How to make mp3 as your message tone? Simple... Juz put ur mp3 file in Device - My Documents
Go to Settings - Sound and Notifications - Notifications - New Text Message
There u have it, ringtones for ur message...

You just need to put the mp3 in the root of your Internal Storage and you can choose it in the list.
