I have read around that Garmin Mobile XT has a problem with battery drain.
What can you tell us about that?

all GPS Sat/Nav programs will drain the battery very quickly... i use both Garmin and iGO and, when i'm not using my power cord, my experience is that they zap the battery at the same rate.

I have not used the gps long enough to see the battery drain but i wouldn't doubt it.

As for igo and garmin I like garmin alot better but thats just my opinion.

guys would you say that there is considerable lag when using Garmin XT?

what I am experiencing is for example while driving, and then taking
a right turn, garmin doesn't update it until 2 seconds later, thus throwing me
off track and then on track again.

If you have tracking or (foot prtins) active and recording you can see this
clearly with sharp 90 degree snaps as well as strange snaps that do not follow any logic.

Changing the 3d-view to 2d-view (North always up) helps to minimize this.

So i am guessing is this telling me that the 528Mhz cpu is not enough!!!

I just took my HD and Garmin MXT on a trip to Quebec for New Years. I can report that there is a graphical "lag" but the naviagation prompts are right on the money. I did not use the track feature so I cannot comment on the way it lays down its "bread crumbs" but I did notice a huge difference in time when it recalculated compared to my Touch (likely the 201 Mhz vs. 528 Mhz processors). I have never used any other software but Garmin so I can't compare but I like it alot. Oh, I also remember their was no delay with my Touch using the same SD card and a blue tooth GPS receiver.

Yes, there's is sometimes a lag. I also recognized this. If you also track your way the battery went down fast. I can track with a full battery about 6-7 hours.

ive using the HD and Garmin XT.
i like it a lot..
i compared it to the Nuvi 200 and the Nuvi 265wt.. they are all at about the same moment but none were exactly the same. but i do notice that the HD is laggy when it comes to the graphic section compared to the Nuvis.

anyone find a way to improve it?

the Garmin XT doens't say street names does it?
or does it?

Yes, you can set Garmin that street names will be shown on the screen. But there's no option that you hear the street names while navigating.
Don't knoe if other programs have this option. But it must be impossible because you can't have voice files of all streets in europe... ;)

HugoTouchHD
2nd January 2009, 10:27 AM
I think it is a processor limitation, the nüvi's have a TTS (Text-To-Speech) system so that the device does not need all the street names but can speak anything, it likely has a dedicated processor for this, the HD has to do it all with one processor and since it seems to already have problems with just navigation I think we'll have to wait for the next generation phones to have enough processing power.

Personally I don't really like the spoken street names, I want English prompts so most of them are mispronounced anyway, it's more of an entertainment option to laugh at when it tries to pronounce things like Onze-Lieve-Heersbeestjeslaan :D

Do you have version 5.00.20w? I have a lag only when zoomed in alot. I noticed when zoomed out it is hardly noticeable. Also, I can only get the upcomming street names to appear at the top of the screen when "not navigating" by doing a round about. That is to say it does not display the upcomming street names by itself the way version 4.00... did.

Hello all. I tried the garmin xt but did not like it. its the same as the zumo thats on my kawasaki z1000 and after riding around spain and back through france I realised how bad it is compard to tomtom navigator. after using tomtom for a couple of years now on my p3300 (orbit) I got a hold of tomtom navigator 7 which works a treat. As well al know its personal preference.

i have the newest one.. with newest maps..

i know the Garmin Nuvi 265wt says streeet names.. i guess they didn't build it into the mobile one because of memory or the speed ..

mine always lags.. the car is never next to the intersection .. or in a turn.. maybe ill try to zoom it out a bit. its on automatic..

Guys

Based on what I can work out the Gamin is the only unit were I can get a map of chile.

It seems that I am looking for "Garmin Mapsource Chile Streets 2008"

Now I have cheked the web site and can not seem to beable to buy any maps for the PDA version. The site comes up with no maps found even for europa.

So what is the trick here ?
Do you buy the maps via some software (like Tomtom) or do you download the file install and activate ?

Would it be even possible to get the Chile map working on a HD or are there some other limataions that I am not aware about.

Bottom line is that I lack understanding and the web site is not helping me much.

I have downloaded the application, support files and free map.

Would somebody please explain how to obtain a legal copy of the chile map (as you all know that is the only thing we can post on this site).

Thanks

Ps thanks for the thread, jsut kept me up a few more hours, oh what fun (NOT)

it may prove useful, theres an updated 3d driver for the HD in the first post, it maybe the problem you are having with your gps becoming laggy on screen and not with the audio as one of you previously stated.

With all due respect
1) There is no link to "read this thread" so if you mean this one then I have read it.
2) There is no link to anything in the first post.

So I have still as much understanding as I had when I posted my 2 commnets this morning

I don't think there are legal downloads possible for this, Garmin's software always seems to come on a MicroSD card, so it would probably be best to contact one of the Garmin dealers in Chile (http://www8.garmin.com/cgi-bin/dealers.pl?country=Chile)

I just want to inform that the newest ROM 1.19.831.05 and Radio 1.10.25.25
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462235
works now really better with Garmin XT 5.020.
The problem is now solved that the device switched off automatically.
(My solution was with the old Rom (1.14) that I changed the energy settings that the device doesn't switched. That worked fine and you had no problems with the tracking.)
The Lag problem I didn't check until now.

Huh :) Garmin XT is NOT using any sort of hardware 3D acceleration. Same as iGo. So NO 3D driver would help here. However it run's pretty decent on my HD (stock ROM 1.14). Maybe some lag but nothing too annoying. Somebody asked for custom voices. AFAIK there are only a few available so far and they are all home made. They are all American English, so you will loose the original American English voice! Here they go:

1. The Devil
http://rapidshare.com/files/178911620/Devil.rar
2. Our beloved Schwarzenegger :)

3. Borat :))))
http://rs172.rapidshare.com/files/178825123/Edit_VPM.rar

Just rename any of those to English_British_.vpm or whatever other language and then choose the corresponding language in Garmin XT. Remember to backup yuour original language files if needed.

For the china map to work correctly, you will need the "Taiwan", or the "China" version of XT. In these versions you can switch between correcting the offset, or not.

the turn off Garmin XT problem could be solved only with this:
1. turning off in power settings "turn off device if not used for"
2. using an alternative program which stay the device always on (Mobilemagic,...) and turning the screen off
3. option I gave with the new radio, doesn't work.
I had MobileMagic in the background... ;)

I would like to buy it but I know from Garmin you are forced to use the original 2GB card and it is impossible to copy it on a bigger card. On the original card there should be only 200-300 MB free. Is it really true ?? I do not like to change cards like a DJ !!! Does anybody have suggestion ? If it is only a matter of card capacity would it be possible to make partitions on a card and copy XT on a 2GB Partition and leave a second partition free for other SW ??
Thanks for your suggestion.

It's possible and I've copied XT to an 8GB card and use it almost every day (and I agree that it is a really stupid type of copy protection) but I don't think XDA will let me tell you how to do it here.

Great to know these files are spreading all over the net heheh. The Governator voice is my creation :D Let me correct something... you have to rename those .vpm files to English_American_.vpm... I got confused because pigtones dot com had an installer for .vup files (own format) and they were all English_British_.vpm.

On the contrary, there is a version of Navigon Mobile Navigator (I think it is v6.5) which was developed for PNA using WinCE 5, which has the text to speech feature and an XML file that has the language variables.

I have actually used it on a car stereo with GPS navigation feature and it is fantastic, it does not only say "take the first exit on the roundabout" but it also adds "on to bla bla bla street"

garmin xt is my faverat nav program the maps are vary accurate, it pics up ur location fast and its easy to use not to mention it looks great with custimizable vehicle images, voices and points of intrest its just great.

now to the swriouse bit 2gb is a bit low on memory as it is let allone with the fact that most of it is takwn up by the navigation.
i agre its a bit silly to limmit you to 2gb they copy protect it then dont evan give you the option to purchase it on a larger card. i have copyed myn to the 8gb card so im happy now for those who are still stuck on the 2gb card and and want more space or those that want to buy garmin xt are put off by the limited size it is totaly posible to copy garmin to a larger card as HugoTouchHDsaid i doubt it will be allowed to be discribed in detail on here as it dose breake copywrite.
howevere to start with you can download the necessary software from garmin them selves (link below)legaly and with a pc install it on a card of your choich this dose not include any maps evan if you where to copy your map to the card it would not work unless you could gat the apropriat and unique activation code and serial from garmin. pm me and i can share the information on how to request your garminactivation codes.

Hi,

I discovered Garmin XT 2 weeks ago and I likes it because of very good maps. But I have a problem. I'm planing a long trip and I load using MapSource 3 mapsets for 3 countries. I try to establish a destination in a different country than the current possition andt I receive an error "Unable to compute route to destination" (somthing like that, maybe is not exact phrase). I'm not able to establish a destination in the same country but to a long distance from current position. I guess is somthing about memory (RAM) but I'm not sure. I use Dutty 3.7 ROM with Manila 2.1 but the problem is present also for Dutty 3.x with Manila 2.0.

Someone has an idea what's happening?

Many thanks

Hi all, I just got the HTC HD. Unlike my previous Samsung Ominia, I found the display of HD cannot catch up with the speed of my car when I am driving. (ie.it is lag a little bit). I have installed a SD turn up program that I I got from Wiki page. The lag is improved a little bit. Does anyone know how to solve the lag problem completly now?

Also, does anyone know how to enlarge the icon of building on it's map?
They are too small under WVGA resolution. I google it for a long time but cannot find the way yet. Can anyone help me?

Thank you very much

P.s. I am using 5.3 Taiwan version.

I'm running the stock ROM that came with my phone and have had no trouble at all. The lag did suck when I went from the Fuze to the Touch Pro, and since the HD is basically a big screen Touch Pro, I didn't figure the lag would disappear when I got this. I remember reading on here that Fuze owners saw a slight "leading" when coming to a stop, meaning the car icon would actually protrude into an intersection before snapping back to where it actually is...I don't remember this specifically, but I noticed a tremendous lag (~2 sec.) when I got the Touch Pro and the same lag on the HD. I've played with every possible driver and registry tweak out there, but GMXT doesn't perform as well on the HD or Touch Pro as it did on my Fuze. As said on here, <2GB is really a hassle. I have an 8GB Class-6 card and I'm sure it will still be in there when I'm dead and gone with plenty of room left.

All of that being said, I agree with shaz. I love Garmin and will only use Mobile XT. It has such a nice looking and well thought out interface/maps that I can live with the lag, which for me wasn't that hard to get used to.

As Garmin asus will release a 480*800 Garmin Phone soon, I really hope that the new Garmin software will be release together so that I may soft the lag problem and small building icon on a 480*800 resolution devise.
