True, but right now for my needs it's fine :P I'll probably get one when it's cheap and when I need it. Mostly use Linux these days.

I would agree with you. But I don't think it ate mine. Sure his processor is faster, but I acquire more RAM than he, so I personally think mines faster. His P4 might be 3.4Ghz, but mines quad-core at 3.0 Ghz, and theres 2 of them, and my RAM is DDR3 at 1000Mhz, while he's stuck at 533. [: And look at my graphics cardS, while he has a graphics card.

Don't get me wrong, his computer is a beast, but he has a little bit more before he gets me.

Wait. Did I forget to mention, take my computer and multiply it by 4 to get the one working computer? ;) It's 4 computers hooked up to one monitor and each of them are combined with each other to work faster to achieve more. I call it. My custom home server! :)

No. I'm serious :) I would have a Blackbird :( but I'm a poor 16 year old and if I save money I can't buy the new WinMo devices that come out xD lol. I'll probably be running a couple blackbirds in college @_@

Now that is amazing! and it probably cost you less than one of those stupid photoframe things..
I thought photoframe was going to be a piss-take

In a way it started as a piss take. I fancied a digital photoframe about 9 months ago but didn't want to pay through the nose for a low resolution 5 inch one. Work were throwing the laptop away with a valid W2K licence key, so the whole thing cost me about £40 (SD adapter, SD card, WiFi card and picture frame). A minute and half from power on to slideshow is annoying, but 1024x768's a nice recompense for that!

The things we do when we're bored! :)

My machine:
HP Pavilion dv2422 with Vista and Ubuntu Hardy Heron
2GB RAM
1.6ghz dual core processor
Too many gigabytes

My home station (working on it):
Donated machine with newly installed Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex
19in LG monitor
552mhz processor
512mb RAM (to be upgraded to 768)
This is going to be my always-on machine

My obsolete machine (replaced by the home station):
Old school computer with Ubuntu Hardy Heron
Old school monitor
2*128mb RAM
300mhz processor

On my wishlist:
I'd love to get an Aspire One someday, just for the sake of it :P

ddr 2 667 @ 32 gigabytes (can go to 64 gigabytes)
sadly stuck with a single GTX 280 because the board does not support SLI or Crossfire, oh well.
Currently rocking 6x 10k rpm raptors in raid 0 for 720GBs of fast storage Have external terabyte network drive for backups

NO AUDIO! no extra pci slots of the like to support a card.
I use it for 3d rendering and lan party server use. I mostly just cluster it with my desktop and laptop when I don't have any work to do. linux is amazing when it comes to multithreaded applications.

I sold my 79 Pontiac Firebird w/ a 403 to buy this... I miss it.

I'm experimenting on creating a ram disk on the server and using it as swap for my machines or games. dual 1000 lan so I can get away with dedicating a separate network for it.

oh and my apartment has free utilities! Thank god! I use up anywhere from 200-800 watts at a time for this beast.

Depending on the systemboard, not using 2/4/6/8 or 3/6/9GB could cause it to drop out of dual or triple channel memory mode, which will actually hurt performance.

Its better if the set is the same make, have a look for _GB kits. That is your best bet. They need to be same frequency and type afaik.

Sure thing. I cannot speak for the UK, but I just built a new machine (specs below) about 2 months ago, and 6GB of triple channel DDR3 was only $89.99.

Here is what I just recently built:

Intel Core i7 950 (3.06GHz Bloomfield) [Stock cooling, never goes over 24c]
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard (USB3 and SATA3)
6GB G-Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 memory in triple channel 4-4-4-12 configuration
XFX HD-587X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express
Western Digital Caviar Black 600GB SATA3 (6.0Gb/s) x2 in RAID 0
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Carried over the ~700W PS I have from the last build, along with the SATA optical drive.

AMD has failed to impress me since the Athlon XP 1800+ way back in forever ago. Ever since then I've been on Intel.

That doesn't mean the whole AMD production has failed due to one single Athlon XP 1800+, though its the oldest cpu. If it would have been such, it had vanished away long time ago.

Till today AMD has never failed in competition with Intel. You can get the same powerful cpu as intel in the half of its cost.

It depends. Intel has also failed in some cpu's.

@MacaronyMax

Its not between AMD or Intel but its between the cpu they have made and there reviews. Before you buy anything, make sure you have read its reviews many times. No matter how long it takes but the most important is, you should satisfied. :)

Never belief on the ads and sellers, They will think about themselves but never about you.

Why do you all have i7's :( :p

I always get the Top of the Line Desktop, but I only upgrade every 3 years. So I bought the Core2Quad in October 2007, got the i7 about 3 months ago. This way, I can also say (albeit for a very short amount of time), I'm running (almost) top of the line hardware. :D

But if I bought an average desktop, I'll end up wanting to (or needing to) upgrade every 18 months?

Thanks for the replys :p

An i7 would cost around £230 and be 4 cores where AMD's X6 (Six core) Cost be £140 :p Although like you said it won't be anywhere near the intel in proformance, but hey I have an AM3 sockert board already, so why change ;)

Wa-ho, bitter much? Why does it matter what components other people buy? If they have the money, why not?

In terms of expense? The price barrier between iPhone and comparable Android devices is marginal.

So I must be a 33year old deprived child who doesn't have friends in real life and play computer games on my I7 all day, oh with onboard graphics cards (check the specs of all my computers).

Just because I bought one of the latest doesn't mean I have weaknesses in real life. Are you saying "fast computer owner = weak / dumb person"? And I buy all my shit on credit card and struggle to pay off monthly to avoid interest charges. Do you still think I'm fifty rich?

Hopefully you don't own a supercomputer of some sort, because by your own logic, you know what that makes you, right? :)

The 5770 is not a bad GPU. You will get decent performance out of it, but I would check reviews on the card you linked to make sure it doesn't have a high failure rate.
