View Full Version : What does EVDO data connection look like?

I just got the data plan, finally, and I am one of the many noobs that didn't read any instructions and went ahead and flashed without writing down all that useful EPST info. I have gotten "a" data connection, but it seems to be terrible, and I know it supposed to be much better.

My question is, is there any difference in a "dial-up" connection and a higher speed connection in terms of icons. It shows that I am in an EVDO coverage area, but under connections it shows a dial up connection.

I never used the data on the mogul before, so I'm not sure if I need to call Sprint Customer Service, or just deal with their crappy data in my area.

Thanks for the help

You should have an "Ev" icon at the top somewhere as far as I know.

Telling us what ROM and radio you flashed might help us help you.

Make sure it still says EV at the top when you are online, if the EV changes to a 1X then something is wrong with your configuration.

sorry, i'm running reloaded 4, which i believe is dcd 3.2.6 with the touchFlo 2D. I have the EV symbol, i just wanted to know if it should say I have a dial up connection as well whenever I'm using data or if that is the wrong one.

thanks for your help

Did you install the carrier cab? If not, it would make your data connection not work.

EVDO dials up just like 1X, it is just able to connect at a faster speed.

yeah i installed the newest one, august 08 i believe, and got EPST to work so I could make changes, and i get a data connection, its just terrible.

well i took it to a sprint guy i know, and he had a tech look at it. the verdict he had was that my "downloaded software" was causing it to slow down. i just laughed and said thanks. his idea of downloaded software was my ROM, and i cannot believe that dcd has created a ROM that slows down internet connections.

any ideas?

i did the same thing.. flashed without writing down the EvDo password (known as the HDR AN AUTH LONG password in EPST.

The method to extract your EvDo password is to use CDMA Workshop to do a memory dump and then use a Hex Editor to read the data and obtain a 16 digit hex number which is your EvDo password..

Havent been able to figure this out.. Some programs already have a built in EvDo password reader..

Good luck if you can suss this one out!

1X is approx 150 kB/s download speed
EvDo is around 1500 kB/s download speed

(New Zealand) I'm not sure if it's the same in your area/country

Cheers

I saw that the HDR AN AUTH LONG was all gibberish in the settings, and I was curious if that was supposed to be something. Does anyone know if that's something that Sprint should be able to give me, or am I going to have to just wait and have an "accident" with this phone?

No idea, I get about 100-300kbps over EVDO though.

you could try running your carrier cab again (after deleting the existing modem connection for data). Verify that it is not weak signal by going somewhere with a known good evdo signal

Just curious... I have the Ev for data... but when I place a call, it changes to 1X.. Is this normal?

Yes. Just FYI the Data will not work while you are in a call unless you have WiFi turned on.

well, because its useful to others who might be in the same boat, I will continue replying, but I figure out another way to get data, and that was to get sprint to change my mogul into a touch pro...

I have run the carrier cab a couple of times now, and its verified that i have the crappy data, but i can't figure out how to get the HDR AN PASSWORD (Long) other than to do a dump, and i don't think i'm gonna go thru that trouble since i send the thing back tomorrow.

I have the same thing happen to me always, I will have full bars in EV, but when I make a call, it switches to 1X. This is the same for data.

The Ev means that youre in an area that has EvDo mobile broadband capability. When you make a phone call, that will always change to 1X because phone calls run via the 1XRTT network.

When you connect to the net, your phone will try firstly to connect to the EvDo mobile broadband network but because you dont have the correct EvDo password (HDR AN AUTH LONG password) it will instead drop down to the 1XRTT network.

I ended up getting a second hand Titan and made sure i wrote down the EvDo password before upgrading and flashing. So now when i hit the net, it doesnt go to 1X. The Ev icon stays the same which verifies that im on the EvDo broadband network instead of the 1XRTT network.

While connected to the EvDo mobile broadband network, you can still receive calls, texts. On the 1xRTT mobile broadband network, you wont be able to receive calls or texts.

Hope this clarifies things.
