. It took a few minutes, like 5 minutes, and it got a fix. So I opened Tom Tom and it found a fix. I soft reset, went straight to Tom Tom, and it found a fix in less than a minute.
So, I made a quick backup in case I have to hard reset again, and I'm good for the moment. Thanks for the help. I think that patched Quick GPS and GPS Tool did the trick.

It was picking up the Sprint signal, but I don't have a Sprint account anymore so the phone is no longer activated. I also forgot to mention, I was indoors when I got that lock.
I'll try to take that phone with me this weekend and get locks in a few different places (and while driving, and in flight mode) and I'll post the results.

Also the indoor signals are only good sometimes. I think mainly because the number of satellites over your head changes. So when you have satellites outside with vision of the window you can do it. But many times satellites can't see the window just the roof above you.

In South America. Most cdma networks have been already shut down in every country down here. Don't make me think too much about it because it makes me very sad.
When there was cdma coverage, my Titan worked well, even with no AGPS. I thought if it worked well without AGPS it would also work with no cdma network but it does not, so I'm sure even if it's in airplane mode, it's still seeing some network and locking with one of the towers, maybe it just needs the cellid which would be none with no cdma coverage.
The gsm HTC phones (MSM7200 based) works great but they use completely different drivers so I think it's more a software than a hardware problem, I wish I could have access to some Qualcomm information so I could port the drivers.

It does connect to the GPS sats like your old BT gps but it is very unlikely that it will lock if there is no cdma coverage, I think it was developed to complete the fix with some info from the celltower (maybe just the cellid), even if you are not using data.

If you turn it off with the port opened, it won't work anymore, that's because it's using the buggy gps drivers. There is another driver that will keep working even if the phone is suspended while the gps port is open.

The stock drivers make the wifi switch act like a hardware switch. The nue driver for that makes it a software switch so you can turn on and off the wlan without taking the switch into consideration. If you plan to use your own kitchen, PM me and I will explain you how to include the nue wifi driver.

Tested and doing the same with hard switch off. With hard switch on I can turn on or off in com-manager. Hope you don't have a switch problem but sounds like you might.

If you turn it off with the port opened, it won't work anymore, that's because it's using the buggy gps drivers. There is another driver that will keep working even if the phone is suspended while the gps port is open.
I had this problem with TitanReloaded 1.4 beta 2 this weekend when I was out looking for an autoparts store that carried my ceramic brake pads. While navigating, I put the phone in standby and had to reboot to get it to lock again after taking it out of standby. However, after that I was able to put it in standby and have it recover. I hadn't traveled very far from the standby point the later times, though. I don't know which was the fluke. It working or it not.
However, where do I get this other driver that doesn't have this bug?

I think it depends on how long you leave it in stand by... Leave it for an hour and report back, I'm pretty sure it will do the trick ;)

You cannot change the driver of a ROM, you need to replace it while making the kitchen. IIRC the GPS driver included in PPCKitchen ( Drivers_Titan.rar ) doesn't have the bug but it has been a long time since I have been doing the GPS-stand by testing on the Titan, I am working on the same issue on the Vogue and I can tell you for sure the driver from the OMJ ROM works perfect, if you feel like taking it from there, I am sure you will be able to do it.

i have tested TitanReloaded 1.4 beta 2 and it has the same reboot issue, i got one lock and many reboots.
the GPS driver included in PPCKitchen has the same issue, so maybe its a bug in the radio rom...
bitserve, which gps driver is included in beta 2 ? You said something about "including installing one from a GPRS phone" - we want to include the one from a qualcom 7200 phone like the kaiser because this phone works better with standalone gps. if we could use this driver we have a solution if the cause for the reboots is inside the gps driver...

I just don't understand why the phone is rebooting. So after you open your gps program the phone will reboot?

After a while trying to get a lock, the phone will reboot.
You need to make a trip to Europe and see how your GPS works without cdma coverage, heh ;)

The stand-by issue is a driver issue for sure, you can take the drivers from the OMJ ROM and get rid of that problem.
Anyways, trying to make the Kaiser gps drivers to work on the Titan will be a better bet, you can get the drivers of it from Kaiser_Core.rar ( http://ppckitchen.org/Downloads/Kaiser_Core.rar ). I think you will need to go step by step, replacing one of the driver files, build the rom, try if it works and do the same each time with a different driver file because it's very likely that one of the files will be only designed to work with that chipset or the rilphone driver which is different for GSM phones (I have done some testing already).

I will be in the Dominican Republic soon so I will try it there. Although there might be some service on the island. But I will be running airplane mode the entire time.

I think there is CDMA coverage in Dominican Republic, there is a company owned by Verizon (or that it was owned by them before).
I still think the airplane mode doesn't make the trick, the GPS still connects to the CDMA towers even in airplane mode. Just leave the phone on, if after a couple minutes it is still searching for service, then there is no cdma coverage there.
Are you going to Punta Cana? :)

some people believe that there is a problem if you are outside us - or at some specific gps coordinates which the driver cant handle and which are in europe.
maybe something against terrorists which could use titan devices to...

I think it's just related to the cdma coverage, if the phone can connect to a cdma tower, then the gps will work, if it can't connect, then it's just up to your luck...

Well it shouldn't be a problem including it in the ROM. However, I haven't found anything that would require the GPS drivers to be cooked into the ROM. One should be able to replace the drivers or add new drivers after it's cooked. That's how I do most of my testing for drivers. If I actually had to flash a new ROM each time, it would take forever. Only the drivers loaded by the boot image would need to be cooked into the ROM.
I'll look for that OMJ ROM and at the Kaiser ROM. I'm pretty sure that I can disable all CDMA service on my phone to test this. Unfortunately my weekend is already booked working on my sister's web site for her. Next weekend, I should have some time to figure out what's needed to get GPS working without assistance from the carrier.
I actually meant that I had used a driver from a GSM phone, not a GPRS phone. Sorry. It's the one from the new Iolite.

I recorded with a V3i (yeah, very LQ) what happens most of the times when it tries to get a lock, this was with my vogue but the exact same thing happens in the titan:

I have found something kinda important.
There is a place where I usually can get a lock very quickly (30-40 secs) but sometimes for some reason it wouldn't lock... I found out what I have to do to fix this. To get a lock, I need to REMOVE THE BATTERY of the phone before turning it on and try to get a lock there. I tried many many times (almost 20 with different radio versions) and power it off and on or resetting it doesn't do the trick, I have to remove the battery. If I get a lock there and lost it for some reason, it will not relock until I remove the battery.
You can make your own conclusions.

The gps worked in the DR. But it took very long for a lock. I blame this on the fact that I didnt update quickgps there because of no internet. But I did get a lock in the airplane where I had no service. So who knows on this titan gps problem.

You can update QuickGPS, it won't make a difference because the rilphone on our phones don't upload the quickgps data to the radio :(
Taking very long is not good... and I guess you had a decent view to the sky, now you feel our pain.
I have a HTC Fuze (TP) now and the GPS works decently, I can get a lock where I am supposed to in a couple mins.

hi folks,
i got a good working gps now. using the already discussed standalone settings but with a 6.5 ROM Windows 6.5 XV6800/Titan 23007 from ppcgeeks.
Fast locks on balcony, < 3 minutes, no reboots. With 6.1 rom i got sometimes a slow lock, most times a reboot
